I've learned in my 4 months here, that even though many speak English, they REALLY don't understand what you're saying... We can talk about doing a, b and then c, and it's agreed upon... Later when it's time to do what was talked about, the initial; conversation is simply forgotten or ignored. It's as if we never talked about it at all.
Yep same here. So frustrating in the beginning. I started having her repeat back to me what we agreed on. That helps but only a little. I am guessing time or maybe.....just spit balling here I will try getting it on record so I can play back what we agreed. Honestly not sure how to totally fix the miscommunication thing. Repeating back did help, but still an issue. Not sure how she would feel about being recorded.
filipinos are a lot like hispanics, they dont think like "white people" think. this orderly sequential, main idea type of thinking is not how they talk to one another, in fact, it often comes across as preachy or even arrogant.@@timetosee9251
Yup. Needed to fill conversation with many questions to clarify communication. My Medellin girlfriends speak very little English. However, I find it easier to communicate with them than one of my Filipina girlfriends. For very important conversations, I use Google Translate.
I upset my Filipina one time when I told her that her handbag was 'fancy'. I could tell immediately she was hurt. She got tears in her eyes, so I asked her what I did. I finally got her to tell me that in her circle of friends at least that 'fancy' was a term they used for the really cheap crappy knock offs from China. Totally flabbergasted me.
Yes, a lot of these woman from the Philippines don't have the best understanding of English vocabulary and therefore take things as negative or bad rather than to just assume what was said is positive since it's coming from their relationship partner.
they certainly use words in unusual ways. for example, they often call themselves "simple" to mean not uppity or high maintenance, but to us westerners, simple sounds like a self-insult lol
The humor I think is them not having a good grasp of the English language on a deeper level. Most American humor is sarcasm, which requires knowledge in multiple topics and being able to combine them together to get the humor in it. We also twist words to mean something else, as where they takes words for their literal meaning, so the humor in it is lost. Sure, many speak English, just don't expect to have a deep philosophical conversation, think of it more like having a conversation with a child, before a Filipino gets bent out of shape, NO, I'm not saying they're children, I'm saying the level of the conversation will need to be basic, not using big words or topics that require a deep thought. That's OK, I know it's NOT their 1st language and don't expect them to speak/understand it perfectly, I've spoken it all my life and I'm not perfect at it.
I told the joke to a Filipina that I saw Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (IZ) gave on a video. She just didn't get it at all. And it was simple language. Here's the joke: 3 ducks got busted and had to go before the judge. The judge asked the first duck her name and why was she before the court. She said my name is 'Quack' and I got busted for blowing bubbles in the pond. The judge sentenced her to community service. The 2nd duck appeared before the judge. He asked her name and why she is before the court. She said my name is 'Quack Quack' and I got busted for blowing bubbles in the pond. Community service for her. When the 3rd duck appeared before the judge, the judge said, "let me guess, your name is 'Quack, Quack, Quack'? The duck responds, "No your honor, my name is 'Bubbles'
Like you said for a while. The most common is when they are on a call or doing something and they say I’ll call you or get back to you later. What is later? I’m thinking end of day but it could mean anything. End of day or 5 minutes. That’s later. 😂. So stay cool. Be patient and try to nicely explain her narrowing down a window of later. ✌️
Geo. I am a Filipino and living in USA for over 50 years, I agree it can be a mis understanding. for example: if you say "I'll see you later", Filipinos may mean this literarily and they may end up waiting for you until you come back..
The more you analyze their behavior, the more you see the reasons for widespread poverty. I mean I can schedule 3 appointments here and can be reasonably sure I'll be able to clear all three and go buy some part for the shop. In the PH - FORGET IT. VERY lucky if you can get one done. So everything takes days instead of hours and it scales up in time: one week here, a couple of months in PH.
One of my favorite jokes is in the checkout stand. The cashier says, “Sir your total is xxx”! I give them the serous look and ask, “Is it ok to pay you next week”? Some of the reactions are priceless.
