I have to mention Love At First Bite starring George Hamilton as a vampire. The Renfield character steals the show for me, always eating bugs and nasty shit...hilarious.

I'd include some of Vincent Price's films, Abominable Dr Phibes, Theatre of Blood, etc, as well as stuff like Carry on Screaming, Creepshow, Dracula Dead and Loving It, Scream, Final Destination, etc

I remember listening to an Alice Cooper interview where he said that horror and comedy are almost the same thing, which is why some people are able to see films with lots of gore and violence and think it's funny, where as another person might hear a joke and be horrified by its content. Anyway... One movie I haven't seen mentioned in the comments, or on the show was "Zombie Strippers" with Jenna Jameson and Robert Englund.
Loved this show! Some great ones mentioned. Some other gems off the top of my head: Cooties Return of the Living Dead Tusk Slither Black Sheep Fido Psycho Goreman
Lost Boys. Yes! I have seen that one in the 100's of times. Wasn't sure it would qualify until Pete picked it up. The sax song is "I Still Believe". I have never cared for Sax songs but you can bet I jam I Still Believe whenever I put in the soundtrack for a listen. A great soundtrack.
Don't forget The Original Little Shop pf Horrors (1959).....other Horror Comedies: Ghost Busters with Bob Hope, Scared Stiff with Martin and Lewis, The Raven starring Vincent Price and jack Nicholson, Andy Warhol''s Dracula and Frankenstein, Carry on Screaming, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, The Fearless Vampire Killers and many others.
As always, a great video. But I am stunned that my favorite horror-comedy of all time didn’t even get mentioned, especially since it was a very influential film: Return of the Living Dead. That film was both scary and funny, and was the first film with fast zombies and the first where the zombies craved “Brains!” The characters were fantastic (esp Burt and Ernie), the punk rockers were hysterical, and I think it had the best punk rock soundtrack ever made.
My fav horror comedy is from here in New Zealand called Deathgasm. Plot is two metalheads get hold of a song when played with their band unleash a demonic curse upon the town. It is absolutely hilarious if your into metal (as we all are) there are tons of references you'll get. If death by dildo and King Diamond reference sounds good definitely see this it is a worldwide release so easy to track down.
I have Dead Alive on DVD its out of print.. I live in New Zealand where it was made and had to buy it from the US 10 years ago under the Dead Alive name cause you cant buy it here.. It went by the title of Braindead here when it came out..
Great pick with Happiness, Jamie. It's one of my favorite movies. I don't have it on DVD or Blu-Ray since, as you said, it is hard to get. But I had the chance to catch it at the movies in 1998 and to rewatch it some years ago at a semi-private screening nearby. It is disturbing and horrific as hell, but it's not a horror movie. It is hilariously funny at times, but I'd say it's not a comedy either. It's a drama which is often funny and horrific at the same time. And that's what's so challenging about this movie. You want to laugh at those terrible things happening but you don't know if you're allowed to. And your laughter gets frozen in your face the moment you realize that you’re not supposed to. Or are you? It's my favorite Todd Solondz film but he did other very good movies, his debut Welcome to the Dollhouse in particular. But there’s nothing like Happiness, I’d say that.
Happy new year to the fabulous guys in The Monsters Den; Pete, Chris, Rich, Dan, Jamie, Kirk, Mike P, and any I might have forgot! Awesome show, always looking forward to the next, regardless of topic. Great job guys, keep it up!
Jamie picking Happiness was quite a bold move on several levels. Certainly not a horror film, but pitch black in subject matter, for sure. Remember it being looked at as the slightly elder, and more grim sibling of American Beauty in some circles back then. A very provocative film in almost every way, but to say that the 'faint-of-heart' need not apply would be a grave understatement.
Great show! Great way to end the year. I never realized how many of them there actually are. Anna and the Apocalypse comes to mind, Zombeavers, Killer Sofa, and you could do a whole episode on Full Moon.
The grand daddy of all the horror / comedies has got to be Evil Dead II! If you’re brain will allow the comedy to be seen. I absolutely laughed my ass off when Bruce is battling his hand!!! The mouse hole middle finger scene!!! Crazy good!!! Thank you guys for the show!! Very fun!
Gremlins II was a parody o' the first f'n awesome film. it didn't take itself seriously, and that's why it was so good. it definitely fit this category...
The most serious dark / humored / and yet intellectually stimulating film of all time: The Ninth Configuration!!! Go find this film! Should have been BEST PICTURE!!!
