A day in the life of an owner operator. Paying to go to work!

- This is the part of being an owner operator that people don’t see. Many times you have to spend the days, or days, working just so that you can be ready to go to work. Today I got the new decals on the truck, installed and air scale, installed a new cb antenna, reorganized some gear, got the truck titled, and loaded up on snow chains for the winter months. Even though it was another day of spending money instead of making money, I still love it!

you goofed while working on your truck , you didn't get dirty ! 🤣 . I don't care what people say , I also say it's a Jake brake
First manufactured by Jacobs Vehicle Systems. Pretty sound argument to call it a Jake Brake in my opinion. Like referring to a box of facial tissues as Kleenex. The brand has become the generic term.
The company actually takes legal action against towns that post “no jake braking” signs rather than “no engine braking”. They used to (maybe still do?) have a form on their website to report jake brake signs.
@@rustybones99 i haven't seen the term "jake brake" on signs for several years now. Every place that I've been through have changed to engine brakes🤣
Funny story, about 20 years ago i was running with about 3 or 4 other drivers from the same company as i was driving for. We were on a two lane highway in Kansas, it was about 10:30 - 11:00 at night. We came up to a set of railroad tracks on the northern edge of a town. A train was on tracks, so we had to stop. One of us flipped the jakes on & revved the engine & let it cackle while we were waiting for the train to clear the crossing. We started talking on the radio about how notorious that town was about cracking down on the "no jake brakes" law & we were all doing it.😆
Then we heard someone get on the radio & say "it's ok boys, we'll let you go tonight"🤣🤣 we were surprised & was trying to figure out where it was coming from. He said you boys keep trying to guess. About the time the train cleared the tracks & we could start rolling again, disco lights came on in the implement dealership next to where we were waiting. He said you boys stay safe out there tonight, it's been fun talking to you all🤣🤣 he pulled out & escorted us through town🤣🤣 that was back when trucking was fun🤣🤣
It's only a jake brake if it's made by Jacobs
Really enjoy seeing the processes you have to go thru to get things done. Not boring at sll.
Thoughts on using a Bluetooth capable scale do ya don't have to go to the anolog gage.
Absolutely love these types of videos. More of the vlogging vs straight rescue videos. Love to see more of the behind the scenes
Like the new truck and what you are doing to it.
Just a thought for when you mount the chains. Anywhere close to the tires, front or back of them you will get snow and ice build up on them. In my area the ice build up can make getting them off a bit of a pain. Good luck with whatever you choose.
Casey, we went to the city school bus garage and bought our auto chain units from their retired buses. Most have never been deployed. We've also bought their sanding boxes that have a Y tube in front of the duals, works great on ice to get rolling and stopping. They also have the commercial contacts for new units as well.
Have a Great Day
Keep up the Great Videos 👍👍
Good morning Casey , enjoy almost all of your videos!
I noticed you using heavy duty tie wraps to secure the hoses to that metal brace prior to installing the airline T. I suggest getting some smooth radiator hose, slicing it and wrapping it around each hose where it contacts the metal prior to installing the tie wraps to prevent chafing. This could potentially save a lot of frustration in the future!
Yep, And using stainless bailing wire instead of tie straps.. Ask me how I know..😏
Check out On Spot for automatic chains, great success in mountainous Norway. Never used them myself, but a collegue swears by them. Just turn it on before you get stuck 😅On our tandem trucks we also have the ability to transfer load from the rear axle over to the front drive with the air suspension, that also helps allot during winter driving. Also a tip from norway, always keep an extra jug of windshieldwashing fluid, pour it over the tires if you can't get grip on the snow. Removes asphalt and makes the rubber stickier when you need it. Beats putting chains on if you just need to get rolling.
so neat to see your daily operator stuff Casey! Can't wait to see some upcoming tow runs with your new heavy wrecker.
Can’t wait for the snow recoveries. ❄️
Casey I really enjoyed this video. I am a subscriber to some trucker channels and I have always heard it referred to as a Jake brake
I definitely like the new stickers for on the doors.
The scale was a really good idea so you will always know the weight on your truck. A very smart investment that every truck should have
1st
Agree. Sort of lame.
I HATE slinging chains. When I was OTR, I carried chains that never came out of the bag. Because my philosophy was that if the mountain pass had a chain up alert, then I parked.
