Thank you for this video. I adore adventures like this. I am 4 years older than you and had to slow down while I recover from an anxiety condition. You have given me a chance to experience the world again while I heal. I really needed this adventure and your filmed it so well I felt like I was there.
Best wishes on your recovery. Thanks for watching!
When riding the KATY Trail, I stopped at a spot Lewis & Clark camped at the same day I was there, only 211 years later than them.
Isn’t it amazing to be in the midst of history like that?? 👍🏻
Thanks for another great video. Well it's almost officially. You have started putting a dream of mine into a reality. I spent an hour today in a bike shop learning about gravel bikes. I then went home and spent a good part of my day looking up bike backing equipment on the internet. Now to plan some South Florida trips for this winter. Thanks for the inspiration. By the way I'm 2 years away from retirement, maybe sooner.
That is awesome! Glad I could help. Stay in touch. I’d love to hear how it goes. Thanks for watching!
You're bags jostling kinda sounds like train wheels clackin' - very calming!
lol. that's pretty funny. awhile back, I took almost an entire roll of electrical tape and tried to cushion every single place where my bags rattled again the racks--it didn't really make much difference. It's funny how, when you're in such silence, those sounds can become super loud! :) I agree with you though. My grandparents lived right next to some train tracks and that sound would put me to sleep at night when I visited.
My husband and I finished the entire trail on August 18th. We’re in the last couple weeks of a three month road trip with our car and bikes. It has been the most astonishing summer. Thanks for the great video.
That sounds like quite the adventure!! Congratulations. 🎉
Just enjoyed your video this morning while on my stationary bike! Really liked your commentary and positive attitude. The Katy Trail is in my backyard and I’ve ridden it some but not the entire length. Fun video! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it! Such a great trail. I’m thinking of doing it again some time soon. Best wishes!
Katy Trail is an Absolute Gem of a Trail.. my only regret was not seeing Hermann MO.. looks like you missed
St Charles.. great town with Cobblestone road.. Fantastic Video 🎥🙂
Thanks, buddy. I think you’re feeling like I do: gotta get back there some time soon.
@@RideAlongAdventures Yes.. 🚴♂️😎⛺️.. That’s the plan 🚐
Great Video! Ty for the time you put in for this video
My pleasure! Thanks for watching. 🙏
We'd love to see your art, Bryan! 💝 I love learning about history and hearing your reflections on gratitude, our place in the universe, and all your trail thoughts.
I just finished watching your RAGBRAI video, and it was amazing to see how you persevered and stayed positive and committed. Your adventures are awesome! You inspire me to hike and bike more. See you on the trails. ❤
Thanks so much. I appreciate the encouragement. I have two "private" hobbies: art and singing. I'm not very good at either one but I'm a firm believer that one of the things that keep our minds healthy is to maintain a creative outlet. I know it may sound funny but I often sing out loud on the trail. I obviously don't record it. :) I have a few karaoke playlists on youtube and it's a fun way to pass the time. Thanks again for watching and, again, I appreciate the kind words.
I love your logo design for 8 Amish Ladies! 😂😂😂 🎸
lol. thanks.
I've watched so many cycling videos. None are more entertaining than yours. Thanks for sharing and keeping it real. The colorful commentary and the deep trail thoughts are priceless. The mind, keeping itself entertained!
Thanks, Greg. I appreciate the kind words. I find it really funny how and where the brain goes during these long stretches. Creativity, absurdity, sometimes really deep and other times so ridiculously shallow. I think it was the second day, at one point I was contemplating how to unite people around a sense of “common good” and moments later I was thinking about how I’d like to go back and watch more Gilligan’s Island. The brain is amazing. 😂
@@RideAlongAdventures Ahh, Gilligan, now there is a great mind of our time. A lesson in every episode..if you paid attention! 😆
I think the dog is just a canine version of panhandling on intersections :-) .... one out of 10 will have a treat for me :-)
It’s true! 😂 someone said they thought that dog died. It deserves a statue if so. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen it in other videos.
Can you plan another Erie or Katy this or next year and invite guests, I’m down for the ride and the history lesson. Keep doing you pal!!
That’s so funny you mentioned this. I just yesterday finished the Mickelson Trail (South Dakota) and today was thinking this very thing: how could we bring together people to gather for a group ride, have fun, etc. The inspiration for this was learning (while visiting the town of Deadwood) about the annual Sturgis motorcycle rally. Seems like crazy fun.
Stay posted. Maybe we could make this happen together.
I’ve ridden sections of the Katy, but not the whole thing. Congratulations on completing such an awesome accomplishment.
Awesome! Thank you! Great trail. Congrats on the segments!!
I've been watching and re-watching this video for a couple days now. That segment at the end where you ring the bell and give a big "Woohoo" is a really powerful moment for me. Bryan you do a wonderful job conveying the joy and the pioneer spirit on these videos and I can't say "thank you" enough. Your passion for biking is contagious, and I hope you know that you help a lot of people with these. Many thanks for another job well done!
Ron, I really appreciate this message. Thank you. Very timely.
I just finished a ride across Florida. Absolutely beautiful back country. Video coming soon.
I Agree 🚴♂️⛺️😎🍻
That business about ringing the bell is like dipping tires in the rivers on RAGBRAI.
@@Alex_Riddles it’s true!