Meh! You expect them to understand your idiomatic expressions, everyday jargons, sarcasms, slangs, etc. when they only know book learning? I would understand if the woman you are talking to was exposed heavily to americans, have been to the US, or read extensively american books as well as modern literature. Just think about it, you just know basic tagalog and they would be throwing at you puns, sarcasm, tagalog slangs, etc., would you like them to think that you are hard of understanding, humor or just plain stupid because you keep misunderstanding them?
Picked her up one evening from her job and she always texts asking if I’m there already before she comes out. One time she asked are you outside? I said no I’m in the car. She didn’t get it at all and got mad.
Gio, many of us here in PH owe our ease of transition to your videos and can’t thank you enough. I’ve been here 6-months and nearly everything I gleaned from you and others on YT was accurate and helpful. Having said that, I don’t agree with the statement that “everyone speaks English here.” One of the biggest surprises was my inability to communicate with the locals effectively. I would say most people can read English as all the signage is English and many people under the age of 40 can speak some basic English but nearly all choose not to. A person can speak enough English to do their job but any extra curricular conversation is typically met with blank stares… Thanks for all you have done to help us newbs out!!
Wow Exotic who would have known...just asked my Filipina wife and she said yep, means Panget/ugly. Our fights have always come from misunderstanding of language meanings and some cultural differences, but they are never long and I need to slow down and communicate better! Thanks for the share Gio!
My experience has been that most filipinos speak broken english. My experience is from Dagupan in the north, Manila, to Pagadian in the South. It is difficult to speak to any filipinos about anything too complicated. Do not laugh at misspoken words. It makes Filipinos offended or sensitive about their fluency. Even asking them to repeat because it is too fast, they can be offended. Leave your sarcasm at home.
I like how they all say "Until Now" when they mean "Still". As in it started raining yesterday and been raining until now, when they mean it is still raining.
Sarcasm is my go to humor and I have long ago lost track of how many time it has gotten me into trouble. This is not just a Philippine issue (or even an Asian issue), many other countries do not understand sarcasm which is a shame because it is just SO ingrained in American culture. My son's wife is German and they do not understand it either. Fortunately, over the years she has gotten better at picking up on it.
"Silly" is another word that might be offensive. I learned that the hard way with my ex- Filipina. Everything was fine one minute, we were joking around and acting... well, silly. So, in jest, I told her she was silly and she got terribly offended and it took her a day to even allow me to clarify what I meant by it.
Very informative subject matter. Even though Filipinos can speak and understand English they use words and terms that have different meanings than Americans, some slight and some extreme. For example, they like to use the word "avail". Americans don't really use this word, but in the Philippines it means to take advantage of their discounts and promotions. Another is "house and lot", which kinda drives me crazy because when you buy a house the lot must come with it obviously, so it's really redundant (I'm sure there's extreme cases where you're buying the house separately from the lot but in that case then they can point it out). The word "batch" in the Philippines is typically used to refer to a group of people or a graduating class year, as in "Batch 1985." In the US it refers quantity of goods, not people. Restroom in the west is comfort room or CR in the Philippines. It's best to know certain words and terms mean differently in the Philippines so you don't look like a fool when you come here.
You look in the dictionary and "avail" actually means use or take advantage of. And so is "batch" it actually means how we use it according to the dictionary. We use english as defined by the dictionary. Of course, english is your language so as you use it, it morphs, changes meaning or become obsolete. Whereas, we who don't use them everyday will still use it as the dictionary says it means. As to the restroom vs comfort room, do you rest in restrooms? We filipinos take or ease our discomfort in comfort rooms.
What is often missed in a mixed nation relationship, regardless of what country you live in, is respect is a two way street. It has to be or quickly becomes a given, each isnt intentionally offending the other. When one takes what the other says to be negative, we need to have faith this just isnt so, simply because each already respects the other being in a relationship. Instead of going straight to offended, one must first ask for clarification to find out the lack of understanding. Without this sinple agreement, a relationship is doomed to fail or limp along in painful mediocrity.
