    Dear Susanna, the places you cross are beautiful, but the most beautiful thing about your videos is always your willingness to face difficulties, be they rain or cows... It's nice to see how in this way you can enjoy small and simple, but precious things. And the final poem is deep and touching. thank you for everything!

      Aw Maurizio thank you for writing. Aw very mild and gentle difficulties, these on the road, just part of rolling along, so lucky, with time and freedom and health to do what I want. I am just grateful that I can do this at all. I saw a photo this morning actually, of me two years ago, and I was bald from chemo, and I was shocked to see myself like that with no hair! you forget dont you, in a way. Everyone has got things they are dealing with. And these little things, like riding in the rain, are not difficult at all really if you know what I mean. . Thank you for watching and for the lovely comment!

    Battled across Dartmoor (snow) and Bodmin moor (torrential rain) yesterday in my van to arrive in Truro where I’m working at the museum over the next couple of months. I just enjoyed your video drinking my morning coffee before work in the lodgings. So nice to see your lovely optimistic tour in mainly nice weather and light days. What a tonic for this dull old time of year where the land is totally scoured. i once tried painting in a field of cows… Big mistake! first they crowded round, blocking the view and then proceeded to lick all my kit. Not art lovers but certainly curious! Looking forward to your next tour. This one was great. X

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton  28 дней назад

      Haha oh no that sounds like a tricky painting with the cows. Makes me feel better, in a way, about thinking cows might lick me! the thing was that friends of mine have had a lot of trouble with cows licking their parked car, and as soon as I saw the cows in that field I was thinking about that. And they are probably very nimble things but I imagined them stumbling in the guy lines etc... Glad you made it safely across the west country, crikey that sounded scary and hard. But two months in Truro sounds brilliant, esp working at the museum. I just found you on Insta. OMG so lovely what you do, those waves... and I love the axe heads! and of all the old buildings and street scapes... Happy New Year! looking forward to see what you do next too!

    What a marvelous trip,Susanna😲 i live mostly in Århus,a bit in Ålborg and my only transport is bike and train. If there's another trip thru Jutland for you,you might take the old 'hær-vejen' directly translated to 'army-road'... it's for hikers and bikers,with tent/bivy/tarp only,it goes from northern Germany to northern Jutland. There are quite a few cafe's/restaurant's and shelter/camping spaces/places along the route and no(NO) cars, lots of nature and kind/friendly people aswell! And plenty of sightings (church-museum-nature).
    Happy cikling,'break a bone' 🤗🇩🇰🚴

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton  27 дней назад

      Thanks for writing Lars! The old 'hær-vejen' sounds great. I remember I saw an old bridge a year ago right in the south of Denmark which was part of that old road. It is very interesting how it goes all the way into Germany. I like the sound of those cafes too!

    As always I thoroughly enjoyed this journey along with you and I really want to go biking now!! Fantastic, to see Part3 of your epic journey, Susanna. Like so many have already said, the viewer becomes your companion through your trials, tribulations and joys. Thank you, so much. Where to next?

      Aw thank you for watching John, and for the lovely comment. Aw I don't know, it's nice of you to say so, but I don't think of these fun days out as an accomplishment, tbh! I feel more that it's a privilege - to have the time to do them, and the resources, and health, and freedom from caring responsibilities and all sorts of things like that. The older I get and the more I know, the more I realise it! if you want to do something and you can, then start now, do it now. And do it small, if small is what is feasible, dont wait for a big dream one day. Just start with what you have, and where you are... I think that's what I have the sense of... Oh, I'm getting all philosophical here! Happy New Year!

    I’ve just watched your video - what a joy. Somehow, while immersed in the story, I forget that not only have you spent time looking for wild camp sites and the perfect bakery cafe, but you’ve also been spending time setting up shots and filming your journey and narrative along the way. It must take quite a bit of time, especially when you’re on a schedule to catch a train.
    Anyway, thank you.
    I’ve learnt a lot about how you use your Brompton for bike touring, and keep your set-up simple, but with a few luxuries that work for you - and would work well for me I suspect (Im thinking decent tent, trusty Trangia, seat and flask).
    Im guessing you spend the summer (or a chunk of it) with your husband in Scandinavia, and the winter in London.
    I could really relate to your “shock” of the transition from deep cycle touring to being propelled back into city life quickly. It’s quite an adjustment!

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton  23 дня назад

      Hi Lou! thank you for the lovely comment! aw it's no big deal, cos I dont do any fancy shots that take a lot of time, eg no drone or anything. I just talk to the camera like it is a friend. Oh you put it brilliantly about a simple set-up plus a few luxuries - a fantastic tent, a Trangia with a decent set of pans so I can do proper cooking, a comfy seat, and a flask. And that is it, I am happy, more than happy. Thanks for writing!

