- In terms of cost and equipment the Volkswagen Passat has traditionally bridged the gap between mainstream and premium sedans. With the introduction of the 2012 Passat Volkswagen has changed its strategy. Starting at less than $21,000 the latest Passat is not only built for the masses, it's also built in America specifically for American tastes. In this video Kelley Blue Book's Micah Muzio drives the 2012 Passat to see if VW's freshly Americanized sedan retains its German soul.

No one I know who had a Volkswagen Passat had any complaints about it.
eternalhalloween1 lol I got a Passat I love it
That's great. Everyone I know who has it seems to really like it.
eternalhalloween1 yeah it's the great Mid Size Sedan
That's great! I always told people it would make a great old moonshiner's car. Think about it. (A) Good fuel economy. (B) Good power. (C) Decent cargo space. (D) Handles well. (E) To top it off, with all the advantages, it doesn't draw a lot of attention . You made a GREAT choice!
Bought mine new in 2014. 116,538 trouble free miles! Original rear brakes just replaced. Still have original plugs and coils.
Did transmission service twice, coolant system flushed twice, brake fluid flush 3x.
Runs and shifts better than new, and ZERO squeaks and rattles! Am I a satisfied owner? Damn right I am! More reliable than my German built 2011 GTI w/DSG transmission.
I love how this guy makes a car review. Excellent job!
Good review, you added a sense of humor in it without looking desperate for laughs !
This gentleman is an excellent reviewer. Very interesting, yet very informative.
very good review from kbb.. I think this is the first review i enjoyed from kbb... congrats
this guy is the best and funny. keep him kbb I'm watching your reviews from now on.
nice work again, Micah.
that go pro is taking serious abuse!, love the review btw.
This guy is a great presenter, Keep him KBB! Not boring like the others
Very great review. I've gained a lot of knowledge about this vehicle.
Very great review.
great review!
Very nice review.
Reviewer has personality. A refreshing change.
Good review! Keep up the good work. Two HUGE advantages the Passat has over the Accord (at least in my book), is NO CVT, and that the TDI is available. On my test drive list for sure.
nice review
Somehow these video are getting better, different than those from motor trend
I just bought the new 2012 V6 SEL Passat and I love it! It's the best car ever!
Passage seems to be vw most reliable car. My mother has a 2004 passat and has hardly any issues with it. She plans on buying this model this week. I have a 2013 beetle and so far no issues.
Anyone notice the steering is way too light on the 13 SE 2.5
the exhibit of all its competitors made me laugh. KBB is fun
@cb7pwn yall get the same version up in Canada.
Is it true that all new Passats come with standard navigation so they can find their way back to the dealer's service bay?
The rear reminds me of a 04 A8 and a 3series combined
I just got the 2.5 and I love it.
i hate it, fight me
Cedric Bolduc hate IT? You just hate IT get out this video is for people own a Volkswagen and say Its great then only watch this video you didn't own any so you are basically a weird person you didn't Try IT but you say Its bad.
Ck Loh lmao
Does this car have light or heavy steering?
@@calgary2800 heavy in the 2.5
@squarelike They built it in America. No cost of importing the car.
I just bought my Passat and I love him!
I can relate. I love my baby. Just got her a few days ago.😄
Same here! Got my Passat going on a couple months ago. So much room and the fuel economy with the TDI is a lot better than I would have thought.
Randal Calvert how does it do around sharp corners at higher speeds? I really need a car that hugs the road.
@@coulsonkyser9757 the car takes corners just as well as my compact Chevy Cruze did while feeling slightly weighty in comparison because it's a bigger car. It's odd but the car floats at times over bumps like a very softly sprung car, but it does not lean in the corners. Yes, it hugs the road well without being too firm. I have 17 inch rims which are smack dab between the standard 16 and optional 18 inch rims.
To those of you who own this car, what do you think of the turning radius. How does it do in parking lots?
personally, I think it looks pretty classy. Kudos to VW for knocking 7 grand off the price although I think it was 7k overpriced before.
@squarelike could be in the metals and suspensions they use, considering those are the expensive parts in a car's construction. 7 grand in cost reduction is madness when you consider the economies of scale VW already enjoys when they make the cars in such large volumes.
Really nice looking.
Wish I know how they achieve 7 grand cost reduction ... still, fun video to watch
Why is there no six speed VR6?