Hi Bryan, I've watched many of your rides but still have several to watch. This one was a great ride since it was celebrating your retirement. I've been retired for almost 3 years now. Sold my business and realized shortly thereafter that life is going to be different. Not sure if was going to be a "good different" or "bad different" but it was going to be different. I'm happy to say it was a good different. First year I was lost. Not sure what I should be doing but now enjoying life, just like you are.
Keep on riding and exploring.
We could talk for hours about this. I just crossed the one year mark. It has definitely been far different than I imagined. Good and bad. I feel like I’m just now coming to grips with the possibilities of what may lay ahead. Best wishes to you as well. Thanks for watching! I appreciate it.
You have hit the KATY Trail food dessert. Hartsburg in the 90s had a B&B, a full service restaurant and even a bicycle shop (now moved to Jefferson City, and several bars. On my trip in the 90s, between Jefferson City and Hermann there was no food or water (it was in the mid 90s on our Jeff City to Hermann day) . The trail guide showed several places to get water, but they were all closed. So, we ran out of water about halfway between Jeff City and Herman. Also, no food after the Tebbetts, a store owned by a 90+ year old woman. Al least there is water on the trail at the trail heads now. So, things are better in some ways but worse in others. I was looking at the last KATY Trail Guidebook (out of print) from 2013 and many of the places are GONE, mostly restaurants and businesses that catered to the trail traffic. Sorry you experienced some of the same problems we had in the 90s on the trail. I thought it might be better now.
Wow. Interesting perspective from years past. I would guess it’s hard to keep a seasonal business going. Yeah…seems like some long gaps. And yeah, that guide is a bit misleading in some places. Don’t get me wrong: I still had a total blast. It’s such a great trail. It’s an experience I continue to daydream about.
Congratulations on your retirement and welcome to the club. I always tell my friends who are working past retirement age that they are missing out on one of the great joys of getting older, the freedom to make every day into whatever you want it to be. You can't do that from behind a desk. I have been retired for almost 3 years now and I haven't regretted the decision once in all that time. Once again, congratulations and I hope that we can cross paths on a trail sometime in the future. Cheers!
Thank you, Jeff.
100% agree! None of us knows how much sand is in our hourglass. I no longer look out the window on a gorgeous day and wish I could be outside riding my bike instead of attending meetings, answering emails, drafting budgets, etc…
@@kellir.747 btw, Jeff puts out great videos if you haven’t subscribed to him yet. I always enjoy his adventures.
Just watched your video on the Katy Trail. Really enjoyed it and plan on doing the trail after my wife completes her 2025 Appalachian Trail. Loved your details and video editing as well as all your descriptions on the trail. Be safe out there and I look forward to viewing more of your work!
Thanks so much. I hope your wife’s AT adventure is awesome. 👏🏼
Delightful! TY for letting us ride along. My backyard is the Rock Island Trail here in KC. Can’t wait for the expansion.
Glad you liked it!
Ok, you have to be the eyes and ears on the expansion because, so far, the articles I’ve read are confusing at best. If you come across future developments would it be too much to ask to forward it: bryan@ridealongadventures.com.
Again, thanks for watching and enjoy that trail!!!! 😀
Great video. It really reflects that relaxed feel that we all get riding a rail trail on a lazy hot sunny day. I am looking so forward to the nice weather finally arriving here in NY so I can start riding the bike again!
Perfect description. Few things are better.
Quite an enjoyable video. We live just a short distance from the MKT, so I've ridden parts of it. But this was great to see all the other parts. Thanks for a masterfully edited video, and enjoyable story.
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, I really enjoyed this trail. So much natural beauty. I hope to get back there some time for another trip.
My wife's family is from Hermann, Mizzurah.. Although when asked by outsiders they say they are from Missouri.. Hermann s a great town with lots of great food, beer, wine adn people..
I really enjoyed that area. Beautiful countryside and super friendly people. I also found out I have a distant cousin there! I’ll add your “Mizzirah” to the computer stats. 😊
Great video.
Felt like I was on the Katy Trail with you.
Thank you.
Hi, Greg. I appreciate that a lot because honestly, that’s my goal. 🙂
Had the same feeling. Anywhere in the world these kind of videos are recorded.
@@GoranVinko thanks. I really appreciate that.
Another great video, another great trail to add to the ‘Bucket List.’
Definitely!
By far in my opinion one of you better videos. They are all good, but this one was extra enjoyable. I got a kick out of sometimes on the trail and when your crossing wooden bridges, your bike sounds like a little train with the clickety clacks. Thanks Bryan!
Thank you! Yeah, this was a really fun ride. That’s a trail I’d really like to do again. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Much appreciated.
Brilliant video! Even the Presidential tidbit was a welcomed bonus!
Thanks, Brian. Who knew we had a one-day President????
By the way, what is it with bike touring and dudes named Brian/Bryan? I’ve met so many. Makes me think we should arrange a national/international (!) ride together.
I was pulling for Barbara Eden!
LOL...me too.
Great video! I’ve watched a lot of Katy trail ride throughs and have to say yours is the best. Just recently discovered your channel and am loving your work -especially the long adventure vids. Happy trails from Wisconsin (great riding here in the summer time)!
Glad you like them! Yeah, Wisconsin is on my list. So many trails and now I have almost unlimited time which makes it harder to choose! If you had to choose just one trail in Wisconsin what would it be?
