      I googled quince and not sure about this one tree…but you could be right on one of the other trees I saw briefly once I got through all the brambles…hard to tell as the Ivy has taken over that one too! 🫣

    If you want to try and identify your apples you could bring some along to the Apple day at "The Organic Centre" in Rosinver in north Leitrim on Sunday 24th september. They have a large orchard of Irish heritage apples and other fruit, Veggie gardens and loads of polytunnels, The place is well worth a visit to inspire you with what you could do with your land. I've been there a few times and always learn something new. Give it a google! Best of luck from a fellow house (cottage) restorer across the border in Co. Sligo, Denis

      Aww wow I didn’t know that existed, I will definitely Google it, especially as once we are under control with the house stuff I would love to be growing some of our own food! How’s the restoring going for you? 😊

    What potential there is on your land! It is wise to see what is currently hidden before it is lost! That looked like a ‘cooking apple’ for apple tarts and pies. Usually more sharp than an eating apple. Excited for you🎉❤

      It’s a great piece of land, so many established trees, I’m really looking forward to seeing it tidied up a little and accessible all the way around it. We have been told that that the previous owner of the house used to make great apple pies…to the point where she was nicknamed granny apples by the grandchildren.

    Well how lovely to have my thoughts confirmed it did have sash windows originally! You are both doing such a wonderful job now to binge watch the rest of your content as a subscriber. Stay well it is important in these projects to have breaks to pamper your mind and body with rest.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  Год назад

      Aww thank you! Yes..binge away! Lol. There are still a couple of the old sash windows in one of the outbuildings, that im hanging onto for maybe a future template for new windows. Also we've been told that there was also shutters at the windows originally too...so it would be lovely to replicate them too. I'm not very good at breaks but do try and step back here and there 😉 😆

    You area demon with those power tools Dawn. It is obvious how much you and Ben are enjoying living in such a beautiful place. It might be a good idea to cut through the stems of the ivy right around your trees towards the bottom so that it starts dying off which might make it easier to remove later. Best wishes XX

    Plenty of clearing to do folks, well done. My best guess of apple variety would be the 'Apple Green Chisel' variety, which is an Irish heritage variety of dessert apple. A medium-sized to large, greenish-yellow skin with a little russeting and a few red streaks sometimes; the flesh is white, crisp and fairly juicy. A very healthy, vigorous tree. The fruit is particularly clean and scab-resistant, and can be picked from late August in favourable years.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  Год назад +1

      That does sound like what it could be! Big big apples too! There’s another apple tree further along the land too but I couldn’t quite get to that one. Brambles and Ivy all around it again.

    Fruit tree wood is excellent heating wood. High caloric value. Worthwhile stacking it in your woodshed

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  Год назад +3

      That’s something else on our to do list….get a wood store going. We have lots of fallen trees that will provide us with a good start to that!

    Great work. You're right, a change is as good as a rest. It's nice to do something completely different for a bit, and being outside for a day or so should revive you.
    The Ivy is a bit of a menace. I mean, it can be lovely to look at. Vibrant green and all that, but if you let it grow it will just destroy anything it grows on, houses, sheds, fruit trees... My rule is that it's not allowed to grow on the house and it's not allowed to grow up trees. I find if you check the places you know it wants to grow, and you don't, every couple of years and cut it back to ground level... you can stay on top of it fairly easily. The problem with fruit trees is that the Ivy will put a lot of weight on the branches that fruit trees aren't designed for, so they come down and that's the end of your fruit tree.
    Keep up the good work. You're doing well. You make a great team. ;)

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  Год назад +1

      Thank you 😘 I think I will follow you with the no Ivy rule for the house, outbuildings and trees! It’s destroyed so many trees out there! Might tackle it again tomorrow.

    Everybody says cut ivy off at the base but on the contrary, it is easier to remove if it is green and malleable so better to go from the end and work back to the base of the vine. That is my experience but feel free to develop your own method of course.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  Год назад

      It didn’t work so well for the outbuilding roof lol but I’m sure on a tree it will be much easier to do it like you suggested…because I know when I’ve cut it at the base and waited for it to die off…it’s stuck like glue! Lol

    According to Jean Auel, in The Clan of the Cave Bear series, nettles are good eating. Might be interesting to research that. Don't know if they are different types, or if need be in right season, etc. But would like to try them.

      @thecornerhouseproject  3 месяца назад

      Yes lots of people have said about doing things with nettles and how good they are for you. Nettle soup seems to be one of the popular things to do. We haven’t tried them as yet but we certainly have am abundance if the fancy takes!

    How much land do you have? You'd get a lot further on with an electric chainsaw and a Brushcutter, they aren't that expensive. Looks like a cooking apple, they're delicious stewed or in pies.
