I was in China for 10 days at the begging of September during my summer holidays, and Shanghai was the first city I visited. I will never forget the first time I saw the Oriental Pearl. Early evening, a little drizzle, very hot and humid and the skyline was in the clouds. Pictures and videos do not do this place justice. It's otherworldly beautiful. Watching your lovely video I realized how much I miss Shanghai. Hopefully I'll go back next year because I've decided to spend my summer holidays in China from now on (if God wants). Just avoid the hot months of July and August. Spring time is the best time to visit, around Easter. 🙂

I love Shanghai, I was there in 2018. The people are so friendly and so much to see. I wish I could have explored more but I was staying and having to work in Pudong for a short while. Haha, many people think that a large Chinese city like Shanghai, with its huge population, would be very crowded and noisy, like Southeast Asian cities filled with the rumble of motorcycles and gasoline-powered vehicles. However, when they actually arrive in Shanghai, they find that everything is quite quiet. The streets are filled with electric vehicles that make very little noise and have zero emissions, which means they don’t pollute the air. I’ve seen too many foreign RUclipsrs surprised by the calm atmosphere in Shanghai.
Indeed. When I was in China for the first time, over the holidays in 2006 and into January of 2007, I went to Shanghai on like Boxing Day of 2006 (or maybe the 27th, I can't remember after all these years) and it was very peaceful and really not crowded at all. No wait to go up the Oriental Pearl TV tower, no wait really to get a table at the original Shanghainese xiaolong bao place in Yuyuan garden and so on. Late June of 2010 (during my last trip to China) it was however a completely different story... Not just more of a tourist season in general, but also the world expo being held in Shanghai at the time 😂 It would have been like 3 hours of wait to go up the Oriental Pearl that time. I think most of the crowd was due to the world expo tbh as the event pulled in significantly more people than just regular tourism would. I mainly stayed in Suzhou during my stays in China, it's not very far away from Shanghai. And with me being Swedish, I'm used to being in a country of about 10 million people, so you can imagine the culture shock I was expecting when going to China where many cities have more people in them than my whole home country, but I honestly never felt it was crowded, other than on very few occasions like during the visit in Shanghai during the expo, or when celebrating New Year's at a temple in Suzhou, or being at a subway train in Beijing on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon one time. Other than that it honestly felt less crowded than when going to a medium sized or large city in Scandinavia or Europe. Suzhou alone had some 12 million people in the city and surrounding area at the time when I visited, but somehow they've managed to keep the small town feel in a way. I always felt very relaxed in Suzhou, and it's such a stunning place and good balance between ultra modern and traditional. Shanghai does the same, balancing between ultra modern and traditional

My elementry school was next to that church in people square 38 years ago. I can still remember the sound of that bell. and yes, we do have a half day school on Saturday.

Perhaps they can learn something from Shanghai.Especially keeping the city clean and no homeless people.The subway trains run on time and kept clean.
Had an overnight transit in Shanghai on my way to Saint Petersburg a couple of months ago. It was my brief and first encounter of Shanghai and by that I mean within a vicinity of Pudong Airport, lol. What a shame I didn't have much more time to explore the city like you both did :) xx

@@MattandJulia it looks pretty similar, ‘the bund’(world financial centre where you can walk on a glass floor)eating the best crayfish with the locals, sitting between live walking rats haha…That was an adventure..but in 2012 we had no live internet on our way, so live has changed I guess…
Correction: The word for mother and the word for horse are NOT the same word; they share the same spelling or PinYin, meaning combining sound, but not the same tone, as Chinese is a tonal language. Different tone can mean different things. The word for mother is 妈 and the word for horse is 马. As you can see, these are not the same word. If you put one of these words in a sentence, say "I am going to buy a gift for my mother." Even if you get the tone for 'mother,' wrong, it's unlikely that people are going to assume that you are going to buy a gift for your horse. Hope this makes sense.😊

You were not far from the restaurant section of the Yunnan Road. If you continued for another half mile (south bound), you would find many local restaurants. Enjoy your time in China.
I recommend strolling along the west bank of the Huangpu River all the way to the north bank. It may take a day to walk, but you can rent shared bicycles. Along the way, there are shopping malls, cafes, bars, restaurants, libraries, and beautiful scenery. It's definitely worth it. Have a great trip!