The Katy is one I’d like to return to. Probably one of the most relaxing routes I’ve ever ridden. Could have been partially my state of mind at the time but the scenery was wonderful.
Btw, Bill Berg is one of my favorite jazz drummers (Flim and the BBs) 😊 sorry…it’s the first thing I thought when I saw your name.
I just retired also, and I decided to do the Camino de Compostela from Rocenvalles to Santiago... I went thru the same though process as you did when I retired... after seeing your video I am now planning to do the Katy Trail..
Good video
That's awesome! good for you. I've heard that is a life changing adventure. Enjoy the Katy. It's a great trail.
We rode in early April 2019, before the floods came.
29:44 we sat at that same table at the cafe in Boonville. Definitely recommend it.
On a later visit by car, we parked at that campground in Portland so we could ride to Hermann. We marveled that anyone would camp there. I guess you had the same feeling. :)
My first bike was some sort of off brand that my dad eventually put motocross bars on. It was cool enough, but then I got a Huffy motocross bike that must have weighed 50 pounds. I loved being out on those bikes. That was the beginning.
I expect to retire soon, so I will be watching more of your videos so you can show me how it's done.
Awesome, dude. Yeah, that campground has stories. A huffy motocross bike!!!!!! Wow. You were living large. Hey man, retirement is a serious adjustment. And I’m still adjusting.
Another excellent vid from Bryan!! I just returned from a major trip from CT to IA,IL,WI,OH,PA,MI, NY and MA to ride a bunch of rail trails on my new gravel bike. There were many instances I thought of you- one which I passed a statute of a man sitting on a bench, I almost, almost, waved at him...chuckled to myself "Oh, Bryan would have definitely waved". Some thoughts: while in Iowa, there were, let's just say at RAGBRAI you should have GNAT SNACKS!! Holy moly!! I loved Iowa! My favorite trail was The Great Miami Trail in Ohio and then I also loved the Illinois Prairie Trail and the Fox River trail in IL.
Anyway, this video was so much fun!! Keep em coming and the longer the video, the better...
Thank you, Amy. Lol…gnat snacks. Wow, sounds like you had quite the adventure yourself! Do you take video? Photos?
I grew up in Cincinnati and I only wish these trails would have been around back then. It’s
really amazing to look at the trail network between Cincy, Dayton, Columbus.
I put your other trails on my list. Thanks for mentioning them.
Excellent vid. I’m loosely planning a fall of 2024 ride on the KATY with my son and can’t wait.
Go for it. I really would like to do this one again soon. There are so many “side quests” to do.
BTW - the birds are Cliff Swallows. Now you don’t have to refer to them as “those birds” any longer. 😅
lol. My question is why "those birds" fly so erratically...like bats almost. It reminded me of the Austin bridge bats...all over the place.
You've done a lot more trips than me, but I did do 9 or 10 days and mainly washed myself out of a sink or with a gallon of water. (you can cut the top off of a gallon jug and it makes a halfway decent sink lol)
That’s a really good idea. In the heat of the summer, there simply aren’t enough baby wipes to get the job done.
@@RideAlongAdventures yea, at the very least I have to get the road dirt off my legs and wash the bottom. Get yourself a buff. They’ll dry out quick and you can wash them decent in a sink lol
Another nice video. I plan on riding the Katy at the end of May this year.
@@TheBane1979 great trail. Enjoy!
Looks like a nice trail no traffic just beautiful trail.
Other than the occasional road crossing, it was wonderfully peaceful and safe. And, yes, the scenery was awesome throughout. Never knew Missouri would be so beautiful.
In Michigan, we have the White Pine Trail. It's 93 miles long, so not nearly as long as the Katy, but I've used it a few times to get to the Mackinaw Bridge. You rolling through some of those towns talking to people and looking for things like a place to eat reminds me a lot of that. Sometimes you get up in the morning and just don't feel like cooking and just want to get rolling. It's a flip of a coin whether or not the next town on the map will have something worth stopping for to get something to eat. Having done that a few times now I've just had to tell myself that I'm going to have to make myself something to eat before I leave.
I used to go to Arkansas a lot for work for a previous employer. They did not like it when I would call their state R-Kans-ass.
Also....
Schwinn Pixie
Schwinn Stingray Jr.
Schwinn Predator
Schwinn World (still have this, bought brand new for my 13th birthday)
Specialized Hardrock
Specialized Rockhopper (still have this)
Sage Storm King (mid-life crisis bike, my favorite)
Lol. I’ll look into the white pine trail. I love northern Michigan…beautiful.
That’s a helluva bike line up!!! Wow. Thanks for watching.
That was awesome!!!
Thank you. It was a really fun trip.
Great trail video. The KATY Roundhouse campground in New Franklin has hot showers. It is probably the nicest campground right on the trail. But as I said it has a great hot shower. I stayed at Cooper's Landing years back and it had no showers then, at least the one was not working. And the attack goose kept us up all night. Cooper's Landing is much bigger in 2023 than in 1995. There was parking for only a few cars and a few camping spots and no food. But we were able to buy a can of Pork and Beans for two of us from the owner for $3.00. Either that or starve.
Thanks for the tips. You’re the second person to mention New Franklin. I’ll have to look into that next time. Wow, I can’t imagine Coopers Landing being smaller!!! I guess they normally have food trucks but they were not there the night i was there so, like you, I ate snacks from their general store. Their beer/wine selection was pretty impressive. Thanks for watching!
