This video and description contains affiliate links, which means that if you click on one of the product links, I’ll receive a small commission ( it does not make the product more expensive ). This helps support the channel and allows me to continue to make videos like this. Thank you for the support! :)
This method is way safer (non toxic versus carcinogenic) but more difficult to use. Currently I would not recommend sealants such as MSC to anyone anymore because of health concerns. I simply do not find it worth the risk.
No liquitex doesn’t have any toxic fumes
- Yes you still want to wear a mask and take all the usual precautions as you normally would. It is still a chemical so you want to avoid breathing it in or getting it into your eyes.
- Some people have been using a brush only to apply the sealant. I would recommend checking DoA in the customisation part of the forum and read about their experience.
You will need a half-face respirator that protects against organic vapours and has a N95 filter. I highly recommend checking the DoA thread called "What you need to know about respiratory protection" for more detailed info regarding brands and types of respirators.
Liquitex actually does sell this as a spray. It's called Liquitex Professional Spray Varnish. It comes in both gloss and matte, so be careful which one you get.
thank you so much for telling us about this. I was worried about having to get an air brush because I rarely use them because I have terrible aim xD
Wow.... and i went and bought an airbrush solely for this purpose!! :D I'm in pain!! :D
GFDI OTL me too! I literally just bought an airbrush machine yesterday for this soul purpose T^T
*pats your back* I thought i was the only one lol!! At least you'll have the airbrush if your local art store doesn't have the spray like mine...
I just bought the spray, and I could find no information about doll customizing using it... I hope it works...
In terms of it being waterproof, I tried rubbing it with water and it was just fine. I couldnt notice any difference between MSC and Liquitex.
Yeah I know what you mean, this is why at the very end I airbrushed the whole faceup with the non diluted varnish to make sure everything is sealed properly :)
So can I use liquitex instead of MSC?
@@kumariniharika2224 Yes! It is much better since it isn't toxic, you could eat a small amount and all that can happen is that your stomach can hurt a bit,at least that is what they say on their website.
This video is so helpful! Aside from health concerns, I've heard MSC also does not work well in humid weather. Where I live it's always humid so there's just no use. I do own brush-on sealants, but I never thought to use them with an airbrush. I've found that brushing on liquid sealant (even when not cut with water) will make the watercolor pencils run, and the style I like is extremely hard to achieve with an entirely paint faceup. Thank you so much for this!
The dedication I can see from your channel is totally outstanding!
Lol all I see is pro people that make beautiful dolls while I'm just a beginner!😬
oo she's been doing this for years, practice and you'll get better C:
Cap'n Valentine If you see the first ones, she's already REALLY good at it. She's a professional ilustrator so she had past experience and doing face-ups its like drawing but on a doll face. If you have 0 experience in drawing or things like this, it would take you MUCH longer than to someone who had experience.
Ashura Sarin all my friends say I'm like a professional at drawing which I kinda am not trying to brag...
But I'm really good at dolls now and I'm selling them so it's interesting!😀
FLUFFY PANDAS That's wonderful to hear :) Congrats
It is fortunate and blissful to start a project and strive to learn more! You being eager to learn is a great start for any project!
From what people wrote after trying spray bottles and the special ones used for spraying oil, it splatters the sealant too much. The mist has to be light and fine, if the head gets obvious sealant droplets it is not good. But then again it could be an issue of the type of spray bottles those people used. It would be great if people didnt need to buy an airbrush+compressor so I hope they will keep trying different options to make this work :)
lovely work as always.
I'd really like to see the durability of a face-up done using this method of sealing tested over a period of months before calling this a good new option as sealant, especially since you had to dilute the matte medium for it to work through the airbrush so I'd wonder if that changed the durability at all.
That is a good idea! :O it would be interesting seeing if it worked with one of those small plastic spray bottles. If you end up trying it out, let me know how it goes :D
one question, is those sealants you're using strong? i mean if you put your doll in water it wont wash away?
It shouldn't wash away,on the website it says it's waterproof
I use a regular airbrush cleaner that you can get from most art stores :)
This popped up on my tumblr dashboard and I just have to say it was wonderful watching you work. The faceup looks amazing. I wish I had the resources to learn to paint as wonderfully as you do. Thank you for sharing and if I ever get to learn, I will definitely come back to this video as a reference point :)
Creative way of using brush on sealents and airbrushes! But I kinda thought u were actually going to use a brush and apply the sealent on the face by hand, would there be any effects in doing it that way since I don't have an airbrush? I want to start doing faceups soon, and I thought maybe brush-on sealents would be ok.
