Why Most Anime Video Games Are TERRIBLE

- Anime games are pretty bad. Most of them anyways, from developers not being able to have the time and budget to create something special, to lack of competition. I explain why that is and more importantly, how to improve the state of anime video games.

Budokai 4 gotta save everything
I have absolutely no expectations
Budokai 4 is exactly the game that is prone to be low quality
@@igorferreira2525 why?
@igorferreira2525 quite the opposite if they do it right
Dragon Ball games are mostly good
One piece and naruto with its massive lore filled world has too much potential as a RPG to not be explored to greater lengths I hope one day we get that one anime game to push the industry forward
We need that “Arkham Asylum” type game but for anime games. To make people realize that anime games have massive potential
Exactly, the arkham trio has got to be one of the best game series iv ever played, and there are also other superhero games, Spider man PS4 and miles morales, Guradians of the Galaxy, Injustice 1 and 2, etc. If it works for Superhero games, it should for anime games.
One piece game like dbz kakarot where you can explore and free roam

BLEACH not getting any video game console is criminal at this point...
I used to like the Bleach Shattered Blade for the Wii like 15 years ago, it was entertaining, but lacked polish.
It did have one on the ps3. It was called Bleach Soul Resurection or something like that. I wanted to play it so much as a kid but I never had a ps3
Bleach sucks
@@vincentpistoia9034 yeah okay buddy
@@jantheking7028I played that was one of the best anime game the open world was legit
A Hunter x Hunter video game that lets you create your own hatsu would be insane
I agree you don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for a HXH game
Unfortunately, it won't happen since hunterxhunter has been on hiatus for a very long time and people forgot about it.
@Snake guess the manga can go screw itself then
AND open world, don't know how that would work but I just need it. HxH has a pretty unique worldbuilding that's so good it was one of the things that stuck with me after finishing the anime.
and impossible
Dragon ball FighterZ is extremely good and looks identical to Dragon ball even so that I'll say it sticks the most than all other anime games
To be fair though dbz games are like the only good anime games ☠️
+ it's actually a well-done competitive game that earns its place in the VS fighting games history
@@Explosivewaveofnut fair enough
@@kracko999 agreed
I think jujutsu Kaisen, Baki or fullmetal are the next anime fighters we need.I also think that if bleach got the xenoverse or Kakarot treatment it be a banger.
If bleach got the Xenoverse treatment it might be good or complete dogshit depending on how they do the formats
@@Mommurderer the only thing i see that can work for cac is a freeroam rpg it hands of kakarot but a story built off like xenoverse
I hope they make them anime fighters instead of arena fighters
Jujutsu kaisen fighting game is a dream game for me
Baki arena fighter would be insane with all the fighters throughout the 3 shows 😭
budokai tenkaichi 4 is my last hope for them i was so excited for hinokami chronicles and the game was just mid
Hinokami chronicles was released by Sega not bandai namco
I've come to the realization that I have a very different view of what "anime games" even are compared to most other people here. As far as I'm understanding it, you guys are just talking about Arena Fighters and Musou titles...which are mostly just CC2 and Koei Temco. As well as the occasional cheap mobile gacha cashgrab. And you know what, as far as those go, fair enough.
But then here I am thinking of those licensed games in other genres which are doing pretty well. Only issue is that these either don't get advertised so barely anyone knows they even exist or remain Japan only since their IPs aren't popular enough for the West.
SRPGs have stuff like multiple "Super Robot Taisen" entries, "Full Metal Panic: Fight", etc. Heck, a new one, "Goblin Slayer: Nightmare Feast" was just announced not too long ago which looks like it could be decent.
2D action platformeres have a bunch, like "Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth" and "Overlord: Escape from Nazarick".
Regular action games have stuff like "Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise" by the "Yakuza" devs.
Apparently that "Fairy Tail" RPG from a while back by the "Atelier" devs is pretty good as well.
So on and so on.
And that's just the ones that are actually officially translated in English. There's a ton more if you're willing to deal with moon runes and import.
Granted, I doubt any of these are "Game of the Year" material so they probably aren't good enough for most people. Definitely out here in the West at least where it's all still quite stigmatized. But, I don't know, a fun game is a fun game. A strange perspective, I know.
I like this take. Thanks for commenting
Im here because they are making a JJK game and its copy/paste re-skin of My Heores Justice. Its looks so bad. You can tell its something they just slapped together.
using the nasuverse, it could easily make a dope ahh game with its world building and magic system. i'm still hoping for a souls like game or an arkham around that franchise.
Let's be real Naruto storm 1, 2 and dbfz or budokai 4, 3 or 2 is the best anime games in the history of gaming

