Because of your great videos, i had bought a 17’ Ioniq, and now we also have a 23’ Kona. Keep up the great work.
Thank you Björn for showing us exotic places like "Spekkerööd"
Spekeröd, Spekeröd, Spekeröd, Spekeröd 😂
you can make head to head LR vs SR+... same day, same distance, same conditions... it will help those thinking between the 2 options
Bjorn, I have a TM3 SR+ that I can lend you for the 1000Km chalenge. But you have to come to Portugal to do the chalenge. That's the bad news. The good news is that we have temperatures above 30º here now :)
Bjørn is thinking of traveling to a sunnier and warmer place to escape the cold in Norway and perhaps a flight trip down to Algarve in Portugal is a good alternative.
Win win situation ;-)
1000km challenge in Portugal with the current public chargers infrastructure?! 😂😂😂 That would be interesting... 😆
@@madsdgdhg they would be driving from one supercharger to the other and back.
My summer trips of 300 and 400 km in the Kona went so well that I am planning a mid-winter trip about 840 km. It looks like the charging stops will add 30-60 minutes over the time that I might take in fossil-burner. On a 10-hour trip, not a big deal at all.
You have to eat someplace. If you are not in a hurry that is going to take you 1 hour, ICE or BEV.
Very first look and i thought i see Hulk! Green light and your face man!
From what I remember of the live stream, the answer to the question "where does that extra 80 minutes over an M3 go?" is roughly "every charging stop takes 45 mins rather than 25". So Kona drivers will end up fatter than Tesla drivers. ;-)
You should do leaf 62 run in cold temperatures. So everyone can see the impact of passive cooling
Thanks Bjørn hope you get a M3 to benchmark this measurement in the cold. Keep up the great work, it's inspired me to try taking my Kona on holiday to France.
Nice work Bjorn. Really appreciate your 1,000 km challenges. I finally just saw my first Kona Electric in Toronto this past weekend. It was white. It's way better in red! In contrast, I see Teslas every day, mostly Model 3s.
Maybe good time to wait for real winter and redo some 1000 km tests to see, how much extra time those low temperatures add on long trips. Many people travel in winter on holiday.
redo the test in a "known" car from last summer and compare results
Offfft seeing this infotainment system, trip computer and dash. Makes me CRAZY appreciate how damn good my tesla screen is!
Awesome! I'm looking at an e-niro (good luck in the USA) and I live where it gets -36c on a regular basis mid Winter. Nice to see what kind of range drop to expect.
Always like your reviews very thorough and relevant information.
Now we need two 1000 km test drive. :) A Summer and a Winter test. :)
Hi Bjorn! I have a suggestion: why not some "Winter 1000km challenges" to compare the vehicles when it's cold? That'd be interesting.
Regards.
Good idea! 😁
Jérôme Lévesque-Boucher
A summer and winter score for the 1000km rest would be interesting.
And do it in Finland where there is real winter, not like you have in Norway
just did a 1000km in a Kona EV myself... I need to edit and release :)
Greetings from Finland! As excelent as expect😍
I envy you so much for having all those charging facilities wherever you go. Where we are, a small country with never a distance greater than 400 KM we are hard put to find a charger and even harder to find it un ICED
Maybe driving a little slower would have brought you home faster. Real driving time is about 9 hours estimated. 5 km/h slower means 45 km less in 9 hours. Thats, with 120 km/h (115 real) instead of 125 km/h 23 minutes longer driving. But you'll save at least one stop with this 10% less power consumption. Or in other words 200 wh/km. 23 kwh less loading at 71 kw is 20 minutes saving on loading...including going to the parking also 23 minutes. And you're not loading on 71 KW avarage.
Thumb up for the chart. Thank you Bjorn.
In "Car Scanner ELM OBD2" app that you use you can toggle from HP to kW in the settings. And you can see both the actual battery SoC and the displayed SoC (just like in Leaf Spy). This app has many profiles for other EVs: Niro, Soul, Ioniq, Zoe, Prius, Prius Prime, etc.
8:42 Those are nearly the identical taper points I observed in the Kia Niro EV when I was testing it. First taper ~55%, second taper ~70%, third taper came even quicker around 75%. The first two taper points are almost identical to the Bolt EV, so I'm guessing it is due to the battery cells.
I would actually love to see you do a winter weather 1000km challenge with the same cars. It would be very interesting to compare the numbers.
10 days in Portugal at the end of October would be nice, 4 hours direct flights from Oslo to Lisbon and back to Oslo for 2 adults only costs about 5000 NOK including 23kg luggage per person.
Thanks for the video - loading a BEV gets better/faster each year. That was the same result with e-cannonball in Germany last month. What is missing so far are cheaper cars and an elektro car with price and size of my Dacia Lodgy or a Dacia Logan for families with children. Greetings from Germany
Excellent! really good considering the cost of this vehicle and it's body type.
