I find cloudscapes so difficult so I am really happy to have a video on it. Also encouraging to see that not all your paintings work out .
Agree!
Same here! I want to make a beautiful clouds but it is very difficult
Thank you, beautiful.
Lovely!
Beautiful ❤
I adore painting skies. Most end up in the trash, but it is still fun! Even your "failures" are gorgeous.
this reminds me, I need to work on my clouds! going to re-watch this and try your technique ☺
Another great video thank you!
I love that you showed your fail. Cuz mine is a fail too, ready to start another one, and maybe another and another.
At 4:00 all I could see was a sea turtle swimming in the sea 😂 Watching you paint is like watching clouds in the actual sky -and figuring out shapes. Great video! Clouds have always been a challenge for me. Will definitely try this!
Awesome!
Very nice! Thank you for sharing.
Thank youuu ❤ , then was nice and helpful 👍👍😌
Watercolor clouds - really good ones - are hard. I keep trying. Someday I'll paint some I'm satisfied with, probably after many more fails. Thank you for this video. 💯
If I could only fail as good as your fail :) I'm in love with the way your fail clouds came out, They look so interesting and inviting.
Glad to C U back!
this is my favored ever... Greetings from Italy
So cool, Steve! I have tried doing this over and over, with very little success, so I appreciate it that you showed us how. I’ve never tried so many layers! Well done!
I am starting to learn watercolor. I am at step 1 really and I decided to start by practising painting skies every day for a whole month. I wanted to say a huge thank you for listing the paint colors you use, in the description section of this video. I am heading to the art store today and having a clear outline of what colors to use for this video tutorial is so appreciated! Thank you! I can't wait to get started!
Elizabeth Keefner here…. Perfect timing. I have been struggling with clouds this past week. Now I have a new strategy and will try again Tomorrow.
Ty teacher❤
perfect timing as i was just wanting to do something like this!
I have never seen watercolor clouds that come close to these. They are beyond perfect.
What a beautiful 3D backlit cloudscape I’m in awe thank you
Thanks sharing your painting technik!
Beautiful sky
Very cool
What a beautiful 3D backlit cloudscape I’m in awe thank you
Ha! Cloudy with a chance of ridiculousness! Love this!!! Happy 😊 to see this post on clouds... a favorite! A California Gramma ♥️
Beautiful
Beautiful 🤗👍 thank you 🙏🏻💖
Gorgeous. Thank you.
Watching the clouds come out was amazing
Beautiful sky! I love Kilamanjaro paper. I saved this to my Sky folder.
Fabulous, learnt so much
The final is beautiful!
Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you! I so need to work on improving my cloudscapes. Down here in Florida we have some of the best cloud formations. Guess I need to organize my sky photos into a reference library for future artwork. Thank you again for all the time and effort you put into your videos.
You got that right! I live in Wesley Chapel on the water. The sunsets are absolutely amazing, and I'm always snapping pictures, saying I'm going to paint this. Had a most beautiful lavernder-ish sunrise this morning I thought would have looked beautiful with the palm tress out front. Have to do that from memory as it disappeared almost as fast as I saw it. Ohio has some incredible cloud formations as well.
Oh yes, I've seen many beautiful clouds in Tampa. It must be due to the proximity to the oceans because I've not seen anything like since I grew up in Atlantic City, NJ.
I have seen some of the most amazing cloudscapes in Florida. Endlessly fascinating and constantly changing.
Stunning. I love your art and I love your relaxed and affable style of presentation. You have encouraged me to explore the world of watercolour and art in general. Many thanks.
Quite impressed with your style of painting the clouds.
Although you demonstrate how to make clouds, the method is not at all "cloudy".
So much clarity has emerged today.
Appreciate your work and the sincerity with which you showed us the clouds which turned out to be sour.
Keep it up sir and thankyou so much for the excellent work.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Thanks, I learn a lot 😊
Great cloudscape, thanks for sharing the techniques you used. I went on a cloud bender a few months ago and soon realised for me it was a good idea to have a hair dryer plugged in and ready to go so I don’t try and keep going when I should be letting it dry. As you said the paper has a tendency to build up moisture and it can be really uneven which would get me into trouble quickly.
Thanks for showing the “fail” which I’m sure can be rescued with some work. These types of skies are not easy but the results can be very rewarding when you get them right.
Thank you so very much. I really learned quite a bit. Going to rewatch this multiple times, because painting clouds in a realistic manner is a struggle for me.
It's so mesmerizing to see how the painting is coming together 😍😍😍
I really enjoyed watching your CLOUD tutorial. I just learned a few things I didn't realize that was important to do. I will be doing it from now on thanks to you.
You explain the process so well and make it look easy. I know that your have years of experience and I am a newbie. Will give it a try or two or three…
Hi Steve, needless to say, I always enjoy your videos and have learned a great deal from them. One thing I really liked in this video is that you showed us a "fail" you had. Sometimes I get into thinking that I have to get it right on the first try. Your "fail" reminded me that it´s OK to have these "fails" and you just chalk it up to experience and try again. Thx much,
What a gorgeous blue you created. Beautiful. I could watch you paint again and again.
Steve, thank you for this tutorial. I can see how this technique not only makes for an excellent cloudscape but could be used for a seascape as well. Add some rocks to the foreground and you have a good beginning for some crashing waves. Can't wait to try it both ways!
That was so fun to watch. The end result is gorgeous.
Really good in-depth vid!! Thank you Steve. Love how it turned out
Loved this! I was watching billowy clouds today as we were driving along. I was really struck by the beauty and took photos as I wanted to try painting them with watercolor. Then tonight I happened to find your wonderful tutorial so that i understood about how to actually start the painting and understood the back lighting. Thank you so much! It's like a gift!
