- In this video I get to test the 4WD on this project and so far its working great. All the chains stretched rely bad causing one of the chains to skip teeth, but that can be fixed by just retightening the chains. I had to make a change to the gearing because on this project I'm more wanting to focus on low gearing because we have 4WD and bigger tires.

Measure the power steering unit you have installed now. I.E. how many amps is it pulling to steer your wheels. If you get the amp draw you can figure out the watts based off of the voltage of the electrical system. Watts = Amps x Volts. This should give you a starting point to work from.
From what I was just able to find, it's around 60 amps for draw. Assuming it's a 12v setup that's 720 watts.
There is other items to take into consideration. The stator/alternator on the engine. What is it's nominal output? There must be a balance for the entire electrical system. You can over tax it and let the smoke out..... Ask me how I know 🤣😜💨🍁
@Ratkill9000 going by what I could find the power steering motor is either 11V or 12V so it is either 660 watts or 720 watts
@@Ratkill9000 The power steering fuse is 50A on the prius.
Honestly, the watts isn't what matters. Measure the pressure it can put out. Who is saying the new higher wattage box will not be less efficent than the current one (more juice to make less force).
Dont forget chains jumping off problem needs addressed. Keep up good work bud, love this project, and this channel!🎉
Get some weld through primer. It will protect your work but you can still weld through it as the name suggests
You have reached a new level of bespoke workmanship, building your own door latch! Amazing stuff.
For the steering rack seals / boots , it would be a good idea to "vent" one side to the other... One boot to the other.
When these boots extend, air needs to get in, and when they retract, air needs to get out. If they are not perfectly sealed, they will pull water in when they extend.
One is extending while the other is retracting, so if you connect one boot to the other, with a 3/8 vent line for example, then the air from one will go into the other. The best way to do this would NOT be to puncture the boot itself, but to drill some vent holes in the body of the rack, and install some fittings and then attach a line.
Good idea
@@ratherBweldingChris A response from the actual Chris and not a scammer telling me to talking to them on telegram 🤣I'm honored ! Keep up the great work Chirs !
Great idea!
Chris use grafiet it’s a dry lubricant what you use for locks.
It doesn’t stick dirt too it.
Great build.
I would highly recommend PB Blaster garage door lubricant for your Heim joints. It dries and leaves a Teflon coating in the joint. Being a dry lube it doesn't collect dust because there's nothing to stick to.
and that's what we use for our pans, delightful. cast iron all the way
Now PLEASE build some chain and sprocket guards for the rear wheels.
Yes, I was going to say the same thing.
That part of the shock is called the gland nut. To figure the watts of the power steering, use an amp clamp to find its Amp draw. Then multiply times the volts. Example: 40amps x 12v is 240 watts.
Nice, that is how I was thinking of making the latches. You used square and I was thinking round for the striker. Do a bend in the arm and adjust the heim joint out to compensate.
You really gotta watch putting your arm out in a roll over. Keep hold of the wheel or grab your harness. Better than losing an arm. Stay safe
The Prius fuse for the power steering is 50 A, so 600W before the fuse burns, it would set the max wattage on the Power steering motor at 450-480W.
If you put a 40A fuse and it works you can see it blows if you turn side to side for a couple of minutes.
Steering arms should be somewhat level when sitting on the ground.
The more angle you have between steering box and wheel hub, the harder it is to turn. Plus more chance of binding.
You are so smart you skip the simple stuff, overthinker but we love ya
Finishline teflon dry lube is great for chains also as it is super slick without attracting dirt
Your vids are very inspirational and has inspired me to create things like this
Those handles look awesome great to see more on it 👌🏻
Think I would take all those hymn joints and drill a hole in them and tap threads in them to install grease fittings ,that’d help keep dirt away from the inside of them and keep them working smooth from now on , id stick with the steering unit you’ve got now that it’s working better after cleaning and living it, maybe put 1-2 grease fittings in it as well to be able to lube the inside of it without taking it apart everytime 👍🏼
Clever idea on those door handles, they are works of art.
Awsome to see another video on easily the best project you've ever done. Maybe put a snorkle on it so you don't hydrolock the motor and maybe even if you want, do a proper ultra 4 with real diffs and axals like some gq ones and drive shafts and a H-pattern shifter with a bigger Polaris motor in it, that would be awsome! Nice vid mate, cheers from Australia.
