I LOVE the Coast Starlight very much! I have ridden on Amtrak long distance trains a number of times and I love it because sleeping on the train is fun, plus the beautiful scenery! One time, I actually observed a live birth take place on the train, I’m not joking. Back in late March 2019, I was riding the California Zephyr from Davis to Glenwood Springs and on the train, there was pregnant 19 year old girl from SFSU traveling from Emeryville to Denver with her boyfriend. They normally fly home from college for holidays/breaks but because their due date was close (due date was April 5th and they departed on March 29th), they had to use the train since airlines do not allow women to fly in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy. During the ride at 1 AM, the girl’s water broke and the attendant for our sleeping car (Justin Woods, a young guy in his early 20s based in Chicago) volunteered to deliver the baby since he had seen how it was done online before. The girl agreed and Justin did so in which he went into the first aid kit, got his gloves on, then squeezed himself into the roomette to have the girl push while he caught the baby when she was born. The baby ended up being born on the train - a healthy baby girl in a ROOMETTE!!! It was a fabulous story and the girl, her newborn and boyfriend were taken off the train by paramedics at the next railroad crossing. The train was in a remote location between Elko and Salt Lake City at the moment which required a helicopter to meet the train and have her airlifted to the nearest hospital which was more than an hour away (an ambulance can’t drive more than 30 minutes away from it’s base and SLC would take longer than that, so they used a helicopter). As it is, I observed the whole thing as I was holding the girl’s left leg as well as recording this with her boyfriend’s phone. I’ve wondered - if you are female, suppose this happened to you where you (or your wife/girlfriend) suddenly went into labor on an Amtrak train and the train was going across a remote location at the moment. Would you at all be able to tolerate giving birth unmediated, while crammed into a Roomette, on a bed that was not flexible (unlike in the hospital), on a train that speeding up to 90 MPH, the baby’s umbilical cord having to stay attached to you until you got to a hospital (no scissors/clamps on the train), and the person delivering your baby is an Amtrak conductor/attendant with no medical training or license of any kind??? Seriously, this girl was incredibly brave and was lucky that there were no complications, PLUS it only took 20 minutes for her to push the baby out (water broke at 1 AM, and the baby was born at 1:22 AM) What do you think of all this!!!???
I took that very same train ride in 2010, from San Diego to San Francisco, and also had the "roomette". It was the most fun that I've ever had on a trip in a very long time. The service was excellent, the meals were great and the overall experience and the scenery made it the trip of a lifetime. To this day, my wife still asks me when are we going back. I HIGHLY recommend it.
I ride the Empire Builder and the Lakeshore Limited between Portland and Boston at least once a year.Always take the coach. If you get the seat on either side of the stair well it'll be a good ride! Never had a bad time on Amtrak.
Really loved our mammoth trip around Canada & the US last Autumn. Travelling through the amazing landscapes & seascapes seen from the Coast Starlight was among the highlights. The Pacific Parlour car with it's bar, Captain armchairs, etched glazing, Mahogany panelling, lower-level Cinema, (usually)WiFi availability & the really great service from AmTrak train crew. etc. gave us a welcome taste of how the privileged few once travelled on the famous named trains of yesteryear. Really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work. Regards. Bobby
2012 (I didn't even know of this video) and decided to take an XPT train (not overnight due to arrival time) to Gloucester; NSW; Australia, unfurl my bike and go camping. I was so amazed to see this video in 2013 and have since taken an Xplorer train to Scone; NSW and also cycled out and gone camping 2.5 weeks ago. The XPT & Xplorer aren't as luxurious as Superliners, but they're still better than long bus trips I am so glad to see similar adventure in another part of the world I will choose another location to enjoy another awesome train-camping-cycling trip again
Precovid I was planning a bike touring trip with my old veteran shipmates. We were deployed on ships so the moving while showering thing will be familiar and comforting. I don't have the funds for a foldup bike. I understand their policy is two full sized bikes per car? Wondering how much things have changed since Covid. I am in the high risk category so out of an abundance of caution we haven't planned our trip yet. Lol to the top bunk straps, we had hurricane bars on our racks for similar reasons. Interesting video, even the defunct video games.
This was a very fun video to watch as I model the Amtrak Coastal Starlight in N scale. As never seeing the train in person as I like on the east coast I made an excellent choice. We have to get those video games fixed LOL. Thanks for the tour.
Excellent video, well framed and edited, with music and everything. I'm taking the train from LA to Seattle this weekend and your video has really given me a great look into what the sleeper car roomette is going to be like. Thank you.
Was looking for information about Brompton bikes and I found this. It's cool with some helpful information. I hope you will continiue this little series. Jens
Nicely done - as we get ready to take our first long Amtrak trip (starting on this train!) it was nice to see your review. And thanks for the GREAT music background. Very nice!!
