In Argentina not only we use a 2L Coke bottle, but also 3L ones, for more pleasure. The classic way of making it, is first pouring the fernet over ice, after that the coke, and if you end up with a lot of foam, a few dashes of fernet on top.

thank you so much for this video. I was studying abroad in Argentina this semester, where I fell in love with Fernet and Fernet & Coke. I was sent home to the US early a couple days ago due to closing borders, and this video put a smile on my face!

Nick: "So today, we're going to be covering Fernet and Coke. People from Argentina: "Hello." But seriously, you make great videos. Keep making them as long as you can. Sincerely, someone who isn't even legally allowed to drink yet.
Hey Nick! As a Fernet-lover Argentinian just a heads up for everyone: The way coke is made varies from country to country, and in some cases the flavor really changes. Just wanna let you know this if you travel and notice that fernet & coke in Argentina isn't the same as in the UK or Germany Or China. Otherwise keep up the great content, its always helpful for rookies bartenders as myself.
Also, the Fernet-Branca and the Branca Menta in Argentina taste differently than the Italian version. Argentina has its own Branca distillery. Side by side, the Argentine fernet is less astringent and the Argentine Menta is a deep green and a bit more bitter and less syrupy
In Slovakia and Czech Republic Fernet is really popular and is literally everywhere and also drank with cola, nice to know you at least have one Czech-Slovak Fernet in this video, soundies x
I have grown up thinking that the Fernet Stock is the Czech invention and that it doesn't exist anywhere else (except Slovakia). Later I've learned that our fernet is not bad but many of those produced abroad are much better for my tongue.
I'm another argentinian commenting. One fact it's that we have the only other factory/distillery of Fernet Branca in the world outside Italy. And as an amateur bartender i use Branca Menta in a riff of the southside, just a quarter ounce intensifies the mint flavour and turns it a beautiful shade of green.
Hey Nick, as an Argie bartender I can tell you that everyone here drinks Branca. Also you should try it with grapefruit soda, is really good. Stay safe everyone!
We have 11 fernets at the bar I work at, and we utilize it in a lot of our cocktails. You're missing my favorite, though! Letherbee fernet from Chicago. Very rich, with notes of eucalyptus, black tea tannins, and a bitter bite that balances against unaged spirits in cocktails well.
I'm from Prague (Czech Rep.) and R. Jelinek is definitely not a respected still here. It's the McDonald's of booze, tourists and broke teens by it. If you want a Fernet that's representative of Czech taste, try Fernet Stock from the still in Božkov founded in 1873, back when we were part of the Austo-Hungarian Empire. Good luck :)
It's so funny to me that drinks that are overwhelmingly popular in some places are very unpopular or at least considered niche or unpalatable in other places. How in the world did fernet take off so well in Argentina? It tastes like medicine. Then again, how in the world did root beer take off in the US? It tastes like medicine. And yet I like both of them. Should I just be drinking cough syrup?
We are mostly of italian descent, so that explains how fernet got here on the first place, but we've to thank the cordobeses (an argentinian province) for mixing it with cola and making it famous everywhere here
Since just about all liquors and sodas are derived from some kind of medicinal herbal combination. Pretty much. Yes. It's a really fun dig into drink history and you can then find some ways to make your own. Wild Cherry bark soda or Birch Beer or sasparilla. I've learned in the past year, that there's some herbal medicines that work well, including some odd thing called Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa which goes well with a rye whiskey.
Niiice!!! So cool that you released this videos today. Un Argentina we just began our quarantine. And for those who love fernet this is very special. Stay safe, stay healthy
I love these types of videos, I've never really looked into Fernets before. Disregarding the one outlier, how interchangeable are these in mixed drinks? I'd love to see a video about different types of Amaro too, what are very similar to others, what are some unique ones, what common drinks they are in, anything like that. You probably need a month or two to recover after drinking all that Fernet, though...
You should def get the Amaro book, it'll give you way more insight beyond my videos. The challenge with this category is that it's not really standardized like other spirits. For example in this video, that Czech fernet is such an outlier, I'd hesitate to even call it a fernet. Most mixed drinks you see with fernet will be optimizing for Fernet Branca
I'm Branca Menta all day, it's my go-to shot around town. Between some other folks in the neighborhood, we'd drink through a few different bars' stock through the week. Algorithm
great video but Fernet con Coca (as we call it in Argentina) is done the other way round!! you put the ice first, then 30% Fernet and then 70% coke. You should also aim for some foam (~3 cm)

