  • TRIGGER WARNING for some pretty heavy and frank discussions about mental illness and all the dark serious stuff that comes with it.
    Here's a playlist of songs inspired by this video: open.spotify.com/playlist/15H...
    The song featured at the end of the video is TEETH by St. Terrible, which you can find in the playlist above. Thanks to the band for supplying me with an instrumental mix to use. St. Terrible is one of my favorite bands ever and you should listen to them.
    This topic has always been something that really bothered me and I'm finally getting around to why I think this gesture is not healthy, a bit toxic, and kinda needs to be addressed seriously.
    I'm a huge fan of bands like Twenty One Pilots, My Chemical Romance, the Used, Motion City Soundtrack, and tons of other artists who explore heavier topics in their lyrics and messaging. However, with them comes a type of fan that tends to go overboard with their adoration of the project. While there's a humanity in the claim that a band "saved someone's life," I think it's misguided. What makes me worried is that it's mostly teenagers with this mentality.
    At the end of the day, you are your own hero and the fact that you're here watching this video and reading these words are proof enough. You owe it to yourself to give credit where it's due, and that's not to anyone but yourself. You're awesome.
    I'll make less existentially terrifying videos soon I promise, I just needed to talk about this. It's been bugging me for months.
    I hope you're doing well. You know what phone numbers to call and what people to talk to if things are in crisis mode right now.
    0:00 - Intro
    1:07 - You Are the Only One Responsible For Yourself
    3:35 - Don't Build Foundations of Stability on Strangers
    4:27 - Don't Make It Weird Bro
    6:25 - You Deserve All Credit

    Howdy! A few things real quick:
    -This video covers a touchy topic. Approach it with caution and heed the trigger warning. It might be smart to finish the video before commenting, as well.
    -I know it can come across as dismissive and pandering, but the mental crisis hotline is fantastic. If things in your life are getting heavy, overwhelming, and dark, you should dial 988. You'll be connected to someone whose entire job is to listen to what you have to say and take you seriously. They're volunteers, so they're listening out of compassion and not compensation. Be safe, you're worth protecting.
    -The song at the end is called TEETH by St Terrible. I have a link to it in the description. It's amazing. It is one of the most emotionally potent incredible songs I've ever heard.
    I hope ur doing well! Be safe, be smart, stay spicy, I will see you next week.

    Actually, my favorite band did save my life. I had been getting slammed all night at bars, it had been a long week, and about 2:23 am I decided to tap out after puking up most of my internal organs behind my Toyota Tacoma in the parking lot. I popped in my copy of the Money Store by Death Grips and started the drive home. Naturally about three songs in and I was deep in the bowels of violent and positively delusional psychosis. I was fading in and out of consciousness, and I guess I must've dozed off until later in the album. I was revived by a bass hit so fat and distorted I literally felt my teeth rattle and my eyes vibrate. I quickly realized I was about to be ploughed by a semi, as I was in the left lane and doing about 95. I yanked the wheel 180 degrees and went spiraling into this lousy deli shop attached to a gas station, narrowly avoiding blowing myself to high hell. Honestly, the owner wasn't really that upset, apparently the business had been going under. So... shout out to Death Grips, I guess.

    Pete Wentz said something that responded pretty well to someone who hollered this phrase. He said you are the one driving the car that is your life, you might just need help getting some gas and they are happy to help, but it’s all you that saves you. It’s a paraphrase from his saying at the Somerset show this tour.

    Posting on an alt for this one, but when I say that Tyler, the Creator "Saved my life" I'm not saying he prevented me from s*icide, but rather he inspired me to completely change who I was, my mannerisms, confidence, and general outlook on people and life. I used to be a very unhealthy and toxic person physically and mentally, but when I first listened to Wolf it became my entire personality. As stupid as it sounds that album is a big reason I'm into making music and doing BMX. His album IGOR helped me perceive others for who they are and that being yourself/themselves is okay. When I say he "Saved my life" I mean he saved me from continuing to be an awful human being and a greasy loser. I at no point will claim that music saved me from s*icide.

