I'll always shill for Harvestella. The game was such a surprise. The story is amazing and very deep and surprisingly adult, the characters are loveable and well-written, the music is top notch, and the art style is super cozy. I usually hate life-sims and farm-sims, but this game made me love it all.

Awesome list of games and even better when they're all at a discount! This made me realize how many games I own that I've either started but never finished or not played at all yet! The only games in the list that I don't own yet are MH Rise and Undernauts (which I've added in my wishlist last time you've talked about it). I have both Dusk Diver games, and I even pre-ordered the 2nd one based on your recommendation back then, so you did your job as the Unofficial Ambassador to the West of the Dusk Diver franchise lol! Great video and keep up the good work!

Trials of Mana and Rune Factory 4 are two excellent pickups. ToM is a great, quick RPG (~20 hours a playthrough), and RF4 just passes the time so easily. Maglam Lord is still one I’ve been looking out for, but is always just a bit above the price I wanna pay. Now, though, it might be a good time to try to get it 🤔.

    Thanks for the video!
I would say Harvestella is a good game and a hidden gem if you were curious about easing into a life sim games. It's more of an RPG where you do some light life sim farming to equip yourself up for dungeon diving. (Making crops to earn money and create food/juices for healing in combat). It has a good story with lots of interesting twists and simple combat that is easy to learn.
Rune Factory would be a deeper dive since it's more life sim and the combat is less focused. Story of Seasons would be the full-on life sim since it has no combat.

Trails of Mana was a blast, did multiple playthroughs for that perfect end game party in my book.
Monster Hunter Stories 2 is one of my favorites on the switch and I never feel like it gets the love it deserves. Goes on sale down to 20-25USD for a physical.
Finishing up DQ11 now and Cyberslueth Complete Edition is probably upnext after scoring it for 15USD (physical). Love these vidoes by the way, I love physical and I love gaming on a budget, looking at Deku deals, my collection has an average discount of ~66%. That does include a handful of digital titles that has had banger sale prices, but I always priorites physical. Never be ashamed to stick to a budget!

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin was a sleeper hit for me because I DON'T like farming sims. But the way harvesting rice fed back into the combat and exploration and the fact you can make it as easy or hard you want to made it really enjoyable.
The Trials of Mana remake is my favorite mana game, I had played a fan translated version of the original. I just love the fact you have different paths for upgrading their classes. It also helps that Reisz is super cute.
I had a lot of fun with Dusk Diver and Maglam Lord is on my wishlist on PSN.

@@marlowemichaelson1366 The trick to not getting stressed out by the clock in farming games is to throw efficiency out the window. Instead of farming, talking to npcs, mining and then fishing all in one day, just pick 1-2 activity and then sleep. You'll find that advancing the days quickly is more reliable and fun since things progress faster.

That being said, I have to agree it’s a great value for someone looking for a new different JRPG. I’ve heard nothing but great things about Sakuna. One I definitely wanna check out. Cybersleuth is another I’ve been wanting to check out! I see it at GameStop and my local gamestore everytime I go in but I keep passing it by. I gotta pull the trigger. DUSK DIVER!!! Astria Ascending is a great game. But one major thing that I wanted to point out that... lessened my experience for this game is the Skill Tree. You can't unlock the entire skill tree in the main game. It is only accessible post game and it sucks. I was constantly looking at my skill tree as I progress thinking when I can have access to that one part of the skill tree that is literally viewable right from the start.
I beat the game and didn't have access to it. And no I didn't miss something, you really can only unlock it post-game. If it was hidden and after you got to post game then it showed up, then that would have been a great surprise. But being viewable and constantly taunting you throughout the entire game was a terrible decision by the dev.
Still a good game, and it may end up as someone's favorite so as long as it doesn't affect you or you read this comment beforehand.

