Dragonflight 10-70 Speedrun as a Windwalker Monk

  • Although I already have the World Record for 10-60 leveling, I recently discovered a routing change that saves even more time! I figured this called for another speedrun, and since my last one was done as Horde, I decided to do this run as an Alliance Dark Iron Dwarf Monk! I managed to reach level 60 in under 4 hours, and 60-70 took exactly 3 hours, making this my new fastest run. Hopefully this also goes to show that my route works for both Horde AND Alliance, and it doesn't require the Anniversary buff as many people falsely claimed.
    Edit 7/6/23: I managed to beat my world record again by OVER TWO HOURS! If you want to watch that run, you can find it here: • The PERFECT 10-70 Worl...

    Earlier this week I completed a Guardian Druid 60-70 run in just over 3 hours. While it is SLIGHTLY slower than this run, it's far less chaotic and I spent a bit more time explaining my thought process behind the 60-70 routing. You can watch it here: • Solo Leveling From 60-...

    Although I did discuss it a lot during the video, I wanted to use this comment to touch upon the second half of the video, as it's... different. This run was a bit crazy, as it was simultaneously the best and worst speedrun I've ever done.
    Time wise, it was fantastic, as I managed to shatter three records, that being the Alliance 10-60 time, the 10-60 without Anniversary Buff time, AND the 60-70 time. However, as you'll clearly see in the video, I was completely miserable for a large chunk of the run due to a variety of in-game issues and technical difficulties. My RNG for 10-60, while not HORRIBLE, was certainly not great, and that left me feeling a bit tilted going into the 60-70 process. I was then slammed with a never ending series of technical difficulties that I couldn't solve, and this nearly broke me. At that point in time, as a speedrunner, these were effectively the options I had available:
    A) I could try to stop and look for yet another fix for the memory leak issues, which may not even exist. Either way, this would cause me to lose a lot of time and would slow down the viewing experience.
    B) I could pause the timer and take a break from the run, restarting it another time after I managed to solve the issues. This was inherently impossible in this situation since the Darkmoon Faire buff was expiring in less than 12 hours, but regardless it would taint the speedrun and cause my time to no longer be realistic.
    C) I could simply stop the run, cut out the 60-70 section, and upload the video as just an Alliance 10-60 Speedrun. While this may have still been an enjoyable and informative video even without the 60-70 section, I had promised viewers for over a week that I would be doing a full 10-70 run, and I didn't want to go back on that promise.
    D) I could suck it up and power through the rest of the 60-70 run even though I knew the audio was completely fucked and the video was stuttering constantly.
    Obviously I chose to go with Option D in this case, as it was really the only thing I could do given the situation. While doing the run I was also holding onto hope that the memory leak issues would resolve themselves after a short period of time, which gave me the motivation I needed to keep pushing. This was of course not what ended up happening, but by the time I realized the problem wasn't going to fix itself by the end of the run, I was already past the halfway mark and figured I should just see it through to the end.
    Once the run was finally done, I had to face a separate decision as a video editor. I now had a 7 hour long monstrosity of a speedrun. Half of it was perfectly fine, and as stated in Option C above, could be reasonably cut into its own standalone video. The other half contained 3 hours of scuffed audio that would need to be meticulously edited if it's going to actually work as a watchable video. Again, I faced a few different options here:
    A) I could, as already stated numerous times, just split the video in two. The 10-60 run is posted for people who want it, and the 60-70 run is either scrapped or turned into a separate video with the disclaimer that it's a mangled piece of garbage, despite the fast time. Once again, I had promised a full 10-70 speedrun, so I was determined to deliver on that, making this not totally viable.
    B) I could simply cut out all of the audio and post the run to RUclips with 3 hours of dead silent footage. This would have been the easiest option by far, as it would require virtually 0 editing, and it would have been the least intrusive way to solve the problem. That said, I've gathered over the years that most people like to put my runs on in the background as something to listen to while they level, and 3 hours of dead silence isn't exactly peak entertainment.
    C) I could try to talk, commentate, ramble, and tell stories for 2 1/2 hours, which is what I would have been normally doing in the run if the audio issues weren't present. Obviously this is the "best" solution, and I did fill some of the empty space with this, but it's simply impossible for me to do. Talking nonstop for multiple hours is already extremely difficult in the middle of a speedrun, but atleast in those situations I'm somewhat distracted by the actual gameplay. Attempting to speak to a blank screen for 3 hours in one sitting would have been impossible, meaning this solution would require me to record audio over the course of multiple days, causing the video to be delayed even more than it already is. As a result, this was unfortunately not possible.
    D) I could do exactly what I ended up doing and insert a variety of whacky segments that give me a way to keep myself entertained while I attempt to fill in the missing audio. While this may not appeal to everyone, and inherently makes the speedrun viewing experience worse, I found it to be a lot more fun.
    Did I make the best decision here? I don't know for sure, but it allowed me to get the video out faster and in a somewhat watchable format. I also enjoyed recording all of those little bits, which I think counts for something. If you didn't enjoy it and would have rather just watched the unedited speedrun footage, I apologize, but this is the best decision that I believe I could make for myself. I'd be curious to hear what you think though, so feel free to leave a comment about what you did/didn't like in the 60-70 portion of the speedrun.