Storm peaked with 4

Can I ask isn't persona 5 the only anime game that can reach game of year nominee level
Persona 5 is one of my favorite games I’ve played in a while. It was my personal GOTY of 2016. In terms of the question, Persona is a video game franchise first which used anime as the influence for its style. So when talking about the topic of anime games, it’s mainly about video games based off the manga/anime that originally released like One piece World seeker and CC2s Demon Slayer for example. Hope that helps
Basically yeah,
Most Dragon Ball, Naruto and Yugioh games are good. the bad anime video games are adaptations of bad anime like One Piece, OPM.
One Piece a bad anime? Ok sure lmao
I am planning on one day creating a MHA game somewhat based on the Fantasy AU. Hopefully, I do actually make it and publish it.
Brand recognition is what they bank on. These games rarely go on deep sale. My wife is playing jujitsu kaisen or whatever it’s called and it’s complete trash. No justice to the anime at all.
The one piece roblox game made me realize how fire a one piece MMO would be
I just want Rangiku in a game, come on.
Man of culture I see 😎
She’s in Bleach Brave souls
Nice video, but I think you missed the real problem. Anime video games are terrible because they have to adapt the source material, which may or may not fit into a video game. Most good video games you mentioned are not adaptations, so they are not valid for comparisons.
When it comes to adaptations, it goes case by case. Naruto and Dragon Ball's power systems are simple enough to work just right as video games, which is why we got some bangers from them. The Superhero comics have much less characters compared to anime, and they always have one hero so you can easily do a single player focusing on that character's strength.
But take One Piece on the other hand. All of One Piece's strengths work against making a good video game. Too many characters. Even if we cut 70% down, there are still 10 main characters with vastly different fighting styles, strengths and weaknesses. A world that's too big to flesh out. And a power system that's extremely hard to implement. One because there are too many fighting styles. And two because some fights would just not make sense. Like non-Haki users against Logias, or even Sanji against a woman should just be impossible to win. It's like the Saitama problem in One Punch Man. There are too many hurdles to make a great adaptation.
Injustice figured this out ten years ago, some anime games are better off trying something unique and new and not just the typical arena brawler
We need an anime mmo to save the anime games although everyone wants this anime game developers don’t like making money
Dbfz is good
Even if most anime games are terrible it's still frustrating that so many have never made it out of Japan.
What sucks even more is there are already fans who are willing to take on the work of translating these out dated games
and they will do so for free but then these corporations will shut them down because they are so hell bent on control.
I mean there are games that literally two decades old that are basically just collecting dust.
What’s you opinion on one piece odyssey and the my hero ultra rumble beta if you played it.
If we get “Hand over Attack on titan to Remedy Entertainment and santa monica studio” to be a viral statement on twitter we will get the best anime game to ever exist.
Those two studios specialize exactly in what will make attack on titan the best game ever. Santa monica made god of war and Remedy made Control
Good video sub earned

There’s one best anime game and that’s Persona
best anime games are Dbz games and naruto fr
Imagine a Baki or a Kengan Ashura game similar to Street Fighter 6 where you can go around the world, meet the characters, train and fight with them
Dragonball Budokai 3 was the greatest hit on PS2.
Anime video games is a perfect example of the community just eating whatever they're fed and being happy with the bare minimum
Dbfz was good
@@fazehank5311 Really just that one game huh?
@fazehank5311 It's a 2D fighting game. Most 'anime games' people think of are arena fighters, which are all garbage 'member berries.
My first assumption was always that their priority is to get as much cash from the fans during the first few weeks of sales, the game being a quality one coming second.
You made some really good points and I hope your channel grows.
The main issue with most anime games is that they're licensed by Bandai. So speaking with our wallets won't do much. If it sells too little, they just stop making games for that series; no skin off their teeth. If it sells a lot, then Bandai takes that as a pass for making even more mid games.
And when they do partner with a good developer that actually knows what they are doing, like ArcSys, they see the _massive_ numbers the game rakes in (around $150 million within two months of release) and probably think, "But did we need to put in _that_ much effort to get that much?"
This video was extremely well made when I exited full screen and saw how small the channel was I was genuinely shocked, cant wait to see you grow man you deserve it
I hate how nearly every anime game are fighting games.
That's cause most of those are shounen anime
Arena fighters are overused garbage at this point