Hi Bjorn, yes Tesla Model 3 Standard range + would be very interesting! On the verge of choosing between a 2020 Kia Soul EV 64KW or Tesla Model 3 Standard range +
I'm from Finland and have driven my Kona MY20 for about ten months. As far as I can say the speed is the absolute killer for this car. Last time that we went to see our relatives we drove 800km at one go (and two charging stops). The average consuption was just below 160 Wh/km and outside temperature was -7C when we started and +2C when we arrived. Mainly the speed limit was 80 km/h. But next day when we drove another 300km and 60% of it was 120 km/h highway speeds the consumption was way higher. Still a solid car and haven't let me down even when it was -33C last winter.
I'm in Belgium, and am jealous of all the nice Ionity chargers you have. Dayum. I'm lucky to find a 50kW charger in the wild.
If u want warm temps, it’s been 95-97 degrees here in southern USA a lot lately. Finally in the 80’s this week.
As always... an excellent vid.
Greetings from Quebec city, Canada 🇨🇦
So that's why you were in such a hurry at the charging station. But now my Kona starred for a second here, so its value quadrupled ;)
Another marathon review.! The man who rubber stamped my purchase of a new Kona Electric. #BjörnFree
Ionity is great and indeed a big improvement. Got an easy and relaxed 750km in 9 hours on holiday with my e-Niro. Left at 9 in the morning, two stops at Ionity and arrived at my hotel at 6 in the evening. Pushing it a little more would and cutting the lunch break short would have improved the time. With Ionity and Fastned the non-Tesla cars have also become great travel cars. Now we only need a single payment system for all rapid chargers in Europe ;)
Bjorn Hulk
Om man kollar i ett diagram skiljer det 4% i densitet mellan 21 och 0 gr celsius. Luftens temp förklarar bara en liten del av skillnaden.
Tack för intressanta videos.
Åke j
Someone, please let uncle Bjorn take your SR for a spin!
You could do a 1000km winter challenge, many is still unsure about driving EV in winter.
Since its getting colder, i wonder if you should do a video on range reduction testing on the different populate EV's to see what their range is when its really cold. i wonder if there are differences in range reduction between vehicles.
The most interesting thing I saw, is the pictures of Bjorn who goes on the Europe trip with fosile car. Damn I would like to see that in 2020. Imagine Bjorn going to the Europe with Renault Laguna. That would be nice to compare, expenses, time consuming, and time of travel.
Hi Bjorn, not sure if you’ll have access to the new MG EV, but you think it can compete with the Kona/E-Niro? With that agressive pricing, it sure looks like a good deal! Keep up the good work :)
Hi Bjørn, have you thought doing the 1000 km challenge with the Kia E-Niko?
It’s very good in term of cargo, now it has it own app (UVO) and, with the Norwegian speed limitations, good consumption. Maybe it’s not that good with charging speed, but it worth to try it.
when the tesla semi get out we want an 1000 km challenge.
Who's with me?!
he must then first get his truck 🚚 driver's license, or am i wrong?
@@ElmarBon yes he needs
Or the Roadster with a 1000+ km range. ;)
@@Tjita1 Sounds awfully heavy 🤮
@@samusaran7317 Yeah, but with 2000+ hp that's not that big of a deal..
I would love more wintertesting. Especially outside of Norway. For example normal roads in the middle of Sweden, without a lot of planning before. Random chosen places. Like a real case scenario. Is it even possible?
Can you do this run with a M3 SR+? I'm curious how the smaller battery and lower charging speed (vs M3 LR) will do.
Question, does it use the battery heat to heat the cabin? The climate was drawing 0.01kW so i guess it is?
Do all Norwegian electric cars have registration numbers starting EV? Another great video, thanks Bjørn.
that preview picture, the hulk :D Anyway my question how expensive is it to ride electric vs bensin/diesel? what does it cost to fully charge your EV? read something about fortum salting the bill when it comes to charging your car on their chargers.
Maybe you should do the 1000km challenge with a Leaf in the winter, since it suffers so badly from throttled charging speeds - might get a better time! 😄
You turn a bit green at the end Bjorn. Were you ok. Was it Hulk or Shrek 😂🤣. Greets from Namibia...
Don't hate Prius. It's Unique! And i'm the fourth generation Prius owner... :)
I'm subscribing to your RUclips. Thank you.
Great entertainment Bjorn, Are you going to do the 1000 KM challenge in the Model 3 LR AWD?
You can still do more races with Pawel! Miss those
Want to test a LR RWD (with 200kw charging), will easily top the list. But you have to travel to NL.
Hi Bjorn is it possible to make video on choices of used ev? If one who wants to buy something reasonably cheaper.
Does that OBD-tool work on the Kias too? In that case, what is it?
It could be fun to see the same 1000 km test in Germany with free speed limit. With Ioniq (28kWh model "King of EV's")it is no problem to drive 1000 km under 11 hours, but I think that the cars with big front area and not so good cv will take longer time to drive the 1000km with high speed because of high energy cosumption
I've noticed that on the US version on the rear of the Kona it has the Kona badge where your Hyundai badge is and it has Electric where your Kona badge is. The US Kona doesn't have the Hyundai badge. I wonder why they are different?