Great topic, yes my filipina wife doesn't get my sarcasm sometimes, now I understand why. Did not realize not to use exotic and cute...lol. Did not realize joking with the cashier was considered flirting. Always try to be nice and ask the cashier his/her name if I cant read/see their nametag and thank them by name after helping me. My wife has gotten use to it, but now I understand why she thought it was so strange when I first started going out with her in the Philippines! Would never flirt with a girl other than my wife...lol Thanks for letting me know these things Gio, good video....Jim
One phrase "up to you" threw me off when I asked a filipina if she'd like to go out sometime. I took it that she wasn't up for it, but found out it was her way of saying where and when.
Sarcasm miscommunication man my girlfriend driving me crazy I learn to shut up and enjoy my time to myself during those Tampo times. Oh and her thinking she knows everything when she obviously doesn’t know about certain subjects like house construction electricity etc.
awright, the english spoken by filipinos is just hard to define, because what they say, and what you hear, and vice versa isn't the same thing, its probably somewhere around a 3rd grade english command, but bc they throw around some english words,,, well thats usually about a 2 amp english circuit breaker,,, so when you come back with 10amps of english,,,, guess what,,, smoking circuit....
Just think that it is the english during WW2 as taught by the american GIs and teachers at the time with a sprinkling of modern english lingo that penetrated their conciousness due to social media. Also, most probably it would be a sentence in the local language that they translated in their head before saying it. Not really conducive to perfect english as english is an SOV language and the filipino language is a VSO language. There is also thatt hey really haven't mastered english as they only get to practice it maybe a few sentences a day during elementary to college. try to understand them by putting yourself in their stead trying to speak tagalog to them, remember they are far ahead of you when it comes to understanding/speaking each others language.
In Indonesia when they say "yesterday" it doesn´t always mean the day before today. It can be days before. Also when they say "now" doesn't always mean at the spot in the current moment. Now can mean 15 minutes from now. Or when they say "I am there" doesn't always mean they are there right now. It can mean they arrive there later. 30 minutes or so. It all can be confusing and annoying sometimes.
I told the joke to a Filipina that I saw Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (IZ) gave on a video. She just didn't get it at all. Here's the joke: 3 ducks got busted and had to go before the judge. The judge asked the first duck her name and why was she before the court. She said my name is 'Quack' and I got busted for blowing bubbles in the pond. The judge sentenced her to community service. I understand saying somebody is a bit of a tomboy would be a complete no no. One I experienced on a trip with my ex girlfriend to a waterfalls which is different but not offensive is cottage. We were asked if we wanted a cottage and I was thinking why do we need to to rent a beautiful thatched property by the falls.
Interesting video, Gio. I wonder if Australians ever used the phrase "let's just be mates" when on a 1st date with a woman from the Philippines and not wanting to continue dating her but she takes it as a sexuall thing.
Circa 1980 my sister and I were working in a large silicon valley electronics testing facility. Large mostly pinay workforce. I yelled out to her my dad's pet name for her,"Hey Pookie!" 🤣🤣🤣
Hey Gio. I understand...my humor doesn't always go over well with my Filipina wife. I think its funny, but she says, "Huh?" Also, my friendliness is sometimes confused with flirting.
My 2 steady Medellín (MDE) girlfriends understand that to respect our relationship, they do contact me if going to be more than 10 minutes late for our date. Normally, they are on time or a few minutes early. During my past 3 years, I’ve been enjoying joy, happiness and love doing adventures with one or the other in Colombia; I have not experienced the Filipina style “tampo”. I did experience tampo in the Philippines. Thank you for your RUclips interview with Steven and getting me his contact. He introduced my two MDE girlfriends. I’m age 80 and they 33 & 40; svelte and physically fit. Tampo likely is a Filipina cultural feminine behavior.
