    In some way, as Italians, we are too familiar with such beautiful places that we take them for granted. I used to go to the Dolomites for holiday since when I was child, at that time I did not rally realised their beauty, they just were “the mountains “. Only after years spent in other places, when I came back as adult, I really saw what incredible and touching beauty I had in front of me. I think the heaven must be like this.

    I was there for two weeks a decade ago and I cried when I left. I've loved many places I've visited everywhere in the world, but when I left the Dolomites it was as if I was leaving a little bit of my heart there and I felt a sort of longing as I moved further away. I believe places have energies that affect us individually in different ways - there was clearly something in the Dolomites that touched something deep within me.

    It is so refreshingly cute to see you get emotional for THIS. I understand you: I am an Italian who chose to live and work abroad, but now, over 60, I decided to come back. Despite its many defects, Italy is irreplaceable in an Italian heart.
    I am sorry that you missed Cortina, its valley, with the Tofane on one side, and the Cristallo and Antelao on the other, is a spectacle to behold - in no other place, IMO, the rock that gives the Dolomites their name has a more stunning colour.
    Welcome to Italy and welcome to Veneto! Please keep sending us these beautiful mementos of your trips!

    I recommend you read - The White War: Life and Death on the Italian Front 1915-1919 by Mark Thompson. It tells the history of the war that was fought in the dolomites and that rarely gets a mention in the Anglo sphere history of World War 1. This front was more brutal even than the Western Front as the conditions the soldiers fought and died in were extreme. Many Italian towns have a Via Veneto, named after the battle of Vittorio Veneto where the Austrians and Germans were finally defeated. Fellini’s most famous film, La Dolce Vita, is centred around Via Veneto in Rome.

      Sorry. Veneto is more commonly the region around Venice. Same word is often used as an adjective meaning from Veneto, the region. Via Veneto in Rome is named after the region.
      Cheers.

      So true. Not to mention that the Italian army won that war against the Austro-Hungarians without any significant help from British or American soldiers, apart from a few small contingents of volunteers employed in Red Cross missions (as can also be seen in Hemingway's famous novel A Farewell to Arms).

      Was just thinking about this and going to comment. Italian soldiers lifted a 1 1/2 ton cannon from the bottom to the very peak that helped change the tide of war in their favor, considered one of the most amazing feats of both world wars. Some called that front the most difficult of WWI. Just hiking a few days most people can't take the cold or climbing any more. Imagine them fighting battles non stop for 3 years, an incredible feat that cost hundreds of thousands of lives. And the Allies then refused to honor their commitment to Italy in territory gains which later led to Italy siding with Germany in WWII.

    I''ve been there many times and I'm proud to be italian, a beautiful country that has also incredible sea and beach (eg. Sardinia and Puglia), hills (Tuscany), medieval countries (Umbria) and many other beautiful places and food. For Dolomites I can suggest Val di Fassa, because it has a large number of hotels and people consider themselves italian compared to Val Gardena, in which most of they consider themselves German.

    • @nigelandsueadventures
      @nigelandsueadventures  22 дня назад

      Interesting you mention Val Di Fassa, as a mate of mine goes there often for either ski holidays in the winter and MTB riding/hiking in the summer

    • @aled5411
      @aled5411 22 дня назад

      @@nigelandsueadventures There are three valley very beautiful there adjacent one each other: Val di Fassa, Val Gardena and Val Badia, but the first has more hotels so it's "cheaper". Landscapes are incredible. I've visited other dolomities beautiful places like Madonna di Campiglio, San Martino di Castrozza, very beautiful, but they are not beautiful like Val di Fassa and Val Gardena (I haven't been in Val Badia). I've never been in winter, only in summer, july exactly.

    Sono i nostri posti del cuore, quelli che visitiamo quasi tutti gli anni...non posso negare che, dopo centinaia di km passati sui sentieri delle Dolomiti, alla vista delle 3 cime ho pianto pure io (forse non ero preparato alla magnificenza "improvvisa" arrivando dal Paterno)
    E' qualcosa di indescrivibile, da provare almeno una volta nella vita...il top lo si raggiunge però, arrivandoci a piedi (con fatica) partendo dalla Val Fiscalina e passando dai rifugi Zsigmondy-Comici e Pian di Cengia, poi costeggiando il Monte Paterno, giro assolutamente incredibile!❤(unica pecca è che ci si perde i Cadini di Misurina)