Thanks for the post. I was not aware of the movie feature. Also I thought only "first class" cabins had shower. Good to know about coffee too. I also liked the travel fishing rod. Looks like a fly rod. I booked the trip to go to Canada for fly fishing.
Love your video! The best I have seen in a while. You have a great voice for this and love the piano music in the background! I so want to ride a train somewhere!
You did a great job explaining the roomette, both good and bad points. My reluctance in booking a train ride over a long distance is the possible long wait for the train to show up at my train station in Salt Lake City. The Amtrak people say the trains can be as late as 24 hours. That is totally incompetent if a person has a schedule to stick to. I was going to ride to Chicago from SLC but decided to fly instead. I could not risk being up to 24 hours late. But a roomette is the way to go.
I did this back on 02 August 2012 with my grandmother. Went from TAC to VNC. Very cool ride. You are closer to the front of the train but it costs I think $700
I have taken the sleeper car on several occasions on Amtrak's Silver Star from Tampa to Ft. Lauderdale - it is well worth the extra accommodation charge as opposed to sitting 4.5 to 5 hours in coach. Someday I will have to take an overnight trip on Amtrak in the sleeper car. By the way, the sleeper cars on the Silver Star as well as the Silver Meteor are the single level Viewliner cars due to the tunnels both trains go through in the northeast. Great video by the way!
VERY nice quick tour of the Amtrak smaller sleeper room, and the Coast Starlight. Maybe I was distracted by the phone, but I think you forgot to mention that all 3 meals per day in the Dining Car are included when you get a sleeper...
Thank you so much for making this video. We've been on that train, but we just went from LAX-SLO. Next month, we plan on doing it all the way from LAX-SEA! Can't wait! I'm a travel agent, so I'm really happy you made this, I can share it with some clients, if you don't mind? Happy pedaling!
That's a neat video. Most rail vid's are on the trip outside and not in ! I took the same trip 2 months ago , with the roomlette option for a short trip from Simi Val to Paso Robles. It was pure delight =)
Great video! So, the roomettes across the isle from each other look pretty close together is that true? The reason I'm asking is that all of the family bedrooms etc. were booked so I was thinking of booking two roomettes. I'm traveling with kids age 10+ and thinking of putting 1 kid and 1 adult in each roomette. Maybe leaving the doors open so they can move from room to room easily (except for when sleeping at night of course). Does this sound doable?
Travel by rail, especially in sleeper accommodations, is just SO civilized. It takes longer and it costs more than flying but you are treated like a human being instead of cargo along the way. You arrive refreshed, relaxed and in a good mood. Can't say any of those for the airlines anymore.
I travelled night and day on trains in Europe and it was GREAT. No such beasts here. And why doesn't Amtrack offer more night trains anyway? It takes 12 hours to go from NC to PA, and if I could do it overnight I would do it all the time. Only 1, count 'em, 1 Palmetto goes through a day. Come on, America! Wake up to the beauty of trains!
It's called fascism, that's how much it sucks. The government owns Amtrak... The government+business=fascism. If it were not fascist, it would not suck. Just wait till Hyperloop comes around... It will be a3 HR tell
I have traveled Coach with my Bike Friday folding bike . The one time I decided to use the travel bag, instead of packing it in the suitcase/travel trailer, it was damaged by other passengers trying to force their luggage into the luggage compartment when it was already full. I now have a Brompton and am not letting it out of my sight if I bring it on a train-- no, no.
Oh man, I didn't know about the arcade or movie cars! I should have checked that out when we went on the Coast Starlight during the summer. The one thing I think you left out is that with a sleeper you get free meals (as in, anything on the menu, for free -- including free hagen daas ice cream for desert). Other than that, great job & thanks for sharing!
Rode the Coast Starlight Seattle to Los Angeles in 2004 accompanying friends whose husband was severely diabetic and couldn't withstand coach travel.Expensive, but meals and beverages included with free wine at supper,My only complaint was that attendant forgot to turn on toilet pump before retiring for the night.Expensive, but a lovely way to travel and see places otherwise not able to see from a car.
I know it’s been 10 years but would love to see your folding bike and gear...I’m thinking of being a bike packing snowbird and the only way I can do it is by train...I need to get from Seattle to Los Angeles then back again after 6 months...would love any tips
I'm an Amtrak fan and have been wanting to take this train for some time. It's nice to see a well done video about the Starlight seeing as there are an endless torrent of mediocre ones (sorry other people).. I feel Amtrak should be giving you some sort of kickback as you are not only appealing to train travel but giving more travel bugs our age the REAL deal with no nonsense. Bless your camera work oh faceless other person. You've obviously done this before. Cheers.
Did this last time I traveled Amtrak. Worth the spend for two. Hartford to Seattle. Though we didnt have the parlour car. Trains W/of Chicago are better and less crowded `cept for the Coast Starlight. SFO to Seattle is a nice trip though.
Wow, a movie theatre and an arcade...(even if the games are old) is quite nice. I assume these things are only available on the Coast Starlight sleeper accommodation, and regular Amtrak sleeper sections....for instance on the Broadway Ltd, or Empire Builder.

