- Hi Campers,
This week I go backpacking into the Mount Rose Wilderness of western Nevada right after a nice snow fall. The temperatures drop down to 10 degrees and I need to stay warm...ultimately building a camp fire and the telling the legendary story of Snowshoe Thompson...the Norwegian skier who delivered mail across the Sierra Nevada mountains on skis!!!
( for twenty years between 1856 - 1876! )
Also testing out my new sleeping bag...the KELTY Cosmic Down 0 !!!
Keep Hiking!

Snowshoe Thompson Wiki
Between 1856 and 1876, he delivered mail between Placerville, California and Genoa, Nevada and later Virginia City, Nevada. Despite his nickname, he did not make use of the snowshoes that are native to North America, but rather would travel with what the local people applied that term to: ten-foot (over 3-meter) skis, and a single sturdy pole generally held in both hands at once. He knew this version of cross-country skiing from his native Norway, and employed it during the winter as one of the earlier pioneers of backcountry skiing in the United States. Thompson delivered the first silver ore to be mined from the Comstock Lode. Later he taught others how to make skis, as well as the basics of their use. Despite his twenty years of service, he was never paid for delivering the mail.[11]
Thompson typically made the eastward trip in three days, and the return trip in two days. Thompson carried no blanket and no gun; he claimed he was never lost even in blizzards. A rescue attributed to him was that of a man trapped in his cabin by unusually deep snow. Thompson reached him, realized the damage to the man's legs from frostbite was sufficient to kill him, skied out to get chloroform, skied back in with it, and delivered the chloroform in time to save him.[9]
Thompson usually traveled the route known as "Johnson's Cutoff", a pathway first marked by John Calhoun Johnson, an early explorer and first man to deliver mail over the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Today this approximates the route of U.S. Route 50 as it winds its way from Placerville, California to South Lake Tahoe.
It is shocking (to me at least) how undersubscribed this channel is. It is like $20 bill lying on the sidewalk, and no one picking it up. You sir, are a treasure. Thanks for sharing with us. Very much appreciated!
Same, it is one of the finest youtube Channel about hiking, tent, reviews, etc ⛺
I was surprised too. There are a lot of hiking channels, and gear review channels, but Chris brings them together nicely, and he adds a dash of good cooking and interesting history lessons to the mix. I try to never miss an episode.
Agreed, very apt observation. Cheers.
Chris has a friendly demeanor and historical outlook during his adventures. Mix that with his equipment reviews and IPA's = awesome. It's informative, educational and adventurous at the same time. It a true hidden gem!!
Thank you very much !! You are all very encouraging!
Thanks Chris, you never disappoint with your campfire stories
Glad you enjoyed it Calvin!
I hear ya just got to wait till after dinner we are waiting patiently. Mr Broccoli 😋🤔
Btw.. I watch slot BigFoot videos, seem like you venture into the deep woods without a thoughts hesitation on what may lurk in the shadows! Such courage!! So exciting your history, stories and love camping!! Thank you!!!
Thank you Chris for that interesting story of Snowshoe Thomson. John Thomson was a tough dude, but died at the age of 49 from complications from appendicitis.
God bless Snowshoe Thompson, what a legend. Awesome as always Chris, keep hiking
Thank you so much!
Another fun adventure. I love story time with Chris. Great local history.
Glad you enjoyed it Liz!
Great video and thanks for sharing the story about my fellow Norwegian. I can't believe I've never heard of him.
Thank you Geir! Yes, Quite a character.
What an amazing history lesson. I loved the story. Beautiful area you camped in. Greetings from Ontario Canada

Loved this story !! So amazing to hear what this courageous man did besides deliver the mail!! Thank u for sharing!!!
Watching your videos always have a feeling of seeing an good friend. Thanks Chris!
Well Thank you Twocross!!
Awesome historical knowledge which is very enjoyable to listen to. You are well rounded with your love of hiking, of good and interesting beer, and your camp-cooking skills as well as reviews of useful camping gear and lots of real and useful information. Your rugged zest for life in the great outdoors is awesome. This historical figure is a super-hero for sure, Cheers !
Winter camping, cool history lesson and more cooking. I have never heard of 'Snowshoe Thompson', quite the rugged individual. Too bad your electronics didn't like the cold. Great camera work and your editing and cut scenes were sublime. I did enjoy the festive blinking Christmas lights. Your positivity is so contagious and makes this channel a real pleasure to watch. Merry Christmas Chris, to you and your family. As always stay safe and cheers.
Well Thank you Ben!! Appreciate the kind words. Merry Christmas!
Love your stories. Chris . You have the perfect personality to recount these stories. Stay safe !
Glad you like them!
Very good Chris, Snowshoe Thompson was one tough Norwegian, no wonder they were such feared raiders back in the Viking days. Just imagine a whole platoon of Snowshoe Thompson’s attacking your little village at 50 mph on skis!
Yes, that would be a sight...a whole platoon!
Chris thanks so much for this video. As a guy who stopped watching TV and radio a couple years ago (couldn't watch the world through that lense any more) it can get lonely and small. It's such a treat to sit back and here a story that I'd never hear but is worthy of telling in such a fun setting. The accuracy and perfect detail of the story didn't matter at all simply because of your intentions....so different than TV....was just to entertain and inform a little. It was obvious and enjoyable. Thanks for the effort.
Thank You! yes...having fun and sharing it!
Same, stop having a tv in my home 25+ years ago… and one day I just turned the radio off which was odd for me because I enjoyed public radio programming but then it seemed bleak or as I grew older nothing seemed changed … the world still felt dark …
I simply enjoy Chris post !

