A derecho is a classification of powerful long-lived windstorms.
Typical derechos can blow down large trees and wreak havoc on power lines. Tornadoes often like to hang out with derechos and so derechos are often accompanied by tornado warnings.
But what’s the difference?
The damaging winds in derechos typically occur in one general direction along a relatively straight swath, whereas tornado winds as we all know are circulating. In fact, the word "tornado" originates from the Spanish words “tronada," meaning thunderstorm and "tornar," to twist or turn. To distinguish lower end tornado damage from long-lived straight line wind-storm damage, we again use Spanish... “derecho” which can mean straight.
DERECHO QUALIFICATIONS
For a windstorm to qualify as a derecho It must include wind gusts of at least 58 mph or greater along most of its length. (50 knots or 93 km/h)
It must have a path of continuous or intermittent wind damage
that extends at least 400 miles (650 km)
and is at least 60 miles wide. (100 km)
DERECHO TECHNICAL DEFINITION
NOAA/NWS defines a derecho as a continuous or intermittent path of wind damage from a squall line of thunderstorms, bow echo, or quasi-linear convective system (QLCS) that extends at least 400 miles and is at least 60 miles wide. In other words: It’s a swath of wind damage from mostly non-tornadic thunderstorms that extends for 400+ miles and is at least 60 miles wide.
When people are hit by a derecho, many believe it was a tornado.
If you correct them, they’re usually disappointed or disagree.
This is because being in a derecho often makes for an un-macho dinner party story. But derechos can be dead serious.
THE DEADLY DERECHO / HOUSTON TX May 16, 2024
At least eight lives were lost in the event that spanned from Texas to Florida. With hurricane force wind gusts reported up to 100 mph, countless trees and power lines were brought down causing massive power outages.A couple transmission towers collapsed from estimated 115 mph winds near the top of the towers. Damage occurred to numerous structures and thousands of windows were blasted out in downtown Houston alone. All of this inflicted over a billion dollars in damage.
No one can make us fall in love with these storms other than Pecos Hank

Love back atcha Abdul.
@@PecosHank thank you so much, you pinned my comment ❤☺
This is so wholesome 🙂
@@PecosHank hey, I know your probably not going to see this but you’re the main reason I want to go into meteorology. I want to give all thanks to you

NO YOU!
Stay safe, Hank. The storms know where you live now, and they followed you home!

TV? We don’t need no stink’n TV. Just Pecos Hank 😎 🌪️
When my father moved to the US, we changed our father/daughter bucketlist trip from Safari trip to Twister chaser... now he's too ill to do it- we get the best of both with watching Hank. Saving animals, chasing storms- it's the Pecos way. 😅
Drop everything Hank posted boys
I swear!!! 😂
I DROPPED CHASEO

i agree thats what i did

This video had everything. Cinematography, drama, laughs, destruction, sadness and happiness. Masterpiece. Bravo.
And a Spanish language lesson.
And music by Hank
Being in a porta potty in one of these things gotta be a wild ride 😂
i imagine it might feel like the slingshot port-a-potty on jack*ss
Probably a shitty ride
I worked for a carnival for a few years, and we were hit by several derechoes over the years. One guy was in a porta-potty when one hit and he came out just before it blew over and was blown about a block away. He said that he didn't know what was happening, but it felt like a bull ride.
poop. everywhere.
Sh1t happens...
Pecos Hank: An informative video about Derechos. RUclips subtitles: Yes, a Derecho is a type of burrito. A very dangerous burrito.
That made me chuckle I turned on subs and was like ....burrittioo....
The cutaway to the rays was class
that was so out of pocket lmao
That sent me 😂
Hilarious 😂😂😂 no voiceover or anything
Can we just look at how Hank is not only comforting his wife, but also informing her on exactly what’s happening? And how she’s calling out hazards!? We love it!
How sweet your wife is. If I had the choice to be with anyone in any storm it would be with you for sure !! Thanks Hank for the quick lesson. Best wishes and happy trails 😊
Agreed, lol, I think you'd be in good hands
Just came to comment this exact thing, like, out of ANYONE to be stuck in a bad storm with and you picked one of the greatest tornado survivors of all time? 🤣👏
Would be amazing to survive a big storm with someone beside me totally agreed ❤