@@RideAlongAdventures I wish they had a real store when we went there. I wonder if the guy that owned it then sold it to someone with bigger ambitions. Maybe he still owns it .Just wondering.
Is it just me, or did you smile and laugh more and more as your ride went on? That means you had a lot of fun and felt the effects of all those bike riding endorphins. Thanks for a very entertaining video. 🙂
I did! That was the very start of retired life and the reality was setting in each day. Plus, it’s just an amazingly beautiful trail. Thanks for watching.
@@RideAlongAdventures Retirement is fantastic. I hope yours continues to be. Here are a couple of new adjectives to help you avoid "absolutely gorgeous". I named my little model railroad the NC&A, which simply means Neat, Cool, and Awesome!😋😅🤣
Love the video and commentary! My wife and I rode the trail in April 2009 on Catrike recumbents, camping each night except the last. Really enjoyed it and it was our first trip after retiring.
Right on! Other than the detours in Columbus, it really highlights Ohio in a great way. Glad you and your wife enjoyed it! If you don’t mind me asking, because I’ve got 0 experience with recumbents, how are they on hills like the ones around Holmes county?
Brian, really appreciated your take on the Katy! I enjoyed seeing the same sights, in the opposite direction that I took. I laughed out loud when you entered Tebbets and were looking for food - I knew there wouldn't be much, after staying the night there! Your facts along the way were beautifully presented, too. Thanks for taking us along with you!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the kind words. I really found the Katy to be beautiful, peaceful. Such friendly people.
Great video. I am also retired and enjoy cycling ( 73 years young). I have cycled many sections of the Katy but will be doing the the entire trail, Clinton to Machens, and the end of June, combining camping and B & Bs. Also, I’ll be on last day of RAGBRAI . Good luck with your summer cycling adventures.
Thanks, Bob. You too!
Congratulations on your Retirement 🎊 I sleep in My Toyota all the time.. funny I call it “ Hotel Sienna” I even made a short 🤣😂
lol. That’s hilarious. We should create a new chain with that name. 😂

Nice review of the Katy Trail. Got to add it to my list of trail to ride. 💫
You should! It’s really a great ride. Very friendly people also.
Great video, it was so good I watched it all in one sitting (except for potty breaks 😎). Always had this on my wish list. Now it’s a definite do in the coming year and will have to stay in the hotel in Hermann. Thinking about doing a PBV charter for the Katy. Saw your RAGBRAI videos first. I also did RAGBRAI this year, also did it in 2021, both years were really hot.
Thanks for watching. I really thought the Katy was a special sort of trail. Lots of charm and natural beauty.
congrats on RAGBRAI. Such a great event but, omg, what a challenge. Just saw your other comment on the other video so I'll skip over there now...
Careful on those busy roads!
Absolutely. I’d stay completely clear of that highway if I had it to do again. Btw, your name is awesome-one of the greatest long distance runners in history. I ran about a half mile with him about 20 years ago at the marathon in San Diego. A definitely highlight of my life.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm from boonville, used to ride to pilot Grove or Columbia regularly planning to do the full trail soon, wish me luck
Fantastic. You’ve got a beautiful trail there. Enjoy!
Your Missouri 'analysis' made me laugh out loud! Great vid.
You mean Missourah, right? :) Thanks--glad you enjoy it.
You sir, are the undisputed and undefeated King of Full Rides LOL!
Lol. Can I quote you on that? That’s going on my LinkedIn profile immediately. Might also start dropping that at cocktail parties.
@@RideAlongAdventures Forgot to add...UNDETHRONED! hahaha
@@redcomusic lol. I already used your quote in a meeting this morning. Someone was giving me crap and I said, “do you know who you’re talking to??? RedcoMusic said…” 😂
Nice ride. I've ridden the Katy Trail several times and hope to do it again soon. I may try the Rock Island spur from Kansas City as you suggested. I also need to ride the section from St. Charles to Machens, which I haven't done before. Maybe I'll get to say hi to that dog. I lived several years back in the 70s in Missouri and that's how I pronounce it, but like you a lot of the natives I encountered say Missourah.
Thanks-it was a great trip. It’s funny how many other videos feature that dog!!! Let me know how you like that Rock Island spur. It will be awesome when/if they finish the entire loop!
I really enjoyed this video. I have watched several and this one is among the best ones. I hope to do the trail soon.
Don, thank you. For years, the KATY has always been this wild goal-out of reach. I finally had the time to make the long drive. And it was worth it. Hope you enjoy it as well!
Your videos are awesome, thanks !
Glad you like them!
This has been a very awesome video to watch. I live in St. Charles, MO. You didn't mention any of the history of St. Charles. It's the first capital of the state Lewis & Clark wintered here. The train stop in St. Charles has a park on the backside if it and there are all shirts of signs and statutes dedicated to them. I'm just saying it might be worth your time to stop here next time. Good luck and I'll be watching more of your videos from my living room. My riding is limited to my Stationary Bike. Thanks for the Katy.
Thanks, Sandy. Yeah, I stopped for coffee at St Charles and it looked lovely. By that time, I sort of just wanted to be done. AND I was nervous about the ride to St Louis. Excuses, excuses. I am definitely going back and I’m going to stay there next time. Thanks for watching.
@@RideAlongAdventures of, I'm not done watching. I'm going to start the Florida c2c tomorrow. I'll be watching for the next Katy Trail. Thank you for your amazing videos. Sandy

I really enjoyed the ride.