I was chatting with one Filipina and she told me something funny. I start tolaugh and say "Give me a break". She drop the call and was angry with me. After long discussion she unterstood that its a different meaning 😒😒
“For awhile”: fortunately, in my extensive covid period research on the Philippines prior to my first trip there, I learned of this “phrase” as used there. Heck, for starters, I struggle to even create a grammatically correct sentence with it on my own! No problem for me making one with “in awhile”; anyhow… I could, such as “we’re going to still be on this bumpy road for awhile - we won’t be on paved road anytime soon”. THUS, when someone initiates a statement to me with, “for awhile, sir”, I first assume they’re colloquially just omitting the first part of the sentence: “You’re going to be here…”. IOW, hunker down, this will take quite awhile, or at least this won’t be in and ou, right quick, if you will! HOWEVER, as I mentioned, when I arrived in Pi I was savvy to this. When a customer service rep said “for awhile please sir”, I knew she meant “I’ll be right with you, sir - just a moment, please”. Ya, you gotta learn. Also, sometimes I find I have to just drop my expectation for full understanding of what someone is trying to convey to me. ’m having a concurrent such conversation right now online with a Filipina friend: Typically, we check the time for the other before calling or messaging. However, last night I did’t awaken but apparently received a brief greeting from her at 3:30am my time, which was out of character - went like this so far (times are all here in west) 3:30am my time Hello [my name] So at 10:30am after sleeping in on a day off I reply Hi - everything ok? 12:30pm my time she replies Of course, yup. And you there? Now, let’s just start with the nuanced meaning of “of course” for native English speakers, when the other replies to an enquiry with “of course”! Much like Geo’s airport announcement example for “indefinite period” NOT being synonymous with TBD, and does convey “may be cancelled”, “of course” doesn’t just mean “yes” - it suggests the enquirer is being shamed a bit for asking a question they should already know the answer to! “Of course, what a stupid, foolish question!” ( exaggeration included to make the subtle nuance meaning in west clear) However, I let “of course” go, because stuff like this happens so frequently, I find I need to just decide or realize 1) when is and isn’t an Eng teaching moment (she wants me to help her with English), and 2) when to just drop: Me: I asked because your message was 3:30am Her: I remembered you 7:37pm here and sent you a note for I might forget to message you Me: Ha ha I don’t understand, but it doesn’t matter👍 Me: I checked if you sent me any message and found nothing so I message you immediately when I got home last night. Real quick, 2 last points to make. 1- We’re just friends, this Filipina and I, with no expectations apart from the norm set of contacting at time the other is likely up. 2- I still don’t know what she really means but I do know it’s time to drop it and not ask further or will drive me crazy.
Yep, dry, sarcastic or dark humor doesn't always go over well or isn't understood as intended or at all. But to be fair, doesn't always go over well in the US or other countries either. What's great though is when you find those people that do get it :)
I agree I found that out the hard way with my wife to be she let me know real quick that what I said wasn’t funny. So I spent quite a bit of time apologizing so I can relate😢
One time i was meeting a filipina at the mall. I was already at the mall at the time her and i agreed upon when she texted me, "I'm coming a little later. " when i read that i'm thinking she's not coming right now and i'm thinking she's not even on her way because she told me she's coming a little later (not now) Now, what i think she was actually trying to tell me was that she was just coming a little late. To us westerners there is a difference between coming late and coming later.
English is actually a crazy language. How can a parkway be where vehicles drive and a driveway where cars park? People have noses that run and feet that smell. Read is both present and past tense but read differently. One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? Nope! And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? A house burns up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which an alarm clock goes off by going on. You people are lucky that you don't have to go through all these confusing contradictions that we non-english speakers have to go through. You have no right to compalin about our english speaking ability, lol.
It takes concern, effort, intelligence, and a bit of authority to estimate how long someone will have to wait. Add to those hurdles that Filipinos are inured to waiting as routine and it explains why it appears that “They just don’t care.”
Never say I don’t care. Example. She says “what do you want me to cook “ and you say “I don’t care “. Married to one 20+ years now and spent many days in the dog house early on because of that phrase. They take it literal and personal. You might as well have killed her kittens
I have found they call men the pronoun 'She' more than calling a girl a he. In Tagalog and Cebuano they don't have a different pronoun for the sexes. Both are called "Siya." thus the 'She' is more commonly used.
Been married to a filipina for 25 years . Sarcasm and jokes don't go to well . Some times It comes over rude . She hates like David Chapel and other comics on TV. She Says it makes no sense. Simple jokes are fine.
My ex only got upset when I teased her common expression that she used daily ( and this one) was one of hers she used that I used to pick on but in time I stopped because of TOMPO and slowly learned what to tease and have fun with and what to leave alone.
