- Hi Campers,
I go out to central Nevada and spend the night camping in the desert at an abandoned Pony Express Station. I talk about the short history of this early form of western communication and how it helped the U.S. when it needed these young men to deliver news, mail and information to California. I cook a delicious gourmet Bison Burger for my dinner and spend the night under the stars!
Keep Hiking!

My favorite hiking RUclipsr. I instantly click like when watching your videos
Thank you so much! Keep Hiking!
Dang you eat well Chris! (and top it off with a nice brew!) The history you share is like dessert! Keep Hiking!
Once again, a great video. I always look forward to these history lesson adventures. I admire the fact that you have to make parts of these hikes twice so you can place/pick up the camera. It adds to the style of the video. I like to mix onion soup mix into the ground beef (bison in this case). Mushrooms would have been nice too (Now I'm hungry!). It's such a great format - the hike, the history, and the meals, with a little gear review snuck in. You keep topping yourself. I'm waiting for a video from the moon! Peace!
Thanks for the great comment! Moon would be a good hike!
Totally agree. This format is great.
Mark took the words right out of my mouth. The moon would be a long hike bahahaha
That ending desert scene reminded me of Clint Eastwood, The good, the bad and the ugly. Don’t die Blondie! 😂👍
LOL...classic film...Tuco!
Desert camel cricket ( Stenopelmatoidea) from the desert south west primarily
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this.
Glad you enjoyed it
So awesome!! I love the tales of the Wild West! 🤠
Glad you like them! Thanks ...we have a great history!!
Came to this two years later but love it! When I was younger I'd fantasize about being a pony express rider or stage coach driver. Love your channel, Chris, you're =creating such a great platform. Keep on hiking.
Thanks so much...I should head back out there! C
My favourite story teller Chris, love that giggle and sense of humour love from Australia 🇦🇺
I am loving your stories. I watched a bunch now, marking them off. I cant believe how old they riders were so crazy.
I’ve spent many, many nights camping and riding at Sand Mountain! It’s Glorious at night! Sooo many stars….
When I see ruins like this I often wish I had a way to rewind time and see what they originally looked like.
As a horse fanatic I dreamed of being a pony express rider when I grew up. I didn’t know about the telegraph😂
Thank you! Enjoyed watching.
That's great...Thank you Randy!
Great story Chris, that Buffalo burger looked great it was making me Hungary at midnight lol, keep hiking!
Hi Chris, thanks for taking us to this station. It is a cool place and love the trivia you tell us. 😄
Amazing at how determined kids back then could be.
I really like the trivia you have on all of these.
Always enjoy the history you bring to your videos. Sand dune was cool…got your morning workout in! 🥵
Thank you Ronald👍 always appreciated! looks like a fun place to camp for the sand dunes.
Nice music, historical facts and hiking adventure, fun !
Cicada Chris. Have never seen one in the prairie, only treeded areas. So cool! Love the sound they make! Pony Express, very awsome!
Yum! Klausen dill pickle and onion's are missing. Burger looks fantastic. You mentioned packed on ice. Would it be possible for you to show us how you pack food in your backpack? Keep up the good humor and great videos!
Thanks! I'll try and fit that in.
Happy Fathers Day Chris!
Thank you Calvin!
You really are crazy, ya know that, right?! Thank you for the great entertainment! Rosey in Freeville & loving life!
Amazing video. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us.
Thanks D Rob!
Fascinating story.
In January/February, Pony Express is revived in AZ. They leave Holbrook and ride south 200 miles to Scottsdale. You can actually send letters first class.
Do they still only employ orphans or young men under 125 pounds?❤
Pretty cool!!!
Great video Chris I really like that you incorporate some amazing American history in your videos. Love if you could hike the High Sierra one day!!!
Thanks - I did 3 or trips last year,,,,ruclips.net/video/u2Xsryqdrzc/видео.html
Yes .. for me the add ins really make the whole video work. Well done looked a fascinating adventure. Thanks for sharing. Bushyboy Oz.
Hello 👋 Chris, thank you for the tag along on this amazing adventure. You go to some unique places. I appreciate your great narrating. This was definitely a two thumbs up 👍 👌 video. The insect was a Nevada desert creature. 🤣 All the best of good things for you. Stay safe and healthy out there. Back in the mid
70s family and friends would take dune baggies and camp at the base of Sand Mountain. 🤗
Thanks Ronald! interesting area...looks like a good place to camp for the riders.
Thanks again for sharing all of your adventures and now I need to get me a buffalo burger!
On a wood or charcoal grill❤like the cowboys
I love the history lessons.😁

old sites like that and a metal detector can be exciting.
What a great video. Loved to see the Pony Express station and learn about it's history, the sand dunes were incredible. Thanks, Chris!
That was fun and educational!! Thank you very much!🐪🐫⛺🏜️
Chris, I grew up on the Pony Express trail above Sacramento. There were 3 hotels still there.
Hey, I live in St. Joseph Mo. 2 miles away from the pony express museum!
Has got to be one of the coolest places you have camped 🤗
Definitely!
Amazing adventure, thanks for taking us all along 👏🏼

Chris that was a Fun and Interesting video love your Adventures 🤠
Great video, I just subscribed. For some reason your video format has bits of reminiscent resemblance to the old John Viehman Trailside videos that I so fondly remember.
Cool, thanks! I remember that show from the 90's !!
Bison burger...!!!
I'm in !
Wow ! Just loved this !!
What an amazing place to stay. I could almost feel the history emanating from those walls. Thanks for these amazing adventures!

