On Thursday July 10, Santa Cruz Portland Cement #2, The Chiggen, was steamed up for a shakedown run on the Santa Cruz Big Trees and Pacific Railway. Once running, this train made it all the way out to Wilder Ranch where the train would ultimately go during the weekend's runs. This video has many shots of this as well as shots of the regular narrow gauge and beach train operations. This was such a fun day, and it was only a precursor to the actual runs! As usual, another excellent video from Treefrogflag Productions. I used to live up near Santa Cruz and it was killing me that I couldn't watch this major event in person. Your video helped ease that pain a lot. Thanks.

Can passengers still get rides in open gondolas ? A lot of heritage RRs make you ride in a enclosed Pullman...I wont even bother if that's the case might as well be riding behind an Amtrak or diesel-electric.

Yes they do. Roaring Camp has open cars on every train that does out. Diesel or steam.

Why is the rr2600 following the steam engine train?

    • @TreefrogflagProductions

2600 was there to pull the train back up to camp, or if #2 couldn't pull the grade on her own. Due to how recently the engine had been restored, the steam crew was concerned about the engine's bearings overheating on the steep grades found on the SCBG.