Joking is preferable when you know the person so well already. Being here in the US, joke with sarcasm is alive and i was able to adjust and swallow my consevativeness which most Filipinos have.
Thanks Gio, good video. I heard 2 things a while ago. Open the lights, we say turn on the lights. And something that made me laugh was they call the bathroom/ toilet, The comfort room. Why i don't know. 😅😅
The funny thing is, an open circuit in electrical would be the lights off and a closed circuit would be the lights on. They literally have it backwards.
I was at immigration yesterday, and an American guy gave a little slap on his girlfriend's bottom and said " let's go" . She absolutely exploded, last thing she said as they left " don't ever disrespect me again" 🤤
I love joking around but in the beginning this was a minefield. I quickly learned "joke lang" i actually say "joke la" that seems to help. I adapted my humor and now we can laugh together which is important to me. She likes comedy movies but not so much when i do it. Remember "joke la" that helps get her to smile or at worst ignore what you said instead of taking it personally. It is strange because her best friend is into rude as hell humor. Like straight out making someone feel like crap, but her friend gets very upset if I something back. Almost like you are rich, so i need to be take you down a peg or two. I have found Filipinos are better at joking among themselves than with foreigners. They get much more sensitive if its from a foreigner. Just a fact of life here. Also I think not enough emphasis is put on how many Filipinos only remember a little English. Only in tourist areas (big expat areas included) or big cities do "most" Filipinos understand English. In my wife's village, besides my wife, one guy understood enough English to actually talk to. Mostly its hey Joe and a word here or there. They all learn it in school but then rarely if ever use it. Like how much Spanish or French do you remember from high school (for Americans)? That level of understanding. They learn it for 8-10 years in school and then forget most of it. Only if they are in an area that uses it often do they remember it. You will hear them say nosebleed if you are talking too fast or too much English. They also have tagalish which uses a lot of English loan words, but its still different. Thats my experience so far anyway.
Very good points Gio. I know a few dozen American expats married to Dominican women in the province of Samana, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, and they all say the exact same things you guys say about Pinays...Four of my cousins are married to Filipinas in New York, and they are great ladies...they are very loyal, great moms, and that's a lot to begin with...Caribbean and American women think being a 304 is something to be proud of...I applaud sex workers but lets be real...societies are made up of good marriages...good marriages create good kids...good kids make better adults, generally speaking and are less likely to be idiots who follow whatever they are told...
Just remember never say anything positive about another female Filipina no matter their age young or old...It's always taken as a personal insult! And yes I am Scottish all our humour is sarcasm and piss taking. They never find any of it funny. I learned to stop teasing them. We think its funny they take it as a wounding insult.
Hello Gio, On My last visit to the Philippines. We traveled 13 hours on a cargo ship and then two more hours by bus to Dipolog City. We got in a tricycle and Lucy was talking to the Driver. Then the Driver asked Me if 100 Peso was ok for the ride to the Hotel. I said yes and when We got to the Hotel, I could tell that Lucy was mad about something. She was mad at Me for saying yes to the Driver when She already told Him NO. I told Her that I am a Dumb American that only speaks English and that I can't understand Bisayan. We both laughed about the misunderstanding.
You’re a better man than I, sir! She was upset with you? Why wasn’t she upset with the driver and why did she let you pay more than she’d already negotiated (in bisaya)? This would drive me crazy haha
As a filipina, i really dont like a guy hearing "F" words. Even if its just expressing excitement or whatever. Or a guy talking so loud. Because you cant hear me shouting so loud, if i am mad. I want a ❤️-💗 talk. And i dont like hearing example. Can you get it? Should it always have Can you get it for me please. Sounds very pleasant. Just sharing
I appreciate your comment and sharing, ma’am! You know, I think the 1 month in the Philippines in 2022 was the least swearing, cuss words of my life! Filipinos speaking English don’t swear much I find! Awesome
My brother was talking to the cashier. The rest of us finished the self check out and they were still talking. Definitely seemed like flirting, but we know he is on the autistic spectrum and was only being nice. It started with an "how is your day". Haha😂 it was sweet sight to see.
