I like the design, but they fell down on one key aesthetic. While it's true the Gen 4 comes in three colors (silver, rose gold, and black), it appears that the color is only along a thin edge around the unit. The "stem" (between the display and the base) is white (although it may be black if the black color is chosen based on another video I saw). So while the color looks good from the front, the white "stem" detracts from the appearance when viewed from the side.
Unfortunately as people need AC upgrades, they'll be more likely to get multi or completely variable speed compressor and fan systems which require communicating thermostats. Nest isn't compatible with those systems' capabilities other than being able to control off/on. My Trane system has a communicating handler, so I had to set dip switches on the handler system to do the fan ramp-up/ramp-down as opposed to just the full off/on speed that Nest will control. It doesn't have the capability to do fully variable compressor control, so if you need a system that does that, you're stuck with the Honeywell or brand-provided tstat that comes recommended by the manufacturer.
I installed a Nest Thermostat 3 in my dad’s house a few months ago, I’d definitely love to have this one over it. It looks so nice! I also love that it has Matter support man. 😄
I am happy they can detect potential HVAC issues. Unfortunately, my 3rd gen has destroyed the control board of my furnace twice. I wonder if that issue has been fixed in the fourth gen.
Great vid... now hoping Google NEST will bring this version out to Europe as well... When it does, Hope to have a nice vid on our channel... keep up the good work
Did you happen to check to see if the trim plate from your Gen 2 Nest is compatible with the Gen 4 Nest? (Might save painting for others that upgrade from Gen 2 to Gen 4.)
Is the display in this not as bright as the 3rd generation? Some people have complained about that. Do you notice that it was dimmer or a definite difference in the display brightness?
Definitely considering it. Are you gonna repaint the wall @qbking77? On my older Nest Thermostat, I had to do a little sanding to make it look good, because I didn't like the look of the mounting plate.
Title says 4th gen. Is it? I just installed a 4th gen according to what the QR code says and it doesnt look like yours. I am just looking for a base plate🤔
No. This is designed for US HVAC installations that use 24V. European heating systems use 230VAC. As a result you need the Heat Link to do the switching. In the EU versions you just need a 2 wire cable from the heatlink to the thermostat for 12VDC power and optional wired comms. An EU model will surely follow, including a Heat Link type box, Opentherm support and hot water control. They could theoretically maintain the same Thread communication (wired and wireless) to the Heat Link, allowing you to replace only the thermostat head, but knowing Google, they will probably push a "new and improved" Heat Link that does the same as the old one, being more expensive, more shiny and stealing your data...
Gonna be honest, I prefer the design of the original Nest thermostats. Something about the excessive rounding of edges just looks off to me. I'd rather a metal-edged cylindrical dial with a display built in over this weird floating, squished glass orb.
This looks very unappealing, like some kind of weird mushroom, for no practical reason other than "it just looks different". The previous gen 3 Nest looked more elegant. The UI's text also looks small on this new 4th gen version, with some UI elements combined in an unintuitive way. Thanks for saving me money, I'll keep on using 3rd gen Nest thermostats for as long as they'll work and if they'll stop working - I'll probably just go with some non-Google thermostat instead.
"It's really hot" Really hot: 88 degrees. Only two digits? You've lost all credibility with me. 88 Is a cold front around here. I can't take thermostat advice from a crazy person.
So sad that Thermostats dont just have an on/off button anymore, they need screens and wifi bullshit for some reason. Techbros need something to gab about.
If I have to be honest, I don't see the point of such devices. If I can control everything from my phone, then why would I need this device? Otherwise, yes, it looks great, but it would just be another gadget.
I’ve pretty basic ecobee 3s in my house and I pretty much never set the temperature from the device itself, so it isn’t really important how the onscreen controls work. So the main job of these things are to display data and look good. The Nest being reviewed here is certainly pretty. If you keep changing your thermostat you are never going to break even on energy savings.
No need to replace your 2nd gen nest thermostat if it still works... This is clearly a paid video by Nest... Fancy stuff but useless... People use thermostat just to keep the space at the desired temp, that's it...
Thoughts on the design?? Would you want this in your house?
Honestly yes, idc how much it is👍🏻
I don’t see why I would want to upgrade from my older nest thermostat as it’s working great and does everything I need
I really like the design.
I like it, but we need the heatlink with this thermostat here in europe.. (the netherlands)

“Definitely a needed upgrade” that’s an odd thing to say. A lot of thermostats aren’t replaced for 20-30 years because they work absolutely fine
Agreed. My old gen 2 will be in my house until I die or move. It works... that's all I need it to do... it's a thermostat.
FACTS!!!!
It’s what the future will call a “wasteful upgrade”…
Then why are you here