Sleeper car trips are the best. Took my last trip from San Bernado to Wa. D.C.. I loved every minute of it. Wouldn't travel any other way.
Great!! We're planning on taking a trip from OR to CA in the summer with the Bromptons via the train. This was a perfect walkthrough to help us out!
I ride the Empire Builder and the Lakeshore Limited between Portland and Boston at least once a year.Always take the coach. If you get the seat on either side of the stair well it'll be a good ride! Never had a bad time on Amtrak.
Great job and very informative! I believe your meals are included with a sleeper car.
You are just so likeable. Bless your heart!
Great Laura, thanks for the tour. I have not been on a train since the 70s. Neat to see.
Really loved our mammoth trip around Canada & the US last Autumn. Travelling through the amazing landscapes & seascapes seen from the Coast Starlight was among the highlights. You are so lovely person , thank you for your view of amtrak train
Loving the jazz on the background---great review! I will have one from Chicago to Los Angeles.
Great little video of the “good ol’ days”…….I a, going to check that out. Thanks
Showers, an arcade and a cinema on a train! That is amazing!
Was it a no smoking sign on door into the shower?
@@daneriksson8947 2:03 yes that is definitely a no smoking sign. Probably to discourage people hiding in there for a cigarette on long journeys.
We are taking an amtrak up the east coast next month and are looking forward to it. Thanks for sharing.
I honestly think that Amtrak's sleeper cars are more comfortable than my actual ROOM at home...
thank you so much for your little tour. This absolutely helped my best friend and I decide whether or not to take this train... TOTES GONNA DO!
This old PLP video came up on my feed somehow. Love to see it.
Thank you, I am thinking about taking a Amtrak trip with my family and you answered a lot of questions for me. Thank you

