  • Today I'm diving into guitar tone nerddom and exploring some semi famous maybe not so famous buzzwords that get kicked around on social media, forums, and summer festival jam sessions. I think together we can really find a way to nail down what they truly mean so that all guitarists can speak confidently when describing tonal anomalies. In the comments let me know what your favorite buzzword was and what you think about Weezer's Everything Will Be Alright In The End!

    "Tone" is a misnomer itself, a four-letter substitute for "hi-frequency roll-off" so it fits on a knob.
    The correct term is *TIMBRE*. /

    • @BibleStorm
      @BibleStorm 4 года назад +4

      You know the terms are synonymous in this context, right? Language evolves. You talk to an (electric) guitarist about tone, everybody knows you mean timbre. You use the word "tone" in a music theory context, you know that refers to a specific note.

    Also want to say something about your great customer service. Few years ago around 2011/2012 I was living in Kansas had a Ibanez Tubescreamer I decided to get modded, first thought was Keeley in Oklahoma since at that time I didn’t know JHS was in Kansas. Contacted Keeley and was told they would mod my Tubescreamer but was recommended by them to contact you. Something about you were Kansas based so no or less shipping cost plus since you were two hours away in Kansas City I wouldn’t have to wait as long to get it back. Contacted JHS the as told you’d mod it and send it. I did, got the mod I wanted and my Tubescreamer sounded the way I wanted it to. Great customer service by both you and Keeley

    OMG Bro you are such the perfect combination of Musician / Soundman / Technician / Tech Nerd - You're freakin' killing me! I thought your definitions are pretty spot on, You're right about how Sustain is sort of a bastardized term in the sense of being used kind of broadly but when I think of the word sustain in the context of guitars that word means a Gibson Les Paul's magnificent ability to linger longer and louder than any other ax in the forest just all by itself and when amplified that equates to "Tone of the Gods" (See Zakk Wylde for Reference). Transparent is a word close to my heart - in my mind it's when the sound is so true to the original it sounds like the PA isn't even there; it's just "The sound, but Bigger" - most Audio Cats are not skilled enough with their EQ cuts to achieve transparency but in my mind that's how you identify the very best audio engineers - their mixes are sonically transparent and uncolored by the myriad of equipment and connections in the signal chain. Loved this video!. - MM in Denver CO

    So I'm a weirdo. I like having a preamp in my guitar, but I don't play metal. Other guys known to do this are David Gilmour, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, and Jerry Garcia. All of whom have or had EMG SPC, Fender MDX, or a "Tiger preamp" respectively in their guitars. One thing people in the guitar world never talk about is that True Bypass works better for guitars with batteries. I had to figure this out the hard way. Because if you have an active preamp in your guitar, then the signal coming out of your guitar is already buffered by that preamp. So hitting another buffer gets to be a bit much. If you're playing low gain and want to keep those dynamics, you want to run that active system into True Bypass pedals (preferably with the pedals running at 18v to compensate for the preamp in your guitar).

    I believe "haunting mids" this is the dumblest term I ever heard, but I also think talking about fuzzwords isn't sustainable. Maybe you misheard that and they meant "hunting mitts", which is the main reason why highs are not smooth when the mitts are stiff and not there where you want them while fretting. resulting in too complex harmonics. However, getting super nerdy about same old same old transistors bending waveforms can be way more exiting than just shutting up and playing yer guitar for the walls around you. :)
