On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 8-6-20.
We're looking at a 1954 Mercury Monterey Convertible in Raven Black Paint. The car comes with the factory 256 CI V8 engine.
The car's Owner is Ken Nagel. Ken’s had this car since 2007. He shares his 1st car was a 1954 Mercury so he really has a connection to them. This one looks “showroom” new.
If you're interested in seeing this car in Ken's collection, see this link.

What an absolutely beautiful Mercury! The red piping on the cloth top is a nice touch. Don’t think I’ve ever seen any top at all with piping, convertible or otherwise. And I love the way the chrome trim catches the light as you’re spanning the profile. Thanks Lou & Ken for a great presentation.

@@loucostabile: Born in 1954, it is interesting to see what was brand new that year. My first car at age 16 was a ‘65 Impala SS, but my next car was and still is my favorite... ‘67 Mercury Cougar XR7. Lime Green with the black vinyl top. It only had the 289 2V but is was plenty for the size and weight. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a lemon. I went through three water pumps in two years and it stranded me twice on trips from overheating. But I’d take it back in a heartbeat! Cheers, John from Ohio

Hi, Lou! Yep, Ken's done it again and brought out a real stunner! The details on this one are really exquisite! The jazzy door panels, the "jewelry", the aircraft-like dash, everything. Back in the Fifties, Lincoln-Mercury was the prime sponsor of the Ed Sullivan Show, and I think he would be absolutely thrilled to see this one today. In a commercial he did for the 1954 Mercury, he said the optional four-way power seat was his favorite feature.
BTW, I just found the website on Ken's vast collection of cars and farm equipment. It will take me quite a while to read all the details! As always these virtual rides are a treat, but I think the real treat would be seeing all of Ken's cars in the metal! Take care and ILL CYA in the next one!

Beautiful car. My dad bought a new 1953 and about a week later was outran terribly by a new 1954. It was at the end of the year and the 54s were already at the dealerships with their overhead valves. Any way as I said a week after buying the 53 a man in a 54 outran him going from Houston Tx to Corpus Christi Tx . As soon as my dad got home from his trip he went to the dealer and bought a beautiful 54 two door hard top red and black which he kept for several years. It was a great car.

Another great car from Ken. I would like to see a My Car Story of Ken's garage/garages showing all the cars together. That would be very entertaining. From what I have seen to date on Ken's cars I can not imagine that he could have a favorite in the group. For people who did not remember the 1950s cars new and remember them just old, faded, rusty and often just plain Jane versions, Kens cars (representing many manufacturers) are the best in showing how special those cars really were when they were new. Thanks again.

There's nothing left to comment on as all your viewers have almost covered it all Lou. One thing though is the tail lights and the art deco influences in the styling bearing in mind that era was still being influenced by that period of straight and uniform lines. The jet fighter heater controls...wow! The engine compartment also looked sensational and that 50's green...sweet.

The owner doesn't seem to think there's much to talk about regarding the engine, but 1954 was the first year of the new Y-block design V8. In 1953 Mercury was still using a flathead design V8 that only produced 125 hp.

You've probably seen the old Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz movie entitled "The Long Long Trailer" that featured a yellow 1953 Monterey convertible. Cool old movie. You will notice that for the mountain driving sequence MGM substituted a Lincoln Capri with its heavier engine for the Monterey which overheated pulling the 40 foot trailer during filming

lou asked if there was anything special about the engine and the owner said no,what??? it was a brand new ohv engine for mercury and for that year. it had exactly the same displacement albeit differently by the bore and stroke changing places but ended both having 255 .4 -256 in disc. but horsepower jumped to 161 from 125 a big deal in 1955.

Now multiply it by four or five times and that's probably the actual number it cost.