    I'm glad to see someone finally talk about the whole "your music saved my life" thing. Because only the individual can make the choice to keep going. Music is only a small bit of motivation towards your own existence. You yourself are the only person who can keep yourself going. I know a lot of artists have talked about the distance between artists and the audience and have talked about how heavy that feeling of responsibility towards a random person can be. And I don't think a lot of people realize that. Never discredit all the effort you yourself put in to keep going by saying that a single song or band caused you to make the decision to keep going

    Had I watched this video as a teen, I would’ve definetely written something immature and cringe in this comment section.
    However watching this as an adult I couldn’t agree more with your arguments. And like you said, yes we can get external help (I.e medication, therapy etc.) but only if WE take the initiative.
    It really is ”A little less Your Music Saved My Life, A little more Your Music Helped Making My Low Points More Bearable”

  • @puddingwars-

    As someone who’s autistic, a musician, and has a special interest in music as a whole. I can understand this sentiment but for me music is apart of me, it’s a interest that is intrinsically tied to myself. Wether that be listening to music, playing an instrument, performing, ect. Music for me has kept me motivated to get myself out of my dark depressive state. My music classes in school were a lot of times the reasons I’d go to school. Despite the relentless bullying I faced. So to me music didn’t necessarily save my life, it’s more that it’s apart of my life and my identity and it gives me the motivation to keep going. I totally agree with the fact only you can save yourself. But I still think it’s important to acknowledge and recognize that music can have a profound impact on someone so they can save themselves. Personally for me instead of saying “Movements music saved my life”. I’ll just say “Movements music helped motivate me to get the help I needed”.
    No hate to you Nate, this is just my thoughts and personal experiences.

    This is JUST like when friends will thank me for saving their life or helping them with a situation. Sometimes I do believe I have genuinely given them assistance that they couldn’t have given themselves.
    …However, I always tell them *they* did it themselves- because they did. I echo the sentiment you provided in this video because nobody can save someone unwilling to save themselves. My friends should be proud of themselves and confident in their abilities to manage their emotions because if and when I’m not there, they should know that they are capable of going on.

I recently read the big three of seinen (Berserk, Vagabond, Vinland Saga) and that experience really motivated me to become a better and kinder person. They didn't literally change me, I had to make that choice myself. But I am extremely grateful that they gave me that final push into changing for the better.

    I just got out of a very rocky relationship (4 1/2 years) of my partner constantly needing me and using only me as a clutch for his mental conditions and his problems (we go together only 2 months after his mom passed in his arms). When I tried helping him (I'm 16 rn.) by recommending him talk to his family, friends, and possibly a therapist (he could afford and was able to go) he refused and continued to put that pressure of needing me as a clutch. I cant exactly feel how these artists feel but I can understand how it can be so stressfull to carry the thought of someone no offing themselves all because you sang. The weight of that is hurtfull and can be harming, even when its not that direct.

    Thank you for a wonderful video. These things are said with the sweetest intentions but I don’t often think people convey what they mean very well.
    Ive considered hurting myself or even deciding to end my life a few times. But there were a few key moments from bands and other influencers that changed the way I think.
    “Tie a noose around your mind, loose enough to breathe fine and tie it. To a tree and tell it ‘you belong to me’ this ain’t a noose, this is a leash, and I have news for you, you must obey me!” -Holding Onto You by Twenty One Pilots.
    Holy heck did that give me strength. It gave me something I didn’t have at the time: courage to be angry at my situation and demand to myself that I was in control. I had choices to make after hearing that song. It helped me realize that I’m capable of more than I ever thought.
    If I met Tyler and Josh today, I’d tell them “Thank you for your impactful music. You’ve done so much to help me realize I’m not alone and have empowered me. Thank you for being a catalyst to some life changing moments in my life.”
    Because quite frankly, it FEELS like they saved me life. They were a lifeline when I needed it and a valve release on the feelings I had. But I’d never pressure them into thinking they need to make music to save my life. I’d also never equate my being here exclusively to them. There’s more that’s encouraged me to stay alive and keep going than just them, even if they played some big parts.

    This video feels oddly… dismissive of art? Like, I agree with the premise, and heavily agree with parts of the video (like the section about trauma dumping on artists or building your worldview on someone else’s words.)
    But, there’s definitely songs/albums that make arguments against suicide, and I think that’s it’s entirely possible those pieces of art convinced people to change their mind. I’m specifically thinking of Bo Burnham’s Inside, when halfway through the special he just looks flat at the camera and says “Don’t kill yourself. Just don’t.” That struck a profound chord, and I think it’s dismissive of his storytelling ability to say “oh the power was inside you all along.” His art fundamentally changed how I view the topic. “Just don’t.” Sure, he didn’t save my life, but he did change my outlook on life for the better, and I think that’s worth something.

    • @NateIsLame
      @NateIsLame  10 месяцев назад +3

      Art only needs to be profound once, but it’s the person perceiving it who needs to make the choice to put the lessons they learned into practice every day. You are still the one doing all the work and you still deserve all the credit.
      It’s like saying my first grade teacher wrote this video because they taught me how to spell words for the essay.

