Here's a tip to prevent "leakage"... The leaking is actually because there is a small gap between the fill holes and the shell. The fluid can get between, and leak down... Especially if the fill syringe is held high enough to make large drops. What I did to solve this in getting the fluid to flow in better was I used a small sewing needle and carefully put it in the reservoir hole. I then let the fluid "wick" into the reservoir down the needle. This is also a way you can see how much fluid is inside, similar to the "dip stick" your car has for the oil. Hope this helps.
That is also my assumption on how it is leaking into the shell. For me it is very hard to see that happening when I am trying to not let the filler tough a hot smokestack and melting the tube. I was considering using a syringe used for CA gluing to use to fill it up since it is a metal tip and could fit in there. The needle idea may also be an option to try first.
@@DaBobsNScaleMancave I didn't have the small syringe, so I tried the needle. It worked really well. It also allowed me to keep the tip away from the hot smokestack, as you can put the drops higher up on the needle. Please let me know if this works out for you as it has for me.
I can’t tell you how helpful this video has been. I received mine today and thought it was defective running so slow. Now that I’ve seen yours I feel a lot better. I’m also having issues with derailment. Definitely need to fix that!
for N scale it has some amazing details. the hooks on the top of the tender really stood out to me. great review sir. like the problems you share with us all as well.. not all roses for some models
Thanks. The bridge is pretty nice I do say, it is mostly going to be used for my reviews for a while unless I take it to a Free-moN event which is what I built it for. Getting ready to pull the top apart to see why it leaks.
Great review thanks Bob. Been on the fence about getting a BLI or waiting for Kato's offering but think I'm gonna pull the trigger on a BLI. Cheers. Ben.
Hey Bob I watched the Video on my Big Screen TV its amazing how on a HD TV you can see stuff really Up close, This Model of Big Boy is Neat the Detail the Smoke the lights its got allot going for the Model, But past that I half to be a Critic Broadway makes nothing but junk let me rephrase High Priced Junk Watching the Video the Rear Pilot Trucks witch are totally essential to help Guide the Model we're hanging up towards the model not letting the Wheels help steer the Model through your Turnouts I seen the Rear main Drives leave the Tracks if there isn't no rear steer its like the Front Pilot's they are what keeps the Engine inline & I wonder in certain instances if the Main Drives don't bind alittle I've watched other RUclips Video's of this Model & modlers are seeing similar issues the model Derails & you mentioned Bob it don't go Fast I think that might be a Good thing I'd hate to see what the Outcome would be if the Model Moved at a Fast pace Rolling through a Yard and it Derailed hitting other Locomotives or Rollinstock & if it Derailed on a tall Bridge say Goodbye to it and possibly some expensive Rollinstock.. And I guess I'll End with why build a Model if its going to leak fluid all over itself thats plum crazy if someone Gave this Model to Me I'd probably only use it as Stationary Prop like the Kenefict Big Boy... And as I Make my Gripe about this Model Bob I've had issues as Well with Kato's 844 Locomotive I had both the DC & DCC version and they did not Run well at All only my Athearn Big Boy has Done well on my Kato Turnouts it does essential well on my #4 Turnout i also wanted add I'm not Hollering at you Bob you have some pretty darn good videos if Broadway would just put out All of the Time non crappy Engines I think they'd really have something going no one should have to alter there Tracks to accommodate this or any other of there Engines.. Hope things get better for ya with this Engine.. Take Care Bob I hope to see ya at Spring Creek's Model Train Show... Allen
Thanks, it is frustrating to have it lift up like that on this switch. It is the only one that is a custom made by a friend, the rest are Atlas or Peco and it works fine on those. I do plan on being at the Spring Creek show this year, see you there.
BLI does not make junk. That's sheer nonsense, at least not with their most recent models and not in N. Most n scalers who own one will tell you that their mikes and pacifics are some of the most reliable, powerful, and good looking steam locomotives you can find, and not to mention the variety of roads they come in. The earlier models like the first run of F units and the old M1s have a deserved bad reputation, and the T1, though liked, can be temperamental, but those models were from years ago. Obviously now and then youll get a problematic model, but that is true of every manufacturer. Given that out of the N scale builders BLI offers the most complex stock steam locomotives it should be expected for them to have issues now and then. That said, out of the dozen steam locomotives I've bought from them none have given me issues . The only engine that has is an E8 that was probably 2-3 years old by the time I bought it. I understand your personal frustrations with maybe getting a poor model, but that does not damn the company and is not representative of the thousands of examples of your same model that operate without issues. What gets me is how BLI offers something N scalers just a few years ago wouldn't believe and in quantity and variety, yet at the slightest wink, the slightest little issue that often is so easily fixed, people will jump down their throats, ignoring the fact that other manufacturers mess up just as often all things considered. Its like the model railway community just has to find something to complain about. And also, what? You expect a Big Boy of all things to just instantly agree with all track conditions? And if you mean the lesser engines, the only thing I can expect to hinder them is dirty unkept track. Yes they are sensitive to that, but why is that acceptable to begin with.
Also make sure you take the shell off and clean all the exesive smoke fluid before it gets to your decoder and drive system. Buy a smoke applicator from seuthe products and it should solve your leaking problem .4 ml of fluid
Nice, but too big for my small layout and radius, thanks Bob. The TCDNMRA might be interested in you filming live their convention coming soon near the MOA....
Both have their positives, depends on what is important to you. Pulling power, Kato has 4 traction tires vs 2. Details and functionality, BLI looks like it is currently being used and running, smoke box isn't silver because the heat has dulled it. Kato looks like it was just painted and way too glossy. BLI has smoke, Kato doesn't. BLI comes with DCC and sound, Kato doesn't and must have a complicated custom install performed.
That's why I do a review, to give everyone an option to pick what they like more. This model is physically bigger than the Athearn version but with different issues and features.
I like this BigBoy, it runs very good on perfect track and looks and sounds great. Smoke works but can leave a mess if it leaks like mine.

