    Thank you so much for this video! This is just what I was looking for.
    First, I just want to clarify what I saw in your video regarding your installation. You teed the saltwater feed from an existing line and did not have to use a dedicated thruhull/seacock. You installed a 20-micron pre-filter in addition to the 5-micron pre-filter, which is what I would want to do for the exact same reasons you specified.
    Second, I want to ensure that my understanding of the Rainman unit is correct. One of the great appeals to me of the Rainman is that there isn’t a requirement for an initial “boost pump” because the unit is self-priming to 6 feet. I didn’t see you install one either. It seems that Rainman markets their watermakers as using just the 5-micron pre-filter.
    So, having said all that, I have a couple of questions regarding your installation, if I may.
    1) Have you had any issues with the pressure pump pulling the seawater through both of the pre-filters (not due to clogging)?
    2) Is there anything about the installation that you would change after having lived with it for a while?
    Thank you so much for any insights you might be able to share!

    Great video, thank you. Regarding your AC vs DC comment, this does not perform the efficiently much, rather AC makes more sens on larger system and DC on smaller. For anyone in the process of choosing av water maker, I recommend doing the necessary research, just as you have done. Still I would like to clarify, that generally you have four parameters you can balance to your situation: Production rate (how fast do you need to produce water), energy efficiency (how many ah/wh does I take to produce a certain amount of water), powering method (AC, DC, dedicated engine, main engine) and finally price of the system, that will be influenced greatly by the other three parameters. As an example if you run a generator regularly, you could choose a high output AC powered water maker with low efficiency at a reasonable price. On the other end if you want to run it from a limited source of renewable energy, you might choose an efficient unit with energy recovery and run it from DC power. Your water maker is somewhere in between, as it is low output and does not have energy recovery, and as such would be suitable for a situation where you have a decent amount of solar and/or low water consumption. A system with energy recovery would make the same amount of water for 1/3 to 1/2 the power consumption (i.e. a Schenker 30lph would draw around 10A), but the unit might be double the price to purchase. Happy sailing⛵

      @@sailingavocet we’re no longer in the Med. We did our 2022 spring and summer season in the South of Spain, the Balearics, Sardinia and Corsica. The marina prices in the Med are outrageous so anchoring is a must for normal mortals. Afterward we spent the fall and winter 22/23 in Motril and La Linea, Spain. Great locations and affordable marinas. But we prefer to stay on anchor rather than deal with marina berths.
      We are currently in Porto Santo in the Madeira archipelago. This is a wonderful place.

    Water purifiers should be installed in a place with a clean and stable water source. You can install the water purifier at the back of the boat, close to the water pump.

      It isn’t a purifier, it’s a desalinator and it is installed at the back of our boat near the pump. Everything is within 3 feet of eachother which is the shortest run we could make - another reason why this unit is so great

    RO water is great, but it also strips out all the minerals. Have you evaluated adding some back in?

    • @sailingavocet
      @sailingavocet  9 месяцев назад +1

      Good question! Not at this time, however I (Marissa) am really sensitive to distilled water so have to supplement it with electrolytes to keep my tummy happy.

    • @jayelwin
      @jayelwin 8 месяцев назад

      Adding minerals back to the water makes no sense. Plenty of minerals in your food and it all ends up in the same place. Your body doesn’t know if you ate or drank them. Minerals in water are for taste.

    • @sailingavocet
      @sailingavocet  8 месяцев назад

      You are correct to an extent! However, I tend to forget to eat during the day so if I am chugging down water from our tanks I notice I get a little stomach sick if I don't compensate with electrolytes OR pair it with food. This is actually pretty common after running it by a few doctor friends who are also sailors. Very thankful to have a great community looking out for our health!@@jayelwin

      A manual approach, if acceptable, is to buy a product with salts (such as Magnesium, Chloride, Potassium) and add the requisite number of drops to the volume of water to be consumed. That is far cheaper than buying an automatic salt feed system.
