I have a question Milton fire & rescue, do people have a choice to stop if they want to help a victim of an accident or just drive away to let medical personal help because i lost two friends of mine on 7/10/15, wish i was there to help
My country has a law that requires you to help according to your possibilities, if you can do so without unreasonably endangering yourself. Failure to do so can result in a fine or even a jail sentence. Even so, many people can't be bothered, and it is pretty rare that someone gets charged.
Ok, in response to all the crazy comments. Good lord people, calm down. None of you was on this call so stop with the wondering. We were dispatched on the original call of a child that had gone missing outside. While responding to this call, I was the lead unit, this accident happened. It is required by our policy and Kentucky law that we stop and render aid until another unit that is better able to handle the situation arrives. They cancel us on the other run anyway after I get out of the car.
@sabethafiredept The call we were enroute to was a small child that had gone missing in the woods outside of his house. They found him about 2 seconds after this wreck happened.
Ok. Here is a scenario from a firefighters perspective. I get two calls and both are for structure fires. One has an entrapment and one doesnt. The one with no entrapments is about 2 miles away and the one with the entrapment is about 3/4 a mile away and was reported after the structure fire with entrapments was. So just because it was reported first, I am gonna pass the house with an entrapment and let the victim die? I dont think so.
@bigredchevytruck That depends on what state you are from. MN is a duty to act state so you are required by law to render aide or you can lose your license and possibly face civil and criminal charges.
@wmfdshrek19 If you are in a marked vehicle, a fire vehicle or an Ambulance, yes, you have to stop. But if you are driving in your personal vehicle, you can choose not to stop. I always do anyway but when I took my CORE 13 class a year ago, I was told that you have a duty to act as a professional rescuer. However, if you are in your own vehicle, you are not required to stop.
I've never had it happen to me while responding to the building but I've been the first on scene to an accident when I was just driving home from work. As a professional rescuer, especially in a marked vehicle, you cannot just drive by an accident, even if it looks minor, you are REQUIRED to stop. Jason, I know you know that, I'm just saying that for everyone else that was wondering if you had to stop.
@fndrjbass You are right about that, in a police chase, the lead unit will keep going and one of the secondary units will stop to help the injured persons. But I'm an EMT. I'm not required to stop in my POV if I don't want to, the story about someone that didn't stop having their card yanked is just a myth. But I'm the kind of person (as an EMT) that will always stop unless EMS is already on scene.
This is very dangerous and why motorcycle riders should not be allowed to have ear plugs or anything in the ears to block out the noise Both drivers would get a ticket 1 For breaking and causing the accident. 2 The motorcycle rider failure to observe and move over to emergency vehicle.. Now here what i do know many motor cycle riders do use ear plugs or head phones to block out the noise so they cant hear what around them which is sad.
If I ever win the Lottery, I would personally come to Milton County, and purchase you a brand new personal response vehicle. 8501 would be jealous lol. Your video's are great, and if I can organize a fundraiser to help in the cause to get you a new response vehicle.. I will certainly try for that. Thanks Jason for these great videos you post here.
Whether or not they are required to stop and/or pull over(which i believe they are), an operator must maintain control of his/her vehicle at all times....seems like the motorcyclist was following a bit too close
If you were running code whilst responding it wasn't your fault. he should have heard you and seen the cars slow down to yield for right of way. Wonder what his excuse was...??? Why did the guy in the Blue pickup stop, We saw him get out of the pickup. What happened next. The guy in the red pickup just stopped dead in traffic.
Well yea. Thats normally how it works. If someone is injured right in front of me and I have the resources availible to help them, Im helping them first since they are closest. You can always dispatch another unit to the other scene. Yes it will make for a longer response time, but you gotta do whatcha gotta do.
Looks like the truck slowed, but the Motorcycle was paying attention to you more than the truck in front of him. That certainly is an "OH SHIT" moment. Great driving Jason!
@bigredchevytruck Actually if something happened in your district you do have a duty to act and if you refuse they can and do have the right to yank your certification
As my old fire instructor said, you are REQUESTING the right of way, you DO NOT HAVE the right away.. Yea i think like every other vollie, why in the hell dont people just get over? Its a million dollar question that thousands of emergency responders have asked, The only thing i can come up with is, as was stated in a previous comment, people tend to freeze in the presence of an emergency vehicle.. There are the choosen and gifted few of us that sit behind the wheel and operate those emergency
OK, so the main question is: Are vehicles on the other side of the road, traveling in the opposite direction, required to stop, slow, or move for an emergency vehicle going the other way? Because in this video, it's apparent that the drivers on the other side react differently throughout. Should the pickup have stopped or not? Because if it hadn't, the motorcycle wouldn't have hit it.
Depends on the state. Pull over to the right - meaning pull over and stop is generally the law in most states AFAIK. *I am not an attorney and this comment should not be considered legal advice.
May vary by the state. I know in VA even if you are OFF duty and either witness an accident or come upon one you are required as an EMT to stop and render assistance. It is called Duty to Render Assistance here and if you do not do it you can be criminally and civilly liable. In all truth I know EMTs that do not have EMT plates or anything so if they see a minor fender bender they will not stop and they can't be IDed as an EMT.
Jason, I have been watching your videos and I am impressed with all of them. Also I have taken a trip through the Milton Fire website and lots of great items to look at. I noticed 8501 has replaced his vehicle. Will you be doing the same in the near future?
@tamzntrev Wow. Pretty dense of you. The driver of the pick-up pretty much parked his vehicle in the lane of travel, not on the side of it like he should have. And then you have the motorcyclist who was most likely mesmerized by the approaching lightbar and not paying attention to the brake lights in front of him.
Just a confluence of events...that truck stopped short to yield right of way...maybe could have pulled over more to the right and the biker may have been riding too close and couldn't maneuver quick enough. Suppose you could also blame it on the al, al al al al alcohol...
vehicles that have a completely different mindset.. Those people, the "freezers" have a slower, reaction time, i guess that is what you would call it... With us we see it and as we are sizing shit up we are automaticaly already working..
Loud pipes save lives.....NOT. Douche could not hear siren, probably had radio on full blast to compensate for loud pipes. And/or was not paying a bit of attention to gap in front of him.
Due in part to something in basic physics called the doppler effect, he never would have heard him coming anyway. The motorcycle was clearly 100% at fault (not paying enough attention, and not giving himself adequate following distance) but it had nothing to do with hearing the siren or not.
Im relaxed lol. I didnt mean to sound like a jerk, lol. Yes I did hear him telling units to be careful. Yes, there were other units that couldve stopped to assist. Lets all just say this and put an end to this lol. Either way you look at it, Jason did the right thing. I believe he stopped because he thought that he should stop. Good work, Jason. I got called out for a MVA with an entrapment earlier today. Vids of it will be up soon.
@LCESstudios The guy in the blue truck was an off duty police officer.
@onemanband08 It is an older 1994 Crown Vic, if you search through my videos you will see a video of it or go to our website and view pictures.
MVA- motor vehicle accident.
WOW, intense Jason.. I watch all your videos and this one's the most bizarre...

