Datuk Lee Chong Wei DB, DCSM, PJN, DSPN, AMN, JP, PhD(SptsSc) (h.c.) (Chinese: 李宗偉; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Lí Chong-úi; born 21 October 1982) is a Malaysian former professional badminton player. As a singles player, Lee was ranked first worldwide for 349 weeks, including a 199-week streak from 21 August 2008 to 14 June 2012.[1][2] He is the fifth Malaysian player after Foo Kok Keong, Rashid Sidek, Roslin Hashim and Wong Choong Hann to achieve such a ranking (since official rankings were first kept in the 1980s), and is the only Malaysian shuttler who has held the number one ranking for more than a year.
Viktor Axelsen (born 4 January 1994) is a Danish badminton player who is the current number one ranked men's singles player in the world.[2] He is a two-time World Champion and reigning Olympic Champion, having won at the 2020 Olympics.[3]
He won the 2010 World Junior Championships, beating South Korea's Kang Ji-wook in the final to become the first ever European singles player to hold the title.[4] Axelsen is a three-time European champion, having won the title in 2016, 2018 and 2022.[5]

@@reily-bc3uh even at 35, on his good days, I think LCW could beat any player of any era, although barring Lin Dan if he is also having a good day. But overall, old age and the building up of all the injuries make him have more bad days than the younger players, so overall, even now, Kento Momota still edges out in terms of h2h record against Axelsen, even though, in my opinion, Momota was not as good a player as Lee Chong Wei. I find that whenever Lee Chong Wei loses one-sidedly, people tend to talk about it over and over, like his big loss against Wei Nan, and Axelsen, as if "See? LCW is a fraud all along". As a badminton fan (I don't care about nationality, that's beneath sports in my view, I also don't personally know any of the top players), I always feel a little itchy when people don't recognize that LCW might have possibly achieved the highest level of badminton. It's a tragedy for me that such a great athlete gets as much disrespects from fans as he does.

Axelson was helpless here..The biggest difference is LCW's ultra strong defense which basically tarnished any confidence of axelson to play attacking games by using his smash...

@@zachmerryweather805 Lin Dan has the best shot quality of all MS players, I've seen. May sounds not too significant, but with the fact that prime LD was a fast, consistent and powerful player, it makes a lot of differences to add shot quality to it. Plus LD was also one of the best readers of the game too.

LCY should be appointed as national Coach because he had a great game during his times. He can pass his experience as player under few coaches. With this combination, no doubt he can produce many talented players.
Axelsen improved a lot since then, but especially his defence looked way more nervous here in the 1st set.

Not to disrespect new players but Chong Wei moved so fast. Too fast. You see current faces like Naraoka and they seem to move a bit more sluggishly and unstable don't they. But LCW, man, it's seamless, there's no redundancy, it's amazing.
Even peak momota don't look this fast. Those dives are insane. Hard to believe such a player lost to Lin Dan 70% of the time.

I think LCW & CL were about the same level overall. H2H between the two also about the same. CL more towards impenetrable defense while LCW more on attacking. However, CL won whenever it mattered the most (WC & Olympics).
@@aliffitri Yes, many people underrate Chen Long. For me, Dato' Lee Chong Wei, Lin Dan and Chen Long were the legends during their time playing against another. And if I'm not mistaken, it was Dato' LCW who says playing against Chen Long is like playing against a brick wall. He will simply return everything.
