Lexus UX300e - Is this late arrival to the EV party a worthy guest?

  • It is fair to say that Lexus has built an enviable reputation for its hybrids over the years, so you would think that all that know-how will make for an EV that shoots straight to the top of the class. But does it? And given how there is a raft of new talent heading to the mid-sized crossover sector, surely of anyone, Lexus is the one brand that can stand head and shoulders above all else. In this week's road test review, Bryan gets to the bottom of it.

Was considering a UX300E after having an IS300h, NX300h and an RX450h, but I reckon I’ll go for the Merc EQA.

I love how everything thinks nuluxe is real leather! It’s amazing how convincing it is

This seems very much like a Toyota driven half arsed 'we better chuck an EV out' car. Over 50k for an EV that comes with Chademo (really, couldn't even be arsed to use CCS in Europe even though it is now the de facto standard), and only charges at 50kw - that would have been acceptable 6 years ago, but now? - not even competitive.
No thanks - there is being a badge snob and then there is just being silly. Far far better offerings out there now for that kind of money.

Thanks for another entertaining review (I loved the one about the tantalising Honda e), but it misses the point about Toyota/Lexus and EVs (as do almost all other reviews so far). This electric version of an existing model says : ”We can make EVs (we make lots in China), but we don’t want to. Why? Because we have perfected petrol hybrid technology to an optimum of efficiency and reliability. And we think that EV technology is not matured enough. But when we make EVs for the global market, they will be at an optimum.” Toyota has a conservative approach to technology, which is to put it in mass production when it is safe, predictable and reliable. Reliability beeing the paramount value for Toyota and the central message here. It shows in one piece of data about this particular car, which is constantly overlooked in reviews : the battery is guaranteed 10 years and 1 000 000 km. Hence the considerable difference between total an usable battery capacity, or the special attention given to its thermo management, for example. Is Toyota right about this conservative approach ? The past suggests it might, but only the future will tell. And the ”genuine” EVs from Toyota are yet to come (perhaps, in 3 to 5 years).

Given what you get in EV's in its class you're better off waiting until Lexus gets its act together. There is is so much lacking in this car. I'm actually on their side and love their earlier LS400. I owned a 1996 version for years and loved it. I had almost 200 thousand miles on it and it purred like a kitten all the way up to the day I traded it in. And only traded it for a new car because it's a very expensive out of warranty luxury car to maintain. Both catalytic converters went out. They cost $280 each and that's not including installation. If it weren't for that I would have held on to the car for a few more years if I could have.
I'm not looking for an EV and three that I have my eye on are Hyundai Ionic 5, Kia EV6 and the Nissan Ariya. Two others on the list are the VW ID 4 and the Tesla Model 3. Each of these vehicles compare quite nicely. I know the Model 3 isn't really in the same league as the others and that's where the Model Y should be but I'm not a big fan of it. It's a good crossover but lacks a few things I love about the Model 3.
I think over the next year we're going to be treated to some really nice cars.

The other brands had to go all electric earlier because they would have to pay a lot of money for total Co2 for alltheir cars.

Not a great start from Lexus. Think they need to go back to the drawing room and start from the bottom upwards.

@Patrick totally agree. It has the makings of a good car, and its quality of refinement is off the charts. Just too expensive and too compromised.