Loved your Ragbrai video so much. My husband and I just finished the Katy Trail Adventure. Missouri(e) thanks you for sharing. Even our son joined us. He says his parents were not born here, Illinois, and Iowa but say Missouri(e). He has been raised by non native Missourians and says Missouri(e). Just to add to your analysis. Again, it was a thoughtful, funny, enjoyable video. Safe riding ❤
Thank you! Good for you on the Katy trail. Yeah, that was a great ride. I didn’t really know what to expect but I thought Missouri was beautiful and full of that midwestern friendliness. That’s definitely a trail I’d like to get back to some day.
Side note: I’m originally from Ohio and a friend there pointed out that many native Ohioans fail to pronounce the second “O” so we’ve got our own “controversy”. 😊
Again, thanks for watching!
Glad you made it to the Katy. We did it last year. Great adventure along the Missouri River.
Yes it was! That was a special week. Met some incredibly friendly people along the way. Congrats also to you for riding it!

@@mikedaugherty53 nice!! and...your conclusions? I used to travel to Memphis pretty regularly and I got quite snobby about BBQ. :)
I remember riding a 20 inch banana seat bike when I was a kid and the Sears bike like you had and the Huffy bile. I delivered papers with it before going to school, in the winter also. I delivered GRIT and The Post Star papers in Up state N.Y.
Good times! One of these days I'm going hunting for an original Stingray. :)
This is Jose' Wagner . We have spoken with each other before. I'm on my dear mother-in laws (Eula Davis) office computer at her business, a personal care boarding home, where I cover a few night shifts now that I'm retired. I watch at least one or two of your videos each night I work and long to be doing the very same thing. I'll get there. Be well, be safe, talk soon.
Hey, Jose!
I will be at RAGBRAI. Look for black Salsa Warbird with blue tires. Not easy to miss. Would love to say hi. Cheers
I’m skipping this year but I hope to be back in ‘25. Hope you have a fantastic ride! (This reference was for 2023)
Awesome video! Thanks, from this recently retired dude that is either on an adventure, or planning one. 😁 After 42 years in the tech world for a little company the goes by a three letter acronym 🤔, I was ready to go.
Fully understood. The tech spirit totally left my body last year. Good for you dude. Three cheers for “everyday is Saturday”!!! 😂
I spent several years working in the wilds of the Ozarks and most of the older residents said Missourah and also used phrases like "We uns" and will you carry me over to the next town in your car? Shockingly being from Indiana I discovered that in the Ozarks "Hoosier" is a perjorative term, I suspect from a bygone era when there might have been a mass migration from Indiana to Missourah.
Omg, that’s great. We-uns. Love it. I never knew that about Hoosier. I guess sort of like Okies in Grapes of Wrath.
Enjoyed the video! Beautiful scenery. I hate to be that guy…but if you want that helmet to actually protect your head, you might want to tighten the chin strap. It should be snug against your jaw with only enough slack to fit your index finger in there. Also, you might want to invest in a helmet with more modern protection like MIPS. That technology helps prevent the helmet from twisting your neck and potentially breaking it in an accident. Anyway, thanks for sharing and look forward to the next one!
Thanks for the advice, Ross. It’s not “that guy” when you’re expressing legit concern. I appreciate it.
Wisconsin is famous for rail to trails
I’ve heard that! What do you recommend? If I were to come there, where would I/we start?
Try the fox river trail it goes from green bay to Hilbert its about 40 miles. Also try great sauk trail in sauk city wisconsin. Those 2 are great starters
@@chrislambert2090 thank you!
Minnesota has some great rail trails….Central lakes,Mesabi, Paul Bunyan are nice long trails…check em out and thanks for video…We are doing the Katy this Fall🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️🚴🏻♂️
I liked your video of your ride. I am getting close to the end of my work life. It is scarey and exciting at the same time. I have been growing more each year in the vegetable garden. I plan to ride an ebike some but can't ride long distance.
Thanks. Glad you liked it. I’m three months into retirement at this point and it’s been very different than I thought. Feels like a combination of being really antsy but it’s also “always Saturday”. Not sure where the path will lead at this point. Best wishes to you.
Helloo...I'm from Indonesia, nice to watching your bike vlog
Terima kasih, kawan saya!
I grew up riding Stringrays.
Awesome. They were awesome bikes.
What color?
We watched your Ragbrai video and really enjoyed it (we were there). We then watched this video and realized we were on the Katy at the same time. Saw a couple things, such as the Voyager's Van and the large boat, and the dead armadillo! (Week of May 22nd). Had fun seeing if you got us on video but didn't see us.
no way! small world. wasn't that weather awesome? what was your itinerary? this is a trail i want to see again.
@@RideAlongAdventures We were in the St. Louis Metro area going to a High School Graduation. (At the Family Arena, which was on your video) Just did a couple out and back rides out of Marthasville and Treloar. We did the whole Katy about 10 years ago and want to do it again. Yes, the weather was great, we had some friends do Katy in August. Don't do that as it is super hot in Missouri that time of year and water is not readily available. We've done the C&O, GAP, and Pine Creek trail. We'll watch those and see if we recognize anything.
@@scottnyenhuis4984 very cool. Looks like you’ve hit a lot of great trails!