I experienced 37°C in Suzhou (a bit inland from Shanghai) in July of 2010. Very high humidity in summertime in that part of China, but personally I loved it! Most days were cooler though with only 32-34°C in daytime, and that felt amazing for me with the humidity! The day of 37°C and humidity was the one day I was thinking "hmm, a bit warm today" as I walked to a shopping mall close to my accommodation. I didn't have internet on my phone so couldn't check the weather app until I was back "home" on the wifi, and was surprised to see 37°C 😅 Definitely the hottest weather I've experienced, but very much manageable if sipping on a cold milk tea (I absolutely LOVE the Kirin milk tea, Japanese brand but found in China as well, sadly can't find it here in Sweden and I miss it so much!) and enjoying a matcha Frappuccino at Starbucks. Also, do what locals do and drink jasmine tea or chrysanthemum tea with meals, it sounds counterintuitive to drink warm drinks on a hot day, but it really works well, especially chrysanthemum tea has a cooling effect so it's very pleasant to drink on a hot day. Initially I'd have soda in China, but it didn't take long before I just drank tea with many meals when dining out together with the locals I was staying with
I just got back from Shanghai, and I was blown away by the place. It's very peaceful, and incredibly clean, no graffiti or litter anywhere. It feels very very safe, walking around late at night etc. Even though it's a huge mega city, the pace of life feels very chilled and relaxed. On the subway, which is amazingly connected, nobody is power-marching to get to work, there's no barging past people, no rush, it's just easy going. One big surprise was just how friendly and hospitable the people are. I've lived in Sydney, and travelled a lot around the USA, and to be honest, I found the Chinese very similar to the British temperament and humour, much more so than the brash 'in your face' humour of the Aussies and Americans. It's an amazing city, I thoroughly recommend visiting.
At 19:34 , the food is called 油墩子 You2 Dun1 Zi3. shredded radish mixed with carrot and chopped dry shrimp, pressed into a mold and added battter, deep fried with mold until get shape and floats. The name roughly means oil dump.
I spent a week in Shanghai in the early '90's. Absolutely shocking how different it is. But if I could have, I would have stayed too. Glad to see it still has its magic.
So few people around and what you've shown looks like tourists, very strange. Parks mostly empty too. Maybe just the time of year or too hot?? Very interesting ❤❤
Japan is over rated, but China is down rated. I have been to some Asian countries and European countries. Compared with them, Shanghai is really safe, convenient and clean.
Been to both many times, japan is a capture of one point in time of China it seems (tang/song dynasty not sure which), China is like Europe I mean the whole continent. You can’t generalize the entire Europe
Nah, China is underrated, Japan is deserve the hype they get but, KOREA otherwise Overated af kdrama did a good job for them build all the soft power and the hype but... They not that impressive as the picture they try to make (my opinion)

Yes, that street has a lot of Istiklal feel to it, the only thing missing is the simit sellers. Last year I finished reading the Ibis Trilogy, written by Amitav Ghosh, in which he describes in some parts China at the time of the Opium War. How everything has changed now. Shanghai seems like an amazing city!!! And, I always love that you both love to try different foods! It’s such a huge part of travel, IMO. I love learning new languages (currently learning Italian) and I think it’s cool you’re going to learn Mandarin Chinese. What a challenge!
shanghai is a great place. been there in 2011,honestly i cant remember much and i would love to go back there. if you have the time, i would recommend you to explore jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces in northern china. safe trip!
How wonderful. It appears much cleaner than I expected. It seems that the proliferation of electric vehicles has made the city, much, much quieter and cleaner than it was just a few years ago. It’s clear to see the positive effect it’s had on the quality of life there. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to watching future videos from China.
My chinese laoshi(teacher) said that when you are stating a quantity, we use liǎng ge instead of èr when we mean two. Like two apples, we say liǎng gè píngguǒ not èr píngguǒ 22:05

Chinese names are not the same as English names, if a Britishman called John Smith and you ask, what is your name, he will tell you, John. But Chinese surname and name are usually used together, only very closed are called by their names alone. For privacy, stranger don't usually ask each other’s name It's just a cultural difference BTW, Chinese English textbooks that teach us to greet each other in English, be like How are you? fine, thank you. And you? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Aren't there prohibitions on public noise? I saw a video of a cop with a noise meter warn a outside musician he had to keep it down.