I thought so too. The title is "BRUSH ON sealants" and here you whip out an airbrush and its like ._ .
+Maverynthia I think she meant more like the sealant is for the brushes but she's trying it with her airbrush. that or because an airbrush does have the word brush in it. so technically it is a brush on sealant. 😅
i don't think you can actually brush on any sealant without smudging the colors though xept for gloss since its a thick layer lol. maybe the first layer but you might get brushtexture and hair stuck in it and it would be uneven so i don't think it'd be a good idea.
Vic's Point of View Yeah but in the end she had to use only paint because the pencils didn't want to work.
From what I have seen, you need to be very careful if applying sealants with a paintbrush because they can ruin the faceup underneath.
does anyone know if you can put the mixture into a spray bottle to spray it on the doll instead of an airbrush
That sounds a great idea... I'm out to get some of the liquitex sealant tomorrow ( if I can find it ) and I'll see if I can give it a go. Will come back with the results!
Okay, I purchased a Derwent Spritzer bottle and used the same Liquitex fluid and water mixture.
The method does work, it just takes care and experimentation. I found that the droplets from the spritzer were 'heavier' than those from an airbrush, so I sprayed from a good distance, with only one or two pumps. I did then very very gently use a tiny brush to brush over the droplets, otherwise they just sat on the plastic as little drops. As long as you're careful you shouldn't have an issue :)
Wolf Rhapsodos did it work well? i used the same today the colors didnt stick at all,it looked like a mess
Steven rawr Aww, really sorry to hear that :( it worked fine for me. Maybe try again but experiment with leaving each layer of sealer longer to dry, or doing more layers or something. I'm sorry I can't help you out more!
+Wolf Rhapsodos
Did you have to wear any lung protection like respirators or masks? I just wanted to make sure since I don't want to breath in chemicals in the sealant. Thanks! :)
Could you go over airbrushes (where to buy/techniques)?
Yeah that would be awesome!
iwata 👍
+ theres a lot of cheap nail art airbrush on ebay that worls really well try search it on ebay or amazon :)
kinda depends on what you want to do with it. "iwata" is great but quite expensive. if you want to make very thin lines and sections like for tattoos and scars you might want to consider harder & steenbeck's "infinity". just make sure its a "double action" airbrush.
Elena A. I know that Hobby Lobby sells them
Airbrushes are expensive, but if someone is going to be doing a lot of faceups it's not a bad investment for your health! Thanks so much for sharing this, MSC is the one downfall for me with faceups. I mean yes, pastel dust isn't good for you either but the MSC is so toxic, makes me want to do less of them.
Nicolle, It was nice to hear your voice in your newer video's. I have been following your face up videos for a time now. I refurbish and repaint vintage Barbie dolls. I was able to pick up on the materials that you use and bought things accordingly...thank you for that! :-) But...I have dabbled in BJD's as I love to paint and to draw and work on doll's faces. Nicolle, do you have a Facebook page? Also..I was wondering what type of airbrush (and mask, for that matter) do you use (the model, the brand and the price.) If I do purchase one I would rather get a good one that I can use for a time, kwim? I wonder if there is a format for us to share some pics...I would love to share with you some pics of Barbie dolls that I have refurbished. I sew clothes and restyle/redo their hair as needed. You are a JOY to watch (work!!!) Thank you so much. P.S. I am like a 'Grandma' at 57 years of age but I still 'play' with dolls! ;-D It's nice to meet others that do, too. :-) Blessings to you Nicolle! :-)
This video made my day. I have been looking for some non-toxic sealers. I will have to try it out. Thanks!
You remove it just like normal faceups. There is a video in my channel showing how I do that. And no, you can't. It will smudge the pastels and paints plus the brush strokes will stay visible when dry and the coating will be way too thick which will very likely cause some clouding.
Can I have a step by step on what you used when and how, please? I got confused half way through it! 🤣
You need the compressor to supply the air to the airbrush. The airbrush alone cannot do anything on its own. It is like buying a digital camera without the battery.
wow thats amazing! What a beautiful face. Would love to see her completely finished with body etc. Thanks for sharing. Hugs Ali
Those are all commissions from my clients. I am a faceup artists so all the dolls you see in my videos have been sent to me for customisation purposes by the original owner.
Wow.... You're amazing! Thank you so much for giving all this info, I'm just starting out with my face ups and your videos have been such a great help!