      I feel for you re the memory leaks. My game regularly crashes after about 6 hours of play (just after midnight, so good reminder to pack up & head to bed!). I have 16GB of RAM & I'm running WoW, Discord, Chrome & Excel. WoW takes up 9-10GB normally according to Titan Bar Performance Info, increasing at 62Kb/s. (Just noticed you can use this addon to force a garbage collection, which might help). Edit: I also found there was no way I can stream and play as it crashes after an hour.

    Awesome Job! I def agree about the dungeon VTK you were talking about early on, as someone who prefers to level and do dungeons as Tank/Heals I have no prob with tank doing giant pulls as long as he makes sure the healer is good with it, you can queue as a healer right away just like tank and dps low level healing is tough with some classes bc you only get 1 or 2 spells. I was doing a group last week with a new character and was just Dpsing for a chance and it was a DK tank prob in his 40s and the healer was a disc priest and it was her first dungeon on that toon so she basically had PW shield, flash heal, and maybe Renew but either way she didnt have a ton of mana and the dungeon was Mara (The side with the plants) and this dude tried to pull from the beginning all the way to Noxxion and he was really fast... didn't say a word just released and tried to do it again... died again... Than I said "Dude healer is obv lower level dont pull so much" and he goes "I literally don't care, this is how I always pull" than tried to do it again I felt so bad for the healer bc I know first hand when you have a group wipe and you're the healer even if its not your fault you feel like it is.

    WIth all the changes going on to low level enchants and professions, did any of the Heirloom enchants change at all, or is it still pretty much the standard old enchants and nothing has changed?
    Well done run though!

    • @Harldan1
      @Harldan1  Год назад

      In theory the optimal enchants haven't changed, but due to scaling bugs some of them can no longer be applied to heirlooms. This is most impactful with the Shoulder and Pants enchants, since those are really powerful but are impossible to use if you don't already have an heirloom with the enchant on it.
      I'm honestly surprised Blizzard hasn't fixed the issue at this point, since it has been around ever since the Dragonflight Pre-Patch. Maybe if this was brought to their attention through a public forum, such as the Community Council, they would realize how broken the enchant scaling is and change it. But what are the odds that someone from the community council watches my videos, right? :P

As far as the whiners and complainers go.. hey, it's a big game and everyone gets something different out of it. I'd like to do dungeons but as a new player, I've only been able to get into LFR content. But I'm quite happy to do everything else the game has to offer until that time I can find a guild. In any case, I would never fault someone for doing what they like to do. It is their time and their dime.

    i think these 3 addons could help you a lot in your speedruns
    quickquest - best questing addon, does a lot of tiny things for specific quests automatically. it seems like somebody went through all the quests and automated everything they could.
    actionbarsaver - let’s you save your actionbar, then “restore” your previous actionbar on a new character. to get this to work, you will have to make all the things on your actionbar macros. you could do this on a max level monk, save it, then you wouldn’t have to setup your actionbar anymore. obviously, problem is, that’s a lot of macros. If you don’t want to do that, you could save an actionbar at a lower level with less abilities or at level 10 when you start.
    dialogkey - let’s you press 1,2 up to 9,0 for dialogue options instead of having to click them, just faster and feels better. also let’s you accept yes no prompts with space (can rebind).
    hope you found something you found useful, gl on your runs :)

    • @Azeroh
      @Azeroh Год назад

      small tip, if you’re using the action bar addon and want to stop new abilities from getting on the bar, just make a null macro that does nothing and fill up all the empty slots.

      another tip, if you bind modifier + mousewheel to interact with mouseover, it makes it a loooot easier to interact with things as fast as you can. You will get a lot of tiny time saves interacting with things, it also will feel a lot better than spamming right click

    • @Harldan1
      @Harldan1  Год назад +1

      Honestly that's a question that only you can answer. Heirlooms are the best items you can get while leveling, and the convenience of not having to constantly swap gear is really nice. That being said, they're not MANDATORY for fast leveling, especially since the experience bonus is gone. It's ultimately just a question of whether you value your gold or your time.
      That said, I would generally recommend upgrading your Neck/Cape/Rings before other heirlooms, as you can reuse those across all of your characters. Armor should be your next priority, and weapons are generally the last priority.

    Someones post mentioned elitest jerks. Elitest jerks was a whole thing. They had a website that was the go-to place to learn how to better your character and skill. They weren't looking down on people. They were helping people rise to their level. I havent played wow in years. Maybe they're still around, idk. Using "he was in a guild named elitest jerks" as a way to prove hes an elitest jerk is a flawed mindset. Hell, i was in a guild briefly named pornstar fluffers, but i wasnt actually a fluffer in real life.

