Nicely detailed locomotives I must say, they sound awesome with three all running at the same time.

I’ve got me a CSX SD40-3 ordered. I hope you’re looking forward to a review of that from me. Also got me another CSX ET44AH to pair with my current CSX Tier 4 and the SD40-3. Enjoy yours in the -2 with BN and UP.

Thanks for the review! I was considering picking one of these up, but now that the tunnel motors were announced I may be waiting (I know, just get both… lol).

Grest review! The only thing I don’t care for with mine, is the plastic bolder it sits inside the box.
I wish scale train’s would use a plastic jewel. Box,
    Thanks
    George

the "portholes" on the front and rear are, I believe, classification lights

Thanks. I don't make it to MN very often lately. No good train shows very often.

The small round things on either end are classification lights. They are to show the direction of travel, green for forward, red for backward. Most railroads removed them as the loco got older and water tended leak in. I bought 4 of these 2 NS and 2 BN. All 4 are DC and only ESU makes a E24 decoder as of now. So that is a big disappointment. As well are the copper pick ups show through the trucks. For what you pay for them they should paint them. Great review Bob!

The Northtown stencil indicates the maintenance facility the unit is assigned to.

Great review and thanks for sharing. If I had to nitpick I'm surprised by the different green paint shades on the long hood vs the deck edges. Not sure if thats on purpose, maybe Drayton knows. That and the somewhat glossy finish makes them look cheap-ish. I'd like to see a matte clear lacquer just to dull them down a bit. all in all a great first model for ST. I noticed scotteeague painted over the copper pickups black to hide them. probably pretty easy to do. Im sure there was a reason that was not factory coated?

@10:12 I see your models have the grooves molded in to them as well. I did a product review and these grooves are not on any other of my Scale Trains locomotives. The fuel tanks are to low and causes clearance issues, that I noticed you had on your layout too. Some time the details aren't overlooking the issues of these models. Stay safe out there.

The issue I had with mine was the track where I have a bridge was sagging so it made a big hill and it high centered. They do make their stuff to be sized to scale which will find the bad track quickly. Other than that, they ran fine for me.

@@DaBobsNScaleMancaveI understand the scaling, and I have others of their models with no issues running. This model was built low and they knew it when they molded the fuel tanks with the valley for the tracks. This is a major flaw with their design.

Interesting that they have MTL couplers. Or atleast it looks like them.

Nope, those are exclusive ScaleTrains couplers. I think these are version 5's now which couple very easily once lined up to do so. Earlier versions were very tight and difficult to connect or disconnect. The box is compatible with MTL couplers.

I just received my 2 preordered SD40-2 and one had a bad front truck. Does anyone make good quality locos anymore? Looks are not everything, it must run good first. This could possibly be my last Scale Trains purchase.
