    It's amazing how much stuff can be linked to phone apps these days, our battery monitoring, fridge controls and aircon/heater can all be checked and controlled from anywhere via phone or tablet. some of the flash boats they can see/control everything via phone, it's an great time to be alive. Nothing like the old days before electronics

    Hi Andy, I have a great tip for you that my dad showed me years ago to remove varnish very quickly and easily straight down to the wood prior to revarnishing. Get yourself a piece of 3mm picture frame glass. Using a glass cutter wheel cut it in 2" x 2" squares. Use each of these as a simple scraper. Each has 8 useable edges and is far sharper than any conventional metal scraper. It will easily scrape of a deep coat of varnish without damaging the veneer below. It is so sharp that it will even remove a deep coat in a single hard swipe, Finished surface requires just a very fine sand to be ready to varnish. I have done this on my own boats for years.

    Andy, Melissa, Captain Jack & Ollie: Truly amazing how well the epoxy is going on the cabin sole, she is looking quite fresh. Great your house sitting close by giving you the time to complete the interior prior to sea trials. Wishing you all a Happy & Safe 2024 full of excitement.

    Dear Melissa, Andy, Oliver and captain Jack,
    For WIlleke and me it’s so good to see how nice the interior of Ocean Melody is turning out. You must be very happy that you can stay in a house of one of your friends because that offers you the refreshing the interior radically. This will make Ocean Melody much more enjoyable to live on board. We hope that all the members of the family are doing well and look forward to your next vlog plus we send you love from the Netherlands

    Not particularly related to this video, but as I’m lying with my wife in the very snug aft cabin double bunk of our Bowman 47, I wonder if you’ve considered using your aft cabin as your main sleeping area instead of for your kids and instead of the vee-berth in the forepeak.
    Our aft cabin has a head at the forward port side and an athwartships double bunk aft of it. The advantage is it’s a much better sleeping area as you don’t kick each other because the bed is too narrow at the vee and it’s much more stable when you’re sailing in a seaway, particularly upwind or thrashing along on a reach with the boat on a heel. It also makes it much easier to stick your head up into the cockpit in the case of sudden changes in the boat’s handling and performance. It also makes rolly anchorages way more bearable as you’re not getting tossed out of bed!
    Your kids will sleep anywhere, you not so, and believe me, on a passage NOTHING is more important to the ship and crew’s safety than the skipper getting good sleep and managing his fatigue. It’s a well established fact that most yachts that founder do so not far from their destination as a consequence of poor decisions made by exhausted skippers.
    Since April, we’ve sailed from Fremantle to the Ningaloo coast in tropical Western Australia and then right back down the WA coast, around Cape Leeuwin and right along Australia’s south coast to Melbourne, logging some 3,500 miles with about 20 overnight or multi-night passages and get great sleep in our aft cabin both at anchor and on passage.
    I know you probably need another project like a hole in the head, grrr! But something to consider.

    • @OregonMBA
      @OregonMBA 5 месяцев назад +2

      Interesting idea. A stern island bed is on my must have list for my next boat.
      Andy, do you have a floor plan you can share?

    • @SailingMelody
      @SailingMelody  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes we’re giving a lot of thought to the sleeping and cabin issue
      The main thoughts are
      We have two kids and they both can’t share the double in the forepeak
      We won’t be on passage often and will mostly be doing short port hops so that won’t be an issue
      I suspect when we are on passage then we will “commandeer” the aft cabin and the adults will use that when off watch as you suggest whilst the kids sleep in the forepeak but the rest of the time, which will be 90% of the time, that won’t be necessary

    • @SailingMelody

    A suggestion... If you mask off the treads on your steps and put one final coat of varnish you can sprinkle sugar or salt on the treads to give them an anti slip finish. After the varnish has dried you simply wash the sugar off with a damp cloth and you have an anti skid texture.