Smart idea! same in o gauge smokers !
Another great review! Nice to know about the possibility of a leaky smoke box.

Excellent review , thank you
Great video. That's a nice looking Big Boy, and that wooden bridge of yours is just as impressive!
Let us now what you find out about the leak..
Thanks. The bridge is pretty nice I do say, it is mostly going to be used for my reviews for a while unless I take it to a Free-moN event which is what I built it for. Getting ready to pull the top apart to see why it leaks.
AWESOME!!!!!
Amazing
Very nice video Bok
Nice to see BIG STEAM in N scale...
Great review thanks Bob. Been on the fence about getting a BLI or waiting for Kato's offering but think I'm gonna pull the trigger on a BLI. Cheers. Ben.
That's a nice locomotive. A very impressive trestle too
Da’Bob! The white and blue paper should be the Big Boy decal to affix to the front of the boiler.
Oh, I didn't see that, must be because it is white on white, lol. I will have to look at that closer then, thanks.
Thank you Bob. Great review and very helpful information...that helps to save me big bucks for not craving for this LOL.

That little sheet is the front bigboy Sticker
From what I heard what sounds awesome. Would wake the house if I ran it with all the sound.

Nice video! BTW, what is the slide switch for underneath the trailing trucks on the cab?
Bob, which do you recommend. Kato big boy or bli big boy?

Use a syringe and needle and get the fluid straight down the throat of the filler hole.
Nice model, but I like the Athearn 4014 better.
That's why I do a review, to give everyone an option to pick what they like more. This model is physically bigger than the Athearn version but with different issues and features.
Oil leak means instant weathering.
Would be cool to see a side by side comparison once the KATO big boy comes out. Do a SxS comparison between the KATO, BL, Athern.
That is my plan to do a review of the Kato one and compare the three in a different video.
@@DaBobsNScaleMancave I have the KATO big boy on order.