@squarelike being built in america with parts sourced from North America means the value is based on the US Dollar, not the Euro. There is no trans-continental shipping nor taxes/tarriffs to deal with. They are shipped by railway to distribution hubs around the country. 75% of the scrap materials from the build can be recycled, some of which is for profit, which means more savings. The list goes on and on, but you can always stop by my showrooom and check one out for yourself. :)
The OEM rear view camera for this Passat can be purchased on Amazon. Designed for factory navigation screen.
nsmsam where how
@ghrpdx I obviously wasn't talking about me when I said that 'all the reviewers and car experts are wrong'. I was talking about reviewers and experts by countless car magazines or shows.
@thelifeaquatica There is wood, he must have just chosen piano black. Look at pictures of the interior online.
For real, I don't know of one gas station that dose not sell diesel in my area.
I like VWs, and I want them to succeed. I just can't afford to keep running to the shop to get them fixed. Speaking of shops, Consumer Reports also ranked VW dealers and their service bays near rock bottom when it came to customer satisfaction and service.
@jvrdlc right, time will tell. but i have a VW with over 100000 miles and it is amazing.
It's been 4 years or so not being able to do a lot of road trips with the high gas prices. Back in 98 I drove from Vancouver BC to NYC in just over 100$ in my 97 Jetta 2.0. I'm talking about including Marlboros and washer fluid. Not including food, booze & room. These days it hurts to burn gas and smokes and so does the weekend trip to In-laws. I don't like the cheapness of the new jetta but the new Passat TDi seems to be a nice excuse to drive far away from the In-laws. Luv VWs
Sad with the troubles with the dsg transmission like in all the VAG products (VW, Seat, Audi, Skoda). I love the VW products but the DSG has disapointed me. I am in Mexico and the warranty is only for 40,000 kms, can you believe it? Audi here guarantee your dsg transmision for 80,000 kms.
@game2heart
But it sounds waaay better. You dont need all the power from an engine everyday but u sure can hear it every second its running :).
What's the steering feel like? With the V6 & FWD wouldn't there be a lot of torque steer?
passat or audi a4 2012?
i passat down in one for the first time yesterday
@jvrdlc that is the old passat, this is an entirely new one.
very entertaining presentation :)
greetings from germany
(without Apfelstrudel)
yes, it is still designed in Germany and still is germen, but no w is built in Tennessee in a state-of-the-art plant vw made themselves, so reduce cost of the vw passat
is that kevin bieksa's bro?
@ghrpdx Actually I did drive quite a few Hyundai's, including a 2011 Sonata. And trust me, the ride quality in the Passat is definitely better, not to speak of the handling. Besides that there have been countless reviews and comparisons not only on RUclips but also on TV or in car magazines that say the same thing.
Does this car do well around corners at higher speeds? I need a car that really hugs the road.
Coulson Kyser yes, it does
Yes handling is excellent.
Is it me or KBB stopped mentioning resale value and they don't go through more information like they used to on their prior testing on their vehicles!!
If you didnt sit so close, yourknees wouldnt hit the steering column. you are way too close. The air bay will hurt u sitting that close. Arms way too bent.
VW saves a lot of money by engineering cars so the same engines, transmissions, and suspensions all fit in a lot of their vehicles. Power train costs go way down when you can manage that. Toyota also does this very well.
The only thing lacking in these videos is the actual stats from the blue book and stuff like that. We want more facts, and science in prices etc. not just a look at the ride.
drivers who like to be budget and eco- conscious VW is perfect car, it works with clean diesel with low emission engine , best rated fuel economy
Tavga Hawrame oh how poorly this comment aged
@@jimbecker6512 Haha
How much should i pay for 2012 pasaat in 2023 for 300000 kms , i am getting for 3.5k cad is it worth it????
Bout 6-7k
@Logicsupremacy Well, I obviously exaggerated when I called it a Korean POS. The point was that I'd never spent that much money on a Korean car, especially regarding the fact that their designs start looking dated just a couple of years after release. That design issue is also a reason for Hyundai's subpar resale value.
So yeah, I'd much rather buy a Passat with 28 less HP and slightly worse mileage but a much better (and timeless) design, better resale value and better handling.
@autoxerwgn And all that does is make each one of their cars increasingly dull. Like the GTi, having the same engine now for over 6 years with out any changes to it.
We need more diesel cars in America.
truck stops sell diesel fuel which all semis use
Love the passat, better then that over rated accord
mayb so my man, i wouldnt kno any more..lol
why do all the rest of the world love their diesels and holds its resale value better than the gas versions
@ratmtbola I get your point about Passat having timeless design and all but you failed by calling Sonata a Korea POS.