Fun stuff! What a down-to-Earth, upbeat presenter.
This is such a nice video tour! Looking forward to our Coast Starlight journey next week.
Saptarshi Chakraborty how was it? I really wanna go!!!!

Probably the best self produced rail travel film I have seen on the Tube. Thanks.
Hey, that was really cool and informative. Makes me want to book an overnight trip for my family. Thank you so much for posting this. :)
Great video. The roomettes are small but they are very comfortable.
I think the nicest thing about the shower is the water stays warm for a long time.
Was looking for information about Brompton bikes and I found this. It's cool with some helpful information. I hope you will continiue this little series.

The shower is shared.
Very nice video! Both informative & fun to watch. Makes me want to buy a ticket NOW!!
+Brett Richardson awesome. Thanks for watching!
Love your video! The best I have seen in a while. You have a great voice for this and love the piano music in the background! I so want to ride a train somewhere!
Nice tour. It gives me a better idea of the sleepers cars.
Amtrak should be paying you for this. Great!
what makes you think they're not?
You did a great job explaining the roomette, both good and bad points. We did this train so much fun great sleeping
THRILLING!! looks very serene
That looks so cozy!!
It is. I’ve ridden in those roomettes before
Enjoyed watching. Nicely done. Thanks for posting!
what a living doll so sweet!
Great Tour! I've riden the Starlight several times, but that Arcade Car is new to me. Pretty cool! Greetings from Nebraska!
VERY nice quick tour of the Amtrak smaller sleeper room, and the Coast Starlight. Maybe I was distracted by the phone, but I think you forgot to mention that all 3 meals per day in the Dining Car are included when you get a sleeper...
She’s adorable.
Yes she is actually one of the best nice and get to the point
Latonya Soloman I got to the point.
She’s older now
Nice video. Thanks for posting. Just did the LA to Seattle in July, 2012 and the arcade car was not in the consist.
Movie theater and arcade car?? I thought I knew a lot about Amtrak and thought you were kidding until I watched this video. Wow.
You guys are great thank you for the tour! I will get on a train one day :) hopefully soon
Oh cool ! They show movies ! I was wondering about that
Great tour! Really cute girl!
Thanks enjoyed your tour always wondered about Amtrak travel
That's a neat video. Most rail vid's are on the trip outside and not in ! I took the same trip 2 months ago , with the roomlette option for a short trip from Simi Val to Paso Robles. It was pure delight =)
I just realized this video is 10 years old. Still good though

I've always wondered....very cool video. Now I know. I'd like to travel by train someday just to say I've done it.
Very Very nice tour!!! You did it so well!!!

I took a sleeping car from LA to Santa Fe. It was really nice. :)

One of the better demo videos on you tube. Good work.

Way cool. I love train travel. Thanks for posting.
That pacific parlor car was originally used and built for the Santa Fe Railway on their famous El Capitan passenger train.
What a great video

I'm a big fan of the bidet. But is that an option aboard such a long train?
I love the roomettes between Los Angeles and San Jose, but they are so EXPENSIVE! I'm thinking about foregoing roomettes due to the exorbitant price.
Thanks that was really help full
Loved the video, thank you so much for sharing! It is really a big help to know what to expect.
Never been on a train - but I have been in stunt planes and helicopters.
Just to clarify, the parlor cars are no longer active, I don't know if the arcade car is still active or not.
Signed, Angela.
The arcade cars got converted into Business class cars for the Coast Starlight (which are all out of service at the moment due to COVID-19)
Cute Video Hostess!!!!! Look like an awesome trip!!!!! Fun Video!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing
Riding this soon. Thanks for the tour. Would like info on what we can pack vs on a plane.
+Mommie Kat you can pretty much anything. Just have to keep it to two bags I believe.
Way cool tour! Thanks for sharing that..
I'm an Amtrak fan and have been wanting to take this train for some time. Out of all the times I've taken this train (stayed in the roomette every time) I never went to the arcade, too lazy to go back there.
Great video
We liked your video.
I just sold with that arcade car. Im definitely gonna start traveling by train. Even if it means a 5 day trip.
I would love to do this.
Awesome! Thank you so much.
great film !
you did a good job
did this room in augest didn't have cool air in my room and was stuffy too. But was fun
Lol I live in Atascadero (city next to Paso Robles) and I've ridden on that exact train!
i was once on an amtrak to new york and it broke down on a bridge in north carolina i could'int sleep
Did this last time I traveled Amtrak. Worth the spend for two. Hartford to Seattle. Though we didnt have the parlour car. Trains W/of Chicago are better and less crowded `cept for the Coast Starlight. SFO to Seattle is a nice trip though.
Thank you! I was very interested in the sleeper and restrooms. What was your cost? How was the food? Was experience worth it?
Thanks for the intro.
Nice video. Thanks )
This was the best tour video so far, of all the videos I've seen. Great job!!! Btw, you guys had the same room I had when I traveled.
Do they have Wi-Fi. ? Which is better than the movie cabin.... In my opinion
Yes.
Wow, a movie theatre and an arcade...(even if the games are old) is quite nice. I assume these things are only available on the Coast Starlight sleeper accommodation, and regular Amtrak sleeper sections....for instance on the Broadway Ltd, or Empire Builder.
+Rodney Brown the movie theatre is only accessible to sleeper car guests. The arcade WAS accessible to all, but it is no longer.
Path Less Pedaled That's a shame, Amtrak should offer these two things on sleeper accommodations on all their trains.
I made the mistake of taking Amtrak from Dallas to Austin once. It took nine hours to go two hundred miles.
Well done!