Here's an offhand memory, but I had the honor of going to a swimming practice when I lived in Colorado Springs that took place in the same high school where Elvira had once attended. I know that is no big achievement, but it was fun.
Jamie’s mention of the Happiness movie got me searching You Tube for information about it. The trailer of the movie makes it out to be a family movie, but it’s got some dark subject matter. I remember seeing Pink Flamingo’s at a midnight showing and couldn’t shake the images from my head. I think this movie would have the same effect.
An explanation I've heard for why late 70's/early 80's movies seem 'grainier' or of less quality than films from other eras is because there was a global silver shortage at that time, which is used in production of the film stock itself. 🤷♂
This was a blast to listen to. Thanks. A s usual there are some excellent recommendations. I did a list like this on Letterboxd a couple of years ago. Here is the list. 1). Tucker and Dale Versus Evil 2) Dead Snow Part Two:. Red Versus Dead - I have never heard this one or the first one Dod Snow (Dead Snow) on this show (sorry if I have missed a reference). I recommend both of them. The first is a straight up horror movie about Nazi Zombies. The second one does a 180 into comedy. 3) Cockney's Versus Zombies - A British Nursing home has to face Zombies. 4). Shaun of the Dead 5) Gremlins 6) Cooties 7). Life After Beth 8) Little Shop if Horrors 9). Evil Dead 2 10). Tremors 11). American Werewolf In London 12). Beatlejuice 13). Bubba Ho-Tep 14). Killer Klowns from Outer Space -. HBO played this a lot back in the day. 15). Zombieland 16). Texas Chainsaw massacre 2 Peace.
All the best to all the fine folk we see in the Monster's Den. Pete, Chris and Jamie, Rich, Dan the new fellow who's name I can't recall (sorry) but made a great speech at the end of year get together and went to the 24hour movie marathon. There are more and I appreciate each episode for it's own merit, I may not know anything about Spider Man but I can enjoy you lads talking about it and why YOU enjoy. I hope you are all willing and able to bring the Monster's Den each week amongst all the other fine content on S.O.T. you're a STAR Pete.
Hi Guys. Great show. Chris reminded me of Frankenhooker. My friends thought The Evil Dead was the funniest thing they ever saw. Granted, they were on an illegal substance at the time.
A very entertaining show. Some differences of opinion that made it definitely worth watching. An interesting topic... what is comedy horror and what isn't.
"Return of the Living Dead" comes to mind right away! A horror Sci-Fi comedy that happens not to be very funny is 1957's "Invasion of the Saucer Men. 1972's "Beware the Blob" was definitely done with tongue firmly planted in cheek. P.S. Jamie - you are indeed SICK!
Juan of the Dead is a horror-Comedy I always mention that seems very few people have ever heard of. It's better than Shaun of the Dead and even has a great little nod scene to Dead Alive(Brain Dead).
DAMN!!! Yep, another one I TOTALLY forgot!! The makers of Juan of the Dead pulled off a herculean feat by making a FUN zombie comedy on like a ten dollar budget.
No love for The Fearless Vampire Killers.(1967) Not everyones cup of tea. but I thought it had some funny stuff. Just found a gem. Ready or Not (2019). a night of games. Death Becomes Her.(1992) cracked me up. Deep and dark humor in Brain Damage (1988). Take your Cronenberg pick, I say his, The Fly (1986) is a hoot. The end of the original version is horrifically funny, Help mee. (1968) Fright Night (1985)was a delight too.
there are blu-rays of both dead alive and bad taste out there but both are from spain region a/b/c import and under different names(braindead and mal gusto) but most likely not officially put out,but they are out there. nobody mentions Jekyll and Hyde ... Together Again i would consider that a horror comedy also has Cassandra Peterson(elvira) as a busty nurse.
Wow! I can't believe no one mentioned "Shaun of the dead". I watched this video because one of the screenshots was from that movie. I remember this movie, which I and my daughter loved, because we saw it at a theater when it was first released. On well...
It's funny how people perceive things differently, and have different senses of humour. I love Monty Python, and back in the 80's I did a musical duo with another guy, and I showed him the "Holy Grail" film one day. I'm almost on the floor laughing, and he's sitting there all serious saying, "This isn't funny?" Same thing with Rocky Horror Picture Show. I don't like musicals, but I think that movie is hilarious, especially if you see it in a theatre with an audience of fans, who do all the stuff and yell out all the joke lines. I saw it first in a theatre that was like that, in a nearby town with a big punk rock music scene. An ex-girlfriend of mine saw it, and all she did was complain that she didn't think it was funny, and she hated having all the shit thrown onto her. I said, did you sit near the front, and she said yes. I said why in the F would you sit near the front at that movie. You're nuts! "Well I didn't know?," was her reply, but she went with her sister, who had seen it, and should have known better.
