  • Learn How to Convert a Chest Freezer into an Ice Bath.
It's a fairly easy process with minimal steps required. Please note that some chest freezers are more water tight than others, but, they are not designed to actually hold water, so you will need to do a little work to prep it.
WARNING: ALWAYS UNPLUG THE CHEST FREEZER BEFORE GETTING IN IT! And never go in without someone around for safety.
Step 1: Purchase a Chest Freezer and supplies.
Step 2: Clean the inside of the unit.
Step 3: Seal all of the seams with the silicone listed below and let it dry for the time listed on the label. I let mine seal for 48 hours.
Step 4: Fill it with water.
Step 5: Turn it on to the coldest setting. Mine takes about 36 hours to get to temp. You can speed the process up by adding ice, but I never have.
Step 6: Enjoy your new Ice Bath. I sit in mine daily for roughly 10 minutes at a time hours after training.
Step 7: Check temp daily and turn on as needed to keep it cold. Usually run mine a few hours every other day.
Other Important Notes/TIps: For me I had seems running the perimeters of all the walls and the floor and around the top. Also, in this video I hadn't sealed the top seam where the plastic meets the metal yet, but I have since. I highly recommend that as well.
The silicone I used is listed below and you get a good shot of it in the video too, I bought it at Lowes, but you can find everything on Amazon as well. The aquarium pump did not come with a hose, so I bought that from Lowes as well.
To keep it clean, I always shower before using and use a clean bathing suit/shorts. I am the only one that uses mine so on the 1st of every month I drain it and clean it. I do not use any chemicals in the water, I know others do but it is just me that uses it and I am not a dirt ball. As long as you are clean and the clothes are clean you get in with, you shouldn't have an issue cleaning it monthly.

Do you have a video with the chest freezer full of water and using it? I wonder how it would do on my porch in the Florida heat if one I got it cold enough how long would I have to run it for. I am thinking I could set a timer to turn it on at like 4 am and get in it after my run around 8 am.

Hey Sean, actually I just filmed one the other day because someone else asked as well. Got to edit it together, its on my short list of things to get done this week so hopefully have it uploaded before the weekend. Tough to say on one sitting outside in the Florida heat and humidity, might have to run more frequently to hold temp, but in the grand scheme cost wouldn't really be an issue because it's really no different than a refrigerator running.

But I sit in it daily for 10 minutes hours after training, I fill it up from my sink with that same hose I use to drain in. I use to use a big garbage can and my shower faucet. I drain it with the pump into my sink monthly and clean it and refill it. I do unplug it before using. The brand of pump and type of tubing is listed in the description. Got the pump off amazon and tubing from Lowes. Hope this clears some things up for you. I figured a lot of the draining and filling was self explanatory but I will make a follow-up video demonstrating them.

    • @GPSHumanPerformanceUSA

Hey Bella, I drain and clean it once a month, usually on the 1st. I’ve stretched it to six weeks a few times because of traveling and being out of town. Going to film how I do that and post it because others have requested to see how I drain and fill. No need to buy ice, it gets plenty cold. Initially upon filling it I have to leave it on for 24 hrs or so to get it cold because the water coming out of the tap here can be 65+°F. Then I usually only need to have it on a few hours a day to keep it cold.

You're the only one I've seen so far that uses such a setup indoors (as opposed to a garage or balcony). I would love to do that too, but I am worried that, getting in and out of the freezer always causes a lot of water to splash around and this depending on one's flooring would cause problems. What is your experience with this?

Fair question, with a little bit of caution and not being in a race to get in and out of it, I have had zero issues with spillage. I have a big towel that I fold up on the ground and step out on to, then towel off fast with another towel. With the experience of doing this now for over 4 years I'm fully confident you can have one of these set-up on carpet without issue. But if you want to cannonball into it, then a garage or balcony would be best haha.

My freezer gets hot on the outside as well, its something that they all do as part of the process of bringing the inside temperature down to "freezing". If you were just using it as an actual freezer it wouldn't need to work as hard once its at temp, but because it has water in it, it has to work harder, thus creating more heat by trying to cool the water. Thank you so much for a common sense video that doesn’t make this all feel impossible. I understand people wanting to do things perfectly, but that’s a little too much for the average person.
Question: I almost immediately got little tiny holes throughout the metal interior. Hard to say if they were already there or just weaknesses exposed by water pressure. I have seen someone else discuss this, but their solution was to coat the interior with Raptor truck bed liner (expensive!).
Have you had to deal with this, and if so, did you find a good solution?
I used a similar caulk, but the one that is made for bathtubs (stronger and more flexible), and I was thinking about just using that to fill the holes.

So, I hate to bug you with another question, but did you use the Flex Seal just for the holes, or to coat the entire surface? I’m considering doing the latter - just getting the Flex Seal that you can roll/brush on, and cover the whole interior. That way, it’s done, and the interior should be really well sealed.
Can you think of any issues with that? Would that rubberized finish be weird to have for the whole interior (for comfort, cleaning, etc.)?
      Again, thanks so much!