Excellent!!! I'm phyched. You covered every angle ! 100% retention
Awesome-great to talk today.
@Ride Along Adventures no doubt thanks for the information
Great video, as always. Honest opinion, Katy Trail vs GAP/C&O? The Katy trail does look like fun, but also looks like driving across Indiana or Iowa...
It’s a fair question. They are totally different trails. I mean…I like cake and I like ice cream. Sometimes, I prefer a flan (hat’s off to you if you get that reference). They are all great desserts. For me, my favorite trail is the last one I did. 😂 which was the Erie Canal. But then you bring up the GAP C&O and I start thinking, ‘man, I miss that trail’. It’s hard to compare. I guess if you twisted my arm between the two, I’d lean to the GAP C&O for the natural beauty, the hills, the canal, the history. But I really enjoy the Katy too.
@@RideAlongAdventures Thanks for the input! I live in Pittsburgh, so the GAP and C&O are my jam. However, when I have more time in the future, I plan on riding everything I can. Your videos provide great insight into what else is out there! The Pine Creek trail looks great. Def on the list. Thank again.
@@justincapek1132 My wife is from Upper St Clair. I really enjoy Pittsburgh. Great city.
Man, I’d be on the GAP all the time if I were you. 😊
Thanks for the kind words. I’ve enjoyed seeing a lot more of the US since May. And on a bike has been the perfect speed.
Thanks for watching! Maybe sometime we could synch up dawntawn in the Burgh, drink a few Arns and right the trail. (Did I get that right?)
@@justincapek1132 I checked out your GAP video--nice job. I'm always happy to see people do the climb out of Cumberland!
So you’re the one! Haha. Yeah, I’ve done it both ways. Do love the Cumberland downhill, but prefer 120 miles of gradual descent. Plus, as you slow climb, you get to take in more of the views!
Just watched your video on the Katy Trail. Fantastic. We live about an hour south of there and have done most of the trail. I would suggest coming back in the fall when the trees have change colors. Last month we went out to Glacier National Park and rode our bikes up "the road to the sun" to the summit. It's a small window of about two weeks where they close the roads only to hikers and bikers. I would definitely put that on your riding bucket list. We have a few bike ride adventures on our RUclips channel. "Foto Pod Adventures". We will also be doing Ragbrai this year. This will be our fifth time. Thanks again and ride safe.
Thanks so much for the tips and recommendations. I subscribed to your channel. Enjoyed a few of your videos and will watch more later. I was particularly interested in your video/experience in Badlands. So many people tell me I need to go ride there.
I’m really looking forward to RAGBRAI although I have no clue what to expect. Seems chaotic on this end of the experience. I’ll keep an eye out for you guys! 🙂
ditto what Gorrdd says; I look forward to a glass of something and uninterrupted time in front of the TV to watch and enjoy. Hope to do the same come Sept.
I can only hope it is worthy of your time. 🙂
Nice clip mate
Thanks, Russell!
Great video!! Hope to ride with you at RAGBRAI. Doing part of the Katy on the ride there. Although after watching this, I may re-route to KC to ride more of it..🤔
Sounds great! I’m excited although I have no clue how all of the logistics are supposed to work. 😂 I read the info and scratch my head. So…you’re riding the Katy en route to RAGBRAI? Interesting.
@RideAlongAdventures I get it! I was in the same boat. I jumped ship and decided it was easier to just make a big loop out of it. Me and logistics aren't compatible! I'll just follow the other thousands of riders once I get to SC🤣! Have a GREAT ride👍
I don't know if it was the physical workout or just being free among nature, but at the end of the ride, you looked younger than at the beginning. Happy Trails !
All of the above, combined with being newly retired. It's amazing how the immediate reduction in stress can give you back years. :)
Thanks for watching.
Nice video. New subscriber! Do you use a gimbal mount for your GoPro?
Hey, thanks. No gimbal. Just mounted to my handlebars with the stabilization turned on.
Great video! Can't wait for retirement (1.5 years) and riding the trails on my bucket list. Thanks for the history and the music/singing🤣
Thanks, Ed. 1.5 years will go by in a flash! Keep on riding. 👍🏻
Thanks Bryan! I was waiting for this. I haven't seen it yet but will be doing so a bit at a time... as it's a long one.....................😊 which I enjoy.
Gord
yes, long. But remember I had over four hours of footage to start with. It was a great trip--lot of natural beauty.
@@RideAlongAdventures Long is good! It means that I can come back several times to enjoy more of the natural beauty, before it's over.
No doubt you have selected the best of the best. Thanks for taking the time to do all this.
Gord
Great video! Is there usually water fountains at each of the depot stations? Thanks!
That’s a good question. I honestly don’t remember. Maybe this will help: mostateparks.com/advisory/89261/restrooms-and-water-unavailable-some-trailheads-oct-26-march-31-katy-trail-state-park
I think the trail is much better during the fall months
Interested in your thoughts here…is it because of fall colors or temps or…?
@@RideAlongAdventures The fall colors are nice, but also a lot cooler, less people etc
Congrats on retirement Bryan! 11 years to go here! You look too young to retire lol. Thanks again for the great videos... I'm going to start watching this video tonight. 80k/50 mile ride is awaiting me tomorrow morning (and hopefully, the KATY/GAP/C&O/Erie Canal and the 4 River Trail in the future). Happy Trails! Alex 🚴🏼♂️🐎🚵🏻
Thanks, Alex. Yeah, I’m doing a 100k in the morning as well! Rock on!!