🤗
Appreciate it...Thanks Ronald, you too!
Really beautiful area I love your camp story’s. Merry Christmas.
Thank you! You too!
I love the sound of a crackling campfire. I didn’t realize you could build a fire on snow!! Not only are your stories riveting, but I also learn a lot about camping. Thanks Chris, I also love how you show your whole experience. ❤❤❤
Thanks 👍
Great story, Chris. And thanks for sharing your adventure.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey, Chris, Loved your story about the skiing mailman. It's great to have the illustrations. Once the campfire gets going, camping improves a lot.
Hi Art! The campfire made it all work for me...good light/ warmth and sounds even! Keep Hiking!!
I've been homeless in winter and one thing I learned about cold temperature is to let your body adjust to the outside temperature from season to season. I found that I was less sick being homeless than living in a place
Enjoyed the video and the story about Snowshoe Thompson. Really interesting how he traversed the Sierra Nevada's with all that mail. Pork chop dinner looked good! I'm an avid camper spring thru fall. Have camped in the snow. Camping is great! Take care & stay safe! Merry Christmas! Loved the Christmas lights!
Thank you Judy! Merry Christmas!
A super-fun video, one of my favorites so far. Amazing story about an amazing individual, shows you that there are and have been extraordinary people who can/could do some extraordinary things. The Christmas lights were fantastic, Christmas time in a tent! Hope you have a wonderful Christmas!!
Thank you....Enjoy your Christmas!
Another great adventure. Beautiful mountains with all that snow. I really enjoy all the campfire stories and history stuff.
Glad you enjoyed it...keep hiking!
Loved the story of Snow shoe Thompson. Thanks for the entertainment.
Welcome Christopher!
I learn a great deal on this channel about camping, history, and strange encounters. I know it must be a lot of work to work with the camera. You deserve all the subscribers and success!
I’m a new subscriber from Ireland 🇮🇪 I’ve watched 3 of your videos and I’ve really enjoyed them 😊 You’ve a natural in front of the camera 📷 and I love your storytelling ☺️
Awesome! Thank you, Carmel!
Great and fascinating storytelling! Thank you Chris for this video! You are awesome!
Thanks so much! KP HIKING!
Great video Chris. It's nice to see how well your equipment stands up to these harsh conditions. Sierra Nevada is a great season beer btw. Take care
Yes - the gear can make the difference! SN is one of my favorite beers! They have quite a line of Beers to choose from...
Great video Chris.
The tent looked quite cozy with Christmas lights. 🎄
Thanks 👍
Hey buddy just a fire starting tip in snow…put a platform of thicker sticks as a base to build your fire on top of. Not only does it help with airflow but also helps get your fire started by insulting it from the ground or snow. I use this technique regardless of conditions but it really helps in snow or wet conditions. Hope that helps your future fire building!
True words. I’m surprised he doesn’t know this, he’s an avid camper/fire starter…… but I caught that in a few of his videos.
I don't know how anyone can stand the bitter cold...but I do love listening to your stories. Fun to hear you tell them.
Love your channel and videos it is a special treat at the end of a long day. Thank you for these history lesson s of the west. (I am from PA) The tent lights were classic Chris! Be well and Trail on! Till the next adventure... Merry Christmas!!

Excellent content. Thanks for sharing your experience. It's looks so beautiful out there !
It really is! Thanks for watching! Fresh snow is always the best!
What a great story and what a great venue, snow and a warm fire. I am awed by your tenacity, to hike, set up camp ,cook and share some history, all while moving a camera around to capture the moments. You make it look easy, which for sure it is not. You are an inspiration.
Enjoy your stories as well as the campfire in your tent accommodations so thank you
Love this broadcast and story of Horseshoe Thompson. My relative was a mountain man, Old Bill Williams, maybe they knew each other. Thanks for the fire-building how-to, . Merry Christmas!
Happy holidays! including the 4th of July!! lol
I love the old pictures. Their clothes look so cold for skying.

