Just found this on youtube love it. I traveled from LA to Martinez on the Coastal Starlight the LA train station is great architecture. The scenery was beautiful along the coast. Traveled by coach but spent most of my time in the observation car. Met alot of good people. I also traveled from Martinez to Portland. Stayed overnite in Klamath Falls and then continued to Portland. Great scenery along the way. Did all this in 2019 before the covid happened. I was suppose to do the train in Denver Colorado but then covid happened, looking forward to traveling when all this is over. Love me a train ride.
+Guns Cars and Digits I just took the Coast Starlight from Portland to Seattle, and thought it was a fucking dump. I rode in coach and the first thing I noticed, was the filth and trash littered everywhere in the train cars. There was a bunch of dirt on the floor right underneath my seat. The bathrooms were fucking disgusting. The conducters were so fucking worthless. You could totally tell the lady working in the cafe car hated her job. Never again.
Ah. Yeah, portable bathrooms are always an issue. I avoid them at all costs. Like, I'll force myself to turd before taking a plane. I have no idea how they clean the train cars. I mean, seriously. They see a lot of traffic. The lady in the cafe car has every right to hate her job. She spends her live traveling constantly.
I have taken the Coast Starlight #14 LA to Seattle 11 times, and just recently started taking the Southwest Chief from LA to Chicago...going again Jun 2017. People tell me I'm crazy to pay so much (sleeper car) than just take a plane... but this video tells why! Have a great trip!
Good video, thanks for posting. We have friends in Vancouver BC that we visit often but we've always flown. In 2015 it was discovered I have a bad heart and the breathing issues it causes. My cardio doc prescribed a small oxygen maker in case I had altitude issues on the plane when we flew this past March and despite having all the paper work in order, TSA in Chicago about insisted I was carrying a nuke and all their BS nearly caused us to miss our flight, ZERO issues leaving Canada to return home. NEVER again. This December 4th we board the Texas Eagle for the trip from Chicago to LA and then the Coast Starlight to Seattle where our friends will pick us up. It's the long way around but I'm limited to a max of 4500 ft and it's also the most expensive way to go, we have a bedroom sleeper both ways, but seems interesting. We've never Amtraked before and have been looking at YT videos of the Eagle and the Starlight to get an idea of what to expect. They say getting there is half the fun!!
I wanna go a tour group in the train stopping by many places then back on the Train. At least i get guides not to be lost😊 very nice video i enjoyed the entire
Amtrak has used the same equipment for the last 20 to 30 years. The only Amtrak trains that have received upgrades recently are the Northeast corridor, and the state supported lines.
Keep in mind that the Coast Starlight is actually between LA and Seattle. This being a SF TV show, of course it began in the Bay Area. It is one of my two bucket list train trips. The other is the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle. The one I've done round trip twice is the California Zephyr. What a trip!!! Westbound, through the Rockies one day, and through the Sierras the the next or the other way around heading east. But book soon! Trump apparently has Amtrak on his budget's destroy list.
Paul Somers I am a huge advocate of trains. Obviously, In any responsible and successful business it is necessary to both cover costs and make a profit. Unfortubately Amtrak as a whole doesn't. Amtrak has been on nothing short of life support since it's inception. No private business could possibly continue as amtrak has. Aside from the Northeast corridor Amtrak has been a failure. The class one railroads, tired of being pushed around by the gub-ment, are less than hospitable to amtrak when their freight is scheduled to roll. Anyone who understands business and finances knows not to put the saddle on this horse. As much as I love riding the rails, it must be held accountable.
Paul is quite right about this being a local program based in the San Francisco Bay Area, and that's why we hopped aboard in San Jose. Great fun, but don't be in anything like a hurry.
As piss poor the service is, and as arrogant as Amtrak is about it, it should be axed. Worst train service in the world. Bob Paulino, do you realize that over 50% of the fares on Amtrak the taxpayers foot the bill in subsidies? Double all the fares for the passengers have to pay and see how long Amtrak operates. That's what you get when you have a government owned Rail System. The private sector railroads realized in the late 1960's they could no longer afford to operate passenger service and the federal government took it over so the private sector could concentrate on freight which is a huge moneymaker for them. And the Federal Government, with its deep pockets, (The American taxpayers) it started operating Amtrak like it does everything it operates, at a loss. Comparing Amtrak to the private sector railroads is like comparing the Post office to UPS and FedEx. Sort of like comparing bowling Balls to Basketballs, both are round, but that's about it. Anything the Federal Government can do the Private Sector does better. This country is too big for a nationwide rail service. And this Federal Government is too big and needs to be radically scaled back. That's what Trump is trying to do. And Amtrak is as good a place to start as anywhere.
Fav way to travel been riding trains since 1949~AmTrack does it right (round trip business cheaper than 1way flying) more comfortable, great food, you can get off every hr or so to smoke (try that on a plain lol) don't be in a hurry enjoy the scenery! Make a friend in the observatory car, Galley has snacks and drinks! & they take good care of seniors attendent in each car! Make res 2 weeks ahead for discounts, if you need to cancel 48yrs ahead you get refund! "ALL ABOARD" it doesn't matter where the train's going it's just get on board !
Amtrak used to have the Desert Wind which ran through Las Vegas. The Desert Wind no longer exists. I wonder why Amtrak eliminated the Desert Wind ?Amtrak should have kept the Desert Wind because it would be a good way to get to Las Vegas without flying or driving. In fact a lot of people would use the Desert Wind on weekends.
Amtrak never "took over" any railroads bankrupt or otherwise only passenger service on selected routes. It does own the northeast corridor however which I believe it got from Conrail which did take over several bankrupt railroads.
Ironic, the Starlight just got stranded for 3 days due to mechanical reasons yesterday. Three days which the passengers weren't allowed to get off the train and just had to wait for a rescue locomotive to arrive to get them out of there.
At a time when small towns such as Las Vegas, New Mexico are trying to take advantage of being on the route to boost their tourism trade. They're almost done renovating the historic hotel built by the Santa Fe 100 years ago, and now faced with how the hell they will get tourists to stay there with no Soiuthwest Chief.
@@micmac99 Amtrak wants to replace this train with a train that will connect Los Angeles with the California zephyr in salt lake city and plus this train with travel through Las Vegas Nevada which currently is not served by Amtrak right now.
at 14:50 he's singing the praises of the dining car , five years ago he had no ideal the tRump administration would put someone in charge that would get rid of it 😕
We still have it. Don't think we'll be getting rid of it either. The parlor car was discontinued due to maintenance required every single night. How do I know this? I work it every single night. Sit back and enjoy the ride!