King Jack my 2011 Sonata was anything BUT garbage. Hyundai really stepped it up that year
Like the german panzer.... built the best .....
dont it seem weird that no car sold in the USA goes over 44-MPG?? these VW Cars have been know to go 80-MPG in Europe, is this true or have i been lied to?? :)
Obviously you've been lied to lol
Diesel is available at more Gas stations than Truck stops.
@Logicsupremacy Yes, many people still question Hyundai's quality, for a good reason. Hyundai didn't get the image they have for nothing. And looking outdated very well atrributes to Hyundai's poor resale value. Who wants to spend money on a car that looks outdated and as if it's 10 years old even though it's just over 5 years old?
So yeah, I'll repeat. I'd much rather spend my money on a slightly less powerful & economical, yet better looking, better resaleing and better handling Passat.
You're thinking of kilometers and not miles. Europe uses the metric system and the U.S. uses the imperial system. There is no way a car would ever get 80 miles to the gallon, no matter where it is sold.
No more 2.0T?
What the hell, VW?
I saw the Malibu pic and was like wait wat? looks like the current model with diff headlights.. lol but good review, i'm middle ground on the outside but not a fan of the inside. I like my american inuitive interios not some german substitue. ^^
@ghrpdx You should think about getting some glasses, because this Passat doesn't look like the 2004 Kia Optima AT ALL.
And yes, Hyundai's are better in reliability than VW. But 'MUCH better'? Not at all. Slightly better, if that. And I don't know where you got those resale numbers from, because according to KBB and several other trusted recources, Hyundai's lack greatly behind VW's in terms of resale value.
And as I already said. I prefer styling, ride quality and handling over stupid numbers.
And I guarantee that at least one of their AM radios didn't work, or headliner came undone, had rattles and squeaks that could;t be fixed, not to mention electrical issues. Go ahead- Google the surveys. I am actually a fan of VWs. I just wish they were as reliable as Toyotas or Hondas. Or Fords, Hundais, Kias, Buicks, etc, etc...
@ghrpdx Well I guess all the rewievers and car experts are wrong then and VW's don't handle better because someone on RUclips said so.
Sonata owns this as it already owns many other competitors.
@ratmtbola First, looking outdated could well be your opinion and that is not what attributes to Hyunday's rather poor resale value. What attributes to it is a reliability question that American comsumers did not get over with yet. It's only been a few years since Hyundai sold cars like crazy so people like you still question the quality of them. Once a few more year passes, the resale value will go up. Lastly, I don't think many people will be convinced by you saying VW has a nice resale value.
wouldnt be proud about build in america!
I'm sorry. I was basing my comment on my own record having owned 2 VWs and a Beemer. And if you don't trust me, just take a look at any JD Power or Consumer Reports survey. Go ahead, Google them.
lol at the falling cameras
In my opinion the 2012 Passat has horrible blindspots.
How do I know? Because I own one.
One plus is the economical Turbocharged Diesel Injection (TDI) engine. It's only available on the TDI SE, TDI SEL, and other 2012 Passat Models with the TDI badge in the name.
um... most regular gas stations sell diesel now, been like that for awhile, no need for a truck stop
That 5 cyl engine puts out less power than the Sonata's 200 hp 4 cylinder.
Yea but it’s not gonna break down like Hyundai POS’s
TDI FTW
weight reduction unicorns!
YEAH I KNOW BUT THEY ARE DIFFERENT MARKETS. I DONT THINK YOU BRITS WOULD LIKE A LEFT HAND DRIVE CAR SO THEY CHANGED THE MARKET FOR DIFFERENT NATIONS.
I don't like the exterior styling of these especially the rear end, the Euro one is better looking.
This guy is great.....and hot too.
Lol "a lady you bring back to the folks.....
My only implant is that they no longer are particularly distinctive as VW used to be know for. Far less recognizable shape and styling, even if it is still a quality car
ya zer gut dissee mark paassat ishab aine
passat92 yare
verttt
I choked when he referred the Passat as a lady to bring to parents...
I personally do not like the new volts wagons......I dont like the look of the interior or exterior but I do like the the gas mileage of the deseal.
Diesel MPG's for the WIN
TMI
refining labor, no wood veneer, prop rod instead of pistons, older base engine, less overall materials that are cheaper, no importing costs
my grandma has it
You're so handsome! Regards from Mexico 🇲🇽