+NextBigThing In my eyes, if you don't stop and help, you're a complete douchebag

amazing response video!!!!!!!!!
looks like he was trying to miss the truck

If that were you on that bike, would you want him to keep going or stop?
@topfireman They didn't go by EMS, probably road rash

@rex09able No, just not paying attention
how bad did the guy get hurt?
Forget the post here. You did the right thing. You had a Duty to Act. Keep up the good work
If I ever win the Lottery, I would personally come to Milton County, and purchase you a brand new personal response vehicle. 8501 would be jealous lol.

Damn!!! What happend to him? Was he able to walk a way? or what?
The song playing is blame it on the alcohol lol coincidence?
I bet the motorcyclist said "Oh Shit" about the same time you did.
Whether or not they are required to stop and/or pull over(which i believe they are), an operator must maintain control of his/her vehicle at all times....seems like the motorcyclist was following a bit too close
And/or too fast
@resxcueme He was. The truck yielded the right of way for me and the motorcycle did not see him or me.
that had to flip u out never had that happen to me and hope it never happens
If you were running code whilst responding it wasn't your fault. he should have heard you and seen the cars slow down to yield for right of way. Wonder what his excuse was...??? 4:40 mins shorter would have been better, but you do have a nice little town.
Amazing how the car in front of him just kept on driving
hope the rider was ok?
Looks like the truck slowed, but the Motorcycle was paying attention to you more than the truck in front of him. That certainly is an "OH SHIT" moment. Great driving Jason!
Hey Jason I saw that crash that was something
damn that hurt...
Wow talk about right place right time!
@bigredchevytruck
Actually if something happened in your district you do have a duty to act and if you refuse they can and do have the right to yank your certification
What was the orignal call you were going to?
Great Video, Stay safe
was the guy on the bike ok?
what is a mva i forgot lol and im a fire man ive had those kinda things happen alot not 2 me but infront of me
As my old fire instructor said, you are REQUESTING the right of way, you DO NOT HAVE the right away.. Yea i think like every other vollie, why in the hell dont people just get over? Just a leisurely drive through the Kentucky countryside... until BAM! A mesmerized motorcyclist plows into a pickup truck.
what do you say after you say 8502 when you radio right after the accident?
OK, so the main question is: Are vehicles on the other side of the road, traveling in the opposite direction, required to stop, slow, or move for an emergency vehicle going the other way? EMS did not transport so I think he was.

Is it just me or does that motorcycle look like it has emergency lights
I had to look 3 times, lol. Its just blue reflecting off the truck he struck.
+firefighter5430442 He must have been Martin Riggs. White tank and blue jeans.
wiped out
Campbellsburg
Some type of Whelen
@JASON8502 drunk???
4:45 damn
If the motorcyclist would have not followed too close he would have had enough time to stop.
@jay0n44
Not abandonment if he didn't make pt. contact....
where im at in iowa by law we dont have tos top for our fire fighters responding to the fire hourse. though 95% of us do since its a small community

vehicles that have a completely different mindset.. Those people, the "freezers" have a slower, reaction time, i guess that is what you would call it... With us we see it and as we are sizing shit up we are automaticaly already working..
@JASON8502 lol, I might :)
wow what were the odds of that happening infront of you guys! that guy was lucky but what happened to the other MVA? did another crew respond?
@BwoodLegionAmb12 Ended up being cancelled right after this one happened anyway
Loud pipes save lives.....NOT. Douche could not hear siren, probably had radio on full blast to compensate for loud pipes. And/or was not paying a bit of attention to gap in front of him.
