    Does your shoe seem plenty wide? Test your insoles to really find out what your toes look like inside your shoes. You’ll be surprised!
    Shoe companies create lines of “wide” shoe sizes, but turns out they’re just making the shoe deeper. That means no extra WIDTH for the toes!

    gr8 vid and explanations. I am one of the people who has wide high arched feet. and eventually got plantar fasciitis. After going to New Balance store per dr Recommendations. discovered that
    11 2E in a NB 880 with off he shelf Orthotic inserts cut to fit did the trick. Also my knee pain also got better. The Other shoe that fits me well is the ASICS GT2000 in a Extra wide with a Copper Fit Balance Copper Infused Orthotic Insole cut to fit has helped me soo much. not only does it fit better you can tell from the wear on the shoe I no longer pronate as much on my left foot, which lead to knee injury

    Great tip to just take out the insert to see the actual dimensions of the toebox! I'm currently searching for new training shoes and certain brands are just way to narrow for my feet, especially the toes. I never thought about how that actually changes the mechanics of the foot!

    Right now I can only use Altra but even they have problems with some of their shoes being narrow in the manufacturing. I look for the widest possible toe box out there! (For my pinky toes to stretch out!). They have a new wide version of the lone peak 5 that I'm looking to hear about. Paradigm 5 is not too bad. an escalante 1.5 is super comfortable with the stretchy top for my pinky toe it's incredible stretch for the pinky toe.

    Thanks for addressing the wide toe box design to allow for the natural splay of the toes. I see that some of the comments mentioned Mortons toe and Mortons neuroma. I can relate. Incredibly painful. It is difficult to find WTB shoes/boots. I noticed that my orthopedic surgeon was wearing a shoe called Soft Science. Only come in whole sizes. Can't wear them for every occasion. Pretty funky looking but wide toe box and soft insert. It wasn't overnight, but the nerve pain from Mortons Neuroma is gone. I also found the Altra sneakers. Now I'm looking for hunting and hiking boots with ankle support. Any recommendation?

    • @KatieBodyFix
      @KatieBodyFix  2 года назад

      Hey Jack 👋🏻 checked out those SoftScience kicks... they are funky for sure! They look soft and flexible however the sole is a bit thick which isn’t exactly a natural feel for the bottom of our feet. They also lack a wide toe box. Just FYI :) as for boots, check out the Altra high top and also: Vivobarefoot, Lems, Xeroshoes. All have durable hikers. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    New Balance 1340 in 6E is very wide. Even the 4E is very wide and it has a high toebox. It accommodates long small toes nicely as it doesn't taper but the top is rounded instead. But it's a stability shoe.
    Jack Purcells back in the 1970s were wide and rounded too.

    • @KatieBodyFix
      @KatieBodyFix  3 года назад

      Hi Michael, thanks for the comment! Stability shoes are definitely part of the problem so I would advise 95% of people to stay away. It looks like the toe box is still tapered as "wide" or "E" width shoes are just more depth instead of actually changing the last of the shoe. Shoe company hack!
      It's too bad they couldn't just stick with running shoes of the 1970s! :)

    I learned about this about a month ago and it has me ready to throw away every pair of shoes I own except for my Birkenstock’s... the only problem is that Birkenstock’s are not good for skateboarding haha. For an activity that has everything to do with your feet, you’d think the footwear would be more anatomically correct but that is not the case at all

    • @oooomz7578
      @oooomz7578 3 года назад

      Related side-note: I used to think high top skate shoes would prevent ankle twisting & sprains, but I still twist my ankles even though I exclusively wear high tops. Now I have a theory that the most protective shoes are wide toe box shoes. Am I right in thinking that proper toe splay is better prevention than the ankle restriction that high tops give?

    • @KatieBodyFix
      @KatieBodyFix  3 года назад +2

      Nma Mbeledogu absolutely right! Our foot and ankle are more than capable of reacting to any terrain and protecting us from rolling our ankle. The more restrictive a shoe, the less it is able to respond to the environment and the MORE likely you are to sprain it! Also skate shoes are typically very stiff through the sole, another restriction that does not allow our foot to react and adjust to movement and terrain.
      I love that you went all in and tossed all your old shoes! That takes balls 🙌🏻 Birkenstock’s are super rigid too however! Great toe box and good for transitioning to minimal footwear. Welcome to the barefoot club 👍🏻

      I'm so glad you brought up skate shoes! ALL the typical skate brands have pointy tapered toes (vans, lakai, nike, dc, etnies, es, adidas etc etc...) and they HURT. But skaters have particular needs! (grippy soles, durable upper...) Plus we wear out shoes fast (so it hurts to spent $150 on vivobarefoot) I've been skating in Sanuk What a Trippers even though they are mesh and wear out heartbreakingly quickly. And now it looks like those have been discontinued. Keens fall into that "almost good, but still not good" range described in the video. Nma, PT Body Fix... ANY recommendations?

    It drives me nuts that most barefoot shoe companies don't have the guts to make their shoes wide enough for a full toe splay. They get so close, but just not close enough. If Birkenstocks, Crocs and Uggs can do wide looking shoes and make bank on them, why are all the barefoot companies so scared of it?
    The only ones I've found that I can wear are Freet's Connect 2s, which work because they have a very soft upper. They're the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. Other shoes of theirs that technically have a slightly wider toe box don't work because of less flexible materials.

      Most companies are out to make $$$ and give the people what they want. So little education in that department. But things are evolving. It costs money to change the last on a shoe and then all those big running companies, for example, have to back pedal and explain why people no longer need seven diff models with various cushion and “stability”. Keep your fingers crossed for bigger changes, and keep educating your friends and family on the importance of natural footwear! 👍🏻
