  • It was finally time to visit the Polish cities that we've been wanting to visit for a while. And, as luck would have it, we did it all in one glorious trip.

Thank you for mentioning that Lwów (today: Lviv) was a Polish city and that it is unique among the cities of Ukraine, while its architecture resembles that of other Polish cities.
Of course, no one denies that it is a Ukrainian city today.
But we simply miss it... (so many historical memories linked with it!)

    • @forez8188
      @forez8188 Год назад +14

Lwów was very important for Poland and the Polish nation but as long as the Ukrainians honour the Polish past of the city and keep it clean, preserve the architecture and allow us to visit then I see no reason to wage any dispute over it.

Do you realize that of all places a bust of Roman Szuchewycz a WW2 crinimal got installed at the entrance to the St Mary Magdalene school nr 10 in Lwów. One of only three schools there. He took part in Lviv pogroms and is resposible for the slaying of 100k Poles.

We are responsible to make it better now. Listening and putting an effort to understand each other, cooperating on many fields. Ukrainians now are in fight, in servival mode.
They need symbols and heroes. And heroes are idealised, their darker sides forgotten.
So Poles do. Let's get mature and strong, be able to look at our own darker side and repair.
We must stay in dialog and be patient. This is a necessity. We should remember, accept each other's grieves, grieve together if possible and move on.
Otherwise we may recreate a hell from the past all over again.
(Discrimination of Ukrainians by Poles, nationalism of both sides; Ukrainians who glued to Nazi ideology to create their own state and very brutal mass genocide made by them on Polish neighbours

Polish Cieszyn is a very historic city with a castle, old market-square, old historic brewery, while Czech Cieszyn is rather a XIX-century industrial town with a big railway station. The Czech part of Cieszyn has developed, because there was no enough place for modern buildings and industry on the Polish side of the river. After the fall of Austrio-Hungarian Empire, the Polish part became the cultural capitol of the region that is called Cieszyn-Silesia, while the Czech part is only one of the industrial cities of the Czech Silesia with nothing special there.
Czech Republic is well known for much cheaper liquor and good beer. That's why there are so many shops that sell it near the Polish border.

Definitely do come back to Kraków sometime in the future and spend more time there. This ancient royal capital of Poland was spared the destruction during World War 2, therefore each place, each building and literally every stone in this city is a living history. It takes time to get to know it, and it should be done slowly, just as you slowly drink good wine, savouring every sip.

A-shaped roofs with long pitches are not accidental. In the mountains there is a lot of snowfall and this type of roof is safer because tons of snow do not weigh it down, it just falls right down. and if somehow it stays on it, it is much easier to get rid of it. best regards to you and your family!

If, for example, you would like to visit Silesia (you have already been to Cieszyn, you have not visited Katowice or Wrocław or various castles, palaces, etc.), one weekend is absolutely not enough to see a relatively complete picture. Well, not everything can be done at once 🙂
If you like crossing borders (which do not divide), a trip to Praha via Wrocław would be a good idea in my opinion. You should plan at least one day for each of these cities (you'll see right away that it's not enough, but always something). Castles and palaces... maybe next time 🙂

The Czeski Cieszyn (ceski Tiesin) is part of Zaolzie (the name of region comes from border river) . In Zaolzie (which is contentious region, at least was in past, between Poland and Czech Republic) majority of population are Poles (at least was in past). Today due many reasons the polish population is far less then 100 000 (before war, in 1938 it was over 120 000 camparing to 30 000 Czechs and 20 00 Germans).

"No balconies," he says, walking under a balcony. :-)
I was just watching last night the video where you were trying to decide which country to settle in. And if you stayed in Poland, you would have to learn Polish, where if you went to Spain or Portugal you would know the language. And it occurs to me that if you already know five languages, languages probably aren't that much of a problem for you :-) And, yeah, your Polish sounds awesome. Of course I'm not Polish. But I could tell when it didn't...
Okay so I get excited just watching people get loaded into the car. And ooh it's a rest stop! I think that means I haven't been anywhere for really long time. I don't know what they call the style of architecture where everything looks like a chalet. Swiss? That doesn't sound very architectury, so probably not.
Eventually I saw that Krakow is in the title as well. Apparently I was so excited the first time with Zakopane that I didn't even see it. I suppose I could have been there yesterday with the Dutch girl whose name I will learn eventually, on a motorbike... but I thought I would wait. I didn't expect to be here anytime soon, but here we are! :-) we are in Czech Republic (because voice to text has no hope of spelling that city name)
Even driving down the road is exciting. (Also my brother told me to stay out of the dining room while he tears it apart. And not let the ducks out tomorrow morning because he has to move a refrigerator. Don't get up early... Yeah I think I can manage that :-) )
I should get back to this. :-) Maybe the clouds will go away. (Hopefully the horrendous heat waves that everyone else is suffering are not reaching you. It's kind of hard to tell in Celsius. And no it's not horrendous here, 5 mi from the Gulf of Mexico. But I don't tend to go outside in the middle of the afternoon. So maybe it is and I just don't know it? But it's always cooler here than it is inland. And in Florida that's a plus, unlike in Boston where you are always waiting for it to get warm. Okay not always, but the first day got warm, my husband would say "Let's go to the beach!" and I'm like "Yes! it's finally warm. let's go to the coldest possible place!" No, we don't go to the beach a lot here. I was never a beach girl. I do like looking at the mountains and the streams though.)
And seeing your mother taking pictures of flowers reminded me of back when I used to take pictures of flowers. I was testing cameras in the '90s and I was taking lots of pictures of flowers. But those were really pretty flowers, that your mother was taking pictures of. There are just some places where you go, where you just want to bottle it up and take it home with you... (My place is usually Pasadena, but Zakopane seems like one of those kind of places)

I feel like the part about Cieszyn doesn't do it justice. At least not for the Polish side. There's so much to see and explore, yet you didn't show that :\
For people that haven't been there- it's truly scenic. Worth going there for sure.

Zakopane and no mountains :(. You must come back, at at least go on Kasprowy (the easiest thing to do, but ok if nothing else). Don't disappoint yourself (and your guests).

Nice place....Ive thinking about moving from the states to there. My family comes from Poland Ukraine border region
Ya I was living in New York too - I was out in Riverhead (Polish Town) - getting sick of the US - I dont know if I can handle the Polish winter though - is it much colder than NY?

On average, Cracow and Warsaw are 3 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit) colder than New York. For a better idea: the average temperature in major Polish cities is roughly the same as in Chicago.
Winter is slightly (by 1 to 3 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer in Poland. Spring is exactly the same. Summer is noticeably (by 5-7°F) hotter and more humid in Chicago, so I would say it's more pleasant in Poland. Autumn is also warmer (by 5-8°F) in Chicago.
The yearly average temperature in Chicago is exactly the same as in Wrocław and 2°F higher than in Warsaw and Cracow. Chicago is more rainy, snowy and windy than most of Poland. Polish weather is a bit milder but it's still very comparable. So if you try to imagine it, you can think of Chicago...
or Boston (except for precipitation: Boston is very rainy and snowy; in Poland, we have so much rain and snowfall only in the mountains). Winter and spring temperatures are precisely the same in Boston as in Wrocław, but Poland is much less humid so the feel is better.
PS If you want to check the climate, I recommend Weather Spark. There are nice charts: you can add different cities and see comparisons between them. A fun toy. :)