This was so helpful! One of my favorite cloud watercolor artists is Sergey Temerev. I'm in awe of what he does!
Great work Steve and so well disciplined. I'm not sure I could have resisted dropping in some cool reds!
This also reminds me of the difficulty I've been having painting the edges of flower petals that are often lit like this. Thank you!
Wow, thank you!
Beautiful sky and clouds - always a challenge! Thank you for your demo. When I’m outside looking at a cloudy sky, I always seem to find shapes - I can see a horse looking to the left. Beautiful and, by the way, I love horses! 😊
As a both trad and digi artist, I think of letting my watercolour pieces drying similar to saving my digital work.
A very timely video in my world. I will be practicing a lot this week. Love your videos so much! Many, many thanks 😊
Steve, you are a master and a great teacher. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Thank you for that lesson, and showing your fails. I was going to give up painting clouds, but I will learn through the fails. Clouds seem to be very mysterious.
You do fabulous work!! Only two days ago I tried to paint backlit clouds from a photo I had taken in my yard. Sadly, it didn't work out, and frustrated, I tossed it in the trash. Today, I found this video and am inspired to try again. Thank you!!
Wow that’s spectacular!! It is definitely fun watching how you manage to keep the water control in check to keep from having back runs. I would definitely have to work in sections after letting the paper dry the first time. I have got a couple of my own reference photos of dramatic clouds like this that I have been wanting to tackle. After watching this informational video, I’m thinking 🤔 I can give it a go! Thanks for teaching this challenging subject & breaking it down into manageable pieces. Have a great weekend!
This video comes at the perfect time for me. I've tried a few skies recently, with limited success when it comes to deepening the dark areas behind the highlighted edges and creating depth in the shadows. The main takeaway for me in this video is allowing the paper to thoroughly dry between the applications of the darker areas. Love the blending of edges you demonstrated. Thanks for a great demo.
Thanks for the “fail” 😉 ❤ I always appreciate them!
Don't toss your work pieces, date them for future reference to see your progress, and use the back! Paper is super expensive.
I love your loose style. Your painting looks so real from the very beginning. I do tend to draw out my cloud shapes before I start. It helps me visualize the direction to go. Thank you for this lesson!
Thank you Steve! Loved this demonstration and your cloudscape! I even found the painting you didn’t like very interesting. I found a whole story that could be written on it. Clouds are fun to look at. ❤
Clouds can be intimidating
You make it look so easy! Thanks for sharing 👌
I've always wanted to try to capture clouds in watercolor. You sure do them clouds proud!! Very nice work.
This is a great video, and my “take away” was to revisit, analyze, and perhaps improve earlier paintings. Your explanations on edge work and water control are very helpful. Thank you!
Great demo - thank you so much for sharing it with us
So lovely, Steve. I really appreciate the study on clouds, because I love to paint them, but I don't think I am very good, but I keep trying. And thanks, too, for the quote from my spiritual mentor, CS Lewis, who changed my life when I read Mere Christianity at age 21.
Wow beautiful
Just getting back into watercolour recently. I totally forgot about your channel, but you were 100% the reason I first tried watercolour 5 years ago! So excited that I found your channel again- it's bringing back so many memories. Already resubscribed. Looking forward to painting with you again!
Nice
Great lesson, thank you!!
This is perfect 🥰
That turned out amazing! An idea to make the clouds pop from the sky more may be to make the cloud shadows a slightly different colour than the sky. That said, I'm thinking you don't have any sky in this huh? It's just straight cloud. Regardless, nothing different _needs_ to be done, I just thought it may be interesting to play around with
Very interesting. Clouds can certainly have hard edges on them at times.
Amazing work, thank you.
Great tutorial Steve!
So beautiful!
love ur comment from cs lewis… so apt btw - ur fail share here i thought u could use it for ur landscape painting.. i really ❤ them and hope i can get them as u do
This was lovely Steve! Do the two blues you picked granulate less than others ? Thank you so much. On a different note, if you haven't watched Andor, it is so worth it.Good as a stand alone.
Wow, masterful creation of these clouds & I love that you shared your 'fail' too (although I'd have been happy to create it :}. thanks for this
Well Steve... This is great! Your videos are great. It's good that you explain as you go along. But could you do another one with a much smaller cluster of clouds? This one is a bit overwhelming to me. Thanks for sharing your talent ☺️have a great day!
The techniques would not be any different. I actually painted these in small clusters. Same thing.
@@mindofwatercolor Okie dokie.. hopefully I'll give it a try soon. But there are sooooo many things I'd like to try 🙃
Yessir 🥸
Beautiful clouds Steve! Thank you for sharing.😊
Wow I didn't know you could mist the paper to rewet it :) Thanks for the demo, can't wait to try this painting!
awesome! thinking of a clouds month :D will definetely try your tips! thank you so much, kind man!
Wow - makes me want to paint right now!
Amazing!!!❤
Thank you Steve! 'Study the chaos...' really is true, isn't it?
Patchy and splotchy sounds like the watercolour equivalent of the Itchy and Scratchy Show 🤣
Oh my!,
I love your channel! It has really helped and inspired me. I bought your M G pallette and it feels like Christmas waiting for them. Ty
That's how it's Sweetly done son, like eating cotton candy 🍭
That swoosh looks like the Neomorph from Alien Covenant.
Relaxing to watch...not yet relaxing to paint! Will keep practicing! Thank you for the video!
