7 years in Thailand and I still have the AT&T phone number that I've had forever. I pay about $75/month to keep it. I have to use it to receive a code 1-3x per year. I just consider it part of the cost of living abroad. Think of it as a tax. I also use my sister's address as my physical address in the US. She moved from California to Nevada a couple of months ago so I had to go update my address in a number of places, particularly credit cards of which I still have 2 US credit cards. My CA drivers license expires next year and I will let it expire. I don't want CA to have any reason to believe I still have ties to the state since I stopped paying CA taxes in 2019. I have 3 bank accounts in the US. My main bank doesn't have my Thai address.
This past year I've had to get two new US credit cards. In both cases I had to have the credit card sent to my US address and then my sister would send it to my Thai address.
A state ID? Hmm . . . hadn't thought of that. I'm not sure I can get a NV drivers license using my sister's new address but maybe an ID? I'll have to look into that.

Marty, question about phone. Which plan are you on that you use with the phone? I was going to switch to Magenta International plan with T-mobile, but they have a rule that cancels the plan if they don't detect your cell ID at a stateside cell tower within 90 days. So for traveling the plan would be great but not for moving. So I'm stuck trying to figure out another plan that doesn't cancel.

One tip is to renew ones DL just before one leaves for PH. In Texas, a renewed license is good for 8 yrs now. Also renew a passport just before moving, ad its good fir 10 yrs.

I was just in the USA and am back in the Philippines. I got a Tello esim while there and I use that number here to receive texts from banks in the USA, Capital One being one of them. I can also text USA numbers with the esim. Cost between $5-15/month.

That's surprising to hear. If you are in the Philippines when Capital One sends you a text, isn't that still over wifi? I thought Gio mentioned that Capital One wouldn't allow receiving texts over wifi?

Here is an issue every US ex pat needs to think about, because it is coming. The US dollar is going to be replaced as the reserve currency. I think this happens before 2030. That can wreak havoc for ex pats living abroad on SS or retirement income. Maybe ex pats can discuss strategies to protect themselves in case this happens.

Depending on the state you would like to keep your drivers license in if you don't want to pay state income tax in that state be careful. Most states ask if you are a resident or ask for an instate address before issuing or reissuing a drivers license. That might make you liable for state tax in their eyes. Also most large brokerage companies i.e., Schwab, Vanguard, will not accept an overseas address which can reek havoc on retirement plans. It requires an elaborate juggling act. This was a very good reminder video. Keep up the good work.

Most people don't know that you don't surrender you right to have a US drivers license if you live overseas.....Only if you move to another state (then you generally have 30 days to get the new state DL). All you need to do is to go to your local DMV and have them update your overseas mailing address. Some states like FL have a DMV portal where you can usually do change of address. I had a problem with the portal accepting the address. I physically went to the DMV and they were able to override the portal issue and had the address changed....so lesson learned there....

Really think about whether you want a US drivers licence. For me I want there to be no question that I'm an expat. Maintaining a drivers license makes that a bit mirky. My licence expired 7 years ago, I've never needed it. I use my brothers phone number on my BOA account and it's never been an issue. I need his assistance every few years when I get a new debit card. He keeps the card and gives me the details...only used for Amazon purchases. When he visits I make up for the inconvenience I've caused him.

Bank issues trying to use Canadian Credit cards booking flights while visiting PH was the 2 step security where they send you a code to your CAN. ph.# to verify, just like you were talking about. It was a huge hassle. I tried different airline providers apps like CheapoAir and for some reason they didn't need the 2 step process? There's different types of verification banks can offer like challenge questions for 2 step process which works as well. Great video Gio!!!

I kept a mailing address with Travelling Mailbox. And I kept my US phone. I pretty regularly get codes sent to my US phone that I have to type in to log in. Many places you have to enter a phone number on a web site and there's just no way to enter a non-US phone number. They have boxes for area code, exchange, and number, just no place to put a country code. And many ask for an address with a drop down for state, just no way to enter a non-US address.

regarding the drivers license, most states require some form of proof that you reside in that state (utility bill, rental agreement, pay stub, etc). my virtual postbox is in Texas and i see on their DMV site that all these docs are required. just wondering if there are easier states to get a license in.
also, regarding US phone number: Tello has been great for me, and very cost effective.

