    Your Dad is a role model still on his bike at 88. That’s tremendous, well done both of you for another Epic adventure together. It’s always nice to cycle with somebody else, but cycling with family is super special. 😀

      I guess everything is all on just such a different scale in the US... yeh in the UK the bus network etc is far from fantastic really but good to see that where they are investing in making the buses better, people do seem to be using them - I found out later that that bus service we took had recently been increased to one bus every half hour using central government funding. And it was great to see it pretty busy. So that for some people for some journeys they can leave the car at home, and people who dont have a car can get about. Anyway! interesting. Hey Susanna - Nice to see you out with your Dad again. He’s an inspiration. I don’t know whether it’s just your editing, or luck, or what but you always seem to travel along pretty quiet, traffic free roads! Here in rural Devon there always seems to be a car behind you wanting to get past and the road surfaces are shot. Gravel, pot holes, debris etc. I’m embarrassed to say that I’m loving the electric bike! Love those Angel churches too. They are massive for relatively out of the way churches. The variety of church architecture across Britain is fascinating. It’s great that your videos include the destinations and enjoyment of the countryside. Take care. V X

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton  3 месяца назад +1

      Hi Vin! thanks for writing! yeah about the roads, it was mostly really nice and quiet and we really appreciated that - it is so nice often to be able to ride side by side and chat. And we found that on this trip a lot of the car drivers we encountered were very decent, waiting if necessary till they it was safe for them to overtake and giving us a lot of space. So, yeh of course we appreciated that. I always wonder if drivers see in their rear view mirrors that we do give a wave to say thanks. I imagine they dont really, cos they will be looking ahead wont they, but anway. About angel roofs, I found a map of them that was just extraoridary, masses of them in E Anglia and a few drifting out into Lincolnshire etc. Then hardly any. People have wondered why and one theory is that it's the big skies full of birds in the eastern counties that somehow that led to roofs full of angels. Anyway! hope you are having a nice weekend! thanks for writing!

    • @jellyartist
      @jellyartist 3 месяца назад

      @@susannathornton Apparently there is an angel roofed church in Taunton. It isn’t quite as spectacular at those in East Anglia seem to be although it looks as if it’s been painted in the not too distant past which make it look a lot more ‘fancy’ in the photos. Structurally simpler though and interesting as it’s a long way from the east. I feel sure I’ve seen another in Devon somewhere but I can’t remember where or maybe I’ve imagined it. V

    • @susannathornton
      @susannathornton  3 месяца назад +1

      @@jellyartist ah interesting that it looks different. Apparently there is a little cluster there in Devon and Somerset. I read a book about medieval East Anglian angel roofs, by a guy called Rimmer or something - who took super photos of them actually - and he did mention an apparently unrelated cluster of angels in the rafters in Devon Somerset. Interesting that the ones you've seen are a different style. I wish I could have taken better photos. I love looking at the details but it's all very high up!

      Hello! thanks for writing! yeh it is a pity isnt it that Google Maps doesnt show the trains more clearly, and pity that when you click "public transport" layer you don't see the bus lines. GM do have the bus info, cos it is used in the GM public transport "Directions" thing so I dont understand why they dont show the bus routes. They show the underground lines in London really nicely in the "public transport" layer, so you can see where the lines actually go. I wonder why they dont show "interurban" buses like that.

      Aw me too, I miss the Peak District hills too. Feel lucky to have grown up with all that on the doorstep... But Norwich, yeah we really liked it, great place, lovely countryside roundabout, and the coast too so close actually, though we didnt see that this time

    Enjoyed that and your other videos. You are inspiring enough but your Dad at 88 👏👏 I did a day ride on my Brompton recently where I did about 40 miles with a train journey and a ferry crossing as well. It struck me afterwards that as I get even older I could do the same journey but just increase the ratio of public transport. Fantastic machines and mine has a Kinetics conversion too which makes it even better but still good for public transport. Buses are free for oldies in Scotland too, so even better. Keep doing your videos 🙏👏

    Susanna, I love your videos and the way you showcase your trips and the places you visit - truly wonderful to embrace & appreciate the simple but beautiful things in life. Your Dad is amazing too!
    On another note - I'm a Kiwi & looking at doing some bike touring (on a Brompton) in Europe next year.
    I have the classic Ortlieb bags & would love to be able to use them. If at all possible, I would love to buy a steel rack like your husband made for your front Ortlieb pannier. Is that something he (or you) could consider?
    Many thanks, Lynn

      Hi Lynn! glad you enjoy the films! oh that is great that you are planning to tour on your Brompton. About the frame for using an Ortlieb on the front of a Brompton, I'm afraid my husband doesnt make these commercially, but happy for people to copy his design - there is an image of the frame with notes on dimensions etc here, so that you could ask someone local to you to make one ruclips.net/video/ar8D-TVgdxg/видео.htmlsi=uZpNWePnHtE3ql2k&t=227

    As always - loved your film. Such a lovely relationship with your dad and it is so easy to see how much you both enjoy the adventure.
    I am so sorry to hear that your dad is also dealing with cancer but can see that you are a great encouragement to each other and the shared joy of cycling is a wonderful distraction and boost to you both.
    Wishing you both the best of health and hoping that things improve despite it being cancer. Thank you for sharing your adventure - it is a real spirit lifter for those who share the journey vicariously too.