Once I started contracting with a local feed company years back, I had to break open the bag, as I often had to deliver to Amish farms on dirt roads in the PA mountains. Fun have chains on, and STILL sliding backwards down the grade...that will squeeze your cheeks.
The joys and struggles of an O/O.🙄😅
But trucking is so easy. All you do is drive and make the big money 💰. (Coming from an owner operator)
Having used automatic chains except for the ease in use the regular chains outperform them by far.
Casey another great video. Nice to you building up your company. Well deserved for you and your family.
We had or second snow/ice pellets. Nothing stuck but a great reminder. I need to get my truck's ready for winter. Be safe out there!
Short list for what? Thank you also.
@@michaelltnv6741 just report that comment. It’s spam it’s not from him
@@TowMan127 Thank you I did tell Casey in a message. I kinda figured out, I appreciate you letting me know!
Great vid - like to see all that goes into prep for this truck... BUT we did want to say "Hi" to Riley....
Check out auto recycling yard that have old school buses.for used auto chains on then
I was going to suggest the exact same thing. My local school district orders all of its buses with auto chains. They never get used because schools here close at the mere mention of snow. Plus the district garage does a great job maintaining all of the buses. I'm sure the auto chains have years of life left in them at a fraction of the cost of new ones.
Hi Casey, another really informative and interesting video, as a UK viewer I'm curious about the USDOT number on the cab of (heavy) vehicles, I assume this is a requirement in law, what are the basic rules around having to display it?
Hurts to watch the struggle with pliers at 7.50 :D. It really shows how much easier it would be, if you had those in the right way in your hand, when those try to grip to the antenna as you try to let go.
I knew someone would bring that up. HOWEVER, he did get the job done. Is that not the idea? But, on the bright side, comments help with the algorithm, so there is your comment and then mine to you.
Hey Casey, when does it usually begin to snow. Can’t wait for tracked keep videos again.
It already did
@@CaseyLaDelle sweet, can’t wait to see it, and good luck with the new tracks, and make sure to keep them tight, those new tracks will stretch a good bit in the beginning.
We had slinger chains on one of our trucks. They worked good on flat ground to help the truck in a pinch. I don't know what they cost, you should be moving when you activate them or they will get bound up in front of the tires. If you stop on a slope they are worthless if you spin out. Good luck.
again enjoyed watching your enthusiasm and knowledge.. no one explains as thoroughly as you do..
My guess is that those chains are not the cheap variety like the ones you had to cut off of that truck you rescued last winter when it couldn't make it over the pass 😊
Casey, get yourself a "Tiger Tool" for pulling u-joints. You will kiss yourself for it! Great tools.
I have one
really like the air scale. thinking i should probably invest in one as well.
Look into the other option, like Appweigh, which uses Bluetooth sensors and app. Not a driver myself but an acquaintance who does RUclips (Clutch Trucker) has video about his experiences with it. He thus doesn’t have to exit truck to get info.
Nice mounting, but I would have put it inside the box, the way it is now, if you blow a tire, or run over debris in the roadway, that box where it is, could be easily destroyed. Just a thought
Great job on getting things settled in. All this takes time!! Love using the Jake Brakes. Love the Sound of it! 🤙😎
Casey man you need one of quad flying drones to that Bluetooth to man. Your control it from your phones to.
Acrosst, heighth... Casey is clearly descended from Archie Bunker.
Hey Casey, I noticed your wiper blades might need replaced. I use the Michelin silicon ones. I highly recommend, 1.5 years on and still good. Follow directions when putting on. You run them dry for 3 to 5 minutes. This puts a coating on windshield that acts like rainx. If they start to streak, just clean blades. Loved them on box truck I drove.
It is a dadgum Jake Brake. When will these newbs learn? A heavy truck like your flatbed has a Jake Brake. Little trucks have engine brakes.
Ever tried the Philly sandwich at Alfalfa Feedin' Trough? Sooo good!
Hey bro I’m new to the game. I have a few question I really need help with. Can you help me? I’m willing to pay?
Nice to see behind the scenes of what you need to do to get your trucks ready to work!👍😎 Still catching up on your older videos! Keep up the great work and stay safe out there!❤️🙏
The life and times of Casey the recovery guy !! luvit
Good thing you took the big truck to get the tire chains 😅😅 Could you not hang the chains on the rack behind the cab? Up out of the way of road crap.