First of all, how could anyone not like "Pooping Pooches". With that out of the way, Of course Sam Raimi`s Evil Dead movies and the great "Drag Me To Hell" are classics. "Fido", "Motel Hell" "Braindead" "Parents", more than I can mention. This genre is for when you want a horror movie, but nothing to heavy.
Happiness was a great pick. As much as it isn’t a horror film. It is a film filled with horror and dark humour. It is indeed a great film and not just some underground deviant filth fest…..killer show as usual….love the monsters den.
@@Jamie.Laszlo No worries man. It’s a great film. I’m surprised how few people have seen it. Great acting, interesting colliding stories but as you know. Dark dark subject matter mixed with dark humour. Anyway, cheers for the reply. You’re a great addition to the show on all fronts films and music. Really enjoy your humour and crazy props……Have a great new year brother.
Roger Ebert gave "Happiness" a perfect 4 stars and it wound up on numerous critics' best films of 1998 lists. Easily one of the most daring films ever made.
At the last possible moment, Jamie mentions my favorite, "Comedy Of Terrors". Great 60's horror-comedy. Price, Lorre, Karloff, Rathbone, and Joyce Jameson, who is just brilliant in her role. Early 70's John Landis, "Schlock". And much later, from 2014, "Housebound", from New Zealand. Agree with almost all of the guy's picks, although I think I'll pass on "Happiness".
Great show as usual, i throw one out there, I bought a vampire motorcycle from 1990 tho its pretty daft, has its moments tho, could of been a cult classic spoilt by the awful sterotype biker scenes. The trailer line goes Most motorcycles run on gasoline, tho this bad motorcycle runs on blood.
A great episode. I am convinced that Pete Pardo, Chris Alo, and Jamie Laszlo would talk about their favorite grilled cheese sandwiches - that it would be entertaining (especially Chris Alo). Can you imagine Chris talking about liking knock-off Velveeta cheese from Dollar General on his grilled cheese sandwiches? "It's so &%$# bad, but it's good!"
I now have a list of movies to go find!
Lazlo would pull out his sandwich diary and tell you how he ranked his first grilled cheese.
Ha Ha! The Monster's Den - The Grilled Cheese Episode!
Tucker and Dale vs Evil is a pretty damn funny one. And it’s got some pretty good special effects and makeup design in its kills. And then of course you can’t forget Shaun of the Dead
American Werewolf is the very definition of a horror comedy, Chris! There are entire scenes devoted to comedy. It's consistently comedic while being consistently scary. Even during the transformation scene, David yells, "I didn't mean to call you meatloaf, Jack!" Horror comedy!
Compared to the first film, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is a horror comedy.
Young Frankenstein (1974) with my favourite comic actor Gene Wilder.
The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

An American Werewolf In London was broadcast on Swedish national television last night. One of the best in the genre
This is my favorite monsters den episode.
What a fun episode of The Monster's Den. Lots of movies to track down and watch by the top one may need to be Rubber. Somehow, Chris makes that sound like a must watch. Classic: The Fearless Vampire Killers
80's: Gremlins & Beetlejuice
Actual: Zombieland I and II
You got a like from me for The Fearless Vampire Killers. I love that movie.
Same here, it's my '60s favorite as well. It works as a slapstick comedy and yet it has spooky images and great sets that are quite effective.
I have to mention Love At First Bite starring George Hamilton as a vampire. The Renfield character steals the show for me, always eating bugs and nasty shit...hilarious.

Lost Boys. Yes! I have seen that one in the 100's of times. Wasn't sure it would qualify until Pete picked it up. The sax song is "I Still Believe". I have never cared for Sax songs but you can bet I jam I Still Believe whenever I put in the soundtrack for a listen. A great soundtrack.

The Return Of The Living Dead reigns supreme!
I like its sequel too, it has some good moments.

Hi Guys. Great show. Chris reminded me of Frankenhooker. My friends thought The Evil Dead was the funniest thing they ever saw. Granted, they were on an illegal substance at the time.
I have watched Army of Darkness in the 100's of times. Funny throughout.
Shaun of the Dead, Tucker & Dale vs Evil & Evil Dead 2 are pretty funny.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil is hilarious
A very entertaining show. Some differences of opinion that made it definitely worth watching. An interesting topic... what is comedy horror and what isn't.