Plus with the way demonslayers utilize breathing that could be an interesting mechanic to use as a stamina bar.
the potential with anime games is insane bruh i hope we get out of this era FAST

I honestly thought the first one was better I hated the second one I’m tired of character customization in anime games like why tf did one punch man have one idk anymore
Most of these games are either rushed just for quick sale numbers or just follow the same formula over and over again. These games would've been better if the developers actually dedicated some time to build the worlds, quests and polished the overall gameplay like combat and traversal instead of quick 59$ throw away games that are filled with boring campaign missions and overpriced DLC's. + Most of these games have a massive online component and the player bases die really fast.
Jstars is better than Jump Force and i stand by that statement.
It absolutely is, it was a unique system that with work, could have been even better. Literally didn’t need to take anything away, just add A LOT and no more support only characters. If they can’t fight (like Kagura, Kumagawa, Edajima, SKET-dance, Allen, etc can), then no reason for them to be in the game (looking at you, Light)
I've been playing One piece fighting path recently, it's made in china so not globalised yet...and I think that game really values f2p and almost every feature you mentioned is in that game (yes you can explore all the islands too)
Wondering what'd be your review on that 🙃

@joyconboyz4525 atlus with its weird way of handling a bunch of children even in their marketing of the game. Ann gets it the worst. There's countless videos explaining how the way she was written isn't funny at all because she's a csa victims being fetishized by everyone including her friends. Too many people try to defend that by saying it's legal enough in some places but that doesn't make it any less creepy to drool for a fictional 16 year old abuse victim. It's more of an anime making people accept unormal things problem if anything but its still gross
i appreciate your enthusiasm, but... i am real happy you aren't the front man of Bandai Namco, or any development team/publisher that makes anime games. Cause they'd go straight bankrupt. End of the day, it's just maths.... Anime games don't sell nearly as well as more realistic ones. The only reason why Super Hero games got a massive budget is because those movies did amazing in the box office. Plus, Spiderman just happened to have some good ps2 games too. He's a perfect fit. Avengers got that budget okay'd because they expected it to be succesful since the movies are/were. Anime games have always had smaller budgets and teams in order to barely make a profit. Naruto storm games were the exception that got pretty up there. But just look at the latest announced one. There is literally no hype for it. Naruto is less popular, and Boruto is just trash, so there is not much exciting to do with the IP. That same studio also put a pretty decent budget into Asura's wrath and it was a commercial failure that people enjoyed mostly for the 'cutscenes'. What about original IP? Scarlet Nexus didn't do well. Neither did Gravity Rush, in spite of Sony pushing it. Every single time an anime game got a slightly larger budget to try and reach a large audience, it just ends up failing and more studios go bankrupt. That is why it doesn't happen. The anime fanbase just isn't large enough, sadly. The only exceptions are games that have an established fanbase for it's story/gameplay, and that just HAPPEN to look anime. Think of Zelda and Final Fantasy. But they sure as hell aren't that popular because they are anime art based. So yeah. It's between a rock and a hard place. Chances of a DMC-style Bleach game succeeding are really, really small. Even though it would've been cool
Mans living in an imaginary world where anime videogames have unlimited budget and will sell millions just because they are good, that's not how it works, and if an anime game sells millions most of the time is because one month after release you can find the game at half the price. The only exception is Fighterz because not only is it really good, but dragon ball is huge and EVO gave it a lot of promotion
We need a good jujutsu kaisen game also bandai could make a one piece game simular to sea if thives
Shinobi striker is so good now, it’s just great ah

