  • The Lenovo Y740 is a popular gaming laptop, but why is that the case? Let’s find out everything about it in this detailed review to help you decide if it’s a laptop you should consider buying. I'm testing the 17 inch version here, which has a few differences over the 15 inch model.

    While working on this review but after I finished testing, Lenovo released a new BIOS update that notes it improves fan cooling function: support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds506181 from the few people I've spoken with who own the Y740 so far it doesn't seem like this makes too much difference, and still doesn't add manual fan control.

      I’ll stick with the old bios. Especially since I get 82 FPS average on Division 2 after OC on the gpu and CPU undervolt. Don’t want to ruin that.

      I own the 740 15 inch. Even though you can not max fans anymore, the new bios has improved the fan curves and led to better overall temps when gaming and performing high demand tasks. This is on 1.10 bios though. 1.09 was however hot garbage. I believe you would get vastly different results on 1.10, which I can prove with my own benchmarks

The Y740 looks like it has the potential to be that replacement! Hey Jarrod loved your video . I was thinking about getting the 15" rtx2060 Variant , so as of now I'm worried about the portability of the device since it also has a giant power brick. So should really worry about that Or is the net weight gonna be fine? And also is the display good enough with colours!

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 года назад

      Thanks, yeah the brick is pretty annoying. I recently went on a trip with the Y540 and it has the exact same brick, felt like it took up too much bad space, so I guess depends on if space is a limitation when you need to take it places. The display is decent but it's available with different options, so could vary based on what you select.

    So hard to decide which gaming laptop to buy because there are so many gaming laptops out there but my mate here helped me alot to choose. Very detailed reviews and he answers questions. Now im thinking of buying the Y740 with 17" 144hz Gsync, 16gb ram, 2070 MaxQ but the only thing stopping me now is what I read on Lenovo forums. They removed the max fan feature from latest bios update hence thermal issues. Not having the max fan feature shouldnt be an issue and go for it? Or go for something else like ROG Scar III?

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 года назад

      The lack of user controllable max fan speed is a bit of a let down, scar III has lower CPU power limit so will perform worse in CPU bound tasks, but the GPU isn't max-q, so if you're using it for games at max settings that will actually utilise the graphics well then it could be better.

  • @timo_tamm
    @timo_tamm 4 года назад

    I genuinely love the fact that you mention if the laptop has optimus or not, and if it is switchable.
    Some things like shadowplay/OBS aren't perfectly compatible with optimus. For example, I can't record my desktop or anything that isn't being explicitly rendered with the nvidia gpu with either if I want to leverage NVENC as the encoder. I've even had issues using the other standard encoders.
    That and insanely high framerate (1000+fps) games (osu!) have compatibility issues with optimus.
    For these reasons, plus the fact that a desktop isn't portable, I am looking for a non-optimus/switchable laptop and these reviews are a godsend.
    Thanks for going in-depth with the laptops.
    I'll also throw in a suggestion, check what video card the video ports (DP, HDMI) are connected to. This is important if you want to use an Oculus Rift S headset or avoid optimus, the Rift S won't work with ports that are connected via optimus/intel GPU. One way to check check this is to go to the NVIDIA control panel and look at the "Set PhysX Configuration" menu, it has a visual overview of the connections.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 года назад +1

      Cheers! Yes I have wanted to add testing what the ports are connected to, I have just forgotten to add it in with the last few videos, and I guess I always assume they must be connected to the Nvidia GPU because to me at least it seems silly to connect them to the Intel GPU, though it does of course happen.

    • @timo_tamm
      @timo_tamm 4 года назад

      @@JarrodsTech It absolutely is silly. However during the launch of the Rift S there were a lot of disappointed laptop users who had to return their VR unit due to this, at least in the Oculus subreddit.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 года назад

      Personally even a 2070 max-q is overkill for me and what I do, so I wouldn't bother paying more. As you can see in the game performance comparison graphs in this video, 2080 max-q is fine, but 2070 max-q still gives more than acceptable performance in modern games at max settings, so personal preference. Even smaller difference between those CPUs.

Temperature is shown in this video but from memory very few machines allow thermals to run up to 100c, most cap at 90 or 95, so performance may be lower as this triggers thermal throttling however it's required if you want cooler, just depends what the preference is. so based on this review and your review of the Helios 300, the only real reason to go with a Legion Y740 would be to get the g-sync display. Trying to decide if that makes it worth the $500 difference, me thinks not. What would you recommend after using both of them?

