  • I've lived in many places around the globe, and if there's one thing that I've noticed about Poland is that the bang for your buck here is surprisingly high. The pros just keep piling on for what's essentially the same type of lifestyle you might have elsewhere.
    And that means that for an equivalent lifestyle that you can have here in Poland, you'd need to make various compromises if you want that same lifestyle in an equivalent city in many countries around the world.

      I'm glad I waited a second. when you mentioned Biedronka, I was going to ask. Carrefour (sp?) looked better to me but I guess just maybe more modern, wider aisles, or as you say there is more variety. I didn't know there was more variety but perhaps I assumed. The other looked like it hasn't been updated for a while and it might be a little small. But it's great if you have just basic things you want to buy - they're probably cheaper there. or at least according to their tagline, everyday low prices or whatever order of those words it was... lower prices every day... It's a slight difference in meaning. language is such fun! shades of meaning.
      But my point is, different stores for different purposes :-)
      Even now, my roommate goes to Publix and Winn-Dixie and Sam's club and occasionally Walmart and sometimes Target (and last week he went to Aldi's. The ducks eat a lot of lettuce and watermelon). Of course he drives there, and he goes shopping every day. But he's working from home so the gas prices aren't as much of a burden as if he was still working in Tampa.
      The outside of your old building is very pretty. peach is one of my favorite colors along with orchid and then pink.
      I have painted rooms in each color with accents in the other color. People think it's a weird combination but then it looks good. although I did have to talk my then husband into painting the bedroom purple and I didn't succeed until his stepmother painted hers that color. It was a bit dark, the orchid, so we went out and bought some bright peach lace curtains and then it balanced nicely.
      If you would like to show us the inside of Carrefour someday - I would watch that. I was surprised to find brands I see in America in stores in Russia. And you can always tell us how food is cheaper in Poland :-)

      @Assismus
      True
      And yet, not always. So many educated English speakers are terrified of the word "me." I think they've been taught it's uneducated.
      I'm creating an example from scratch:
      It occurred to Marina and I that...
      No, that would be it occurred to Marina and me that...
      For those of us who don't think about grammar and didn't do well with it in school, you just subtract the other person and see if the sentence works:
      It occurred to I that
      Right. That doesn't sound correct.
      So it must be
      It occurred to Marina and me.
      (I'm not good with grammar. I didn't learn what an indirect object was until I was trying to study Polish. I don't even understand the point of diagramming a sentence. But obviously when you speak a language all your life you know what sounds right and what doesn't. If only we had Polish classes in high school the way we had French and Spanish, they would have spoken to us in the language all the time and we would know when things sounded wrong)

    • @pamelajaye
      @pamelajaye 2 года назад

      @Assismus I did get it when you said it, although it took me a moment. I think those were the parts of manners someone forgot to teach me, but it's very nice to see them. I was only taught to say please and thank you and open doors for people and such. Although in French class we were taught who to introduce to whom. So I guess they still had that type of manners in France? Or I was never taught how to introduce people in English :-)

    I agree 100%. Warsaw is sooo comfortable. And it's moving in the right direction. More metro lines, more green spaces, more bicycle paths. I personally walk on foot every day, because my commute is through a very pretty, lush green neighborhood. I meet hedgehogs, listen to birds, enjoy the peace.
    The only problem is that new development is getting out of hand in some places, but that kind of developer-devastation is present everywhere in Poland because of stupid laws. Cracow and Wrocław have the same problem so Warsaw is not doing that bad.
    Poland has also a ton of freedom for personal electric vehicles. So if you own a small electric thing like an EUC or an Ebike, you can travel very fast and comfortable anywhere you want.

    • @pamelajaye
      @pamelajaye 2 года назад +3

      It is good to do all that walking. when I was young and single and didn't have a car, I weighed less. between the buses and the subway I walked 28 minutes a day, in every kind of Boston weather. Okay sometimes I flew, because of the wind. I ended up on the news once. sadly I didn't get to see it, but the people who road the bus with me told me about it. everything was on video tape by then and I'm sure just taped right over. No chance to ever see it, but it would have been cool...
      I would love to see a hedgehog someday. I've actually only seen them on RUclips. But I love my ducks.

    What you are talking about is, among other things, due to the fact that each district of Warsaw is like a city within a city. In each you find modern office buildings, modern housing estates, huge modern stately shopping centers, exotic restaurants from all over the world, all kinds of grocery stores.... You can say that Warsaw has several centers. Someone who came to Warsaw for the first time, did not see the downtown area, and landed in the center of Mokotow (you have not yet been to any movie in the exact center of Mokotow (Neighborhood within 1km radius of the huge shopping center - Mokotow), and several other districts in the business part would think that he is in the very center of Warsaw. And each is richly equipped to make people's lives better, more comfortable, more pleasant. A few more cool neighborhoods are waiting for you to get to know them(but don't walk, as is often the case, only along random , side streets and you pass often the coolest places :D )