So it could be the location your in too that can affect the translations. My wife says that lots of Americans have been using the word 'cute' in the Philippines for a long time and she does not consider it demeaning at all. @BruceCinader mentioned the word 'careless' means whore but she says no, she knows what that means and does not think of it as body shaming. Sometimes I think my wife doesn't really understand something I'm saying and remembers a different meaning for a word that she learned in school. Lot of times she hears me saying something different than I actually said which has gotten me upset at times. Just realize why she is not always up to speed with the language and grant her leeway, after all, she is my wife, if I can't forgive her who will. Definitely a lot of things come to mind. Have to get to bed, up early tomorrow, laterz Gio....Jim
I try not to use any phrases that will confuse my girl like one time we needed to pay for our daughters education & I told my girl what the damage was,& it got to the point where she asked me what had been damaged lol had to tell her it's a slang for "How much" she's trying bless her to understand some slangs but it's better that a girl to be curious & ask rather than one that takes things as an insult.
When my Filipina wife first arrived here she did not understand you can't use a hard plastic dish brush to violently scrub and bang the insides of a glass coffee pot. She of course shattered it. I said she need to be less careless. She cried and acted like I said something very wrong. It turns out calling someone careless is, understood to mean careless with your body, or in other words calling her a whore. She thought I was so mad over the breakage that I was calling her a whore. I had to explain what careless means here in the USA.
No s? “Careless” implies with body, in turn whore? THAT’s going on my new NB alt definitions and uses list! Anybody got more? I know “already” just means happened and not necessarily earlier than expected! I want to make a complete working list.
I’m happy to learn about “careless”, but still confused with the story: why wouldn’t you say “be more careful” rather than the double neg “be less careless” - who says that? Also, it’s a also a different shot in the west - you called her “careless”?
You are 100% right sir, belive me my filipina give me tampo..many Times, but now its cool..its only take 3 years..😂 now she understand...exept IF look other filipina cute butt...😂
Ambiguous is a biggie. Our humor versus theirs is very different. We use plays on words or light sarcasm where as they will use a situation to create a funny circumstance. It only becomes trouble when the two dont explain to each other. Been thete done that and learned the need for good communications.😅
I told a Filipina that I like "feminine" women and her reaction was "😮". She assumed I like women with big boobs, skimpy skirts with big ass. I mean I do like that too but that's not what meant 😅
Both of your first two examples weren't confusing to me at all. Exotic though is quite different. Exotic means like whore, dirty, perverted, probably derived from Exotic Dancer... Sarcasm can actually get you arrested. If you make a sarcastic comment that seems to be going over poorly, say Joke Lang, and that will possibly resolve the problem.
Gio, basically you are saying that if you have a girlfriend, wife, and/or companion avoid as much as possible having a conversation with unknown women. That is pretty much the standard rule for men with all unknown women that is not their wife, girlfriend, and/or companion.
They definitely don’t get jokes based on play on words in the English language. Sarcasm, witty humor, etc. I used to think for example, the princess bride was an excellent date movie. Bc it’s so funny and quotable. Or the emperors new grove, or Monty python and the holy graile, they just stare and don’t get it. It’s not funny to them. Or they’ll laugh at something else but not get the humor from the lines and dialogue. The jokes. Probably better to just watch an action movie or romance movie for a date night.
Sarcasm, dead pan humor, and a lot of humor is a function of culture. You could take someone who is perfectly adept at english but not that expose to the west will misunderstand or not get the humor.

Not sure how she would feel about being recorded.
broken enrish at best
filipinos are a lot like hispanics, they dont think like "white people" think. this orderly sequential, main idea type of thinking is not how they talk to one another, in fact, it often comes across as preachy or even arrogant.@@timetosee9251
Yes, a lot of these woman from the Philippines don't have the best understanding of English vocabulary and therefore take things as negative or bad rather than to just assume what was said is positive since it's coming from their relationship partner.
really,,,,she is that sensitive,,,,my gosh,,,,,needs to grow up@@napoleonmdusa8877
Correct. Fancy to us means fake.