Anime Mobile Games are better tbh. Gacha games are fun to play, you can grind as much as you want to. There is a tiny game called Bleach Brave Souls that I love alot, it's awesome. You can instantly get new characters and upgrade them. And you can play through it's story, raids, co-op, arena, etc.
I hate demon Slayer
Imagine a dark gritty Souls like breath of the wild inspired Berserk game go around hacking and slashing hordes of demons with upgrades to armour and your prostethic arm like sekkiro
And the combat would be like DmC. Doing crazy combos will give you a compliment, the higher the combo meter the better the compliment

wanna know what's baffling? the fact that theres video game franchises out there, with an anime aesthetic, that have already left a mark a put their name in this respective medium, names like Ace Attourney, Danganronpa, and specially persona/shin megami tensei come to mind when it comes to beloved franchise, that just so happen to have stylistic and narrative choises that share a very similar philosophy, it's sad that there doesn't seem to be anyone competent enough making a game based on the anime and manga IP's with the same level of care, innovation and passion (then again, persona is probably one of the most well known JRPG series, and on the same coin, it's respective anime adaptations are average at best according to the megaten fanbase, or just not even worth touching in the first place)
Yeah, bamco fucking sucks ass and it's the fault of anyone, that keeps buying it anyway, much less pre-ordering.
True like few years ago Bandai made New Gundam Breaker and it was so ass no one bought it and everyone hated it because they tried to changed what worked in Gundam Breaker 3 and changed it for something much worse(also since they have a different studio worked on it instead of the people who made the previous Gundam Breaker games).
And Jump to right now where Bandai announced Gundam Breaker 4 and they have the same studio who made Breaker 3, Brought back mechanics of Gundam Breaker 3 and actually improved upon it.
So the lesson here Vote with your Wallets

Naruto has so much potential for different content. You can have standard fighting moments, jutsu developement, ninja tracking detective events/stories, showing 'lost' history, ect.
An Attack on Titan game with the style and production value of FFXVI would be dope.

onething we have to know before we trash anime games is that those games are set out to do something different than other games. they're at their root a homage and tribute to the original source material. a retelling and imagining of the original story. just look at how storm franchise handled that aspect and you will get the point.
while big corpos will always do the big corpo shit. the eastern developers are more about preserving a tradition. they care about catering and nurturing fandoms. ever wandered why those anime games while being mediocre they still sell and not generate alot of backlash to a point of causing a big change in the scene? that's why. they're simply aren't at odds with their fandoms and everyone is happy they get to play their fav anime game.
while tradition might feel a burden on progress for a westerner, but we can guarantee that eastern gamers enjoy healthier relations with their franchises and the people behind it in a world were being out of touch and marginalizing your fans has become the norm of western devs. to sometimes straight out insulting and humiliating their customers. it is pathetic.
the western made games you mentioned are the exception. not the norm. those batman games. and the other couple dc/marvel good games? alongside hogwarts and some other rpg fantasy games? yeah. they broke the mold. you would be hard pressed to find a western made franchise that is as old as its eastern counterpart like street fighter, dmc, resident evil, final fantasy, and most other anime franchises, and doesnt go up in flames every couple of years or end up in a very sorry state. westerners (and americans in particular) are too acustomed to rapid change for their own good sake.

Thank the lord I'm not a Anime Fanboy.
My critique of this video though is that there is no constructive criticism. Like, as an outsider, why are all the anime games crap? I've got no clue at all and would like to have one.
Roblox Devs preparing to create the most original anime games on 2015-2020 for the community cuz the original games are just mostly garbage: 😎🍷
Have not yet watched the video but let me take a guess.
Is it simply because they are adaptations of a source material?
I have this theory that regardless of medium or whatever, most adaptations of any source material can't be any good because the story and stuff from the source material is not designed to work in other forms it gets adaptations into.
The story of a book for example cannot be properly translated into a movie, video game, anime, or whatever else.
Similarly the story and stuff from a video game is not designed in such a way that it can work as a book, especially if it's an open world game with a lot of the lore and world building coming from optional side-quests.
You cannot turn Skyrim into a movie and expect it to work.
Technically there are exceptions like when the adaptation intentionally tells it's own original story but set in the same universe as it's source material but other than that.....
And then you have jojo's heritage for the future who stood the test of time and is being played even to this day and has a diehard community
lol yes its over 20 years old and kicks as like street fighter franchise
It’s the fact that all they make are 3d Fighting games instead of something like an open world rpg like could you imagine a custom story open world Naruto, one piece, black clover or demon slayer game obviously there’s more