I`m a woman, so maybe that's why I had such feelings there, besides, my friends warned me not to go there alone in the evenings because there are many dangerous neighborhoods there (quite a few people of gypsy origin - who are aggressive when you refuse to give them money). Maybe the situation has changed now (I don't know), but distaste remains.
    I always felt safest in the old town, even at night, a beautiful atmospheric place where you can easily fall in love. Although personally I prefer a place where there is a lot of nature... and there is above all a square with a lot of buildings (including a castle)... That second mall/shopping center was really cool looking! and the sky is gorgeous. It sounded a little windy earlier.
    And it's nice to wake up in the morning and be happy about where you live.
    I'm not unhappy where I live. I miss Boston. But not the weather.
    But overall, there are a lot of things here that are great. Okay it's 90 something degrees. But a big swath of the country is really a whole lot hotter than that right now. 107° where my friend lives, a hundred degrees in Minnesota. think of it! *Minnesota* It's not even July. I have ducks in my backyard and no one is turning me in to the police for having ducks. I took a sparrow to the vet in Massachusetts and she confiscated it saying I was not allowed to have wildlife. turns out sparrows are legal to have as pets. They are not indigenous to the United States and are not protected under whatever... But I shouldn't have 15 ducks in my backyard. Don't worry. hopefully we will be back down to 6 pretty soon. My neighbor has three chickens. across the street they have escaping chickens. found one in the front yard one day. And this is the suburbs. So that's a good side of Florida. We don't live in an HOA. That's a good thing. We live in an elevated area where it doesn't flood when there's a hurricane. That's a good thing. We have a roof over our head. That's a great thing in the US. housing prices are way up. employed people are losing their apartments. I have a car and a place to put it. They don't make me have it inspected every year. My neighbors are nice people.
    the public library system is awesome. You can order books from the entire country online, or DVDs or whatever and pick them up in a drive-thru.
    It's not a good place for pedestrians. I think more pedestrians are killed in Florida than any other state. I think I looked it up. The public transit system is awful. the newspaper did an exposé.
    I miss Boston. There are many colleges and people from all over the world. But otherwise it's good here. (But if anyone asks me where I'm from, I say Boston. Florida has a reputation that just doesn't apply to who I am. (And no I don't mean long-winded ;) ))

    I'm flying into Krakow on Aug 22. I'll be in Europe for about 3 months. First place I want to go is Kremenchuk Ukraine to see friends that live there. I am quite aware of the danger(Viet Name Veteran-two deployments) I am going as a tourist. I have reservations in Kremenchuk for two weeks--and can extend them(a border crossing requirement). I also have a hotel for the first night in Krakow. Also have the necessary health insurances for both IN Ukraine and most/all of Europe. Been vaccinated for Covid-19. I have two questions: 1) Are inexpensive cell phones available with SIM cards for Poland. (i'll buy another SIM for Ukraine) 2) Where would you recommend I cross the border to Ukraine and best way to get to the crossing? I will of course buy you a nice coffee. Pete

    • @rabomarc
      @rabomarc 2 года назад +4

      Can’t answer the 2nd question but will try the 1st one. You can bring any unlocked phone to Poland (is locking phones by carriers is even a thing anymore?) and buy a SIM card from any carrier very easily. Since you’ll be arriving in Krakow, I presume you’ll be staying somewhere in the center/historic part. Then the easiest way would be to go to Galeria Krakowska - a big shopping mall right next to the central station. A few of major carriers have their stores there (T-Mobile, Orange, Play). You can buy a prepaid SIM card there. An unlimited calls and texts plan with a lot of internet (10-20GB) on a prepaid costs about 25-30PLN (which is like $6-$7) per month. You just need to make sure that the prepaid SIM is topped up with enough money and activate a plan. When you leave and don’t want to use the card anymore, you don’t need to do anything. Mobile services in Poland are very cheap and of a really good quality. And if you need a phone, there’s a big store in Galeria Krakowska as well, Media Markt, which has a big selection of phones of all types, from the most basic to ‘flagship’ ones. I suggest going there rather than getting a phone from a carrier because it’s going to be cheaper in 9 out of 10 cases.

      You can buy prepaid simcards everywhere in Poland (every Żabka, small grocery store you will find at every corner) and if you need a phone, any market or small GSM will have some cheap ones (every major city has a mall just in the centre, easy to find). Remember that you need to register the sim card, but shop assistant at Żabka will do it for you in 5 minutes. As for the crossing into Ukraine, any will do. I used to live close to Hrebenne, but perhaps the easiest will be Medyka or Korczowa, both lead towards Lviv, there are buses and trains taking you there from Poland. Cheers and good luck!

    Muranów is nothing new,. First of all the name is old, it comes from a famous Murano island which is next to Venice. Famous because of the glass they were manufacturing in medieval and there lived some of these Italians in Warsaw then, in a "Villa Murano"... Muranów most of all for me, as a native Varsovian is a place where the Jewish quarter and then the ghetto was. The strange slopes and hills you can see there are just the rubble, the remains of destroyed Warsaw ghetto covered by soil and post war construction.

      Actually I cannot agree, for example Warsaw is probably safer now than it ever was. For example when my mum studied in Warsaw the old town area was considered dangerous so you would not typicaly go there after night. Today everyone goes there and it is safe. I come from Łomża and it is also much safer today than it used to be in let's say the 90s. When I was at school it was really dangerous to go after dark to the bus station in Łomża, today I feel safe there.