    Last year, I was at Deftones show in DC and overheard someone screaming at the top of their lungs about how the band's music stopped that person from taking their own life. Not only did it pull me out of the moment for a bit, but I found it very strange and uncomfortable to hear in public.
    There have been many bands that have helped me through hard times or played a pivotal role in my life, but I realized (and still do) that me being alive is of my own accord. Not on the artist. Thanks for putting out this video Nate and I hope more people will take something good out of it!

    first of all: THIS MESSAGE IS SO IMPORTANT, THERE SHOULD BE MORE DISCUSSIONS ON TOPICS LIKE THIS IN COMMUNITIES!!!
    i couldn't agree more with you. yet i still think heavy statements like these can be interpreted in a positive light also, going both ways, giving the artist meaning in their life and a reason to keep going themselves too. but yeah, i hardly agree with you on this for the most part, especially as a huge linkin park fan.
    i think my big realization on this topic came with the tragic death of chester bennington in 2017. their music meant and still means so much to me to this day, but that became the turning point in my life when i had to actually make the conscious choice of separating myself from the fact that this band's music, chester's powerful voice and their lyrics helped me find a more hopeful road in myself to keep going. i remember i was so shocked and confused when the news came. i felt like the ground had been ripped out from below me. i still get chills just thinking about how i felt, as i'm writing this now...
    after this incident, i've been trying to distance myself from a thing like this ever happening to me again. i mean, it's just unhealthy placing so much power of your own wellbeing in the hands of a stranger, even though they made a big impact on you. your life is yours, you make the choices that you make, and it can be a heavy burden to carry on the shoulders for both of you, implying such heavy attachments.

    "You do not need to validate yourself by applying some life saving qualities to some MP3s." True, but FLACs do have life saving qualities.
    In all seriousness, I do understand where people are coming from when they say a band saved their life. I know I've used music to help process difficult emotions and experiences. Like you said though, the songs are not what saved you. I'm still alive because of myself, not because of whatever bands I was listening to when I wanted to die. Personally, I don't want to give some stranger that credit, they don't deserve and they probably don't want it.

    Playing music fills up my brain with stimuli other than suicidal thoughts at my lowest points. Anything that has stopped me from being suicidal during crisis has saved me, whether that’s friends who help me, sleeping so I can’t think anymore, or music so I also can’t think. Being on the spectrum, communication is hard for me, so the option that I fell back on was music to drown out my thoughts. It’s less an active choosing of living, more of me shutting my brain off to anything except the music. I have quite an empty life, so listening to music is the one thing that keeps me grounded. It’s all I have at this point really. If I didn’t have music I’d have to think about my issues and that makes me spiral.

    at the risk of sounding like i agree without considering other viewpoints, yes. a good chunk of the artists and producers whose music and overall brand i became invested in over the years had fanbases who'd often claim that that music saved their lives, and i simply never understood it. often, the music would just bum me out even harder, as i realised there was no chance i'd ever reach their level of technical talent with my current toolset, being an artist and producer myself. and frankly? during this time, i also realised that i'd lock myself into depressive states just so the ordinary world would feel like a relief once i returned to it. - tho this message is coming from a different perspective than the one u presented, as my father was a veteran guitarist and i grew up in a musical household where technicality was valued more than emotion.
    it feels kinda lonely to put all the credit on yourself for staying alive, but there's gotta be a way in which to have community without total codependency, but i don't quite know what that is yet. regardless, thank u 4 putting this message out here.

    • @NateIsLame
      @NateIsLame  10 месяцев назад +1

      I think if owning all of the credit for staying alive feels lonely, I’d wager your best bet is to reach out and enrich others instead of giving credit away to someone else. Volunteering and working with other musicians, finding music oriented community centers to help out, and mentoring folks one on one and looking out for pals is often a great and fulfilling pastime in my experience. c:

    Honestly I never did like saying “you’re music saved me” cause my sis just got me through hard times like MIW, Knocked Loose and PTV and ATL. Since middle school I felt like that they just got through hard times with their music but never really “saved my life”. Cause I never met or knew any of them personally or know at all. It’s just weird putting them on petal stools as well and even Alex from ATL said “we can’t really solve all your problems but we offer you a chance to escape” and i love that cause it’s really true within all the bands I listen to.