I have a local (Western North Carolina) fernet that's made with Appalachian wildflowers, it's too strong for me to sip but makes an amazing fernet and coke! I use about an ounce or an ounce-and-a-half in a glass of coke and you can really taste the flowers.
I did not expect it hehe, the fernet with coca cola is the most popular and iconic combination that we have in Córdoba, my province (central Argentina). Greetings people, just try it, all those who prepare it have their own soft drink / drink ratio, I prefer it to be "soft" (30 fernet, 70 coke)
Great video! Branca Menta isn’t a ferntet due to the sugar content but it is mega delicious! You should try shaking it with a double espresso, it’s crazy delicious!!!
Fernet-Branca was my mother's milk. While pregnant with me and for many years after, she'd occasionally take a shot glass sized hit often with a good splash of 7Up mixed in to settle her stomach. As I grew older I'd make it for her until she quit drinking it when I was about 14 - 15. I never could stand the taste of it.
Nice video man!! In Argentina, Branca Menta is considered "the begginers Fernet". We drink it with sprite or tonic water and you can up the ratio a little bit, say 60-40. I wish we could get are hands on some of the other fernets you tried. And yes, I wrote this comment before the video ended :)
Nice deep dive into fernet. Also can't forget we get Branca Menta in part because Maria Callas liked to drink her Fernet with added sugar and mint I believe. Apocryphal or not need to give La Divina a shout. :)
Townshend's in Portland (mostly know for their tea and kombucha) makes a totally decent fernet with local ingredients like "Douglas fir, Willamette Hops, and birch bark."
I love branca menta but here in argentina its not so loved, and yes try it with sprite its really good, here if you mix it with coke its look frowned upon but I enjoy it with coke aswell
Fun video, loved watching this tasting! Thanks for sharing! I *really* don't have a palate for fernet, yet have somehow accumulated quite a collection of different fernets as well. I really like that Fernet Leopold, and another one to consider trying is the Geijer California Fernet (also made locally in the Bay Area) - it's a bit of a Scandinavian-inspired twist on fernet, with lots of warm baking spices and ultra mild relative to most others. I also tried the Letherbee fernet (from Chicago) on some occasion and recalled that also being very approachably enjoyable and mild. I guess I gotta pick up the fernet&coke habit otherwise there is no way I'm going to finish all these bottles haha.
Easily the best Branca Menta drink is a Good Night, Irene, which is Branca Menta and Bourbon, shaken with ice and strained into an ice filled glass. Hell of a nightcap.
Great branca menta cocktail that a very soused bartender made for us in Dayton, OH and we have since replicated: the Iced Irish C-Note. 3 oz cold brew coffee, 1.5 oz Irish whiskey (though if you only have bourbon or rye on hand you’ll do ok), 0.5 oz Fernet Branca Menta, optional .25 oz or barspoon or two of 1:1 simple syrup. Stir over ice then strain into a glass with a big rock in it. Haven’t tried it but it’s occurring to me it could be nice with a float of cream or a sprig of mint for garnish.

I've never mixed Fernet with anything I always drink it straight. The only thing other than just drink it is to take the menta add a dash of chocolate bitters.
i like to use fernet to make a highball my grandpa used to drink. in a tall glass with ice: 2 oz sweet vermouth (here in argentina you can find martini, cinzano or carpano) 1/4 oz fernet (or 1/2 if you prefer more bitter punch) i'm not a branca fundamentalist anylike most people around here top up with soda (preferably from a siphon). cheers.

Super helpful video. For those looking for the Fred Jerbis in the Bay Area, they have it at Cask. K&L has a lot of their other products, and at generally better prices than Cask, but only Cask has the Jerbis Fernet!
@@CocktailChemistry That's what I figured. It's not at Bitters and Bottles or Total Wine, the other two sources I commonly check (and my main go-to stores). I was about to ask you where it came from until I checked Cask ;-)
Sadly, none of those except for the Fermet Branca and Fermet Menta are available here in Florida. I enjoy a small shot of Branca after a meal, and really like the Menta with either CokeZero or Diet Sprite, but it also works with Mountain Dew surprisingly. Seems like I'd have to go to Cali to get the Fred Jerbis brand... :(
I like fernet and enjoyed watching this video, so I bought 3 new fernet's to try myself. First of all the Fred Jerbis is excellent, very sweet, smooth with a subtle bitter undertone which rounds it off perfectly. The second one I bought is California Fernet by Geijer Glogg, it's sweet as well with a pleasant cinnamon flavor, like a mix between a smooth fernet and fireball. The last one I got is the Leopold. You sold me on the weed flavor and all the 25 botanicals and heavy mint, but it is so bitter!! I can't drink it. It's almost undrinkable imo and I drink a lot of classic Fernet-Branca. Please do more spirit category tasting videos! ;)
I enjoyed this installment quite a lot. In Atlanta, I find it difficult to find Fernets on the store shelves other than Branca. Did you special order these or does SF have a better retail scene? A couple bars have more options, but not retail.
Loved the vid, I love the exploring new types of booze. For some reason your videos disappeared from my feed for a while. I guess that just means I have a lot of catching up to do!
I'd strongly recommend you take a look at some Toronto recipes now that you've got a whole host of fernet to draw from. Spectacular cocktail, far too unknown I think.
As an argentinian, not very fond of Fernet. Will drink out of the cut up 2L bottle tho. Its a social thing for me, really cool to drink with some friends!!
In my opinion, Coca-Cola made with cane sugar has less bite than that made with high fructose corn syrup. Maybe the sweeter fernets would fair better mixing with HFCS Coke?
In Argentina not only we use a 2L Coke bottle, but also 3L ones, for more pleasure.

Okey I need to know this befor mothersday wich fernet is the closest to the luxardo fernet because I’m gonna make your Cuba Libre for my mother
I'm in Brazil, more specifically at the North, and I just CAN'T find any Fernet... I have Averna, though. Is it a good replacement?
Please do more spirit category tasting videos! ;)
More of these videos please.
I enjoyed this installment quite a lot. In Atlanta, I find it difficult to find Fernets on the store shelves other than Branca. Did you special order these or does SF have a better retail scene? A couple bars have more options, but not retail.
very fortunate to have lots of great retail outlets here. Got all these in SF
I legit thought you grew a massive beard based on the thumbnail, then I realized it was the top of your head lol
You should know that the fernet branca from Italy is sweeter than the one made in Argentina which is the one you should use for fernet and coke.
I cant believe you just said quesadilla like that... thats like saying GIF instead of GIF!
You should try Amaro Montenegro sometimes
got some, great entry level amaro
Fernet Branca over ice cream is fantastic.
This is great. There are probably 10 more fernets out there you haven't tried!
Do you need to refrigerate this after opening?
Quesadilla looks yummy. Maybe I'll make one for lunch. But I don't have any hot sauce...
You make me feel like i am getting knowledgeable on spiritis. I probably still know barely anything but i feel classy just watching
