This song and video perfectly captures the feeling of grief, depression, and even suicidal ideation. The feelings so bleak, the pain that roots you so strongly in the present where you can't even imagine tomorrow, yet the feelings are so strong that you'd rather be anywhere else but in your body right now. The invisible half-deadness of walking around with the weight of it all, feeling like no one can possibly see or understand, and you just want to be left alone. What's also expressed is that tomorrow is real and can be so powerful, and people can relate and understand if you let them in. Grief can be isolating, but it doesn't have to be. That is the borderline, the choice between hiding or wanting to give up and run away, or staying, facing it with courage (even when it's scary) and letting love in.
This video was filmed on Southwold pier, UK. Running the full length of the handrails all round the pier are brass plaques in memory of the loss of loved ones. My dad died suddenly in 2001 when the pier was being rebuilt. He loved Southwold. He never got to see it finished so we had one of these plaques fitted. "Nigel, your a part of it, love Jane, James and Emma" So this video for me is extremely close to my heart. The way the people walk through him got the tears flowing

This song makes me feel like flying. You can see everything from above or on the sides but nobody sees you. In the show that I am writing I am using rhythmic ribbons to create this sensation where everything has to fly and melt in the air and you have to think and realize.

I love this song and I like "Subtract". It feels more genuine and real than its previous works. You can tell that the guy has gone through some life changing experiences and it reflects in his music and writings. You can sense that he became a man. I also appreciated that he got to work with Aaron Dessner. Altough this makes him sounds a bit too similar to Folklore & Evermore records it's interesting to see the take of a male pop artist into this kind of music.
Another stunning addition to this album. I keep hearing them separately, but know you [Ed] recommended at least one listen straight through and in the order they are presented. Can't wait to do just that. Really enjoying each song I hear and the inside glimpse of the wrestle of life in the raw.
