  • Te Papa has a new colossal squid!
Watch highlights from the colossal squid examination as specialists in squid biology from Auckland University of Technology undertake research on this rare find. This colossal squid and the specimen already on display at Te Papa are the only two of their kind caught intact - ever! Large colossal squid specimens in good condition are rarely available to scientists, so this latest example has caused great excitement.

I watched this as a live broadcast! They cut this down well 'cuz I remember they had a hell of a time thawing the thing and kinda scrambling for filler.
A couple years ago I found the group chat of some friends I got to watch this with me, which was mainly 20 minutes of stuff like "Dude! Just show the squid already!" and "OMG! you're interviewing a whole nother person now?!" before most of em lost interest.
Me and the other guy left watching lit that chat up when they pulled the beak out though! (the moment @ 5:45). I remember being so amazed and setting a crappy screenshot of the moment as my desktop background for awhile afterwards.
Thanks for the memories RUclips ;D

Very unfortunate the squid died, but it's great we got to analyze it. Sea creatures are some of the most intricate, beautiful, diverse organisms we've discovered, and it's great to have an understanding and respect for them.

Tim krown Are you fucking stupid? Ofcourse they wouldn't kill a colossal squid, the colossal squid has never been sited in it's natural enviroment, meaning, we've only seen it floating on the surface or washed up on a beach dead.

If you watch the video, it explains precisely how this specimen was obtained, which was purely by accident. It was caught on a long line after trying to remove a fish already hooked. By the time it was brought to the surface, it was already dying. The skipper said the squid showed signs that it was attacked by other fish as it was feeding on fish on the line. A previous specimen was caught by this same skipper, also accidentally.

Imagine if you were alone at midnight, in the middle of the sea, scuba diving with a flashlight bright enough to see a good distance under the water, and the water's decently warm. It's comfortable. But you feel a cold, slick touch gliding against the length of your back. You turn around with your flashlight and the only thing you can see in your line of vision is a red mass, then it opens its eye. You're looking into the depths of its eye, the eye as big as a basketball.

Very interesting. Thank you for sharing this. Unfortunately, here in the US, universities hide away discoveries like this for many years from public view until they get their findings published, and then they often greedily refuse others from access from specimen examination. This despite public universities receiving on average 37% of their funding with taxpayer money.

If it was on the end of a fishing line/net there's no way he could have known the squid was on there, probably just thought he had a big catch. How could he save it if its already at the surface? those sorts of squid are supposed to stay deep in the ocean where the pressure can support its body, once its at the surface its too late.

bro the squid was stubborn it didn't want to let go of the toothfish (which was already caught by the line) and let itself get dragged to the surface all the while other fish were nipping at it's flesh, so in conclusion, both of them, the squid, and the crew didn't know they had a colossal squid on their line

it was most likely already dead as for hunting colossal squids is probably illegal. Most giant and colossal squids found are usually dead or dying

I think the fisherman said it was dying from being attacked by other creatures or something like that. But yeah that would be neat to see what it did before it ended up inside the belly of a sperm whale.

It died when it was brought to the surface because it can’t cope with the pressure change

How do they know it travels face-forward and with its tentacles pointing up?

    • @67IronWhalE
      @67IronWhalE 7 лет назад +2

they travel in both direction, squid's siphon that used to help propelling itself can point multiple direction. When they face forward is the only time the colossal squid is spotted, which is easy for squid to swim. if they want to just pump the water out, they'd pump to the another direction all at once from their stomach.

You make a very good point. Sometimes I wonder why people like you aren't in charge of shit like this this instead of the dumb broad making baseless assumptions about how squid move underwater (sarcasm)

close relatives of the colossal squid swim like the arms pointing up, so the colossal squid most likely did too