I'm gonna say that I've never been into farm-sim games until I was gifted Harvestella and even though I've still not yet finished it I love taht game really much it's not farm-sim to the extreme kinda simple which is something I like (in the end of the day I want to play a game to relax, unwind, etc. so the rather simplimistic of the game is much appreciated for me) and I must say it is relaxing the game is beautiful and I still sunked 60 hours in and still not finished it yet I recommend it if it's on sale it's beautiful, it's got a really good soundtrack you can have up to 3 class and switch almost on the fly during combats, not too complicated, not too simple too I sunk at least 45 to 60 minutes for a in-game day I almost like more the farm-sim elements than the rest of the game, but it's got a beautiful story to it
If you're looking for a game to unwind when you play a hardcore souls game or horror game and you can't go to sleep without alterning to something more colorful and calming I recommend to play this game on the side too

Sorry for a2nd comment, but my other was long enough.
I think we've gone past "JRPG" referring to just Japan made games because Chinese and South Korean developers have adopted that style as well. And they've been starting to release more games outside their countries and being recognized for it.
Until the last few South Korea has been mostly known for MMOs and Magna Carta Tears of Blood on PS2 is the first time I am aware of one of those non mmo games being published in English. I miss the old Atlus.

  • @charlesedwinbooks

As a self proclaimed Cozy JRPG Farmer, let me try to convince you more to dive into these hybrid genres.
It sounds like you're big into just JRPGs like I was when I was younger. I'm talking specifically playing JRPG style games like Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Shadow Hearts, Legend of Legaia, Digimon 2 and 3, Radiata Stories, etc.
If you're wanting to enjoy games that are HEAVY JRPG where you can get your toes wet for farm sim/romancing jump into:
    Rune Factory 3 or 4
Maybe even start with 5 if you've never really played. I personally think 5 is the weakest of that trio, but, if you've never touched it before it could be a good step 1!
After that I'd recommend Harvestella. I know you said you didn't really try it, but Harvestella was advertised really weird. They heavily push the farm sim part of that game as it being a massive center point. But really its probably 87% JRPG and then farm sim. The Story is huge and well planned out. Characters are fantastic, the region stories and characters archs are well written and enjoyable. The part where I believe people get weirded out is that fact it simply takes the best of farm sim and best of jrpg and gives you simple systems for both. So no die hard fan is going to be satisfied as its job system isn't deep enough for the jrpg fan, but the lack of customization and romancing will bother the average farm sim fan too. But really it is a perfectly balanced dish of the jrpg/farm sim genres. I cannot recommend it enough. Just try it until at least the end of Chapter 2, but if you can, until the end of Chapter 3.
Also if you prefer more story to farm try out "My Time at Portia". Their game is more craft sim than farm, but combat, dungeon diving, and unique original story telling and community building is really focused in this title.

Honestly the gameplay of Harvestella is really good. Theres just quite a few odd design choices here and there. I also dont care much for androgynous character designs but this MC was relatively good.
As for Cyber Sleuth, me and a whole bunch of Digimon fans have been singing its praises since it came out on vita. We got a sequel with Hackers Memory but i still want more of that style of Digimon.

Rune Factory has been my favorite series since I bought the first game on a whim while it was new. I kind of just love those "grind up life skills" games that happen to be in a RPG setting, only games that hit the same vibes to me are the MMOs Runescape and Mabinogi. It's nice to just have a singleplayer experience for it, and I certainly wouldn't complain about the opportunity to slide in some romance. After 4, the team that made the games disbanded and we thought the series was gone forever, and nobody really wanted to fill in that niche in the same way RF did. Eventually, the team got back together under a new company or something, and we surprisingly got a 5th release... and everyone was disappointed by it.
To this day, I think the first is the best game in the series. It's an unpopular opinion in the fandom, but I just think the dungeon design in every other game was worse, and every other main-line game leaned on a gimmick to stand out. Now that we've had a remaster of 4 and 3 (the fan favorites), I'd love to see 1 get done as well, with modernized controls, a more fleshed out equipment pool, and the conversation pool for NPCs being expanded to the levels we see in 4.

Heard from a few RUclips reviews of Harvestella, apparently no matter which gender you pick, the feminine or effeminate looking one is the default model. *If* that's true, other than some mechanics, not my choice.

How well does Nier Automata actually run on switch? I saw that it was a lot cheaper than steam (minus sales periods) but games on the switch vary wildly for optimization (looking at you pokemon and rune factory 5) to the point where sometimes i actually hit sub 12fps. Not as much of a problem for turn based games, but action based ones become almost unbearable at that rate

Highly recommend diving into harvestella even if the gameplay looks meh. The farming sim aspect is bad compared to other farm sims. The combat is bad compared to other action RPGs. But the story GOES SO HARD. It's hard to say how good the story is without spoiling it so just trust me bro. It's also cool that you can equip 3 classes at the same time and swap between any of them in combat to make your own playstyle and you unlock new classes all the time, there are a lot of them.