    • @SailingMelody
      @SailingMelody  5 месяцев назад

      The treads are already great and using a grit substrate would fill the voids in the treads reducing their effectiveness but thanks for the suggestion

    Great work love watching your channel, just couple of things you might want to consider 1) not sure what brand epoxy your using but most are an amine cure and get what’s called amine blush , this needs to be washed off with water before sanding , im assuming your using a blush free epoxy ??as not seen you wash prior to sanding ?
    2) if it were me I would go with a satin / rubbed effect varnish for the floor as it will not show as many scratches and shows less imperfections
    But great videos look forward to them coming live 👍👍👍

    Hi Andy I am in Portugal at the moment. I have been checking out the Harbours which are quite sheltered.The weather has been very mild. Villamoura is abit posher than Alberfeira which has good pontoons and a Chandlery. Their is a good estuary suitable for Kayaking or Dingy. Their are shops and restaurant's at Alberfeira where I had Lunch yesterday in the Harbour. I was speaking to some people on a boat who were also having Lunch in the restaurant. They told me the mooring fees were reasonable and they spent the whole winter here last year. Their are also some reasonably priced apartments around the Marina should you need to haul out. There are also some playgrounds dotted about. I also noticed a wall of washing machines. I had fish &chips and a glass of wine in the harbour for 12 euro . Though in Alberfeira town their is Macdonalds or Kentucky for the children. I hope you find this useful I am here until the end of January.

    Andy having seen your engine and heard you start it up ,I didn't here an audible oil pressure alarm, don't make the mistake I made in the eighties had a turbo engine in one of my water taxis on the Exe , and the oil feed to the turbo fractured and I was not looking at the instruments resulting in all the oil going into the bilges, so the engine siezed and cost hundreds of pounds to regrind the crank etc, Ever since I have had a cheap 12V bell attached to pressure switch like the oil light, gives you a few seconds to stop the engine. they are less than twenty pounds on amazon could save you a lot of heart ache if your on auto helm and not looking.

    Thanks, Andy, for another terrific video. I will say your cameras and batteries. This seems to be an ongoing issue with you. I guess you have so much gone on with your house sitting and back and forth from workshop to Melody. It's a good chance something missing. Like running out of varnish, power batteries on power tools running out. The excitement never ends. I'm as bad or maybe worse than you when multi-tasking and forgetting something. At least you weren't doing plumbing style work this episode lol.
    Andy in all seriousness Melodies workmanship once complete will be first class. Hahaha no, it’s not organisational issues it’s financial. I have 4 batteries for the Sony and 3 for the GoPro and can’t afford to buy more. Same with the varnish. Our RUclips money comes in around the 23rd of December and then it was too late to order any varnish for next day delivery. I think because I’m doing much longer filming of Timelapse footage recently that eats the batteries up quicker than what I used to do which was shorter clips of talking and less long clips of working

      I use Sicomim 5550 from Matrix Composite Solutions and yes there is very little issue with amines, although I did sand and tack cloth and also wiped down with thinners which helps, acetone might be better though

      I mentioned a couple of weeks ago I’ve been focusing on the interior woodwork as we have use of the workshop here but I’ll be getting on with the hardtop next week I think. Nigel basically disappeared. I went to get the tube roller back but unfortunately the rest of my stainless tubing which we had bought to finish the cockpit enclosure and make a bathing platform and a few other bits had been used on another project so I’ve been saving up for more stainless to replace that.

    Been watching since the start of steel melody, some great content but noticed a lot of footage now of sanding, varnishing etc which is slightly sped up - I tend to fast forward as it’s a little boring watching this over and over. Obviously just my view but maybe dial back a bit and put a few weeks of work into a single video rather than two to three videos of 40% of it of you stripping, sanding etc on double time.

      @@russcharlotteward33 no problem at all. yeah we’re leaving in the spring come what May and whatever isn’t done will just have to get done along the way. I’m keen to just get as much as I can done before then though, especially the stuff which is hard to do on an anchorage like stripping and varnishing floors. Our week basically looks like this,
      Monday : day off
      Tuesday work and film
      Wednesday work and film
      Thursday work and film
      Friday work and film
      Saturday work and film and start editing.
      Sunday edit all day and upload rhe episode for our Patrons.
      Sunday evening episode goes live for patrons only.
      Monday day off
      Tuesday work and film
      Wednesday work and film (episode goes live at 6pm for the public so patrons have had if a few days early.
      And that’s been our life flat out for the past three and a half years.
      In that time we’ve missed only 2 weeks ever:
      We film, edit, publish, film, edit, publish.
      And whatever happens that week in our lives is what goes into the next episode :)
      So when people say we should do this or do that, we take that all on board but most of the time we’re not engineering our lives around RUclips, we’re just living our lives and filming whatever happens and putting it on RUclips. Lol

Can you suggest several possible alternatives I can try and then I can monitor the performance of each title. Currently this title is performing great and I’ve no reason to change it. It’s funny, clickable, enticing and creative without being an outright lie. A VLOG. If you’re not enjoying it then that’s totally fine. Maybe check back in a month or so and see if we’re doing something you find more interesting.