I've come to enjoy a hot water bottle. Melt snow and you're good to go. Thanks for your videos!
Really good idea! Welcome!
I was surprised that I was unsubscribed. Why does RUclips do that! Back again! I have friends who are going to Genoa in Nevada and I had to find this video. What an AMAZING mailman! Love and warm regards.Chris😅
I love watching you cook in the wild, my father was a gourmet cook (amateur). I'm not sure he'd approve of the ketchup-catsup :)
Merry Christmas, Chris! Hope you are having a great holiday season!
For your fire on the snow. Put a layer of larger logs down as a base, then build your fire on top. Will make a hot long lasting fire. :)
Great idea! Kept it simple and got it done.
Merry Christmas to you.Enjoy your adventures and stories.Motivates me to keep up my hiking and love of the mountains.
Happy holidays! Keep Hiking!
Great telling of the Snowshoe Thompson story. Could be a movie!
I love this dude .He s got good energy.
He s lucky too. To be living where there is “ actually “ sunny ..mountains in the dead of winter. Up here in WA state we’re shit outta luck most the season.
Thanks for watching Td Di! Keep Hiking!
Your Christmas lights remind me of the song A Star Fell From Heaven ..lol. Great camp Chris interesting history lesson fine food. If you get a thick seak just butterfly it out it cooks easier and quicker. Seasons Greetings to you and your family. Bushyboy Oz.
Thanks Ewen 👍good idea on the steak/ chop.
Hey Chris, I just subscribed, because I just watched about 6-7 of your videos and I’m hooked on your storytelling and the ambience of the great outdoors. What a great idea! Keep on making em and I’ll keep on watching em?
Funny the first comment was exactly what I was thinking! I switched from other camping videos I watch and thinking let’s go find a Chris vid I haven’t seen yet. I specifically wanted to compare the # of subscribers vs number of years on YT. I forecast Chris will grow EXPONENTIALLY in the future as he does everything right. Not too long, obviously is FULL OF ENERGY and puts so much in a not too long video. Love it!
People don’t realize how hard it is to start and maintain a fire in low temp. I was Kalispell and it was in the 20’s, had fire log starters and lighters and it took a New York minute to get that thing going.
Good stuff you got goin 🙌🏼
Thanks for another excellent video Chris! I have a salt n pepper blend in one side of my shaker and Lawry's/Cajun seasoning on the other. More options for seasoning is always great.
That's a good idea! Options make the meal!
Hey Chris to be honest with you I found passion for cooking while kayak camping here in Florida along the Halifax River I appreciate you a lot God bless 🏕️ 🕊️ 🙏
That is awesome! Thank you so much!
I love the winter camping it's cool I'm goona move to the bush when I get everything I need to survive outdoors
I am actually watching this video setting in my home in S.E. Alaska. March 2, 2024. And guess what? It is 12° outside. Lol always fun to watch.
I originally planned on buying a Big Bertha tent. Went to the BIG REI store in Seattle Wa. To get it. They have really neat “testing setups” for all the equipment they sell….. so I wanted to set up the tent in their outside area. Well….didn’t need to, they already had a full on “forest area” set up with the various backpacking tents. ANYWAY…. I ended up buying one of their own REI backpacking tent because of all the features. I got the 2 person tent so I could keep all my stuff inside the tent, plus it had all kinds of cool pockets, hang lines, zippers and tabs all over the inside of the tent. Greatest thing I ever bought.
I grew up in a small Gold Rush town near Placerville and went to high school in Placerville in the,60s, a lot of history there, I loved this story
Chris……thanks for dragging us along…..great adventure !!!!! Happy Holidays to you….
Happy holidays!
I love your videos chris! Love the stories, and I love building fires so really enjoy your building fires, especially in that cold. Interesting stories! Thank you, and take care of yourself out there!
Chris, love ur channel, love ur adventure, really get a kick out of ur stories. New fan & will keep looking 4 ur feeds. Eastern High Sierras has been my home away from home since 1978. From Kennedy meadows 2 Tahoe. Been camping (now in a trailer) all my life. Parent's started it back when Yosemite had the fire falls, moose lived peacefully in the meadows & the Indian caves were open 2 the public. Keep up the good works! I'll b back 2 our Sierra in 3 weeks! See-ya
Beauty all around.