Honestly speaking I like all your projects. But this time it was like a dramma, how you so creative on that door latch the way you did it ummmmmm that was wonderful, full of fun to me I must say. You so creative dude, especially the way you did on the those handles and layout hey!! that was great,I smiled on my own whilst watching the episode.
Glad to see you back on this one! Doors and latches are awesome bro. You should do a permanent system for the vacuume hubs. The syringe thing is kinda temporary ish. Definitely need some sprocket gaurds too but im sure you got that planned already. Still my favorite vehicle by far!
Every detail. Done yourself. To an awesome standard.
Use an extreme performance marine grease designed for under water usage on outboard motors on your joints. It won't wash off. I have an old tube of saltwater marine outboard grease I use for almost everything. So sticky.
I thought we were about to see our first ad spot 31:00 LOL! I would have been proud.
For the Suspension joints id suggest either more constant maintenance or a dry lubricant like graphite if your worried about it attracting debris, Just my thoughts though. There is many ways to lube the joints and its more down to what suits you the best tbh.
You could drill and tap the outer part of the heim joints and install grease fittings or buy grease-able heim joints
Well you may not want to paint it but you can always clear coat it it doesn't really hurt it to clear coat it😮😊
If you use the heim joints with the red material in the middle instead of black they will last longer and be quieter. The ones with red material in the center are specific for off road suspension.
They are called nylafibre racing him joints. You can get them at Rodend supply. The extra you spend will be more than covered when you don't have to change them so much
The big projects are so much better than the bug
This is an incredible build!!! Please keep the videos coming for this build.
I believe a Prius power steering rack uses less then 600w because at 600w the 50 amp fusible link in the wire will open.
Maybe try Dry Graphite on the hymn joint. Maybe the dryness of the graphite would keep out the dust and dirt?
there's a product called "dry lube". it's a spray in a can. Love that stuff i used it on metal on metal parts a lot
I have a Nissan versa power steering in my baja bug and it moves my 33.5s easily. It was like 70 bucks from a junk yard. Also dry Teflon spray works great on hiems and doesn't attract dust
I won't lie that truck is sick I'd buy it
Yessir the mini throphy truck is back! i love it. Hi chris i wonder if you wanted to change the exhaust header layout to 4-1-2 configuration, current one sounds a bit odd in my opinion, i mean you have awesome custom 4WD offroad machine with 4 cylinder engine, i think having 4 to 1 header will make the engine sounds better.
For heim joint lube, a wax based lube won't collect dirt as badly. Id consider chainsaw bar oil, it will stay stuck and handle a lot of rain, water dirt etc. I'm basing this off of proper bike chain lubes for performance (wax) and reliability/winter-abuse(bar oil).
Try a dry spray on chain lube on your joints, works wonders for me.
Love this project! Such a beast
WD-40 also makes a PTFE dry lube in an aerosol can. Id use that lube before every outing or swap to sealed heim joints
#ratherBweldingChris More than any other channel I watch on YT I'm always mega disappointed when I here you say that's it for this video catch you on the next one 😢. I just want to see more straight away lol, I love watching how your mind works and watching you solve problems. Even something as simple as how the pull handle for the door looks its kinda crazy knowing you pretty much built this whole thing from your mind. Its Mad that there's only about 5/6 components on the whole vehicle you didn't build, wheels suspension engine seat. The rest is all you wish I had the space to even try. Love from the UK 🇬🇧
I think it makes more sense to fix the binding issue then to force the steering, the shock thingy is Called a Gland
You might look into chevy electric steering columns, depending if they have a higher power strength than the prius ones
Tap the hind joint with a grease fitting so it grease where it turn n move the most
Also, check out the steering assist from a Saturn. They are a little heavier vehicle.
You should use dry chain lubricant it goes on wet and then goes totally dry leaving behind a dry lubricant so it does not attract dust and dirt , only issue is it is not waterproof so would need re-applying after it all got wet
You should race that in the Vegas to Reno offload race.
Nice door latches. Smart feller
I think the weight of the locking slide plus handle will cause it to unlock under heavy braking and running over rough terrain. Just a thought.