I always keep in the back of my mind that I am in a country that may have political unrest and I might have to bug out in short order . That's one reason why you don't invest more than you are willing to walk away from in a developing country. Keeping a savings or investment account in your own country is a smart thing to do as it is more like having piece of mind that you can restart your life if you need to in your own country. I would add 10 to 15 percent to your expectations because either inflation or just start up costs will hit you hard . Nothing wrong with having your eggs spread out into more than one basket.

Keep as much as you can in your home country. The Philippines only wants your money. Too much government issues with paperwork. For me, this is a holiday destination . Maybe once or twice a year. Bacolod has changed so much in 8 months . Prices are going up on everything. The construction of condominiums is everywhere. Jeepney are being forced out of business. Hence, more private cars. Gridlock is terrible as there's very few traffic lights. The pollution is getting worse. Best to never move permanently. Just get that romantic idyllic dream out of your head. The grass is not greener on the other side. 9 years of coming here has shown me the true story.

Yes, one needs a good bank. I get a new SIM card in each country I go to and my bank (USAA) sends the security codes to it. Therefore I don't need a USA telephone number. I don't need a mailbox either. I give my daughter's address to the few places that need an address, and she has never had to send me anything. Her address is my domicile, and I make sure my drivers licence has that address. When I go back to the States each year or two, I get anything renewed that I have to. I haven't yet felt the need to get a vpn.

So the travelling mailbox addresses works for your credit card? Did not know that, thought you needed a physical address in your name. LOL liked the Maya intro 'Hi!' lol...USA bank accounts are FDIC insured to $250,000, $500,000 if it is joint account and you are married, and Philippine bank accounts are only insured to (can't remember ) $10,000 US so not hard to decide if you want to keep a US account open. So can you have a mailbox address on your Drivers license or state id? Good video, thanks for the reminder of how to transition to living in the Philippines, Gio...Jim

And how I wish authorities would make it easer for natiional citizens to move to another country. It is quite a husttle dealing with banks, etc. Especially the banks but also with tax and ambassy. It is as if they don't want you to leave the country - which is actually the case in my belief.
A good example to add to this would be if you are married in a foreign country but not registered as such in your own country. What will you say to your national authorities. That you are married or that you are not married? It can be very challenging and stressful when renewing your passport or filling in tax papers, etc.
Plus I don't want to make you paranoid but it happens that authorities do check social media accounts from time to time. Talking about these matters could give some trouble if they find out. I know it sucks that we can't communicate openly but that is the prison world we live in.

If you are a US vet, get a Navy Federal Credit Union account. They are respectful and will openly tell you they DO NOT CARE where you live. You will, of course, need a US phone#. I use Mint. If I use wifi connect for international calling/text/data, it only costs me $15 per month. And always use a VPN.

Let's us know when you renew your driver's license if they allowed you to use your "virtual mailbox" (iPostal1, etc.) as your local USA domicile address? I've heard from some people that the DMV was able to tell it's not a physical address of a home and wouldn't allow the renewal.
That's disappointing to hear about Capital One giving you problems--that's one of my credit cards (with a very low interest rate) that I plan to take with me when I go to the Philippines. I'm hoping a T-mobile or MintMobile cell phone will fix that problem when overseas--do they realize that most of these phones connect via wifi to save on cellular rates? I wonder if they'd still deny the T-mobile phone when it's connected via wifi?

@@GiointhePhilippines Any suggestions as to what the rest of us should use for a valid physical address when living in the Philippines? If nothing is available that's valid to use, it looks like any move overseas will require a return to the USA at some point.

I literally got an iPostal1 address today. I’ve an app on my phone for a mobile phone number. Costs $5/year. Never an issue, thus far. How much does your US phone number cost ?

@GiointhePhilippines it work I was reading on reddit and a lot of people use it and it works but for it to work you need to have a us number first then port that number to Google voice so when you receive a message from your us number it will be forwarded to Google voice. It won't work with just a regular Google voice number

An American can enter Thailand visa exempt and then extend that 30 days.

I think there is another document you need to enter Thailand much like the Philippines has that e-travel.gov.ph form to fill out

I still have my bank account in the good ol' USA which my social security is deposited in. I have no bank accounts in the Philippines. No way. I also made sure my US drivers license didn't expire for another 5 years.
But none of my family members will allow me to use their US address.
    What a close supportive family.

Gio I have one question the forwarding mail. Do you put that address on your state ID card or just where you’re living right now in the United States and bring that over as back up ID and addresses don’t matter or do they??😀

I believe they accept a WhatsApp phone #, since it's the same as your original U.S. number.
