The 2nd theme of the post horn solo at 7:35" and 8'53", repeated by the strings (13:50"), is a tune from M.I. Glinka's Spanish overture no1, "Jota Aragonesa" (1845). Various composers like F. Liszt or L.M. Gottschalk used it in their works.
Utterly fantastic! The performance of this movement has to be on the list of all-time great music: bravo to the Philharmonia players and Meastro Salonen.
yes that posthorn solo, one of the most magical moments not just in Mahler but in all music, of any genre. and then that furious galloping finale! I saw Esa Pekka NAIL it at Carnegie Hall and leapt to my feet yelling YEAH! as they finished -- to glares of an audience full of dowagers etc lol.
Remarkable. One of the most profound and significant depictions in all music-ever composed-from 15:40 to the end. And communicated very well through The Orchestra and Salonen's work. Thank you.
This movement of Mahler's 3d is taken a bit too fast which lessens the bite in the first part and its return, and as well in the posthorn part. Sounds a tiny bit rushed. Horenstein's performance is better. It has the necessary swing. Posthorn solo is gorgeous though.
Étrange, tout de même, de voir si peu le cor de postillon, envers qui le caméraman doit avoir un aversion personnelle, préférant fixer le noir de la salle pendant son solo, plutôt que de nous le montrer !
Thanks for your comments - this was the choice of the director. Because the post horn is supposed to be off in the distance, the decision was made not to see the player, who is standing backstage. Thank you for spending time on our channel!
probably one of the most magical moments in music...
Ohhhh, that posthorn solo🥰💔 And love EP Salonen's tempos...let's the folk character shine through. Just fabulous

Jason Evans?
Philip Cobb, actually!
When exactly is it played?
The solo occurs in several beautiful moments but I wonder how the player's expression look like, the video doesn't show :(
@@AndreasArianto the solo is played off stage, mahler wanted a sound far away "aus der Ferne"
Is it a flugelhorn in this performance?
