14:21 you know what i'd call this? the cockroach rule. what's worse than finding a cockroach in your room? finding a cockroach and having it disappear. because you dont know where it went. what's worse than finding a cockroach in your food? finding half a cockroach in your food. because you don't know where the other half is. never reveal the whole baddie
Great analysis man. Why Tire: 180 degree rule. The previous shot where the bad guy popped the tire had him facing the camera, the streetlights were on the opposite side (behind the camera) they showed the tire (tire facing the camera means the bad guy is now to the left and the lights to the right) so basically they rotated the camera in 3 shots. FROM: 1) Bad guy front, tire right, streetlights behind camera to 2) Guy to the left, tire front, lights right and lastly to 3) guy behind the camera, tire to the left and lights in front of camera. If the tire shot was not introduced it would have just flipped the characters on the screen without transition.
Arnas Biesevičius I guess we’ll never know...i love ur stuff man but if ur gonna say something’s wrong cld u pls give a reason so we can learn from r mistakes??
The breakdown isn't quite how the shots were arranged. It went: bad guy front, tire right, street light behind -> streetlight front, tire left, bad guy behind (180°) -> tire front -> tire front (but zoomed out) -> bad guy front -> miles front, bad guy behind (180°) Maybe I don't know enough about the 180° rule, but it doesn't seem like they're following it?
@@coded8527 I'm now an animation director all thanks to this video, thanks for asking! (all jokes aside, that is my current title, though at a small indie studio. I'm very grateful for my position, and I'm still learning more every day)
When you mentioned the high school thing at the beginning of the video it kind of hit me hard. I'm a junior at the moment and i'm close to failing like half of my classes, and it's just really hard to find motivation in doing better when nothing's explained to me and i'd rather be focusing on my passion of art and animation. I really found this video helpful, thanks for making it!
I feel it on the rather be focusing on art stuff.. There's really no point for me to stick to my studies other than to graduate and get the diploma.. Like honestly, students should have the choice to choose their own classes and stuff they want to actually study for by high school... I feel like there would be a lot more passion put into that by students than modern day school standards for graduating.
Hey, yall got this! Don't give up! Me too in my first year of high school it was horrible. Just the worse year of my life i think (for now). But now i just finished my last year of high school, might be my best year, got congratulations 3 times, gained ALOT of self confidence, and actually going to University to do a Bachelor of Life and Earth Sciences! Instead of going to art school which are EW, I'll be studying on my own with courses and vids like this one. I worked hard during last year because i loved what we would study, so make sure you follow something you love except art, and inform yourself alot. You all can do this, there's always the sun after the rain
Ohhh, I thought I was the only. I'm glad I found people like me. I also just wanna focus on improving my art since it is what I really love and I really suck at academics.
Explaining/finding a reason to each shot is what makes it more captivating for me, like if I have to ask “I wonder why everything seemed so bright even though it was night.” And then it makes me realize as I continue watching the scene, “ahh, it’s like a spotlight is on him; like the feeling of being hunted.” Blah blah blah, there’s a reason behind every decision, even if it’s small. Not all the time, buttt yeah. This makes me curious on your abrupt outpost.
Wow, this is real nice! I really enjoyed this, it was very interesting! I don't animate or do film work of any kind, but this breakdown like probably helps with composition in like comic illustration and illustration in general (with the being clear and such). Also useful for media analysis, which I'm gonna do a lot of in my classes, soon I think. So, I'll save this and watch it sometime again later! Really great work, man!
Actually the tire cut was there to show why the truck ran into the middle of the street. The truck tries to break, but as the shot shows, without the wheels the breaks are useless. Then boom runs the red light into traffic. The extra information add to the snappiness of the scene, but the important part was to show the skidding of the tires. Because, otherwise why would the truck run the red light?
