  • On January 3, 2016, Ex. Westside Lumber Co. Heisler locomotive #3 (now RCBT #2) takes a surprise run on the Roaring Camp and Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad after the more used Shay #1 is in the shop for repairs. Also featured in this video is the rarely used Kahuku Balidwin 0-4-2T #3 switching cars in the yard while being test-ran after having some minor work done. This was also the first test of Trevor's new camera, a Panasonic GH4 DSLR that he has started using for video. This has improved our quality greatly allowing us to bring you more video with even better quality. It was a very action packed day at Roaring Camp that you don't want to miss!

    I rode behind the Dixiana Shay in 1967. I rode behind the Tuolumne Heisler in 1975. I enjoyed both rides greatly. I recommend this railroad to everyone.

    I can now see why they add the plymouth to the back. It helps keep the Heisler from slipping and probably also helps keep the surging down.

      Yeah. It is a cool oldest Heisler in the world locomotive at Roaring Camp.

    That Crosby 3 Chime on Heisler 2 just sounded like Little River Railroad 110’s whistle!

    Many thanks for taking the time making this video. Amazing details, scenery and of course this unique loco. I ordered a model H0 Heisler and now I know how they really sound and move.

    Fantastic video! Loved the under the locomotive shot.. that was really impressive. That's a big load for that little engine to deal with, slipping on the wet rails.

      I’m glad I was able to see this Heisler and Tank Engine here at Roaring Camp back in May 1st and October 29th 2022.

    Thanks! Always wanted to see a Heisler hard at work, and this old girl is really earning her keep. If memory serves, Heisler's aren't' geared as low' as Shays, and have a higher top speed, correct?

    • @armagonarmagon3980
      @armagonarmagon3980 7 лет назад

      That is correct. In trade-off, though, Heislers have trouble pulling the same tonnage as a Shay.

    Is there some sort of noise restriction which causes the engineers to like barely tug at the whistle, cause they aren't blowing them at all, maybe its cause of the kids? Idk

    • @TreefrogflagProductions
      @TreefrogflagProductions  3 года назад +1

      There are neighbors nearby and kids on the train. There are a lot of reasons why the whistle isn't wailed on. Also certain engineers don't like blowing the whistle loud there. Everyone has their own personal preference.

      It’s probably because Tuolomne was originally designed with a hooter in mind.

      The Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia and the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad in Washington both have three-truck Heislers in operation.

      There is Shay #7 “Sonora”. It’s the only geared engine at Roaring Camp that is a Three-Truck.