    Moesgaard is a Museum with an absurd amount of iron-age weapons, from the famous "Illerup Find" in a Sacred Moor. An invading Army lost and paid the price and at least a part of their weapons naturally became sacrificed to the Holy Powers in the moor, for their help! We have many more Roman swords found in Denmark than in the rest of the Roman Empire at all, and far from all have been excavated, but are left to later times!! It is also the place to see one of the most famous and well-preserved Danish, Moor Bodies: "The Grauballe Man"! Finn. Denmark

    Happy New Year Susanna. It made my day to see that you have released another video and this one completing your journey home. I’m now looking forward to watching them all together. I’d have been worrying about those cows too, though I’m not sure I’d have been brave enough to be there in the first place. Thank you, as always, for taking the time to record your trip, allowing us all to join you on your adventure. Often when I am camping I find that darkness is really a friend, can relax, safely hidden. Two sides to everything. I watched all three films together myself last night, haha, nice! I love having the films to remember things I have done and go over it again. Wishing you happy new year! with lots of pancakes!

    Always a pleasure to be on a journey with you! Now I am thinking about buying a brompton thow I have a good touring bike. But travelling in train and bus is difficult with a normal bike and limits my options.

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton  4 дня назад +1

      Hello! oh that is exactly how I was.. I had always used big-wheel regular bikes for touring too, and always had the hassle of how to combine with public transport - trains sometimes doable, but often a hassle, needing to book etc etc. Buses out of the question. I discovered that a Brompton is a fantastic solution and opens up such a lot of nice options, to combine with train and bus etc. I love it.

    • @robingood62
      @robingood62 3 дня назад

      @susannathornton
      Now you convinced me to get me a Brompton. I will try to find a second-hand one. What do you think about the new 20" Bromptons with disc brake? Coud be a good solution with bigger wheels, but packing size is also larger. Woud you go for the bigger wheels if you woud buy a Brompton now?

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton  3 дня назад +1

      @@robingood62 it's tricky isnt it... yeah I have heard they are a nice ride. But the current Brompton a really nice ride already! If the 20 inch with mudguards had much better clearances than the standard, that would be kind of interesting cos that would open up the chance to ride on sticky muddy tracks more easily. Sticky mud quickly blocks the rear wheel of the standard Brompton with mudguards. But the pack size, yeh that is a big deal for me. It is critical for me that I can put bike into small spaces, eg in the boot of a little car, or under my feet like I did on the Deutsche Bahn train in this film.. so safe, and noone can complain about it. On another journey (coming soon!) I took a European sleeper train (film coming soon....!), which was the first time I tried that, and when I got on board with my folded Brompton and bags, I was worried that the folded bike wouldnt fit anywhere. I was in the cheap 6 bed couchette and it is quite cramped, not a lot of luggage space. But it went under the bottom bunk perfeclty. I could just slide it under. Hope you can try both maybe. Dad has recently bought a Decathlon 20 inch folder, and it is a lovely bike. We both like it. A very nice ride. But when folded, the bike is basically massive...

      @susannathornton
      Dear Susanna, thank you for your advice this helps me a lot! Pack size is key, so I go for a standard Brompton with 6 gears and rack.
      Wish me luck to find a good one.

    hi Susanna I enjoy watching your travels on your Brompton, keep making them. I have a C line six speed Brompton myself and have got it for two years but have only done about 300 plus miles on it. Today I checked wear on my chain as I just bought a chain wear tool and was surprised to see that my chain needs changed as the chain wear tool went strait through the.075 setting which probably means replacing the two rear sprockets and probably the front chain ring. as well. I would be interested to know how often you would change your chain and how many miles would you expect to get from your chain as you do long journeys . Look forward to hearing your reply. Many thanks in advance, Sammy

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton  4 дня назад +1

      Hi Samuel! thanks for watching! sounds nice that you have a Brompton. About chains, well, I change the chain on my Brompton only when it is really worn out and baggy, so that I can kind of lift it off the chainring, and when riding in the wet especially feel it grinding a bit on the chainring teeth... The thing is, A I am lazy! and B my 3-speed Brompton has a single steel chainring, which is cheap, a steel single rear sprocket, also cheap. I am not doing high performance riding, wanting silky smooth gear changes etc. On my Brompton, just touring, tootling around. So on my Brompton, I look after the chain - ie clean sand etc off, oil it regularly, eg always take oil with me on a tour - but I completely wear the chain and the whole drive train out. Then I just replace the whole lot - chain, chainring, and sprocket. It doesnt cost much to replace the whole lot. There is a theoretical risk that an old chain snaps, but it is highly unlikely - I have snapped one chain once in about 40 years, and that was on a derailleur road bike where the chain is moving a lot more, eg side to side, both front and back. On a fancy road bike, I did things differently, cos the drivetrain components - multi speed cassette, multi chainrings - even if not top of the range are much more expensive than my simple Brompton set up. A worn chain damages these expensive items, so I'd change the chain (which is relatively cheap) before it got worn and damaged the other components. Hope that helps??!! Best wishes!