Love the communication between you and your wife! “Power line”
“On it”
That’s the good stuff
Pecos hanks videos are like no other storm chasing videos I’ve seen before, the amount of information in his vids are brilliant, keep it up Hank!
He's very engaging and entertaining, too. Some people just got it.
And a soothing voice 😌
First time huh?
And they’re soothing for some reason ? 😂
I think it’s Hanks voice, a steady camera , interesting info and a bit of witty humor . Also the animal cameos are a bonus :)
I was thinking the entire time... you two are under some serious stress driving around in that storm. And, the two of you are speaking to and being so nice to one another! A great example for us all :)
Man, that bird was struggling 2:20
That bird was a champ!
That bird was not prepared
Here in Illinois we get some really strong winds, and it's kinda funny when a bird is trying to fight it. Looks like a glitch in the matrix when you see a bird flapping it's wings as hard as it can, but not moving at all lol
Bird scared out of its mind.
Foul treadmill
Honestly this is something I needed, I have terrible anxiety of storms that hit out of nowhere. I watch these all the time because it helps me understand storms better. Thank you Pecos Hank
You are so right. Hank's weather knowledge and the accessibility of radar have helped me tremendously.
@leahmollytheblindcatnordee3586 it's an absolute blessing when a storm comes by and I know it's just a storm.
@@DrPebis Yes! When I was a child and they put out any sort of watch, I would grab my favorite toy and sit on the basement steps. That was long ago. Not fun.
@leahmollytheblindcatnordee3586 yeah I lived in Minnesota for a while and I remember crying in the basement from a basic thunderstorm because I didn't know the difference
@@DrPebis Good to know we are not alone.
Aww you got your wife to storm chase!! Too cute❤
Damn, my heart breaks for the people who lost their lives. I am also sad for all those really old trees that got snapped and uprooted. That old growth surely added to the charm and austerity of that beautiful community.
Edit: damn autocorrect
You can replace most things, but not the old trees. At least not in your lifetime. IMHO other than human life that loss is the saddest in storms.
And Houston needs all the charm it can get
It is still a very nice neighborhood! Just with a little less shade.
You know its a good day when pecos hank uploads
From a fellow storm chaser/ musician from Houston, much love brother and keep inspiring us to be better chasers/ photographers! You are the best! ❤ 🤘
Everytime a new Hank Video drops i go for it ! I was worried about you when I saw Houston got hit . Glad you came out fine. Your Wife was Brave ,not being a Stormchaser, but your calm energy brings everybody down with Storm anxiety. And I saw Vietnamese Coffee at the End !
Thanks Christine. Vietnamese coffee pho-sho :D
@@PecosHank Guess who is waiting for his Coffee back home ;D
@@PecosHank And, you can be punny in more than one language!
That impromptu anti-chase had to be quite the adventure for your wife. But it was cool to see your calm problem solving approach and her being your co-pilot.
This leaves me wanting more, in a good way, with your masterful storytelling, filming, editing, and even animation, as well as that tempting Vietnamese dinner and coffee at the end.
So glad y'all made it through safely! 💜🌎🍀
A derecho swept through western Wisconsin on July 15, 1980. Many days without power, countless trees down, a couple fatalities. Tree down on top of my grandma's car. I was too young to remember it, but I grew up always hearing about "The July 15th Storm." Derechos are nothing to mess with!
Love it Hank!! Nat is terrified and asks about tornadoes and you calmly say yes probably a few burritos! She definitely didn't want the truth! I love you both and I'm glad all of you are ok despite damage. My niece lives in Houston. I texted her 2 days later. Her area got hit, but not as bad as the neighborhood over from her. ❤🌪️
The CC put derecho warnings as burrito warnings lmao love it!
Reminds me of a news station that used tacos as a metaphor that explained differences between storm watches, warnings and emergencies.
Could use a burrito emergency right now.
A derecho hit us back on May 21 2022 here in Ottawa, Canada. The storm stretched 630 miles with sustained wind speeds of 89mph with 4 tornadoes produced and 12 fatalities.
With love from Kazakhstan😊
Howdy from Texas
I was driving an unloaded box truck back up from Houston to Dallas when that hit, north of Conroe. Had to go home and change my pants.
I'm glad you're ok! Luckily we have washers to take care of the pants.
Were you still in Dallas when the next one hit there? If so you probably felt like God had your number!
I love how calm Hank is
Stay safe Hank! You’re the best chaser on RUclips.
Thankyou for the explanation of the storm. Glad your property wasn't damaged and that you and your wife were safe, hope your friends were okay too
That storm was terrifying
Bless your wife for tagging along, even though it's scary! She's a trooper, and I adore that she's interested in your work.
Also, it's refreshing to see you investigating weather closer to home!
Jeez, the storms in Australia got nuthin' on these monsters