Haha... it’s the Hulk! 😂👍🏼
Shhhhhiiiiiaaaaat, is Bjorn Banner the Incredible Hulk?
den bilen der hadde 1/4 batteri av hva den nye tesla roadster generasjonen har! det er sjukt at den nye teslaen som kommer i 2020 eller 2021 kommer til å ha 1000 km + med batteri på en lading! :O
One very interesting test you could do is to repeat one of the tests you already made. Say with the Tesla Model S P85 and see if there is a significant difference in time that can be used to leverage the results.
You should do it in the next weeks before cold winter hits Scandinavia. On freezing conditions driving speed will not be the same and therefore test will not be usable to compare.
I knew it... Bjørn in reality is Bruce Banner 💚
Hi! Will you test the Kona 2020 too? Does it has the same shit charging as the new Ioniq?
Great video as usual... Being in Canada with cold weather here also, it is interesting to see how the cold affects it. Wondering what your total charge time and total cost for charging was for the 1000 km..
8 hour 33 min driving time per the trip computer and 11 and 1/2 hour trip time SO 2 hours charging
@@jasonriddell but 11 - 8 = 3, so I guess it's 3 hours charging, not 2.
I couldn’t pronounce those words at all anyway being an American. You can say them how you want and I will never know.;)
Bjørn! Your test results should be a mandatory stamp on all electric cars :) It is super useful. Have you considered running this test with a regular fossil diesel car? Just to get a reference time. This way, we would know how far behind EV's are, or how close they are.
pure drive time 8 hour 33 + 2 refuel stops 20 minutes each so 9 hour to 9 hour 10 minutes
Interesting. It is amazing what temperature and speed does to consumption. I drive 30 km @ 100 km/h high way and 30 km @ 60 km/h major roads each day in my Kona. Average speed is about 60 km/h The consumption is between 120 - 130 wh/km . Temperature between 15 - 25. C. GOM @ 100% SOC has reported 506 km range Climate off.
Whilst you can't control the temperature, I wonder if driving slower will get you there faster?
interesting theory and to see the difference EX with the Kona throttling at 52% if he calculated the KW/KM to stay 10 to 50 percent each leg you could calc the "proper" speed PER leg and the saved time charging VS the "lost" time from driving slower
Robyn Edwards
For some cars it wouldn’t surprise me if a slower speed would make for a faster 1000km time - the Nissan Leaf springs to mind since it suffers badly from throttled charging.
But I’m not sure it really would work for the e-tron or Model 3.
Love for you to make the last one, Renault Zoe ZE 50 :-) (corrected) I think!
Peugeot? you mean Renault.
@@John_S_NL LOL I knew it was wrong but could't see why...blame dyslexia. Thank you for correcting my error.
what is the result whith kona 39kWh ? it's a next test ?
Will you redo this test in summer?
very good report I have my self an ENiro in quebec Canada and the result of consumption is around the same as the Kona 21 kw/hr at 4 deg. Good chit!!!!!
how is it in the WINTER asking as a PEGGER here
@@jasonriddell between -5 C and something -30 C but I will see this winter because I have my Niro since september
Great as usually, tnx from Ukraine, man
26:27 Björn is Bruce Wayne. (HULK) :-D
Bruce Wayne, is Batman, not the Hulk😂😂
You should try a SR+ Model 3.
Saturday i take it on a test drive
Last 1000 km challenge for the year.... Yeah.
New Winter Trondheim Challenge! Bonus Aurora challenge?
Yeah. Damn Winter.... You Scary.
I have the same color Kona EV =)
What is the name of the app??
Is that the 39kWh Kona?
we are one the mooove
I find it hilarious that anyone would criticise Bjorn's pronunciation. How many languages do you speak?
Bjørn GreenMan 😂

@26:13 Straight outta Area 51
So many cars coming in 2020... Are you hiring? lol
Corsa-e 1000km challenge please :)
Or E-208
Im in Australia where they haven't taken off yet.
If the charging stations are busy as with petrol stations, your time waiting will be ridiculous. How is that overcome? Do you pay by card at the station?
If you have a house, you will plug in at home. Car ready in the morning. No fuel queues.
Greetings from Cairns.
@@ewanoneill1011 Last year I drove from Cairns to Perth. Seems a long time befor that is possible in an ev.
Have a look at Plugshare. You can drive to Perth from Cairns. Not fast chargers all the way though.
Are here any Kona or Ioniq owners? I got a very bad news about Hyundai electric cars. The 12V battery last just 1 year. I'm in a Hungarian FB group and there several owners say the same. Bjørn do you know something about it?
New Kona 1000 km challenge? :D
Which smart phone app are you using to view the data?
Following
It is 'Car Scanner ELM OBD2' for Android and iPhone, with several EV profiles: Kona, Ioniq EV and PHEV, Niro EV and PHEV, Soul, Bolt, Volt, Zoe, Prius, Prius Prime, Optima PHEV, etc.
Alt Brown Thanks!
Bjorn, what app do you use for temperature monitoring?
It is "Car Scanner ELM OBD2".
@@EV_OBD and what app is in your phone?

MC Hammer in the winter but with the 200kW update
Compare it against itself, would be amazing