It is so EASY to install US thermostats. Here in the UK - you need an extra box to connect to the boiler as well and the wiring is more complicated.
That's because the homes built here in the U.S. are cheap and built like sh*t!!!
Same in China - have boiler and different AC system. I use DropAir adapter to link them with my Nest.
Finally a review that shows how to replace the gen 2 with the gen 4 , Thank You!
I installed a Nest Thermostat 3 in my dad’s house a few months ago, I’d definitely love to have this one over it. It looks so nice! I also love that it has Matter support man. 😄
Always a good idea to take a picture of the current wiring before just removing everything.
I'm from EU and... seriously I want that !
"Make sure it's level before you tighten everything" Tights it completely crooked the next cut LOL
Great job Tim as always, cheers!
The click as you rotate sounds a bit like crickets in your the back yard, but that is a very nice pebble design.
Cool the New Pixel Watch for the wall
Great RUclips video and nice smart Thermostat😊
Looks like a giant Pixel Watch :D

How to charge it . Did it come with charger?
Did you happen to check to see if the trim plate from your Gen 2 Nest is compatible with the Gen 4 Nest? (Might save painting for others that upgrade from Gen 2 to Gen 4.)
It's not sadly
Is the display in this not as bright as the 3rd generation? Some people have complained about that. Do you notice that it was dimmer or a definite difference in the display brightness?
Can you paint the separate temp sensor? Inquiring minds would like to know ....
This design is quite attractive. The Google Nest Learning Thermostat is impeccably designed. I am really tempted to purchase this (US Only)
Google should let you customize the display on the last gen nest. It's not even that old.
now i hope that google will release new nest speaker and smart hub
Did it come with the backplate? Everywhere I look they only have 2nd and 3rd gen - but not the 4th gen. Please advise.
will it control a humidifier?
Your house is 88 degrees inside? I’d die.
If I don’t have a smart thermostat now can I install this myself?
the only issue I have with it is that for the setup you need to do with the phone. setting up on 3rd gen was way better
big brother right in your living room?' any thoughts on that?
Can it export your settings from the old one?
No
Is the thermostat able to prevent someone other than owner, from moving the temperature up or down. Or is the temperature adjusted by another person?
I have the old one and you can lock it. You will need to know the code to change temperature.
can I have your 3rd gen one that you no longer in use??? I'm in Chicago too can pick up from whatever location you would like, thank you!
What is the trim you used?
Lmao 88° is hot??? I’m in Texas 110° is what’s hot. 88° to us is just a nice cool breeze
can it handle a humidifier and an air exchanger?
it does it “hold” a temp! huge miss on the previous model
Honestly, that looks like my Pixel watch Gen 1 but bigger lol.
Definitely considering it.

Will this work with split AC?
But the real question: does anyone actually need this? What makes it better than a regular programmable thermostat?
Nothing. Maybe remote control, or outside weather forecast. But you always have a phone to see the weather.
Good idea EcoFlow delta pro ultra system 90,000 KWH power whole house ( Smart panel 2 I wish you 😀 test it out on RUclips video
Hi I have the third generation, do you know if I can use the third generation Heat Link?

So this is still not wireless?! Sad I would love to have one but I am not gonna put cables in my walls for that 😢
If you dont have cables behind your existing thermostat, they how is your furnace connected to it?
@@EtoTheKay through wifi with a receptor on the furnace. I have the honeywell round wireless

88 degrees? Really hot? 🤔😁
I thought the same thing, I’d literally die.

Apple Home support?

@@KGLIer23 pass.
You can connect it to Apple Home through Matter if you have a Homepod Mini or Apple TV.
Stick with Ecobee
88 ? 🤣 try 101 here in Houston
The way google abandons its product there is no way i will buy another. Last year they abandoned my $1500 security system. Screwgle

honestly I am done buying anything Google smart home. Definitely not made to last and are not priced correctly because of it.
You call this unboxing?
Ai scheduling...lol...

Jesus the exterior of the Pixel Fold 2 is so ugly compared to the other Foldables. What the heck was Google thinking lol.

shame that apple is not inovative as google or samsung
If I have to be honest, I don't see the point of such devices. If I can control everything from my phone, then why would I need this device? Otherwise, yes, it looks great, but it would just be another gadget.
Controlling it from your phone is a function of the device. Also, ecosystem.
@@XavierWoodsofIndianapolis It depends on the device. For example our air condition system has its own app and I don’t need nest to control it.
@@nikitrzoh wow that's handy. But pretty sure most units don't have their own app so this makes it smart and remote controlled