I love how her thoughtfulness leaks through, even as she wants him to have a good time. She's all like "power line 😬" mind your surroundings! Very wholesome and supportive! (Also I heavily relate to you ma'am; you are the voice of sense to my storm-loving psyche, made human lol)
Another great video!! Thanks Mr. Pecos
Great video Hank as always. You are the best. Cheers from Poland 🇵🇱🌪️
Ah I remember my first Derecho. I and some other neighbors stepped outside in it. That was a fun moment of coming together as a community.
That Hank's reaction to getting hit by a Derecho is to make an informative RUclips video about them says everything. Hope the cleanup has gone/is going okay
we got pecos hank animations before GTA6
I was in a derrecho ☝️🤓
Watching your videos helped me stay calm and direct my wife when an EF2 tornado touched down near us on a long drive back home.
Pho makes everything better.
I love how Hanks all calm maneuvering through the storm, I guess it's just comes naturally after all these year!
Glad you guys are okay 💕
I love your videos dude, I watch your tornado videos all the time!
I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and a Derecho rekt us a couple years back and we suffered, in my area, an extensive power outage and I took some footage of when it rolled in and then some footage of damage that it had left behind. I thought it was a tornado. I was trying to install a window air conditioner at the time when it rolled in without warning and wow fighting to get that window shut was unreal and my partner and the kids at the time were terrified. It was nothing to joke about. Crazy stuff. Love your videos!
Oh dang! I watched your other derecho video! Stay safe out there!
I’ve never clicked on a video so fast
Lovely to see your wife hank! And you being so calm helped her so much imho. Very nice to see!

BABE! Pecos Hank just put out a new video get the popcorn ready
Never expected you to bring your wife on a chase with you! Your wholesome dynamic only made this vid even better. Hope your neighbors are doing alright after that storm. And thanks for the easy explanation of a derecho: knew it was basically just a bunch of strong wind and rain, but never went into the specifics before.
Y’all Hank posted. Great to see a another video.
Pecos Hank sometimes puts his life in danger just to entertain and inform us. Mad respect.
Wow that sky looked ANGRY! The colour!!
Hank you are my hero
Lmao! At 1:39 closed caption says "To distinguish *lower-end burrito damage* from straight line wind damage we again use Spanish..." instead of *lower-end tornado damage*
That comedic cut to the manta rays was gold, especially with the big open mouth coming right at the camera at the end. "Really?!" - screams under water* 😂Love you guys!
The music guy storm chases too? Thats so cool
Or does the storm chasing guy also do music?
But yeah- Hank's a modern Coen Brothers movie all to himself. A guitar playing, horned toad communing, folk wisdom dispensing, tornado wrangling, poet warrior of the modern American prairie.
Love how you give your audience such great info on these storms. Your videos are truly one of a kind. Never stop bringing the heat, Hank!
Gotta love Hank's videos and commentating, always something good.
As always, Hank, thank you for this.

When Pecos Hank posts its a good day.
Bahaha love this, thanks as always Hank.
I got caught in a derecho in Minneapolis about a decade ago. It was WILD. We were waiting at a light when I heard things hit my car. Tree limbs! Trees were coming down everywhere. I went a few blocks until I could get in the wind shadow of a commercial building, while we watched trees fall all over ahead of us. We had to pick our way home through a few miles of impassible streets and smashed cars. Power was out for five days at our house.
love you so much hank!! God bless you 💕
Your my favorite storm chaser since I started watching storm vids, you just can’t beat Hank!
Good thing you were there to protect your lady Hank. If there was anyone capable if doing so it was you brother!
Good to know you covered this in Houston & that y’all stayed safe from the danger .
RUclips was made for pecos hank. Just the best.
Great explainer. You have a talent for entertaining and informing without sensationalizing.
I'm glad you're both ok! This is one of those rare instances where the storm chases the chaser home. Thank you for the explanation and your lovely sense of humor. I've experience hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes... and in the midwest, derechos... they are as scary as any of the above. My family and friends in Houston were all rattled with the May derecho, and there was an absolutely devastating storm in the midwest (really affected Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois... a few years ago).

We experienced a microburst/derecho in my city recently, and the hail was so hard it blew up a transformer down the street from me, and was also a straight-line wind event.

@PecoHank Thanks for this one! Great souvenir…we were supposed to go out for tacos for my sons’ 18th birthday, but we hid in the closet instead. The dog was trembling. I’ve watched dozens of your videos over the years. Funny, informative, classy and awe inspiring. Muchas gracias
Watching Pecos Hank is like a trip down memory lane for me. I have been watching you since I was 4 haha!! Much love and happy trails from Reading, Pennsylvania 👍
That is some power unleashed right there. I love Derecho's. Peace to you Pecos Hank!!!
Good to see you fared decent from that destructive event.
On June 10th, a smaller scale downburst hit portions of Summerville, Ladson and Goose Creek. SC with 80 to 85mph (some localized spots looked more intense). 3.5 miles wide and 8.5 miles long damage swath accompanied with 2" hail, just missed my locale by less than a mile. When people ask what a derecho is, I tell them imagine that Summerville storm then tell them it's basically has effects like that as large as South Carolina.
Whoopee, so good to see both of you. Straight line winds took down an older barn not far from us one year and last week 70+ mph winds took out power, but luckily for us only for 10 hours, although it was in the 90's and the humidity was high (Mid-Michigan). We were coming home in the storm and thankfully were on a road with few trees. Its been quite a year for storms. I think our local power company is investing large amounts of money to put power lines underground. Not sure how good that will be, but we shall see.
