- once part of Connex, down in London, and later changed hands to the Emergency Services Training College in the Wirral this class 508 train sits outside, some say its abandoned some say the college has closed down....but I'm unsure as we didn't stick around to find out.
The British Rail Class 508 (4PER) was a type of electric multiple unit (EMU) passenger train built by British Rail Engineering Limited, at Holgate Road carriage works, York, in 1979 and 1980. They were a variant of British Rail's standard 1972 design for suburban EMUs, eventually encompassing 755 vehicles and five classes (313/314/315/507/508).[10] They mostly worked on the Mersey rail network from 1982 until withdrawal on 16 January 2024.

had fun over here last few days...its been years since i explored anything over here and bloody hell I've missed the place

In the early 80's this 508 was new to London, then transferred to Merseyrail in 1984 and then transferred back to London Connex in the 90's. I was a driver on Merseyrail in the 80's and actually drove this one.
Great stuff thanks for the info
This is a great video George - Believe it or not, the college is still open, but it's only open a few hours each week. I've personally been on this unit too, I was able to ask in the reception around back.
Also, another fun fact, it's actually two different units, the front coach is from the first of this subclass of these trains (508201), and the rear is 508209. Also, it was in much rougher shape just a few months ago, but the unit was cleaned and repaired for filming on BBC's Inside Number 9 recently.
Great vid George.
These two cars were part of 2 different sets
508201 and 209.
508201 was formerly numbered 508001 when working in London as a 4 car set.
Then it moved to Merseyside as a 3 car and renumbered 508101.
508209 was formerly 508021 as a 4 car in London and got renumbered to 508121 as a 3 car when that arrived in Merseyside.
Only when Merseyrail dispensed with 12 of its 508s in 1995,they went to Eastleigh for refurbishment and Entered service for Connex South East where they remained until 2006 then as South Eastern Railway.
The 4th cars that were missing from the 508s were reformed into class 455s and are still in used today with South West Trains.
These can be easily identified due to their lower height.
Other classes very similar include 313s,314s,315s, which have all be withdrawn and tge 507s that remain at Merseyrail.
Although i think they are down to around 9 sets now.
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the train info
Haven't the 507's been retired? There's new trains now.
@@R6AAO
still about 9 left in service but should all be retired very soon when the final 777s arrive
Love the view of the old seats
Brill aint they
The last standing 508 coaches, great video
Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed the video
not the last, theres one in moreton in marsh
Came from scotland to see her back in March, really is a piece frozen in time
Its lovely isnt it so many memories as a child riding on these
Hi guys just to make you aware. The trains have gone. Due to vandalism and theft we have sent one carriage down south the other has gone inside to protect it from vandals and graffiti artist’s.
Mate of mine txt me last night about this
Sad about the theft and vandalism but with no security im not surprised
Great videos George 👍
Thanks martin glad you enjoy them
Fantastic mate
Thanks for watching mate
I didn't even know that was there mate. I think that class was also used in Glasgow back in the day but not 💯% sure. The cab layout is the same as a Merseyrail unit. The Long handle on the desk is the Drivers power handle with The Dead man built into it, the smaller one is your forward, Neutral and Reverse and the one on the extreme left marked full service is the Auto Brake. I am surprised it's not been bought for scrap if it's not being used. I read something the other day that they are going to preserve 507001 The first in the fleet and the one Queen Elizabeth 2nd rode on when the new modernised Merseyrail re opened in the 70s.
Apparently the place is still open looks very run down to me ha ha
Id forgot all about this until i seen it through a gap in the fence whilst on the prom
Mad to actually sit in the cab with all the controls intact
Such memories of these trains going to new brigthon as a kid
Thanks for watching stephen
@@g2emedia1977 No worries mate. I used to love going to New Brighton. I can still remember The Donkey rides on The Beach. Happy Days 👍👍
The Glasgow's variant of these were class 314s that operated from overhead 25Kv system.
Lovely trains too.
All gone though now sadly
@@chris-io1ki Nice one. I remember reading something years ago but was a bit unsure as to the similarities.
beautiful, praying that yobbos dont smash it up
I can imagine a big group of people running up to a burning train shouting "stand back we know what we're doing" only to stop dead in their tracks because they can't find the metal stairs from the practice train.. 😂
Ha ha you can only imagine that happening just shows you though hiw high these trains were without the platform
Thanks for watching mate
The training centre is still open mate I was on a course there 2 weeks ago.
All the cars parked there (around 7:10) seems there's some course running then.
Belter facility does first aid, working at height and off shore courses.
Good vid.
Id heard mixed rumours it was closed down and on first glance with no security and the gate wide open that was my initial thought but did see cars there so yeh its still open
Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed the video
I work next door - it's still open.
An episode of 'Inside Number 9' was filmed on the train a few months back which has just come out on BBC. Can see on the outside of the carriage where they painted over the graffiti for it.
Bob on as always George
Hello Phil to the channel although I've sent him on your gaming one

Do you know if there are any preservation efforts to save this train?
Probably not whilst its still getting used for training maybe one day ...i hope
@@g2emedia1977let’s hope they don’t scrap it
Hi TB76 returns
How is Wolfgang
I need the address as I’m a really big class 508 fan and seeing it in its old 2+3 seat alignment makes me want to be there instantly
The address is literally in the video
@@g2emedia1977 I should rewatch it
Cmon lads let’s preserve her! There are still sum 508 centres coach’s in departmental so that’s solved¡ what are we waitin for?? Hah
Deffo needs preserving this agreed
Hello mate imagine doing 8 hours in that cab when its warm fuck that no way lol
Not a chance mate looks to stuffy that
Merseyrail trains were well better when they had those type of seats.
Agreed
We're is that mate I want to go there
It says the location in the video?
Mate this is cool am gonna go there and experience this meself
@Pabloscouseboy deffo worth a look
Am gonna go up there tomorrow am really interested in things like that my dad years ago used to take me to crew to see all the trains up there
@@g2emedia1977 💯👍
The emergency service train centre is still active mainly during the night and evening times
I would have thought theyd have security on this site at least
I went there less than a year during the evening and someone came out and asked me to move on as they still use that area
Are you allowed to just walk on. I’m scared if I go they will fine me
The gates wide open and no security id just walk in
Why would you get fined?
