I have traveled most of the coasts of Europe in a Suzuki Samurai offroad machine, camped in my tent, and seen incredible places. The small vehicle allowed me to get into very tiny trails and find routes only accessible from the water. But it is a struggle to setup camp and always depend on that to eat and sleep.
When I moved to Canada I sold my Samurai, after owning it for 10 years, and bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee, build it out for Overlanding with a rooftop tent, and found it nice but not great. Again, a lot of setup time if you want a bit more space and coverage.
I have always offroaded in difficult terrains and I never wanted to give that up, so 4x4 is a must.
Then I bought my first Delica L400, fully built it up and felt in love. True 4x4, the advantage of a small van, the opportunity of stopping and sleeping and cooking with basically zero setup time.
For different reasons I sold that and bought a brand new Wrangler JL that I crushed at 3000km. Then bought another one with the insurance money.
I sold it after very little time because it was way too small. My camera gear and my German Sheperd Dog would already take too much space.
I bought another Delica L400, build it up again and I never looked back.
Van life is great, the setup time is none and if you have a proper 4x4 system you can pretty much go anywhere.
I am planning to get a bigger van, but it will be a 4x4 conversion since not the new sprinters nor the new AWD transits are really 4x4 vehicles. That said, the new AWD systems are pretty good and they will bring you in most places.
Overlanding is reaching the place without breaking stuff, so the goal is not to pass over the hardest obstacle, is to reach the destination and enjoy it, ready for the next one.

Our needs to achieve our own individual inner peace are different from everyone else’s. When I was younger, the trails, 4x4 backroads and climbing waterfalls were my happy places. Fewer people, less stress and a greater sense of freedom. The need to be out there is still just a strong but life for me has changed so now I am designing a van. My knees are going and my back is gone. I just can’t do anymore rock climbing or Foresty Forrest summits. I’ll continue expanding my personal growth but it’s taking a different path now. I won’t miss the freedom of my youth because I’ll still have had it. If you can have both, take them both. If you can’t, I’m sure you will continue along your own path that suites your own inner happy place. Happy trails and cheers from Vancouver eh!

For an Overlanding vehicle, a Ford E350 with 4wd added. Some have poptop roofs. Some have hard extended roofs like the B190. The Hard roofs stay tall and make it difficult to get places under tree branches. The poptop/sportsmobile style can be raised and lowered at campsite. And most have a rear bench to sleep on while traveling. And yes, the 4wd on them is top notch. If you get a diesel one you set up a diesel heater also.
    I have a 2008 Ford E350 4x4 Diesel and a 2003 Sprinter 2wd Diesel. Sprinter gets 23mpg. E350 gets 15mpg. Hiway. But the E350 can camp in a lot funner places.

I’ve looked at and test drove a few Canadian made Class B RV- almost bought a Pleasure Way Sprinter last summer. But before I get into debt, I thought I should rent one to see if the lifestyle even suits me. And so we rented a Class B RV last August We drove all over BC and parts of Alberta- we had a blast! ! It does have its pros and cons. The beauty about a Class B is you can park anywhere when you get road weary. Driving them around small towns when you have to replenish your provisions is fine but finding a parking spot could be a challenge. Lots of camping convenience for sure but very limited for off-road adventures. I ordered a ‘21 4R TRD pro and can’t wait to try roughing it up in the wilderness on our next trip. 😁✌️🇨🇦

@@OverlandLady I’ve decided to go with a 4WD as I couldn’t wrap my brain around dropping $160K + modes on an Class B RV. For some folks that’s peanuts but you can travel the world and perhaps not spend that insane amount… far easier to ship a mid-size 4WD overseas than a Class B. ✌️

There is no do-it-all vehicle, I've been through a lot of vehicle types trying to find the best fit for me. In short, I have two...a 22 year old Toyota 4Runner that I use for "overlanding", and a 2WD Sprinter van I built myself and documented on my channel. I spend probably 90% of my nights in the Sprinter as it gets 24 miles per gallon on diesel, has all the comforts you mentioned and can go most places even though it's 2WD. Having the cab and living area connected is huge for security and being able to sleep most anywhere while in-transit.
The 4Runner uses way more fuel, doesn't have the comforts, but will get farther away from people. I find the height of the van to be the biggest limiting factor off-road, not the lack of 4x4. Perhaps pick something like a 4x4 Delica that will offer a way better 4x4 system than the Sprinter, is smaller and more maneuverable and won't set you back close to $70k just for the van.

Your van most likely longer than your truck and not to much wider, so when you negotiate a turn just go slightly further than you would your truck.
It’s good to adjust your passenger mirror view of the other lane just enough for you to see the traffic lines on the road next to you to see if your van is within your lane, and the horizon in your mirror should be just about mid height of your mirror, with these tips you should be able to get use to feel more easier to drive.

I understand your dilemma. My wife and I are currently doing weekend backroad touring in a Toyota Prado 4WD, relying on a two person tent for most seasons, but looking for a more comfortable solution for wet, winter weather - the tent itself is ok but the backup of wet gear is a pain. I have been looking at a 4WD camper but as I also run 4WD trips for the local 4WD club, I need my4WD and don't want another vehicle. I am thinking of a small caravan (eg a tear-drop or similar) that I can toughen up so so that we can take reasonably serious tracks getting to our camp site, but can also easily leave it behind for the exploring days. The van looks nice but is too much money tied up in a vehicle that can only do some of what I want.

I love my Land Rover, but I've probably still spent more time sleeping in a converted Sprinter van. The ability to overnight easily in populated areas since you don't have to even go outside, have an inside toilet, and just SO MUCH SPACE is pretty sweet. The Rover will take me places the Sprinter can't go, but even an RWD Sprinter will go down surprisingly small roads. If the Sprinter was 4WD and had just a bit more clearance and bit more character then there would be no competition.

Van life been more spacious has its pros but, I just don't think they offer the same remote destination flexibility you get in a 4wd vehicle with good off road capability. Perhaps for a traveler sure, but you do like to get away in those unusual as places and they are sometimes the best places to be.

It's not hard to see the appeal of those Vans they are awesome but there's something to being able to go anywhere you want in an overland style vehicle that nothing else can replace.

Do we need a commercial license to make monitized youtube videos with drone footage?

    • @OverlandLady

      Nop. Just normal drivers license

@@OverlandLady no I mean...if you use drone footage to make money on youtube, do you need an FAA small UAS part 107 license?

Yes, in the US, the footage has to be shot by a person with a commerical license. Monique (Overland Lady) is in Canada, so the laws are different.

@@mixflipYou are correct. In the U.S. you must have a part 107 if you're making money with your drone footage.

Thongs a.k.a. but floss is a sexy undergarment or bikini bottom.

      @PiesAndPasties 3 года назад

@@J.Young808 M8. I have been calling them thongs since before you kids were born. They came to Australia from Japan after WW2. Japanese safety boots was another name that was used. They ARE thongs. That's what the word thong means. The bit of leather /rubber/ plastic that goes between the toes and holds the shoe to your foot.