You should put the stop strap all the way around the bottom and hing sides of the doors and apply the seal. It would all but eliminate vibration noise and if you ever skinned it you'd have the door seal done.
Get a spray with graphite in it for the heim joints
Amigo suas ideias são incriveis como sempre!!!
Boa sorte sempre!!!
Nice work
You can jet rubber boots for rose joints/heim joints
.magnetic pool gate Lock's . 🎉🎉 🎉work sick
use spray on graphite dry lubricant for the heim joints
Very interesting to watch you work. Always enjoy your vids
To estimate the prius power steering current use, reduce the fuse capacity until it pops, that will mean it uses more than that size and less than the preceeding one...
Just use a weld through primer so then you can modify, prevent rusting and you can just clean and paint later
THANKS
I use dupont non-stick dry film lubricant it goes on wet but almost instantly dries and works extremely well
You need fenders. Definitely take out the extra swivel in the steering shaft. That will help the steering a bit too. You might put some bars to protect the shocks in case you roll it again. You really need to get away from using chains and go to drive shafts.
Also do not be shy about just buying say a small pickup or car and gutting. Then you know you have things like the steering, suspension (which you can easily upgrade), breaks, transfer case, axels, drive shafts, engine, fuel system, cooling... You could strip the body off, simplify the electronics, maybe shorten the frame, make new bumpers, rock sliders, and skid plate, add a roll cage, put in a suspension seat and 5 point harness, add some trail lights... But put some fenders of some sort on it and have a decent muffler.
He likes building all that stuff anyone can buy it
I wouldn’t worry about the bigger steering pump. Find some kind of gaiter to go over the joints to keep the mud out.
So looks like the Prius normally draws 60 amps but could potentially get up to 100 watts. So with it being watts=amps x volts, your around 720 watts for the power steering setup currently.
Nice fabrication! Well done!
It is called a "gland". 😁
The fuse size I found for the Prius EPS is 60A. Assuming 20% amperage overhead and a running voltage of about 14V that would put the power steering at around 670W, and at 12V about 570W.
You live on another planet.
A limit strap is all you need up front
you ever get that buggy started yet lol cant wait see that beast run time for break
Just keep it lubed or put a pitcock or zert ( as you call it ), in the side, and use a little grease.
Heim joints with zurk fittings
Very impressed skills 💯💪
Should weld the flat stock door stop on inside
A waxed based chain lubricant is probably the best.
Hope that screw in the locking bolt doesn't vibrate lose and fall out when off roading due to being on bottom.
Just measure the current sant to the power steering.
It's good to see you still post man I remember watching you build drift tricycles n shit when I was 12 😂
Keeps hands and arms inside the cage. Good way to get busted up.
Видео как всегда на высоте 👍
put some sort of rubber boot on the Heim joints and pack it with grease.
Might want to drop that power steering mechanism down about 2 inches so you get a little bit more turning radius
I've never heard of a Prius power steering unit that was adjustable by voltage for more assist. A reostat inline with the supply should boost it,and removing the 3rd flex joint will make a diff. Good luck.
should keep old engine oil so you can just wipe over the frame and other parts to prevent rusting will need a good clean befor paint but its a good solution
Silly me thought you were gonna buy door latches , duh what was i thinking? We build our own stuff !
Might be worth putting the part numbers of the shock components on here incase anyone else that watches your channel is in need of them making it easier for them and they can pass it on to anyone else
Don't fix something what's not broken...at least brake it first😊 great channel ❤
Opel Corsa electrical powersteerings around here atleast go for around 100€ and they are very popular :)
They make rubber dust boots for heims now
use car ball joints on your tie rod ends
The 1000 dollar power steering column will handle 38 in tractor tires should definitely be enough
Take middle u-joint out of steering shaft
Should make it easier
Wasn't sure where you were going with that but it's ok
You need a slip joint on that steering shaft, and remove that extra u joint
They make a spray dry moly gun lube I use it on pump and pump actions guns , moly penetrates into metal great lubricant an also is a anti seizing and gaulding agent, sprays liquid drys almost immediately is a dark gray color
Chain wax because doesn't attract dirt. Walmart carries it too
Love it so much keep it up as always 💘
Prius powersteering is rated 60amps of maximum current draw. So quick math 12V*60A=720W
3:20 cylinder gland.