      Hi Marcus, right let's go for it me too. Your Birdy sounds great. I just read the Cycling UK review, and comparison of Brompton and Birdy. I had not paid attention to Birdys before actually. Each bike is a different set of compromises isnt it, w its own pros and cons... and of course people are all different too, height and weight etc so there is no one right bike. Yeah I agree the small fold size of the little Brompton is a fantastic thing. When I put my bike under a train seat and it actually fits or in the back of someone's little car and it goes snugly in and you can close the boot without doing anything I think oh god I love this thing

      Hi Jim! aw thank you for the lovely comment. Glad you enjoy the films. About how I film, I sometimes film using my phone, which is a google pixel, but mainly use a Gopro Hero Black 9. When I started, I had a Gopro Hero 7. It had poor sound quality and poor stabilisation. The 9 is hugely better than the 7. I shoot in 1080p resolution. About sound, I use the sound from the Gopro. I use a windslayer spongy housing on the Gopro to keep the wind noise down. I dont have a separate microphone. It is quite tricky on the road keeping it all going and setting things up, and I dont want any more bits like extra microphone to faff with unless they seem to me really worth it. I am a kind of make do person. And at the limit managing the set up I have got! Hope that helps! thank you for watching! Best wishes!

    Just looked it up, there are 9 bakeries in Horsens. 🙂 You should have asked someone. Maybe us Danes are weird, but we will always help. We are taught that from childhood. We must help each other, nobody can do everything.
    I am glad you took the eastern route down through Jylland. The western one is rougher and way more windy, a completely different landscape, like being in another country.

      Hi Gert! Happy New Year to you too! Aw yeh I got myself in a tizzy in Horsens, unnecessarily! I went round and round in circles in the city cetnre looking for a bakery on a street I could see on google maps, but I couldnt find it, realised later the bakery must have been inside a covered shopping mall type place actually, and that was why I couldnt find it. Silly, yeh I should have asked. I was hungry and spent ages trying to find just that one cafe. Then just felt kind of frustrated with myself. Everyone I met was kind and helpful. I didn't include everyone I met in the film for various reasons. eg I met a really lovely woman one evening, also camping, close to her home for one night, having a break from her family, getting some fresh air and space. It is a lovely thing you guys do, maintaining, and using the primitive camping network. The woman I met didn't consider what she was doing to be unusual. How lovely is that. By the way, is Steen Steensen Blicher a writer people read these days in Denmark? I saw that his stories etc are in school books. I thought it was surprising that his work hasnt been much translated into English, or into Swedish either. I haven't tried reading the short novels. I think his Birds of Passage poems are lovely. Anyway, thank you for writing! Wishing you a very good year in 2025!

    • @Gert-DK
      @Gert-DK Месяц назад

      @@susannathornton I don't think Steen Steensen Blicher is much read nowadays. I have never read him. When I went to school (60s and 70s) we didn't cover him. I have heard he's name, maybe from my grandma, she came from that area, and she read all sorts of writers. I might also heard about him in other ways.
      Have you read Karen Blixen? Her life, or at least part of her life, was portrayed in a film, with Meryl Streep as Karen. Movie is called Out of Africa.

And it does not feel comfortable for longer distances with these handlebares . On your green, old brompton you had butterfly handlebars. Now you don't. Is there any reason for it? Maybe these handlebars could be an option for me so my body comes a little bit higher and straighter? My handlebar is the M size. Lots of greetings from the south of Germany

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton  28 дней назад

      Hi Katja! thanks for writing! Hope you can get out and enjoy riding your bike this year! If you are worried about your brakes, I suggest you take the bike to a bike shop, and ask them to give the bike a check. If the brakes are set up properly, there's no need to be scared. Ask the mechanics to tell you which is the front brake and which is the back brake. Use the back brake more when you're cycling. Practise going down a few hills. Take it at your own pace. You dont need to go fast if you dont want to. Then you'll feel more confident, and off you go... exploring the world!