Some notes to take into consideration:
    .
    -Y's series.
As a story-driven player, I must say most Y's games are on the weaker side. But man the gameplay is fire and the music boost the experience pretty hard. Again my only complain is the story.
    .
Nier Automata: is a must buy.
    .
    Rune Factory games:
It has simple but enjoyable combat, farming and ranching are the main goal with a bit of dating sim, just like Harvest Moon. No cons except some characters may be a bit bland.
    .
SMT Nocturne: again as a story-driven player, and a Persona enjoyer, Megaten titles are, in comparison, depressing. Nocturne was my first experience where as the story progress only makes me hope for things to get better.
    It does not.
Heck, after many tries all endings felt like bad endings and made me search online if I was taking the wrong decisions somewhere but nope, that's all we get.
    .
    Monster Hunter:
The 5 titles I've played have been weak on the story part. The mechanics are good but honestly, I enjoyed Toukiden more.

I'm a big story-driven player as well, and I was thinking about starting up Ys 8 since fans say it has the best story. If you played that one, in your opinion, is the story very weak as well? Also, since you are like me and if you haven't already, I would recommend 13 Sentinels or Final Fantasy Tactics/War of Lions. Since those games have been some of the top ten best story-driven games I have ever played.

    • @Archetype_Angel

@@Synanova Yes. The story felt a bit generic tbh. I remember the gameplay, but after many years since I last finished it, I can tell you that it left no impact on me since I really don't remember Y's 8 story at all.
      .
13 sentinels is on my list as a Vanillaware title, and on that note, I hope you have the chance to play both Muramasa and Odin Sphere, those are among my top 10 of all time.

@AngelLozano447 I know what you mean. I had the same feeling about a game called Trails in the Sky, SC. Really nothing memorable, but still had dope dialogue and somewhat of an intriguing story, but overall very underwhelming compared to the first. I feel people who hype the Trails series are in the same vein as this generation and rave about all these mediocre story-driven games nowadays. A lot of these games just ain't it. I believe I've been spoiled after playing Nier Automata, 13 Sen, FFT, Xenosaga, Yakuza 0, and a few others. It may seem like a lot, but it's a dime a dozen when you take 20 years or more of gaming history. Also, I have never heard of Muramasa but will put it on my list to play since you recommended it. As far as Odin Sphere, I bought it for my PS5, but I just haven't gotten around to playing it. Lastly, I also recommend a game named Lisa; top ten for sure. 💯

@@Synanova well, I see you're a person of culture as well!
After hearing those titles it's no wonder you're not easily impressed, they're not made like the rest.
      .
In my case, besides the one you mentioned some staples were Metal Gear Solid 3, Persona 5 Royal, Final Fantasy X and Ar Tonelico 1 & 2 which it has some fanservice since it's from Gust, but if you can bear with it, the story is great. Undertale was quite the experience too if you go in blind.
      .
Try Odin Sphere, the Leifthrasir version if possible.
I guarantee you won't regret it.

@@Archetype_Angel Absolutely! And yes, you named a few that are on my list as well. MGS3, FF10, and P5 are all amazing games. However, P4 dropped the ball for me heavily once I got through that letdown. Such lost potential due to silly villain reasoning and nonsensical plot twists and plot connections that a grade schooler could do better. Also, I never heard of Ar Tonelico; where would you rank it from a top 20 list? And "fan service" is one of the banes of the media for me. I don't like it either in my games or anime since it almost always foreshadows the story. As if writers are more concerned with showing boobies than telling a great story. However, I'll take your word and update the list of games I have to play by putting that one there to check out. And yes, I keep forgetting to play Undertale with my laundry list of games. Lol And yes, Odin Sphere will soon be up next.

lot of things is new which is made to accomodate a more casual new gen hunter even more than what world already did to the point it doesnt feel like being a 'hunter' anymore. no more seeking track, no moretracking monster with paintball, no more utilizing environment and choosing preferable battleground to fight, no more risks of being unable to runaway when got hit of monster. less tactical hunt, more frenzy fight, your hunter is superhuman so play the game like DMC. monster brawler rise is a more apt name for it.