Then you guys should actually learn English ....@@concepciondental7953
they certainly use words in unusual ways. for example, they often call themselves "simple" to mean not uppity or high maintenance, but to us westerners, simple sounds like a self-insult lol
Relationships without sarcasm, are like sex without orgasm 😂😂
Here's the joke:
3 ducks got busted and had to go before the judge.
Yes = maybe or no.
Appointment = maybe sometime with a few days.
Ready tomorrow = we'll be ready tomorrow to tell you "ready tomorrow" again.
"Jokes could be considered flirting, exotic isn't a good term..." Wow. Insightful. Thanks for sharing.
Yea never say your an exotic beauty lol
You are absolutely right about sarcasm.
My wife, (in the US) absolutely doesn’t like sarcasm.
A person can speak enough English to do their job but any extra curricular conversation is typically met with blank stares…
Thanks for all you have done to help us newbs out!!
Thank you, I appreciate it.
Humour and sarcasm is very culturally located.
Leave your sarcasm at home.
my pet peeve with Filipinos is they tend to slur their words.
Absolutely. I dropped sarcasm completely not long after arriving in SE Asia.
I like how they all say "Until Now" when they mean "Still". As in it started raining yesterday and been raining until now, when they mean it is still raining.
Haha I only JUST got that! I thought they meant “to date” or “so far” - “still” makes so much more sense! Haha
"together with" is the one that gets me, which is redundant.
I Called My Filipina Silly And She Thought It Was A Very Bad Thing
Ok.. never use sarcasm, especially when resolving semantics with logic.. got it! 😅👍
Trying to use logic? Oh boy, you really are gonna get yourself in trouble! 😂😂😂😂
Would never flirt with a girl other than my wife...lol
Thanks for letting me know these things Gio, good video....Jim
Sarcasm does not cross langue and culture very well...
One phrase "up to you" threw me off when I asked a filipina if she'd like to go out sometime. I took it that she wasn't up for it, but found out it was her way of saying where and when.
Very useful
Most Filipinas are not decidion maker
Exactly!
@@abc-mf4jnex wife numero uno
I get in trouble everytime i say ! OH! POOR BABY ! THEY RESPOND:are you calling me poor ?
Also very emotional when they don’t truly understand what u say they assume without getting clarity!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes you don’t even have to say anything… just a look, can result in tampo.. or hard feelings….walking on eggshells to avoid conflict.
Here's the joke:
3 ducks got busted and had to go before the judge. The judge asked the first duck her name and why was she before the court. a different take on the Dirty Johnny and Blueberry Hill joke!
We wouldn't use this phrase in that context
Circa 1980 my sister and I were working in a large silicon valley electronics testing facility. Large mostly pinay workforce. I yelled out to her my dad's pet name for her,"Hey Pookie!" 🤣🤣🤣
Hey Gio. I understand...my humor doesn't always go over well with my Filipina wife. I think its funny, but she says, "Huh?" Also, my friendliness is sometimes confused with flirting.
Same here lol
thats what happens when u date young immature girls,,,,they are like kids,,,,
My 2 steady Medellín (MDE) girlfriends understand that to respect our relationship, they do contact me if going to be more than 10 minutes late for our date. Normally, they are on time or a few minutes early. During my past 3 years, I’ve been enjoying joy, happiness and love doing adventures with one or the other in Colombia; I have not experienced the Filipina style “tampo”. I did experience tampo in the
Philippines. Thank you for your RUclips interview with Steven and getting me his contact. He introduced my two MDE girlfriends. I’m age 80 and they 33 & 40; svelte and physically fit. Tampo likely is a Filipina cultural feminine behavior.
As sarcastic as I am I learned the best phrase I ever was told. Just Joking
’m having a concurrent such conversation right now online with a Filipina friend:
Typically, we check the time for the other before calling or messaging.
However, last night I did’t awaken but apparently received a brief greeting from her at 3:30am my time, which was out of character - went like this so far (times are all here in west)
3:30am my time
Hello [my name]
So at 10:30am after sleeping in on a day off I reply
Hi - everything ok?
12:30pm my time she replies
Of course, yup.