I'm not sure where we got ours to be honest, and I live in the US. If it isnt too expensive for you you may be able to order one online. I've looked on amazon with the search terms 'olive oil pump sprayer' and it turned up quite a few results! Most of them seem to be no cheaper than 9.95 USD
Yes, I use water and airbrush cleaner after every use :)
Thank you for watching :)
It says in the lower third :) "Here I am diluting Liquitex Matte Medium with distilled water"
I'm so glad that this is working out for you! And hoping that you're doing better as well :)
They have these bottles for Olive Oil that you can buy that turns it into a spray similar to the aerisol looking cans of cooking spray, I wonder if it would be suitable for DaniDollfie's suggestion? Basically you pump the can before spraying.. They come without olive oil so you wouildnt have to worry about cleaning it out.
I always get excited when you upload a new video! Beautiful work as always! What model of doll is this? I absolutely love it!
Interesting choice. I don't have the money or time to get the famous sealants everyone uses, so I went into my local art store and found a matte sealant in spray. At first while using it I realize it left white sand-like particles all over the place, so I stopped using it.
I tried to use it again recently, and realized that not only those white thingies disappear in a few hours, but the sealant is eco-friendly, which means is not that toxic.
Still, if anytime I have the money and time, I would love to try this technique.
Can you please tell what spray it is?
Enon Z Matedart.
Did you use an airbrush or spray directly onto the head?
*****
No, the sealant on its own.
Your work always puts a smile on my face. ^__^
Thank you so much for finding safer alternatives to Mr. Super Clear! I've been sad because I've been wanting to do faceups, but even with a mask I seem to end up coughing after Mr. Super Clear. It just doesn't' feel safe to me. :(
I never realized just how dangerous other popular sealants are. If that thing with the spray bottle/olive oil bottle works, you bet I'll be using this method of yours. Thank you so much for the information C:
I have a question, I tried this method today but the heads gets a bit shiny, they are not matte like when I use MSC, can it be that I put too much distilled water on the mix? In the video you seem to be airburhushing the head a lot, so I don't think I'm over doing it... >.
You were most likely applying way too much sealant in one go. You are supposed to spray just a light mist.
Yes, better be safe than sorry :)
Thanks
yes please let us know, airbrush+compressor is currently too expensive for me to get
I tried this sealant on a monster high doll and a barbie. But even after a few days the skin feels a bit "sticky" and when I wanted to paint with a watercolor pencil it didn't work well.
Any idea what went wrong? (Sorry, my English is not perfect, I'm from Germany)
There could be many reasons, you might have applied it too thick, or maybe the temperature was too low or the humidity levels too high.
Thank you for the fast answer :-)
So you don´t think it could be because the dolls head is vinyl and not resin?
Tried it on resin and it worked fine :-) Well, but it was an other temperature and humidity that day. ;-)
Nicolle's Dreams how many days Take to finish one doll? I didn't found this answer On FAQ
Did you dilute it? It could be too thick.
Maysi - Art I agree with sage-acris about the varnish needing to be diluted. I had the same problem and it was not diluted enough and I put on too thick. The weather was also very humid.
I was wondering if the matte varnish is also watered down, I know the medium is, but what about the varnish?
She said in the last part of the video that one of the pros of the varnish was that it didn't need to be watered down.
Ah, thank you! :D Must have missed that part oTL
What do you use to make the airbrush reddish on the dolls eyes?
Hi,would you like to tell me the brand of distilled water which you used to mix with Liquitex Matte Medium. Thanks very much!!
I know you can't answer every question you get but hopefully you see this one. What kind of airbrush do you use? I've never used one before and I can't seem to get a good read on what's best for repainting, or in this case applying sealant. Is it gravity feed, dual action, internal mix or siphon feed?
She made a questions video about that. Link is in her description 😊
This seems like it would be so expensive to buy or start as a hobby. I love the artistry of this! I would love one and I would enjoy making one but that a lot of money either way.
I've never used it so I can't help :
At least I have Liquitex Matte Medium at my local craft store!
i will use this , here in Mexico ( in the little town where i live) it's almost imposible to get a spray sealant and liquitex matte fluid its a great alternative if you have an air brush ( which i happen to have ... i don't have a compresor but i have cans which they sell at walmart and can be attach to be able to use the air brush) also its a great invertion you use so little and the smallest bottle of liquitex ( here in my country ) is of 16 oz so it will last a loooong way , so yeah i will follow your steps Andreja and i will buy a bottle of liquitex matte / ultra matte medium fluid :)
how long does your bottle last? I'm considering investing in this because I can't afford a new can of MSC every 2/3 face-ups and this seems to last much longer..