Thank you for the on location history lesson.
Welcome - great history out there.
I visited St Joseph Missouri and saw the pony express history .
Wow, what a beautiful sand dune! This video was great. I loved the history lesson on the Pony Express. I love how you mixed history, storytelling and just hiking and camping in this video.
Thank you! Cheers!!
Awesome video Chris! You may need to invest in a drone with a camera for some of these desert videos. Would be awesome to see you running around a dune from a drone!
Love your videos!
Danke für das tolle Video
Very welcome! Keep Hiking!
Sand Mountain is one of my favorite places to camp and atving.
Love your videos, thanks
Thanks for watching!
Thank you chris
Always interesting videos Chris. Try to stay cool in this heatwave we’re having out west, 110 today in Sacramento, 108 yesterday. I believe that was a Mormon Cricket on your tent, they are a type of Katydid. I heard all about them when I lived in Utah.
Yes, good to know...he was huge. Thank you. Gonna be hot for awhile...
Keep the videos coming
I can’t send a pic, but I saw this wooden sign that made me think of you. Four boards, stenciled with some green fir trees, underneath in various size fonts:
ENJOY NATURE
GO HUNTING
CATCH A FISH
SHARE STORIES
SKIP ROCKS
BUILD A CAMPFIRE
EXPLORE
MAKE MEMORIES
😬
Very nice! C🐻🌲🍺
Every time he said “Buffalo burger” I kept thinking for a brief moment that it’s buffalo FLAVORED, not that it’s made of buffalo.
Haha❤ I was thinking he should have used Buffalo sauce instead of BBQ sauce 😅. I use to work at a restaurant at Notre Dame and we had a burger called The peanut butter burger. It sounded so gross. But after a couple years I tried it. It was grilled on an open flame charbroiler and there was a slice of cheddar, a nice dollop of honey, a spread of peanut butter, and of course the lettuce, tomato and onion. The absolute best burger I EVER ate. They don't sell them anymore and I don't work there anymore. But I will make them at home❤
Here in oklahoma we have a small desert called the little sahara with lots of dunes and buggys with special tires called paddles to help the dune buggies get around
That's cool...I've heard of that.
Wish I was out there with you Chris! My kind of hike and overnighted!!
Another great video. Thanks!
Great spot! As if camping by a bomber wasn't cool enough? Dude that burger looked so good, going to have to go get some Bison. How did you keep it from drying out, it gets overdone so fast because its so lean. There is a Pony Express charity ride from Minnesota into Iowa for Camp Sunnyside, that I did as kid. It was relay style with a 'money bag', one mile as fast as you dared. So jealous.
Very cool...I'm from Minnesota have not heard of that ride...sounds like a great trip. Keep Hiking!
Fun video!! Thanks for sharing this with us !! 👍👍😎
When you going to camp in your tent trailer ?? Will you make a video of it ?? Thanks for all your videos!!
Yes, soon...been enjoying the backpack trips.
Here in oklahoma we have cross bred Beefallo bovine and bison blend burgers cause bison are soooo lean
Thanks Calvin very cool. ( Beefallo ! )
I add some olive oil to really lean burger meat. ❤
That looked like a tasty burger !!! I’m with you on the coffee, Hot Yes , cold NO !!! Awesome sand dunes !!!! I was looking at the jetboil stash also, you will have to do a review on it and let us know what you think 🤔!!!! Great video Chris !!
Thank you IH! It was a fun trip.
Awesome! 😂
Great hike and campout! Really enjoyed all the history about the pony express, thanks for sharing. :) :)
Glad you enjoyed it Jaqueline!
Another awesome trip! Lots of facts I never heard, loved it bud
Much appreciated!
That was a big sandwich to eat in the late 90s here in NJ..I haven't seen on menus lately
They switched it to a veggie burger. Kroger sells bison burgers ❤
Love your videos , your so funny 😂great info Chris 😎your a great chief🤠
Thanks 👍 Cherl!
Amazing you don't get Sand in the food when making breakfast
Hey Chris 👍🙏🏻✌️💪🏻
By the way, that burger looked awesome and made us hungry...lol.
RIP Bill Tate ...no complaints next time postman delivers to your neighbour in error.
exactly...just hope he wasn't delivering junk mail.
Interesting
Gee, very beautiful country side. But it kinda looks like also snake country , be cautious , Chris.👍👍👍
Billy Tate: teenage badass
rip courageous young 'in.
❤❤❤
Lifes a beach
Those are actually really healthy.
I guess they are leaner.
I think the bug was a Jerusalem cricket, but, I could be wrong.
in the 90s, you barely need the stove. Pick out a rock in the sun.
The poster said, "not over 82".
@basecampchris in the spirit of the Pony Express, did you get into camp packing at least a 6 shooters like the historic riders?
Nerdy question: How do you clean up your dishes? I'm looking to get a good backpacking, leave-no-trace system for that.
In the desert...Water/ scrub with natural soap/ quick rinse into a small dug out hole or pack out if a one nighter and wash at home.
I have heard that the wagon train people that when traveling where there was little to no water would clean up their dishes with the sand. Saw it done in an old western movie too.
The lincoln highway?
Of the various wild game, bison tastes best. Venison and elk etc. just too gamie for me. Can’t eat it unless smothered in butter, garlic and onions. But bison tastes like beef.
Was that a grasshopper?
It was a katydid.❤
@basecampchris dude when you said you found a local resident, I thought it was a rattlesnake... You scared me...
The memo had a typo... young ,skinny wiry fellows, not over 82 years old !
Lioks like some kind of beetle not q locust or cicada.
Die Gesichte ist sehr interesand
A water cricket
mormon cricket? Anabrus simplex
Run down and climb back up to get your camera? I think I would have tied a line to it and drug it down to you. Seems like a lot of work to make the video. So all I can say is: “Thank you.” That was a fun video.
One little critique, if I may....it's more of a nervous laugh thing with you....but when you're talking about someone dying, please don't chuckle.....