I believe the shot of the tire was to communicate to the audience that the truck isn’t slowing down and to provide anticipation for the crash without slowing the pace of the scene down without the need of making it too quick either. It provides a rhythm that makes the scene easy to follow while maintaining its underlying motive to make us as the audience feel on edge. 1st shot: prowler slashes the tire 2nd shot: light turns from yellow to red (audience anticipates that the truck is supposed to come to a stop) 3rd shot: cuts back to the tire in which the vehicle struggles to slow down (anticipate a crash) 4th: Truck silhouette highlighted by another oncoming vehicle (this information reaffirms the anticipation of an oncoming collision) Also, due to the fact that the audience is watching for the first time, some audiences may miss out on bits of information (especially since this scene is fast paced
This Breakdown is osom! Would be super osom to see more animation breakdowns... beginners have no eye to what look for. This was so eye opening. Can anyone recommend channels who do these kind of breakdowns? or Ethan can we expect more like this from u?
1. there's no coffee in that cup 2. I love how flushed his cheeks are by the end of the video. I dunno if it's humid or that's a rash, but it's so cute 💋😊 3. gonna have to rewatch bc I didn't hear a single word
I want to pursue animation and just now realizing your content isn't just about how to draw is amazing! I never knew how much thought was put into these shots in the film and now I'm mad love with it! Thanks for the lessons on this I learned a A LOT
Watching this and pretty much all of Alberto Mielgo’s other work makes me want to start learning animation. He’s a genius. He did The Witness (love death and robots) and the trailer for Watch Dogs Legion.
DUDE, I love your videos, as someone who wants to work in tv animation your videos help a lot to understand the behind scenes side of animation so well thank you man👍
22:24 off topic, the vehicle that came from the right side of the truck miles was one, is coming from the wrong direction of a one way street. Can see the sign when they show the traffic light and then the vehicle comes flying in from that street. Might not have made a huge difference in the crash itself, but something small I noticed ^^
don't say that that one scene had no consequences, you very much know what Dreamworks did to lance , you hurted him and there were no consequences for it
1:46 That because you're a kinesthetic learner. So don't worry they also fail you to teach you. (Physical (kinesthetic): You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch in order to comprehend the words around you. In other words you learn by doing. )
Hey, in regards to how the Jurassic Park scene ended up the way it is, I think there's two perspectives to consider. 1: Is just the material reality of on set production, it's expensive and you do your best to get good shots of everything, but it doesn't always work out, and you have to try and save it in the editing room the best you can, if you can't do a re-shoot once you find out you don't have enough to make it exactly how you want it. 2: If we consider the camera an actor with its own personality, having it be a bit frantic with little direction can make the audience feel tense and confused, which can take some people out of the kind of voyeuristic sense of tension to a more personal feeling of tension, kinda in the same way as action lines and closeups can help make a fight feel more frantic in comic panelling.
I'm pretty sure of what gonna be the answer, but i have to ask to be sure... does all the camera stuff (right vs left, etc) can be apply to a comic or is to much information for it... sorry to be such a baby :P
I know it's been 2 years, and someone has most likely already pointed this out, but whoever put together that awful "Best of" Jurassic Park scene inserted their own janky cuts. It wasn't that way in the original movie. Here's how the scene is suppose to look ruclips.net/video/gr2y69-P86o/видео.html
Question: You said that each scene had to be super clear, but in the end I was just as confused about what happened. So we see the light turn red right before the truck enters the intersection. In real life, the truck would have been fine, and the intersection would be clear. But the taxi is already in the intersection. I think they sped up this scene way too much. Also the bike goes flying past miles for no reason. It shows the bike running into the same taxi car but somehow it goes flying forward. Technically it should have been behind miles. Then somehow the bad guy ends up on the roof? I think this is why they slowed it down a bit at the end, but I do feel it was way too rushed after the crash, and should have been slowed down even more. Also I think they screwed up animating the bike and that's why they cut past it.
I actually didn't like this scene. The background colors are too similar and washed out, and the lighting is too blown out and bright. The action was good, but I think the animation was kinda choppy for 3D (I heard that Miles was animated differently to convey his un-learnt style). I'd give it a B-

interesting break down here. It's not correct, but It's interesting.
@@EthanBecker70 why is it not correct?

Do we think the directors took influence from ‘Smash Brothers’?
Knock the character out of the screen, get them out of the movie with a side smash.
I noticed that the beginning of that scene is the meme of the guy running away from the Tiger
Shot of the tire was to show that the tire is blown and truck started to brake, next scene shows red light to show why.