    this message might be motivational for some people, but i feel like you are talking a little narrowly from your own point of view. i think the strongest point here is about idolizing specific people when you’re in a bad place, but that isn’t the same as letting music, movies, or any external thing change you. as far as it really all coming from inside, it sounds nice but I just simply don’t agree. think about all the deep conversations you have with friends, or moments when they lift you up from a dark place. if that brought you out of a depression, saying they saved your life would make sense. external things do in fact impact your consciousness. i know a friend who was going on a downward spiral, walked into a bar one night, and heard a well timed piece of advice from a well placed stranger and completely changed their trajectory. so yes they had that power within, but sometimes there needs to be a catalyst for that from the outside, and not everyone is lucky enough to get that catalyst. “you are not strapped to a chair” this could be really helpful to some people (maybe you saying this will be a positive catalyst for some people) but it also is a narrow view on what life threatening places look like for people. some people have sunk to the point of true loneliness with no physical outs. life can have really hard and painful circumstances both psychological and physical. if no one is there to offer physical support to you, you have to turn to something spiritual, and for a lot of people that’s music. this is speaking from personal experience which is why i’m typing all this. people need each other, they need love and ideas and art. do some research into maslows hierarchy of needs being bullshit. if i’m gonna b really strapped in a chair for a long time, i’d rather there be music playing.
    btw-it’s not always about suicide when people say this. it isn’t always this dramatic, sometimes even being pulled out of a mild depression is live saving. and i think a lot of artists know that and aren’t uncomfortable with people saying that, it’s probably a case by case basis. other artists might be happy to be reminded of the importance of there art. because art is extremely important. if feels like you have a specific image of person saying this in mind, but you’re dismissing a lot of other people and the impact that art can have.

    • @NateIsLame
      @NateIsLame  10 месяцев назад

      There is truth to what you are saying, but no matter what, the individual is the one who makes the choice every moment of every day to continue to be alive.
      Even if you hear a special song, heed a specific piece of advice, or have a revelation that puts things into perspective… it’s still you who does the work and implements them every day.
      What I meant with the “you’re not strapped to a chair” bit is that everyone has the capability to end everything at any given time and yet the fact that someone is conscious and watching or reading this is proof that they’ve chosen to stick around up until this point for one reason or another.
      Finding things that remind you why you’re still alive is important, but at the end of the day you’re still the only one in charge of being alive. You still deserve all of the credit, the same way I don’t thank my driving instructor every time I arrive at the store safely.

    • @atlaswinter8134
      @atlaswinter8134 10 месяцев назад +2

      @@NateIsLame I’m just worried your argument is a little closer to jordan peterson “go clean your room” stuff than you might think. people need support and can’t do everything alone. when your so alone you don’t have support, there can be music and art to help add meaning to your life. in school you learn things you never would have, yeah i don’t thank my elementary school teachers every time i calculate a tip from a restaurant, but i learned it somewhere and it didn’t just come from inside. being grateful to your driving instructor, teachers, friends, isn’t saying you have no worth or potential in the first place, it’s acknowledging that people are part of what makes you grow and become the you that has the power to make these decisions. having the right teachers (and art can be a teacher) is instrumental to that. just consider that while this maybe be helpful to some people, phrasing it in such a harsh way demeans the nuance of what the phrase could mean, and this stark individualism might not give a full picture of recovery

      I agree with you entirely. I've made several attempts on my life in the past, and I quite literally wouldn't be here without other people. The who, "It's you who chooses to be here." thing falls flat when you've been to a place where you don't. This video spreads the message that you are in control, and you can do it all internally, which I fundamentally disagree with. I remember not being in control of my mind. I remember all the help I needed.
      And when I was being counselled on how to stop being suicidal they didn't tell me it was all in my head, and I could just figure it out. They told me to build a support network. They told me to find things that help me in a crisis (one of which they suggested was listening to music). They told me to find things to do that I could look forward to. And they gave me medication. All external things they, medical professionals, said I needed to explore so that I would live.

    A powerful perspective, I never ever understood why people kept saying their life was saved by a stranger they only have a parasocial connection to. I always wondered as a teen if maybe I was just missing something, maybe some ethereal experience these people found by listening to their newfound favorite band, a connection that I didn't have, that I hadn't found "my savior" yet. And even though once hard times did hit, and I did find music that I could relate to in that moment, that helped me bear through the hard times a little more than if I hadn't found it (which is what I will thank Tyler Joseph for)... it didn't freakin' save my life because of some overpowering experience that suddenly made everything better, it didn't actively save my life at all. It enhanced my experience of getting out of those dark moments, yes, it inspired me and made me feel less alone, yes, but it did not do the actual work. It was a catalyst towards bettering myself that I am grateful for, and a time capsule of memories that impacted me, but that is all.

    I'm going to admit the intro did hit a nerve because we do say music or an artist saved our lives and everything you said in the video is true and a lot of us won't admit or acknowledge that we give a big factor when we give this music a type of motivations for ourselves and just give all the credit to the artist and downplaying all of our own choices that helped us get out of that mentality that is at times dark because I think in hindsight we don't realize how much of it is our own effort and give more of the credit to just an artist because we think it's more important than our own self effort and that's why it rub off the wrong way this phrase that the artist didn't save you because I think we think more the music itself is more important than our own individual actions sometimes I think a lot of us have that to realize still that its us and the music only motives us to a certain degree
