Hey guys small edit! In the video I said Fernet uses 17% of the world’s Saffron but it’s actually a whopping 75% which is pretty amazing and unbelievable!
I used Saffron in a Spanish Albariño vermouth recently. Really starting to love the flavor. I really need to pick up a bottle of Fernet. You've got my hopes high
Man, round of applause for this episode. The concept and recipes are so good, that it contained a bartender who doesn't drink, and a taster who has the palate of a 6 year old and I still watched the whole thing. Bravo
"When you say cough syrup, nobody is gonna think that's good". Meanwhile, Islay whisky drinkers: "Mmh, this is amazing - tastes like burnt rubber, tar, band aids and decaying crustaceans".
Loved the spontaneous and unbiased analysis of Marius, it gives a better picture of what a non professional bartender AKA "client" should find in cocktails.
You know what, after finishing this video, I really like Marius' tasting notes. We're not all as perceptive and sophisticated as Leandro's palette, and I felt that Marius could be an objective taster that is closer to us, mere mortals. 😅 That is not to say that Leandro's tasting notes aren't more important to hear in the other videos, because I do look for his professional guidance in understanding the subtle differences in aromas and flavors. But hearing Marius' reactions, PARTICULARLY for Fernet Branca cocktails, was really perfect! Thank you both! ❤
I have just made the first one from this video, "Follow the black rabbit", and I really like it! I put only 0.5 instead of 0.75 oz Fernet (because Marius made me worried that it will taste too much like cough syrup 😂), but it's really good!!! And I squeezed fresh orange juice and lemon juice, which obviously improves it greatly. Thank you, Leandro and Marius!
this is perfect, because it's your average person trying cocktails. when i serve fernet to friends, they say that's disgusting. when i serve fernet to me, i say thats wonderful
Would be fun to hear Marius’ take going forward. First the drink is described as “Eww” and “like a foot” and then Leandro chimes in with “I taste cardamom and bitter cherry and a hint of pineapple.”
Marius is fantastic, always love when he is actively involved in videos. It is cool knowing a fellow Norwegian works with such a great channel. keep it up guys :)))
To me the black rabbit opens up very citrusy from the gin, orange, and lemon; has a nice warm sweetness from the maple, which transforms into an herbaceous finish which plays well with the orange. The minty nature of the fernet surprisingly doesn’t clash with how orangey the drink is at all, and the maple flavor is hard to pick out from behind the bold fernet. It has me interested in using maple with fernet more often.
How lovely to see Marius in this video! I don't think I've ever seen him go in fron of the camera! That's so nice to finally see the face behind the director's voice. 😊
This was a really great video! Ive been racking my brain on how to use fernet branca in a cocktail where the fernet doens not overpower the other ingredients. I tried making the midnight stinger and it was wonderful, i did not have any mint on hand so i used a lemon peel and it really helped bring out the lemon juice in the cocktail. Definitely on my top 5 list of TEB videos. Keep up the videos, you guys are making great content!
My friend got me hooked on fernet and coke. He grew up on it in Argentina. It oddly reminds me of my grandpa smothering me with Vicks vapor rub. Never tell grandpa you don't feel good.
I have been acquiring a taste for Fernet Branca for several years. So far, I've used most of what I've bought to make Toronto cocktails with Fernet Branca and maple syrup. This video will broaden my Fernet repertoire.
My favorite video yet - I think we need a session to see just how pissed Marius can make Leandro…the banter is priceless…especially with Leandro losing all editorial control here. That said, I’m making all of these drinks and they seem bomb!
Love how on the 3rd one Leandro said "I'm not going to tell you what you should taste" but on the Midnight Stinger he just couldn't help but give expected exact taste profile with every detail of what he should taste 😂😂😂 so funny!
Made the Follow that Black Rabbit and forgot the lemon juice. Got some REALLY weird thickness to it, but adding the lemon really drew it back together into a drink that feels like menthol... Hard to describe. I like it.