I almost didn’t watch this video because of the length, but I took a chance, and I’m SO GLAD I did! This video was so much more entertaining than I expected! I biked the Katy Trail solo in May 2022 and had a great time. Lots of turtles and snakes, a few dead armadillos, and tons of friendly people.
Talk about great people… I stayed at a B&B in Hartsburg, and when the host found out my plans for the day, she packed a peanut butter sandwich and a couple of boiled eggs for me, because she knew there were no food options on that day’s journey. She saved my life! When I got to Portland, I was out of water, and there wasn’t any water at the trailhead. I glanced up the hill and saw a bar and grill next to the River’s Edge Campground, so I headed up to see if I could get water. I no sooner put my empty bottles on the bar, and the bar tender was filling them with ice and water! It was very hot that day, so I lingered a bit to enjoy the air conditioning and an icy beverage. I struck up a conversation with the gentleman next to me and noticed an ice cream freezer in the corner. Since my bike is partially fueled by ice cream, I enjoyed an ice cream sandwich before heading out. When it came time to settle the bill, the bartender told me it had already been taken care of. The gentleman with whom I’d been conversing had paid my tab! What a sweet gesture! It was one of the most memorable events of that trip. I was seeking water in another small town, again, no water at the trailhead. It was mid-morning, and the single bar and grill as not yet open. I knocked on the back door, and a young man answered and said they weren’t open yet. When I explained that I was looking for water, he took my water bottles and filled them. The people were fantastic!
I’m heading back to the Katy in September, and this time I’m focusing on the spurs to Columbia, Jefferson City, Hermann, and Washington. It should be a great adventure!
Great stories!!! Love it. Yeah, there seems to be a friendliness in the Midwest that is hard to find in other areas. I’d never been to MO prior to this and I really enjoyed it and the people.
With regards to the video length, I really don’t know what to do. I did a few videos where I split the trip into individual days but then nobody watched the other days so I just put it all into one video. I’m open to suggestions if you’ve got them. Thanks for watching regardless. I appreciate it.
@@RideAlongAdventures I wouldn’t change a thing about this video. I loved the singing, the commentary, the random trivia, and the BICUS analysis. I subscribed to the channel based on this one video! It was epic! I felt like I was reliving my Katy solo ride (although I’m too spoiled to camp). A couple other of your videos popped up in my feed (Florida and the Pine Creek Trail, which I’ve ridden as well), but I didn’t find them nearly as entertaining as the Katy video, because they just didn’t contain the colorful commentary and random trivia.
@@RideAlongAdventures I really enjoy full length riding videos like these. They emphasize the feel and scenery. Bicycle Touring Pro channel records his bike tours in similar fashion. With his riding companions. Can't beat it. Looking forward to more full length vids like these. Thanks.
My Google Maps lady pronounced it Misery. As in St. Louis, Misery. She cracks me up sometimes.
Lol.
Looking forward to your next video . I’m really thinking about doing the route you did in Florida .
Thank you, Stephen. Let me know if you’ve got questions about the Florida route. I really enjoyed that one. I’m thinking of going back there as well. Maybe further inland.
The real mystery of Meriwether Lewis is the circumstances of his death at an Inn on the Natchez Trace. Nobody can be certain that it was suicide or murder.
So true. I read he suffered from “dark spells” and had even attempted suicide on the Expedition. Sad either way. He was a gifted dude who had the absolute respect of many.
That’s a trail I really want to ride in ‘24.
Wish you had pointed out the towns you passed by, even if you didn't stop.
Yup. Good point.
Absolutely gorgeous! Some might even say resplendent! Loved BICUS. I may have some useless data I would like to analyze! Awesome video.
Lol. I was thinking how funny humans create something like chatgpt and instead of plugging in “solve world hunger” people input “create a picture of Wonder Woman eating sushi on Mars”. BICUS rules.
Lol. Trying the Wonder Woman on mars thing right now😂
@@MrBobgrover omg…is this “the” Bob? 😂
I like biking with you. At 73 , I can no longer do it so I ride along with you. May I give some constructive criticism. As handsome as you are I think you spend too much time with your face on the screen. Watch NYC Walking Show or Action Kid in New York. They walk and talk to us at the same time but rarely do you see their face. I like to see who's talking but not quite as much as you do. Thank you for pointing out sights , sounds, wildlife, flowers etc along the way. You really hit the trail so I enjoy watching you. Talking to us helps with the loneliness.
I appreciate the feedback and I will take your comments to heart. I try to interject photos and other footage during talk time. Obviously I need to do more. Thanks for watching and “riding along with me”.
How much do these campground/stops cost? Trying to plan a future trip.
Some are free (Clinton Community Center, Pilot Grove city park, etc.) but for others, rates change. Please refer to bikekatytrail.com for the latest. One small tip: the rates are directly related to the convenience of other stuff like availability of food and places to shower.
That was a great video Bryan, enjoyed it through and through. Had me laughing so hard at times. That truly is a beautiful part of the country. Glad you went to the Katy, and had a great time. My first bike was Frankenstein bike the bike shop put together from all different bikes, had a schwin frame though.
thanks, Scott. Glad you enjoyed it. I've already been asked to never sing again. :)
That's funny...you made me remember the "Frankenstein" I assembled from an old bike that was passed down to me. No name brand. it was green and I somehow got some drop down handlebars. I think it was a single-speed but, for me, it was Tour de France ready.