Are you going to put a rear camera on your Truck? Or is that fesible?
I like that weight gauge. I've had something like that in my head for a long time for my Range Rover to better gauge trailer tongue weight, as the air suspension makes it very difficult to see how much you're putting on. So good tip on having the valve in there to not murder the gauge.
Hope you get to show the heavy towing, always fun to watch Ron Pratt operating his stuff. Maybe there's a rotator in your future too?
Fast chains are great to start moving. Offer little to no help with stopping. So when it comes to mountains and valleys i will take traditional chains any day
I like your decal advice. I put mine on exactly 4 inches above the lower edge of the door.
Automatic chains is good, but if get stuck, they can useless they need some speed to work the best.
That’s why you still carry singles to throw on the outside for the really nasty conditions
No way! I was working at Les Schwab that day on those trucks in the background! Not sure how I missed you haha.
Technically it is a Jake brake named after the company that makes them Jacob's Vehicle System's so there is no reason to argue about it your both right
I used to deliver to the Les Schwab warehouse in Prineville. Beautiful country.
Absolutely love how " eh i don't care"
😂😂😂👊🖖
Another day in the real life of Casey! Thanks for taking us along.
I'm sure the capabilities of that new setup will grow your towing business.
I think you should add a couple of amber warning lights around your truck like on your grill and evens on the back side of your truck just to make your flat bed truck more visible at night when you are doing a recovery
All old school truck drivers call an engine brake a jake brake that is a fact❤
how come trucks and heavy equipment always need work done to it so much wear and tear
Hey Casey !! 2 comments to make (1) ,,That weigh scale box has a tendency to gather water inside it & freeze making it useless !! ☹☹ (2) ,,Does the under lift have the power to raise the tandems off the ground to allow putting tire chains on easier without having to crawl between the tires to hook them up ?? 🤔🤔 Anyhows ,, Have ""FUN"" with your ""NEW" toy & make some $$$$ in the process !! 🙃😉🤠😎😮👍👍👍👍👍
Any lots out there near you for sale?
STALKER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!😆
You can’t start a video taking out the trash… that’s @victory style bro
Engine brakes are on light / medium duty truck heavy duty have jake brakes lol
Is it required to bring chains in your area? It is in Norway from the 1st of November. Along with correct winter labeled tyres. Pros and cons of regulations, but I think it's a good thing. So I support your purchase of chains right away 100% 👍
Yes, it’s a requirement to have them
Sorry Casey, but you used your pliers backwards at 7:45.
Great vid! Thanks!
I'm thinking the red background on your logo might look snappier- similar to your YT icon...
Enjoyed spending the day with you and YES, it is a "jake brake"....!!
H D equipment Grand Mound, Iowa ask for Guthrie
At least you were able to find chains then again your not waiting for 2ft of snow ..must be a couple hundred pounds of chains moving those will get old quickly
Casey , it's your truck. If you want to call it a rubensmith brake . You can. 😉😁😅🤣🤣🤣😂
My friend bought a taxi service, one the cars is a prius. They have a weird slapstick shifting but actually complete with a jake brake. prius car w a jake brake. its half battry powered. not sure if thats why they have jake brake. its cute when he uses the jake brake, i tell him it purrs like a ktten w jake brake
A sad truism to the title of this one. Tough way to make a living these days. It has always been tough as an OO it is even more difficult than usual now. Relentless fuel and insurance prices among other things.
I must be to old I've never seen automatic tire chains and I drove 40 years otr
You’ve got hair!!!! We only ever see you with a baseball cap on 🤣👍🏻
How to put your chains on your toolbox it keeps them out of the way
Beautiful rollback, and only known it as a Jake Brake
Even though it's morning. I'd like a burger. lol Thanks for the video
Love the video, Getting prepared for the weather is the best thing you could do
I should know better than to watch this channel while eating/drinking. Snorted a mouthful of milk out of my nose this morning with the “it’s an engine brake” comment.
I know, you have to drive trucks to understand this, but it struck me as hilarious.
I figured you'd paint the rollback red before putting the stickers on.
I like this color way better
I’ve never used battery pliers on an antenna before.
Slowly getting it the way that you want things to be! 👍💯
Auto chains are a bad idea. They’ll leave you when you need them the most. Emergency braking, the auto chains will not be under the tire
The quality ones are.