+Marjolein i still haven't bought it but you i think you can save alooot since you use only a little to seal
I'm not good at English. I use a translator. These days I have been practicing makeup while watching your video. airbrush is difficult to use ...error. The acrylic particles are spread in dot shape. Perhaps it is thought to be associated with the diluent. I use acrylic LIQUITEX and gouache with distilled water. You do diluents with distilled water? Very curious^^. Thank you
GORGEOUS.
Fabulous as ever! Interesting experiment too. I wonder if t here's a silk medium (as opposed to matt or gloss). It might make a smoother surface with maybe just one of matt for the tooth. What are your thoughts on UV protection?
Hi again Andreja! I started to use liquitex for my customizations, but it's sold out in my country, I want to try the Golden Acrylic Matte Medium, do you think it will work fine too?
Oh, if I could own one of those dolls.
i used the brush on sealant, and did what you said, only think i don't have an air brush so after I got my face up on ..and had to reseal, it kinda smudge *facepalm*.. any tips on getting the sealant on, when you don't have an airbrush?
I do not have any way to test the UV protection that the Liquitex sealant offers without spending a nice chunk of money on resin parts and sacrifice them to the sun. On a side note I used the MSC that has UVcut and the one that doesnt, on two of my dolls and I have not noticed any difference between the two after a full year. So who knows...
I do not use pastels with the airbrush. I do however have separate airbrushes for the sealant and gouache :)
even though I find dolls terrifying I can't stop watching your videos and now really want to try to customize a doll! So thanks :)
I am afraid that using a brush would smear the paint (especially pastels and shimmer). I tried applying the liquid with a brush on the headcap of one of my dolls and you could see the brush strokes which wasnt very nice.
I wonder if you would get a good tooth versus to much or not enough by mixing the two to seal between layers
It is written in the lower third at the exact same time > "Here I am mixing Liquitex Matte Medium with distilled water"
Do you have any videos of you doing a close up on how to do the eyebrows
is the glue turning transparent after some time ? or it stays white ....
This makes sense to use it in an airbrush once watered down! I was confused how brush on works because if you brush it on that would just remove soft powders
Hi Andreja, can you explain why we need the compressor as well and not just the airbrush?
I used this method with my airbrush and I must say I am hooked! at first it was getting a little drippy, but after playing with my airbrush settings a little bit, I got it down perfect, thanks for showing us this, it is truly so much better, even with a respirator, I swear, I could feel MSC in my lungs! this way is so much nicer!
When putting the coating on, what consists a good even coat? Should the head be damp or lightly moist?
I tried it on a tan Lati Lea (see my latest video). I will be getting more tan dolls this month and will keep testing it out but so far it works wonderfully.
I don't know if the question has been posed or not, but... Which would you suggest for someone new to faceups? I don't have an airbrush, but someone suggested the spray bottle, which I'd be willing to try. But is it safer/easier to just use the stuff in the spray for someone who is still learning this sort of thing?
I like this video cause I want to start repainting dolls but I want to have a non toxic alternative while removing and start draw😊
This is amazing, I don't like the MSC type sprays as they are so dangerous. But I never knew there was a safe option like this! I was wondering I saw some people mention the aerosol type bottles you can use as I can't afford a fancy airbrush like yours just yet. Any idea what they look like/where you can find them?
Thank you for this! I will be trying this VERY soon!
Hi Andreja!
I own an airbrush system and wanted to start painting MHs too! So I bought the Matte Medium though
my problem now is: the tooth is really bad D: Like...REALLY bad.
I had some Polychromos flying around and used them, but the colors don't show up well at all ._. I also tried to apply the Matte Medium undiluted with a brush but the result wasn't very good either :c
Any tips?
I'd be so glad if you could help me T-T
Much love ♥
+Lilith Blackmoon she said in some newer videos if the colors dont show up you probably havent sealed it enough maybe applying it a few more times will help?
+Liam Amazarashi more often than not it is the opposite, she most likely used too much sealant which made it not set properly hence the pencils are not showing. The layering that I keep mentioning is in regards to making the colours stronger and more vibrant :)
ahh sorry then >_
Liam Amazarashi No worries, I know that things can be confusing :)
I meant the dolls that she gives face-ups to. I'm aware she doesn't make the dolls themselves.
Joelle, I asked this question the other day and she said to use the watercolor pencils dry.
A very basic question: once sealed, can I put the doll head in hot water to make it softer when I joint it to the body? Or can I use a hairdryer?
This varnish is not waterproof nor flexible, it will turn white and flake off if in contact with moisture for a prolonged time and it will crack under if the base deforms.