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 года назад

      Also if you want Thunderbolt 3, Helios is missing that. If you only care about gaming performance and not the extra features, Helios is better value.

      @@JarrodsTech thanks for the quick reply! I think I am going to go with the Helios. I want something to be able to game on when I travel for business. I have a desktop at home so the better value is what I am looking for. I appreciate your work; you are definitely my go-to for laptops. Keep up the good work!

    Hey Jarrod!
    I'm purchasing a laptop today, I have two options (I messaged previously but I missed out on a sale):
    1. Lenovo Y740 i7 9th gen 17" RTX 2060 - 16gb ram
    2. Acer Helios 300 17" i7 9th gen, rtx 2070 max q, 32gb ram
    Which would you personally recommend for relatively the same price?

    Im curious on how well it does overtime. I used to own a gaming laptop from lenovo a few years back. But i've kinda been burnt by them and im very hesitant to pick anything up from them. (Both literally and figuratively)
    When i only just got it, ive had alot of issues. Ive had to RMA it around 7 times, taking the trip down to their support center and back was about 40 dollars..So yeah you can imagine how much of a toll it took after a while. And when it was trying to run video games..Ho boy that thing would cook. And i mean..COOK. Pretty damn close to 95 Degrees Celsius. Touching the keyboard was uncomfortably warm..and even hot..And i had this thing in an air-conditioned room with fans running on it.(Standing fans)
    It did not take long for it to start cracking and chipping in spots due to the constant heating and cooling because of how hot it runs. Especially when rendering videos.

      Yeah not really something I can answer unfortunately as I only had it to test with for a couple of weeks.

      I've used Lenovo too,
      built quality not so good,
      but for the price range, its a compromise I cannot run from.

    • @saltychocolate2843
      @saltychocolate2843 4 года назад

      @@RatchetRorschach Id say now its more comparable. Previously it was a bit pricey and i would even argue other brands had better stuff running for em. But then again.. I wasn't too... 'into looking for the best bang for buck' and was just basically picking whatever seemed best at the time. Oh boy i definitely regretted that after a while and now i prefer to look around thoroughly before making a purchase.. Like the recent sale on the Hero Strix 2. So far id say its the best bang for buck in my caliber. Hell id spend the extra bit just because it looks nicer.

    Hey Jarrod, I'm planning to buy a laptop for Trading and editing full HD videos. I was zeroing in on Y740 with i7 9750h+16gb RAM+1tbSSD+ GTX1660ti (USD1685) because of its aluminium body as I travel a lot. However, Y540 with i7 9750h + 32gb RAM+ GTX 1650 + 1tb SSD is available for USD 1342.
    Considering that I'm prepared to settle for a plastic chassis. is it a good move to go for the Y540? Its about 350 usd cheaper than Y740 and has 16gb RAM extra. The 60hz refresh rate is okay for me as I don't game much(Please advise if higher refresh rate helps while editing videos).
    Would it be better in performance (for editing and rendering videos) than Y740?
    Great reviews BTW!!

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 года назад

      Those specs are fine for 4K editing so 1080 FHD would be fine either way. Y740 is plastic too, 540 just has a rubber texture over it. 740 mostly just gets you RGB lighting, Thunderbolt 3, and G-Sync, most of which aren't too useful for editing. High refresh rate does not benefit video editing in my opinion, you would want to prioritize colout gamut/accuracy/brightness/contrast etc.

      @@JarrodsTech Just ordered my Legion Y540 i7+16gb+ gtx 1650+1tb SSD. Thanks for your input Jarrod!
      I asked the lenovo sales guy about the product sales and he said they've sold 70+ units of Y540 this month compared to only 2 units of Y740. People are going for RTX 2060 AND RTX 2070 with Y540 rather than the entry-level Y740 with 1660ti. I guess the higher price point is a big minus for the 740.
      Your work deserves a million+ subscribers... Hope you get there soon!!

      Actually it came out this year 😉 RTX laptop graphics came out 2019 😁 but yes there are 9th gen models, I can only work with what I'm given so not sure if this is a complaint or what, hardly much difference between the 8750H and 9750H in any case.
