More instructional videos need to be like this one. It was easy to follow. You speak calmly and clearly with a fatherly figure tone, and you didn't have a 6 minute intro telling us the story of how you got your thermostat. This is a prime example of a great " how to..." video. Thank you.
After two days trying to figure out how to install the Google nest using the 5 cables, I was distracted without any effort until I saw your video. Today, I try it for the third time and, I got it right, thanks to you and your acknowledged. I’ll give you 5stars. Thank you once again.
After 2 hours of trying and failing I was ready to throw this thing out the window until I found your video. Thank you so much. Maybe all I needed was to take a break because I kept repeating the same process over and over and yet when I followed your instructions everything went by the book. For this. I am eternally grateful.
As a new homeowner and fairly young guy learning that this had electrical components deterred me from installing this for a while. After watching your video I wad able to successfully install my nest safely. Thanks for the video
Man why isn’t this guy on feed?? The simplest explanation with the most emphasis on critical components of the installation in under 8 minutes. Thank you sir
I’ve been very pleased with mine so far. No problems with it and very easy to use. I don’t have any exact figures as far as efficiency, but I feel like it’s helping.
I just purchased a Google nest thermostat and was a little intimidated about the installation, but after viewing your clear instructions I feel confident going into the project. Thank
This was amazing!!!! I used this step by step to set up my thermostat. This tutorial was even better than the google nest explanation. Thank you so much
I bought the Nest Thermostat which ideally requires 5 wires but my old thermostat that was installed when the house was built in 2003 only has 4 wires and some of the wire colours are different than what the Nest Thermostat calls for, so this is how I connected it: My four wires coming out of the wall are Red, Green, Black and Blue. So, I connected the red wire to R, the green wire to G, the blue wire to Y and the black wire to W.
Thanks for the video, I have got this thermostat lying in my table for 2 months, but after watching your video I installed it and it is working really good
Very useful video. I have a question. My thermostat has the usual Y, G, and W termini. In addition, it has an R and an Rc with a jumper between. When I entered these in Google Home, it returned as incompatible. However, you video showed that one can ignore the jumper and treat R and Rc as if there is only one R. Which is correct and why? Thank you!
The Nest has a built-in internal jumper that takes the place of the physical jumper in your original thermostat, which was the same situation as was mine. So only one R connection is needed.
This video was a lifesaver. My Google Nest kept telling me it was incompatible with my setup, but when I watched your video, I had the exact same wires/connections as you. Thank you!!!
Do we need to connect Wire C with this since it runs on AA batteries. Somehow my wire C is not working even after connecting the other end to the board
Most users won’t need to have a C Wire for this thermostat to work. The unit requires very little power to operate and can normally get what it needs from the existing wiring. The AA batteries serve as a backup in the event of a power outage.
Was curious how it works didn’t need to install it. Thumb up your video just because there was no BS straight to the point and detailed. I wish all tutorial videos took notes from you.
Don’t forget to let them know the major issues with Nest thermostats! Especially the one that pulses in your Y signal and makes contactor chatter which ultimately leads to equipment damage! I throw out a few nests per week. Supply houses and manufacturers have made us aware of the problems associated with nests. We actually have a higher diagnostic fee for nests. Not to mention the amazing technical support! You love em or hate em! Hvac mechanic for 27 years by the way. But great video!
Thanks for the video. I was going to give up, but your video gave me confidence to install it myself. Your clear instructions really helped. Thank you!
If you have a Google account, that's all you need. The functions of the thermostat are controlled through the Google Home app. But you can also control the thermostat manually.
I SUPER DUPER BLESS YOU MR. cravens.... very clear vocal.. not sure if I need to connect the black jumper cable... which went from rh to rc... but did'nt come from the wires coming out of the wall. ?? anyhow.....great video..
Great video I hooked mine up today but I only have a 3 wire system it seems to work my question is can my wife and I both have this hooked up to our phones plus the faceplate isn't used correct
First of all .. thank you so much for the best and detailed explanation. I tried to do fit this . Just wanted to ask one query .. do we need to Put white wire in W OR In OB ?
Nest states that their thermostats have built-in circuitry that compensates for the missing jumper, with an internal jumper between Rh and Rc. This enables you to just put your red wire into the “R” connection. Mine has worked perfectly. Thanks for watching!
In most cases, the lack of a C-wire won't be a problem. The thermostat requires very little power to operate and can usually get all the power it needs from the existing wiring.
My old thermostat doesn't say anywhere whether its 110 or 120V, at least that I could find after looking at it thoroughly. Couldn't find it in the old instruction manual either. If it's not listed on the thermostat itself, do we just "assume" it's not a high voltage system? I'd prefer not to blow up my building, haha. My old one looks similar to the one in your video. FYI, my condo has a fairly standard forced air central air HVAC system, if that helps. PS...your video is a million times better and more helpful than the one big behemoth Google made about Nest, which basically says "take your old thermostat off, put Google Nest on, attach the wires, set it up in Google Home." 🙄 So good job and thanks!
I would assume you have a low voltage system, but it's like you said, it's never safe to assume anything when you can't find any definite labels or markings that spell it out. The best way to determine what you have is by using a multimeter/voltmeter to measure the voltage at the thermostat. And thank you very much for watching...I appreciate it!
@@HowSkills Thanks! Sorry for the delayed response, I "think" I found the answer. In the instruction manual of the old one, buried in one of the sections it says "This Hunter Thermostat will NOT control multi-stage heat pumps or 110/120 Volt systems." So based on that, it sounds like the old one is not a 110/120 V system? What do you think? Thanks again.
We moved into a new home that has Nest. How can I get rid of it and replace with a simple thermostat. Like the M-F and Weekend modes, with 4 times of the day setting. Can a Nest thermostat be plucked away from the wall, except the wires, so I can install the old style one that I’m so used to?
You can pull a Nest Thermostat straight off of its connection to its base underneath. Then you can remove the wires from the base and remove the base itself to get access to the wires.

First of all .. thank you so much for the best and detailed explanation. I tried to do fit this . Just wanted to ask one query .. do we need to
Put white wire in W OR In OB ?
Normally, the white wire always goes in W.
OB has to do with a Heat Pump and would usually have an orange or blue wire.