"Return of the Living Dead" comes to mind right away!
A horror Sci-Fi comedy that happens not to be very funny is 1957's "Invasion of the Saucer Men.
1972's "Beware the Blob" was definitely done with tongue firmly planted in cheek.
P.S. Jamie - you are indeed SICK!
Good show. Jaimie's Happiness pick is the most daring. It may make most people squirm but it's actually an excellent movie on all fronts.
The best part is when Pete and Chris look at him like " Are you fucking nuts? you think I'm gonna watch that shit?!"
@@DiVitoC Excactly. But I love Pete and Chris.
@@deanleslie3269 Oh I love those guys too!
"Dead Snow" from Norway. My favorite Nazi zombie horror comedy. Love it!!!
I saw HAPPINESS when it came out jamie, it's not a horror film but its certainly horrific.
Vicious Fun, PG: Psycho Goreman and Turbo Kid are required viewing.
Yeah, Psycho
goreman is great...forgot to mention that one.
Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein
Kinky Kong
Frankenhooker i think is from 1990.
I have Dead Alive on DVD. want to get it on bluray but i think its out of print. There might be rumors of a 4K release. The curse is real
The Dickies also had an album called "Dawn of the Dickies". Must have been horror fans.
jack frost,he one pissed off snow cone!wasnt a movie ash vs the evil dead was amazing.
Fantastic episode again!! I would throw out Return to Nuke'em High!
Is Young Frankenstein a horror comedy or comedy with horror? Or a comedic homage to horror?
Yes.
“Sharknado” films ….They are terror, gore, horrific & some ridiculous comedy 🎭
Bad Taste and Dead Alive are awesome and need a proper Hi-Def release!!!
there are blu-rays of both dead alive and bad taste out there but both are from spain region a/b/c import and under different names(braindead and mal gusto) but most likely not officially put out,but they are out there. nobody mentions Jekyll and Hyde ... Together Again i would consider that a horror comedy also has Cassandra Peterson(elvira) as a busty nurse.
A horror comedy,.. Transylvania 6- 5000, for having more comedy than gore. Good episode tonight guys. Happy New Year! 🥂🎉🎉
AWIL is the best.Best werewolf and funniest film ever!
I'm mystified why nobody mentioned the Citizen Kane of splatter comedies - Street Trash.
Wow! I can't believe no one mentioned "Shaun of the dead". I watched this video because one of the screenshots was from that movie. I remember this movie, which I and my daughter loved, because we saw it at a theater when it was first released. On well...
I'm pretty sure Alo mentioned it.
@@Jamie.Laszlo Thanks, I thought I did too!
'Arsenic and Old Lace'
Dead Alive was released on BluRay by Lionsgate (OOP) back in 2011. I have it but the transfer kinda sucks.
Cool topic
Attack of the killer Donuts!
Can't believe nobody mentioned the NOSTRIL PICKER - go check the trailer out on RUclips if you want to see how utterly ridiculous and funny it is!
Thanks for justifying my pick and explaining that it's not just some underground filth fest. That's a good way of putting it.
Did you mention Fright Night and Fearless Vampire Killers? Otherwise you need to do a part 2. Do it anyways. ;)
The entire Hatchet franchise is excellent. Ultra gory, super funny flicks. Adam Green hasn't made a film that I dislike yet!
I prefer my horror without comedy, HOWEVER...there are a few greats that i do enjoy.
“What place…is THIS?”
great show! would student bodies be considered comedy horror?
Yep, for sure! And I thought about that one too.
John Dies At The End... Witching and Bitching.... Theatre Of Blood.... Repo Man (the original).
Happiness is required viewing for all of the male employees at CNN.
@Chris Alo & @pete pardo- Is Young Frankenstein too much of a comedy to be considered Horror?
Happiness isn't horror/comedy, it's black comedy, more like Heathers. But stoked that it was mentioned on the show anyway.
I had to squeeze it in there. And since some parts are horrific (but not horror)....I did.
young frankenstein!!!!!.......dracula dead and lovin it........love at first bite.....krampus......teen wolf.....people under the stairs
The Little Shop of Horrors 1960 Roger Corman
Great show as usual, i throw one out there, I bought a vampire motorcycle from 1990 tho its pretty daft, has its moments tho, could of been a cult classic spoilt by the awful sterotype biker scenes. The trailer line goes Most motorcycles run on gasoline, tho this bad motorcycle runs on blood.
Hey Colin, I watched I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle not long ago. It was WAY too long and far too un-funny to be included on my "good" list.