“Of course, what a stupid, foolish question!” ( exaggeration included to make the subtle nuance meaning in west clear)
However, I let “of course” go, because stuff like this happens so frequently, I find I need to just decide or realize 1) when is and isn’t an Eng teaching moment (she wants me to help her with English), and 2) when to just drop:
Me:
I asked because your message was 3:30am
Her:
I remembered you 7:37pm here and sent you a note for I might forget to message you
Me:
Ha ha I don’t understand, but it doesn’t matter👍
Me:
I checked if you sent me any message and found nothing so I message you immediately when I got home last night.
I’m not a big fan of for awhile but we need to pack or patience when we come to the Philippines.
"for a while" is actually honest because most always it will take some time. Your "one moment please", or "one second/ minute" is a lie.
And never ever call the waitress a hostess or ask for a napkin
the model pictures are a nice view with the expressions that fit the topic
AI pictures
One time i was meeting a filipina at the mall. I was already at the mall at the time her and i agreed upon when she texted me, "I'm coming a little later. " when i read that i'm thinking she's not coming right now and i'm thinking she's not even on her way because she told me she's coming a little later (not now)
Now, what i think she was actually trying to tell me was that she was just coming a little late.
Filipino ARE VERY literal PEOPLE ... NO SLAG LOL
I here some say, I just get home now. I will went to the store later. My mother, he will meet me there.
My slang has gotten me in trouble with my wife more than once lol
My ex only got upset when I teased her common expression that she used daily ( and this one) was one of hers she used that I used to pick on but in time I stopped because of TOMPO and slowly learned what to tease and have fun with and what to leave alone.
Good point Gio! I suppose that is all part of the game too, thanks for sharing : )
She absolutely exploded, last thing she said as they left
" don't ever disrespect me again" 🤤
Most women would not accept that type of behavior in public, Filipina or not.
Yea , the thing that will get in trouble is joking in public
I stopped telling jokes. 😂
Your right about our humor, sarcastic or not, and your about they don't like Exotic. Tampo for sure
FilAm here. For a while means to us a short time or shorly. We’ve been taught in school incorrectly.
How to maintain your Philippine, what year model do you have?
Planning. American means doing. Filipinas mean dreaming. I'm planning on visiting the Philippines. It was totally misunderstood. 😂😂😂
Thank you for the information
You bet!
Awesome
Oh yeah. My girl hates the F word. That and me drinking Red Horse
That might especially be for difficult for Australisns F is used as and expression of suprise and amusement in our culture not insult
My brother was talking to the cashier. The rest of us finished the self check out and they were still talking. Definitely seemed like flirting, but we know he is on the autistic spectrum and was only being nice. It started with an "how is your day". Haha😂 it was sweet sight to see.
So when my Filipina wife arrived in the USA I said I'm going to run to the store ...she says why run when u own a car
That made me smile 😊
Oh I found out my humor isn't well read with my friend , sooo I've learned don't try to be funny
More rules than a gremlin, you missed out don't feed them after midnight and don't get them wet, the last one I can't promise not to do.

Hi Gio
I found filipinos can sometimes missinterprate 😆as laughing at them meanly not as shared ammusemrent as we use it.
"Long time, already."
Filipinos usually don’t catch innuendos. my Filipino likes to sing I had fun explaining to her which she is really singing about
Is not about misunderstanding, its because they don't know properly English and terms !
Unavailable in the restaurant. I LoL ask what is available 😅
My advice to Filipinas when they speak or write is to make sure they get their verb tenses right.
Yep. sarcasm is low on the registry
They should use TBD to be determined
It's all common sense..I didn't get the problem..
"indeterminate" would better than "indefinite"
Same in Malaysia, but they LOVE Mr Bean.
I'm sure that Maya doesn't get sarcasm.. but other filipinas can unerdstand it... Be careful... LOL
I remember having to explain a few jokes😅
Typical Pinoy lingo
CR = Toilet
Mad = Angry
Bola-Bola = Bullshit
Green jokes/talk = Of sexual nature
Sarcasm, dead pan humor, and a lot of humor is a function of culture. You could take someone who is perfectly adept at english but not that expose to the west will misunderstand or not get the humor.
Has anyone noticed they dont recognise the word cunning a lot of times?