Logo looks best on the white. Found this site here in Sweden BUT look at all the dealers in the USA - scroll down and check the map. God bless.
System we had for weight meant ignition on to check, surely in this day and age it would be possible to wifi to a phone instead of having to check gauges inside the cab or in a cubby hole..
Well, there’s the AppWeigh system that uses sensors , an app and Bluetooth but I think it requires system to be fully aired up though can be checked from inside or outside truck.
Find a old school bus for the auto tire chains!
Technically it's called a dynamic break
OMG the sub woofer on my computer was certainly doing it's job with this video. Added a gravitas to the sound of the engine. SUPERB!
1) Made the trip a few times to Prineville on a motorcycle. Nice town. 2) DMV and super easy in the same sentence? 3) Might want to leave some kind of appreciation gifts for the FedEx, UPS, and the others dropping off your heavy deliveries. Keep on their happy side. 4) I buy almost all my new tire sets at Les Schwab. Great business. And as always, thanks for the info. Nice to watch.
If you undercoat your vehicles. The best is slightly diluted bar and chain oil. When dry it turns into a kinda wax. It’s the best.!! Look into it.!! I live in Ohio.!! Love ya content and your honesty about,,,, your content!! Lol. Wish you the very best.!
I have a question for you why 3railers and not singles is it that bad over the mountains and do you use spider bungee on the chains my just curious
Yes, it definitely gets that bad
On-spot work great! Had the on the school bus’s.👍🏽😀❤️🇺🇸
Hanging the chain sets behind the tool boxes would probably be a desired location ?
Or some form of roller that can store the chains rolled up ?with under the deck location, roll out to drop down onto the tyre ?
There's a lot to it aye ?not just buy the truck and go out to conquer the world !
I don't know how you handle the cold and snow 🙂
Yes! Sure enjoyed that Casey…..lots of things and storage areas to consider. Is snowing in late October up in the mountains usual? ❤️🇦🇺🇺🇸
Looking forward to new videos with this truck!
Just wish you were closer than the other side of the world. Could really do with some get and go LaDelle style a short call away.
I actually have one of those gauges. But I never knew what my dad had it for. I thought it was just a big fancy guage in a box for working on equipment. Now I know it's probably broken and just something he brought home for parts.
How much for that nice truck?
Absolutely Beautiful Truck Brother ! Love the colors.
You deserve it !
Yet Another Great Video 👍👍👍
I went to the Timber Lake job corp near Prineville. I hated the place. I signed up for forestry service and they put me in everything but that. I stayed long enough to get my GED in '95 and I was out. The staff there didn't seem to care at all about what the students wanted for education and whenever something happened, they would just randomly pick someone to blame and make their life hell for weeks on end.
Hey looking good I'm on the other end of 97 starting a tow company myself I love your videos be safe keep doing what you do.
I heard a story about Jacobs, the guy that invented the "Jake" brake. He was heavily involved with Cummins engine development, and somehow Cummins screwed him over with some patents, so he quit and then developed the engine brake, and made way more money than he did with Cummins. If I am wrong, I am sure someone will straighten me out about that story.
The way you placed your decals makes them easy to read. No sudden transition
I'm jealous Casey, we run single rail to cross the pass. They are quick and work for most applications but when it's bad up there I wish for some good triple rail like I ran in Alaska.
The bad thing about single rail chains, you spin the tires ONE time, and then they are useless.
@@Rat-Builder that's right 👍. It's a company policy not a driver choice. I used triple rail with ice cleats for my 13 years of Alaska driving.
I'd hang the chains more towards the front so they don't ice up as much.
No room
I have the air suspension gauge in my cluster which is mainly for reference for loading and unloading the chemical tanker
Curious how many viewers own vehicles with air ride cabs? I assumed it was most Jeep and Kia spectra owners watching.
You probably know this already. But just in case you don't, the truck has to be on pretty smooth ground for that scale to read correctly. If a set of duals is in a hole it will affect the reading. Also sometimes the parking brakes make it bind against the suspension while loading and you may have to release the brake to get a true reading. As far as the automatic chains are concerned, they are awesome as long as the wheels are turning fast enough to keep the chains thrown under the tires. It's definitely a problem taking off from a stop. They need speed to get centrifugal force to throw the chain out under the tires.
I love watching you work, get ready for work, basically anything. You always rock my friend. Peace .