Yeah, I'm thinking of maybe going back for the group ride (I think they call it the BAM, Bike across Missouri) in October. www.bigbamride.com
Hope you're ready for a sing-a-long on the Pine Creek. :)
@Ride Along Adventures Bryan, bring the karaoke machine! Lol. Mine was a green stingray frame with a white banana seat a 20". I build all my bikes, so I guess all mine are "Frankenstein" models. Lol
BAM sounds interesting, I'm going to look that up. Pine Creek .....lookout here we come...
Great video thanks so much, I’m definitely thinking about doing the Katy Trail now based on your video. As for Ragbrai, I’ve done it six times I’ve enjoyed everyone of them. I think you’ll find Iowa and the wonderful people there and the towns you will travel through every bit as friendly, and as welcoming as you did the people you met along the Katy Trail. Don’t think Iowa is flat, flat it is NOT and get used to being on the road with 18,000 of your closest friends. It is an experience that every cyclist should do at least once.
Thank you. I’m really looking for to Iowa. A few years ago our company acquired a manufacturing site in Iowa and the first thing that hit me was just how friendly the workers were. Like genuinely kind and gracious. As I said at the end, I’ve been guilty of “flyover syndrome” for so many years. Need to get back down to earth!!
Congratz! the views on the trail look really nice!
It's what I hate about riding on roadways in the US. No shoulder/broken up shoulders, those damned rumble textures (which I would appreciate as a divider to a wide shoulder/bikepath)
What tires are you running on your touring bike? Would you go thinner or wider for the trail? tread? how did they perform on more coarse sections?
Thanks. You know, this is a topic I really don’t know much about. I started with 38s that came with the bike. Moved to 40s and just now to 43s. (45 is the max for my bike). I don’t know…I guess the increase has made for a smoother ride overall. The Katy is so well groomed I’m not really sure what is truly needed. Yeah, when I do hit coarse areas, I’m happy to just plough through with big tires. Seems like a lot of adventure/gravel bikes come with 40s but I think that is a trade off for road riding. Is that confusing enough? 😊 I agree with you about rumble strips…my gosh, why not put it on the OTHER side of the white line???? Why not alert a driver that they are about to cross the line, not that you’re already across???????!!!!!! That was nerve wracking with like 3” of space.
@@RideAlongAdventures You got it perfect bud! Rather than repeat industry tech speak, It's great to hear from a person that experienced it firsthand. On wider tires, usually higher casing thread count (pricier) will make wider tires roll better on hardtop. Would be nice if someone had heavy duty spigots on the trail for water and a quick wash up too. Cheers and thanks!
@ride along adventures . May I ask how and where you parked your vehicle in St. Louis for your RiverRunner train ride?
Sure. I don’t remember the exact lot but it was about a block away from the Amtrak station. I used the parking panda app. It was an outdoor lot. I think it was this one: maps.app.goo.gl/8vpNa517HafZQBur5?g_st=ic
Thank you, I went on 12 miles today for father's day family outing and really want to do it now... one thing you went too fast.... 😢 no details on where you slept rested, etc is it easy to camp?
Yes! There are a lot of campsites. I did a “tips” video you might like: A Short Guide to the KATY Trail

The Kathy trail is on my target list, if not this year then next for sure. Thanks for the video. 👍
Thomas, with all of your recent travels, I was totally expecting to run into you on this trail THIS year!! :) You've had a heck of an adventure, my friend! Thanks for your videos.
@@RideAlongAdventures that would be cool. I would love to ride it this year but will see. 🙂
Congrats on retirement, some people just take to it instantly, it took me a bit. After a month or two i loved it. I got up every morning 5:15 am for 32 years. Started riding my bike and poof found my thing. Nice ride thanks for sharing. P.S. is your brooks a B17?
Thanks, Ken. I can appreciate that. Same here. Still waking up. Still headed to my office chair at home. Staring at the screen.
Yes, A B-17. I still can’t believe how comfortable it has become.
Do you use a drone for your frontal shots?
It’s a secret. 🤫
Actually, it’s a Insta360 camera extended out in front. It’s pretty cool because it edits out the stick so it looks like a drone. But don’t tell anybody.
Retired looking for something to do...what would someone pay for a ride from Warrrensburg to Clinton? I am guessing you got off at Warrensburg train...
Yes I did and it's an excellent question but I'm not sure on price. If you look at bikekatytrail.com/share-a-ride.aspx there are a lot of services but I think there are some gaps like the one you mentioned as well as something from Windsor to Clinton. The other need is someone to do daily bag transfer if a group is doing the entire trail. A few weeks ago I was on the Erie Canal Trail and came across an entrepreneur who just drives along with the tour group. I'd say there were 25-30 people in that group so I'd imagine that would be profitable.
I've been approached about doing guided tours but I've been hesitant because the additional logistics are demanding but if there are people like you willing to consider that, maybe it's more possible.
😂. Great video as usual. Looks like something I need to add to my list for retirement… oh 11 years, 6 months and 18 days…
Thanks, Jen. It was worth the long drive-beautiful countryside.
Congratulations on retirement! Can you tell me what bike your riding?
Thanks, Roger! Most of the time, I ride my Trek Checkpoint ALR5. I really like it. Sturdy, solid ride.