    • @Harldan1
      @Harldan1  Год назад

      Not sure what the exact context of your response is, since I've talked about warmode in a bunch of my runs before.
      While I agree that it is a risk you accept by turning on warmode, it still feels bad being "forced" into using it due to the XP bonus. If someone wanted to gank players while leveling, and then ended up getting ganked themselves, that's karma and an understandable risk. However, if someone who hates PvP and has 0 interest feels pressured into pressing the big button that gives them 20% more XP because they want to level faster, and then a random stranger decides to ruin their day, that sucks.
      Also, as a little bonus note to go along with that, warmode existing means I will basically never be able to stream my world record attempts. If I'm streaming a casual testing run and someone wants to stream snipe and gank me, whatever, who cares. But if I were to stream a world record attempt run I'd be putting a huge target on my back, since literally anyone could just find me in war mode and end the entire thing just because they felt like being a dick. It's not great.

    So one thing that you can and should do for all speed runs is to have all of your abilities on macros on the bars ahead of time. You can save so much time this this and never have to worry about that awkward dragging and alignment that you had to do at the start.

    • @Harldan1
      @Harldan1  Год назад

      I'm sure there's an addon that could manage this, but afaik there's no functionality in the base game to do this. While I could create the macros before the run starts, that stuff isn't automatically placed on my bars when I create a new character. If you know of a way to make that work, though, I'd love to know more.

    • @PhotonCommander
      @PhotonCommander Год назад

      @@Harldan1 I think since your character is already created, and your able to do prep work on the toon, you could browse to your addons folder and modify the file. Like copy paste from another toon and I think that should do it. That’d at least get your UI setup and there may be a way to carry over action bars that way, too.

    • @Fogwell94
      @Fogwell94 Год назад

      There are a few addons that will make the beginning of your runs less stressful.
      The first one is called opie. It creates a radial menu that is keybindable, and you can put pretty much everything on that ring. I am a big sucker for appereance changers, so i made a ring with all the toys that allow me to do it. You can place potions on the rings, you can place your specs on there so to not open the ui everytime just to change spec. You can put macros on the rings. Even if it sounds weird try it out. I havent met a single person that after trying it went back.
      The second one is called myslot. It simply allows you to create action bars profiles. Once you have all the items/ spells on your bars, save them in a profile, and the next time you need them you just press a button and its all there again. And you can put this on opie too.
      I also use opie to swtich between addon profiles. For example, if i want some immersive questing i just press 2-3 buttons and my whole ui vanishes, and my sound gets turned on. Another press and i am back to my standard configuration.

    • @Fogwell94
      @Fogwell94 Год назад

      And myslot is account wide. So you might as well create a configuration on your main, save that as "Levelling" with the mounts already keybinded, gunshoes keybinded etc and when you log on your alt, /myslot, load profile and all your keybinds are going to be there, even if you dont have the items/ riding skill. They just will be greyed out.
      I have 6 separated keybinds for my mounts. One for the trasmog yak, one for the sandstone drake, one for a ground mount, one for a flying one, dragonriding mount, and heirloom mount. Excessive? Yes but quite handy, and now its second nature to me.
      When i create an alt, i just load my standard profile without the need to keybind it again. As someone with around 100 addons, it takes me around 1m to fix the ui for a fresh character :D

    For the start of the run could you macro all the things you need using the global macro tab? (The macro tab that goes for all characters). And have everything equip, accept, interact, etc with the macro. Have it change icon for each step for you know if something breaks etc. This would minimize the start a lot as you wouldnt have to fiddle with everything at the start probably saving a few mins and makes it easier to not mess up and having to restart.

      @@Harldan1 I've only seen them use one at a time on things like a mailbox or a quest. I haven't actually seen a macro change icons other than when it's being used for spells, but I imagine it's possible.
      But an add-on called rxpguide or restedxp has been doing something as an add-on for a while auto accepting on interact with a quest giver, flight paths, vendors etc. Also automatically changing macros to find rares in an area.
      How they do all this is above my knowledge but with how the add-on uses macros plus macros I've used in the past it seems possible.
      If not from macros itself you can try weakaura to do it if macros cannot, weakauras can do a lot of this stuff that I'm too stupid to know how but it's used a lot in classic for automation.

Wouldnt the dull original world record be just a raw 10-70 without darkmoon since thats a monthly event. For instance when power liftrers and strongman lift they either have wraps on or no wraps. Both are their own individual world records cause one is assisting. I love this video and you did an amazing job, just genuily asking. Because for me i would break it up into one with darkmoon fair and one without considering one can only be done within the first week of the month.

      I mean, you could go ahead and do a run without DMF and call it a different category. Nothing is stopping you from doing that. I personally choose to use DMF buff because it's active for an entire week every month, so it's not really that hard to get. Additionally, the DMF buff doesn't significantly change the way the run is done, it just speeds it up slightly and makes it less boring. To each their own.