That sounds likea great idea, do you have any idea where they sell those?..I kinda live in Spain, so it's hard to get stuff, but who knows, maybe at my local grocery store (?) Thanks :DD
I think this cann work with ... paint brushes? Idk I will try see if I can go far with it, if not then airbrush xD I can acc use airbrush for other arts too 🤔
"brush-on sealants" in title. video is about using an airbrush orz
I may try this instead. I just got a Luts Senior Delf Niya in recently and I would like to get her blushed but I need a sealant. I don't want anything too toxic (if at all) because I'm sensitive to such things and it would be difficult for me to wear a mask or respirator. Already is with COVID.
Now, if you can do this with the body as well, link me the parts and clothes that can be made, that'd be epic. :3
I don't know if I asked this question before and hope it gets answer but when if you repaint a doll do you sell it after or wait til it dries and seal?
Hope u can see this but I want to ask does liquitex varnish removable by using Thinners or any acrylic paint removal?coz I saw the description on the product says it’s non removable n permanent
Hi there! I was wondering (as I've been using my own airbrush for face ups recently) with the liquitex mattte medium sealant...what do you use to clean your airbrush with afterwards. Since the substance is considered permenate in their line (I have the same airbrush as you) and I quick clean between colors with water (when using gouache) what would you use to clean the varnish from the airbrush. Thank hon!
What is the sealant to water ratio that you use?
What's the ratio of liquitex matte varnish and distilled water? Or is the varnish ready to use with the airbrush? I saw you explained how to mix the matte medium to use as a primer an create the tooth to paint on, but I need to know the varnish part as well since there's nowhere to buy MSC or the other spray alternatives in my country and Amazon doesn't ship them here either
Hello I was just wondering if you use anything to thin out the Liquitex Matte Varnish? Or is it ready to use with an airbrush just out of the bottle? Do you just dillute it with water like the Matte Medium? Also- do you need it to be distilled water? Can I just use tap water?
Thank you!
well she does dilute it with distilled water, so it isn't ready to use as it is. It's too thick otherwise I'm guessing and would clog the airbrush or the airbrush would apply it unevenly.
Distilled water is the better choice as it is almost pure water. No chemicals, no minerals and stuff that mighr affect the end result.
I don't think it would cause huge problems, but it might have some effect.

she diluted the liquitex medium to use as a primer, but she doesn't explain how to use the matte varnish even though is on the video's front picture. when she finish painting the doll, the video ends there. no varnish part is explained. please I really need to know the answer to this question as well since there's nowhere to buy MSC or the other spray alternatives in my country and Amazon doesn't ship them here either :(
I have done some research and the Liquitex Matte Varnish is water-based, apparently, so you should be able to dilute it with distilled water too. Thank you!
Ellie X actually at 12:40 she did mentioned the Matte Varnish, and she also said it doesn't need to be diluted, even on the bottle of Matte Varnish you can also see it has "Do not thin with water" as well ... but Andreja used it for the very last layer so I'm also wondering if there're any differences if she used only Matte Varnish from the start
what kind of mask would we use while doing face ups?
Help!! I tried this method and it was terrible. The watercolor pencils would not adhere unless I made them wet first. What am I doing wrong? :-(
You say it is rough and I know you gave examples, but I am not sure off the top of my head the difference in the feel of those papers. So would you say it is so rough it feels bad or just more rough compared to other sealants?
Once upon a time, I was testing the liquitex sealant on the head cap of my floating head, and it came out perfect. However, when I did the face up, I made the layers too thick, so it looks very shiny and textured. I'm determined to get it right! I can't afford an airbrush, so I can only use normal paint brushes and makeup sponges. I also need the varnish to create a hard top coat...
what is shimmer?.. i want to know product name. thank u..
cho young bae In another tutorial I saw "Pearl-Ex" pigment recommended. It said it was a silvery glitter powder. Also said to put a LOT on because much of it disappears after the sealant is applied. :-)
How and where can I buy this doll? My daughter Angelica wants one. Please help me :)
What if..not owning an airbrush, you were to put the sealant into a small aerosol can or some sort of spray can you can use instead of an airbrush for sealing? Another stupid question x)
What diluent is acrylic? But using distilled water, acrylic particles spread. It spreads in dot shape. I would like to know the diluent. Thank you.
+bebell bjd bebell doll For acrylics you use either the water OR alcohol. Try a bit, maybe the purest alcohol you can find or some sort of mix won't create that effect on your works.
This video was very helpful! Thank you so much
+Dolls with Beats I am not sure, I've only ever done it with distilled water
Hi, may I know the name of this Doll?
She looks good after Andreja's Faceup.
Thank you in advance.
Can you do this sort of thing without an airbrush?
Hey andrea! Can you recommend me some distilled water brands?
Thank you very much!