I recommend strolling along the west bank of the Huangpu River all the way to the north bank. It may take a day to walk, but you can rent shared bicycles. Along the way, there are shopping malls, cafes, bars, restaurants, libraries, and beautiful scenery. It's definitely worth it. Have a great trip!

I experienced 37°C in Suzhou (a bit inland from Shanghai) in July of 2010. Very high humidity in summertime in that part of China, but personally I loved it! Most days were cooler though with only 32-34°C in daytime, and that felt amazing for me with the humidity! The day of 37°C and humidity was the one day I was thinking "hmm, a bit warm today" as I walked to a shopping mall close to my accommodation. I didn't have internet on my phone so couldn't check the weather app until I was back "home" on the wifi, and was surprised to see 37°C 😅 Definitely the hottest weather I've experienced, but very much manageable if sipping on a cold milk tea (I absolutely LOVE the Kirin milk tea, Japanese brand but found in China as well, sadly can't find it here in Sweden and I miss it so much!) and enjoying a matcha Frappuccino at Starbucks.
Also, do what locals do and drink jasmine tea or chrysanthemum tea with meals, it sounds counterintuitive to drink warm drinks on a hot day, but it really works well, especially chrysanthemum tea has a cooling effect so it's very pleasant to drink on a hot day.
Initially I'd have soda in China, but it didn't take long before I just drank tea with many meals when dining out together with the locals I was staying with
October and April are the best months for visiting Shanghai, the weather is very nice in these two months.
I just got back from Shanghai, and I was blown away by the place. It's very peaceful, and incredibly clean, no graffiti or litter anywhere. It feels very very safe, walking around late at night etc. Even though it's a huge mega city, the pace of life feels very chilled and relaxed. On the subway, which is amazingly connected, nobody is power-marching to get to work, there's no barging past people, no rush, it's just easy going. One big surprise was just how friendly and hospitable the people are. I've lived in Sydney, and travelled a lot around the USA, and to be honest, I found the Chinese very similar to the British temperament and humour, much more so than the brash 'in your face' humour of the Aussies and Americans. It's an amazing city, I thoroughly recommend visiting.

At 19:34 , the food is called 油墩子 You2 Dun1 Zi3. shredded radish mixed with carrot and chopped dry shrimp, pressed into a mold and added battter, deep fried with mold until get shape and floats. The name roughly means oil dump.
I spent a week in Shanghai in the early '90's. Absolutely shocking how different it is. But if I could have, I would have stayed too. Glad to see it still has its magic.

Japan is over rated, but China is down rated. I have been to some Asian countries and European countries. Compared with them, Shanghai is really safe, convenient and clean.
Been to both many times, japan is a capture of one point in time of China it seems (tang/song dynasty not sure which), China is like Europe I mean the whole continent. You can’t generalize the entire Europe

Yes, that street has a lot of Istiklal feel to it, the only thing missing is the simit sellers. Last year I finished reading the Ibis Trilogy, written by Amitav Ghosh, in which he describes in some parts China at the time of the Opium War. How everything has changed now. shanghai is a great place. been there in 2011,honestly i cant remember much and i would love to go back there. if you have the time, i would recommend you to explore jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang provinces in northern china. safe trip!

It means a man who is engaged in work, for example, you can call a male chef or driver ‘shifu’
Chinese names are not the same as English names, if a Britishman called John Smith and you ask, what is your name, he will tell you, John.
But Chinese surname and name are usually used together, only very closed are called by their names alone.
For privacy, stranger don't usually ask each other’s name