Hilariously timely. Just bought my first bottle of this yesterday. Tasted it, and was like ‘….and……….back of the shelf. The VERY back of the shelf. Alas, new inspiration.
this was great to see the interactions between you and Marius. Fernet is one of those Amaros that takes some getting used to. And these are three great examples of ways to use it :)
I personally think fernet tastes like listerine. It is good in cocktails but I can totally see that drink tasting like orange cough syrup 😋 I just picked up a bottle a couple days ago and a bottle of chinola. The first cocktail I made with them was delicious. Found it online .75oz chinola, 1 oz Havana club, 1 oz 3 star plantation, 1 oz lime juice, 1 oz simple syrup, 8 mint leaves and a .25 oz float of fernet branca. Smack the mint leaves and throw in a Collins glass. Shake all the rest but the fernet float. Top with lots of ice. It was so good I had 2.
The most iconic and relevant Fernet cocktail is Fernet and coke or “Fernando”, so much soo, that 80% of the fernet produced in the world is consumed in Argentina, home of the fernet and coke.
My fave Fernet-using session drink: Can of cola Juice of one lime .25 oz Fernet 1.5 oz of Demerara rum Up the Fernet if you feel like it. It’s a rum and coke with the lime and Fernet cutting the sweetness.
I havnt tried it in a cocktail yet but tasting it with my guests as they suffer through it has begun to give me a better appreciation for it. I always warn them before hand but they have no idea what is in store.
One of my favorite Fernet cocktails was one we had at work: a Fernet Painkiller! It had a bourbon/rye mix, fernet, pineapple juice, OJ, and cream of coconut. The spiciness of the rye and Fernet was mellowed out by the creaminess of the coconut and gave the drink a warm winter kind of flavor and feeling.
@@jamesstockley3103 if I remember correctly (and it's been a while) it was something along the lines of: .75 Oz Rye .75 Oz bourbon .25 Oz Fernet 1.25 Oz pineapple juice 1.25 Oz Fresh OJ 1.25 Oz house Cream of Coconut
The Midnight Snack is wonderful! My favorite Fernet Branca drink is just 1/2 oz demerara syrup, 1 oz Fernet Branca, drank as a digestive. To me it tastes like a Recola Cough Drop which I also find delicious.
Excellent!!! In Argentina for us, fernet its the national drink and theres a huge cult around him, but we drinking with coke mostly also theres an old one called FERROVIARIO (sweet vermouth, club soda and fernet)
You guys had me cracking up 🤣 over your friends taste 👅 testing fernet cocktails especially the last one he tried, that you forgot the sea salt 🧂 in. Great video cannot wait to try them! Thank you!
Hi Leandro, I must have noted this recipe when you posted it, but I have just made one for my oldest son and one for myself. It is beautifully refreshing and flavoursome. I used Warners Rhubarb gin in it and that may have enhanced the alround taste. Follow the white rabbit will be a repeated drink as long as I have a bottle & half of Fernet Branca left. Nick from York
Enjoyed the honest reaction from Marius - awesome! Some things taste good and others not so much. I’m of the opinion - if you have to develop a taste for something I’ll pass for something else I like right away. Life’s short! Great video !
You are best bartender chef and lecturer I have come across, such long explanations with great content, 👍, I watch Steve, you and Tipsy..that's my menu before parties or having time with friends..Thanks for coming across.. You are from Australia too?
I really enjoy Fernet Branca! Isn't "Amaro" fabulous by Brad Parsons? It is one of the best books I have read. I love discerning the flavours in Fernet. It took a short while of gradually getting used to the many flavours in this wonderful amaro. Bitter and herbaceous have taken over for my spirits of choice. It is so interesting how the palette evolves! Terrific show Leondro!!
I know, I am late to the party, but I had to throw in my Fernet thing. Industry Sours are a regular for me at home, and I could not imagine life without them.