Brian Hackney has an amazing voice
You have NO IDEA HOW worth it that view of Crater Lake is - just gorgeous!
I guess this was done a while ago, but if anyone's listening....Thank you, thank you, thank you. Well done piece on the Coast Starlight!
I live in Chicago and the Coast Starlight is on my bucket list.
I did it. Best money I ever spent. Coach class. I'm gonna do Sea-NYC-Miami-ABQ. Coach class of course. It's cheaper and better for the environment.
+Guns Cars and Digits I'm thinking of taking the Coast Starlight from Portland to Seattle in September. How is the food and on time performance?

We just had so much fun on the Coast Starlight!
Loved it from Seattle to LA
This was such a fun watch. I don’t know how I got here, but I thoroughly enjoyed it :)
This train journey is definitely on my Bucket. Enjoyed this feature!🙂
It doesn't matter where you're going just get on board ✩
Love the coast star light. And the food in the dining car is amazing!

Just shows you they're built to last yea! Don't need to go 250mph...lol

Making the same trip this Sunday. Summertime.

Price wise? I figure it’s round trip back to San Jose?
I'm planning to take this trip from San Diego. Anyone know what time of year the trip in the video was made. I'd love to see the snow.
Early fall to late spring
How is Crater Lake Oregon's only national park? Oregon is beautiful!
Sad that the Pacific Parlour cars have been retired.
Not on coastal...goes for sleepers only! Observatory car for all other riders

Hotels come with the package of Amtrak’s?
Ironic, the Starlight just got stranded for 3 days due to mechanical reasons yesterday. Three days which the passengers weren't allowed to get off the train and just had to wait for a rescue locomotive to arrive to get them out of there.
Coastal starlight did 100mph between Sacramento and Bay Area.
nice railway travels
Amtrak is planning to eliminate the southwest chief or at least part of the southwest chief and replace that part with bus service.

The Pacific Parlour Cars are no more.
Once again they are on Star lite but for sleepers only others have the observatory car & galley located right below!

"This isn't exactly a ROAD".