According to an interview with one of the founder's descendant, Fernet Branca consumes not seventeen, but SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT of all saffron produced annually. Which is pretty unbelievable when you think about it. I'd love to see the actual numbers.
I had never heard of fernet until I tried a cocktail from Wholly Smokin' BBQ in Florence, South Carolina, called "The Swamp Fox." Its bourbon, fernet, lemongrass, and ginger. Best cocktail I have ever had. See if you can get that recipe!
I love fernet branca, so watching Marius be like "nah, fam" broke my heart a little. I've been loving the very straightforward (and bitter) 50% fernet branca, 50% campari "Ferrari" (served either in a tall glass with lots of ice or wicked cold in a coupe)
Recently went to a bar that had a martini with fernet branca. That drink was incredible. From the menu I rememeber it had: gin, sweat vermouth, fernet, orange juice and probably something else too.
Leandro, how long does Fernet last after being opened? Also, there is a great recipe for a spritz cocktail called Safe Passage (created by Keneniah Bystrom) that calls for Amaro Nardini, which I sub'd with Fernet, served up in a coupe and garnished with Castelvetrano olives: 1oz Amaro Nardini 1/4 oz Aperol 1/4 oz fresh lemon juice 1/4 oz olive brine 2 1/2 oz Prosecco
I knew you would say that, Marius. You're wrong of course but brilliant answer! Good to see you in the vid, not just hear you. Du ser veldig norsk ut også, det er bra! :)
Hey I really liked the short cutaways for each ingredient, like we didn't have to watch you squeeze the orange like other channels do, we get the point haha
That Harry’s midnight snack sounds amazing! I’m working on a coconut/ cola/ fernet drink myself. I’m not bad ass enough to drink fernet straight, but I do like it in cocktails. I’ll be trying these ones out for sure.
finally a justification for the amount of fernet we drink at work in the industry lmao i always buy people shots of it at the end of a night while I close up a bar if they're stuck around. wakes ya up right away.
Hey Leandro, what's up?? try to male Macunaíma, it's a Brazilian classic, that is so good, one of my favourites!! 45ml aged cachaça 22,5ml lime juice 15ml simple syrup 7ml fernet branca we serve in a specific small glass, but u can serve in a cocktail glass, try it, it's amazing!!
Love Marius tastings! His reaction is genuinely how I feel every time I try to love a drink with Fernet Branca - it tastes like cough syrup!!! WHY do we keep trying to love this horrific stuff?!
So I just made follow the black rabbit tonight. My notes: first, I’m note crazy about the color; 2: the drink has a dry honeysuckle flavor with some berry, sour notes. 3 fernet is subdued by the maple syrup, orange and lemon, however it comes out at the back of the palate. Overall, i think it’s unbalanced, but it has very complex flavors. Every sip is different, which I love. It’s an exciting drink, definitely for the more refined palate. Overall - it’s good! I will make it again.
Its not really just because he is 'stubborn' but he hasn't built his pallete up for it. It takes time and experience for most people to build their pallete for tasting especially without context.
Hey guys small edit! In the video I said Fernet uses 17% of the world’s Saffron but it’s actually a whopping 75% which is pretty amazing and unbelievable!
In the LA area and very interested in working on my tasting. If you're open and not inundated with other requests I'd love to join in.
Maybe 75% of export but it's cheaper in Iran so they probably use a lot of it
Would love to know more about fernet, we drink so much of it behind the bar but it’s just a black sheep
I used Saffron in a Spanish Albariño vermouth recently. Really starting to love the flavor. I really need to pick up a bottle of Fernet. You've got my hopes high
I think these drinks were originally medicinal not necessarily recreational, maybe more insight on that?
Pretty cool that you got Tony Hawk on as a guest taster. And to his credit, orange cough syrup is the best tasting cough syrup.
"Do a kickflip!"
Disagree! Grape Delsym is my favorite flavor of cough syrup.
That's who Marius looks like! I was blanking.
@@nslayton5 don't let Tony Hawk ever catch you blanking on who he is!
